north bay. we'll tell you why. when abc7 news staff building a better bay area moving forward, finding solutions. >> this is abc seven news tonight. >> a search for answers and a part of a plane that blew off mid-air during a flight heading to california. good evening, and thanks for joining us. i'm diane lyn, two developing news tonight on the incident involving an alaska airlines jet. bay area airports are seeing delays in cancellations after the faa grounded boeing 737 max nine planes. the model involved in friday's emergency. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is at sfo with details. and cornell, you are hearing from passengers. they are frustrated. yes definitely. >> some frustrated travelers tonight. deon, as those cancellations continue to mount, i have to say it's been a very busy day here at sfo and the grounding of those boeing planes

adding to a lot of confusion. >> it's very, very, very frustrating. >> patience obioha from dallas was feeling no patience at sfo sunday after alaska airlines canceled. she and her husband's 1:30 p.m. flight home. the faa grounding the airline's fleet of boeing 737 max nine planes. following this scary incident on board an alaska flight friday night. >> i'm hearing this for the first time. i didn't know that they have a problem. on friday, i got a call that the flight is canceled. >> i said, i've already checked out of the hotel. what are they going to do? >> stunning video on board the boeing 737 max nine plane shows a gaping hole in the side. friday's flight initially headed for ontario, returned to the portland, oregon international airport for an emergency landing ten minutes after takeoff. there were no serious injuries, but the loss of the mid cabin door plug is raising questions and concerns. we are very, very fortunate here that this didn't

end up in something more tragic. >> no one was seated in 26 a and b where that door plug is. the faa saying its first priority is keeping the flying public safe. >> we have grounded the effect of airplanes, and they will remain grounded until the faa is satisfied that they are safe. we saw several alaska airlines, 737 max nines parked on this sfo tarmac away from terminals. a ground crew was looking at the planes. the grounding canceling dozens of alaska and united airlines flights sunday on a busy day when sfo is seeing lots of post holiday travelers come and go, i received a text at 2 a.m. that the flight had been canceled, and they were good enough to book me on a different flight. >> about four hours later, the alaska airlines posting on x. >> we are deeply sorry for the disruption. the 737 nine max grounding has caused our guests. we expect the disruption to last through at least midweek for patients in cleatus. it's not the way they wanted their bay

area vacation to end. >> it's going to be their responsibility to arrange for transfer to another airline >> now we are told the airline was able to get cletus and his wife, patience, on another flight out to dallas tonight. airline should notify you if your flight is canceled, but it's always a good idea to check your flight status before heading out here to the airport. and we're live at sfo tonight. cornell bernard abc seven news. >> certainly better to be safe than sorry. all right, cornell, thank you. right now, some background on boeing's max jetliners there are four variants about 215 of the airplanes are in service globally. that is according to the new york times. united airlines flies 79, the most of any airline, and alaska has 65. they are the only two us carriers flying that plane in 2018 and 19. the crashes of two 737 eight max jets in less than six months killed all 346 people

and led to a grounding of the planes. the faa announced in november of 2020 that it had cleared the 737 max to fly again after boeing made changes to an automated flight control system implicated in the crashes. new developments now out of washington house and senate leaders have announced a spending deal for government funding in 2024. it is the first step to averting a partial shutdown that was set to begin later this month. the deal would set spending at $1.59 trillion for the fiscal year, more than $880 billion will go toward defense spending, and 704 will be for non-defense spending. there's also a $69 billion side deal that could go toward additional domestic spending. that agreement reduces the chances of a shutdown, but congress will still have to approve stopgap funding bills before it is finalized and voted on. well, taking a live look now outside where we are in for yet

another cold night following a frost warning that expired this morning. and as temperatures dip, some winds nursery in novato recommends residents take steps to protect sensitive plants. and among the things you can do, they suggest using frost claws or wilt stop spray on products. so will we see temperatures plunging into the 30s again in some areas? let's get to spencer with more on the answer. >> hey there dion. hey, i'm afraid they'll be plunging again tonight and into the early morning hours. here's a look at the next frost advisory in effect from midnight tonight till 10 a.m. tomorrow. for virtually all of the bay area except the coastline and the immediate bay shoreline. so that includes the north bay, the inland east bay, santa clara valley, the santa cruz mountains . generally, low temperatures will be around 32 degrees, dropping as low as 30 again generally, but some spots will see temperatures dropping into the upper 20s, so it's going to be quite cold. and again, that expires at 10:00 tomorrow morning. so we're looking now at

our projected overnight low temperatures. as you can see, most inland areas will be in the 32 to 35 degree range right around the bay shoreline, more upper 30s to about 40 degrees. the good news is that tomorrow will be a mainly sunny day until late in the afternoon, when clouds start to approach. but it won't be very mild today. high temperatures tomorrow, rather high temperatures only in the low to mid 50s. i'll have more on the seven days ahead a little bit later. dion >> all right spencer, thanks. a deadly shooting happened last night near san francisco's chase center. witnesses say it happened somewhere between the mission rock resort and the arena. officers responded to calls of that shooting at about ten last night and found that victim nearby. witnesses told officers there may have been a vehicle involved in the shooting . developing news workers are close to finishing a barrier of double stacked shipping containers around berkeley's people's park. the task was supposed to be completed last night, but was delayed due to rain. there are still road closures in the area as the work

continues. you see plans to build student housing on the land, but protesters want the historic space preserved. once given, the go ahead construction is expected to last two and a half years and cost just over $300 million. >> so this project will preserve about two thirds of the site as public park space. and on the other third, we're going to be building two buildings, one of permanent supportive housing with 100 apartments for extremely low income persons and recently unhoused persons. and in the other building, 100 units of student housing. >> construction at the site cannot begin until a lawsuit over the park's future is settled by the state supreme court. a cease fire resolution for the israel-hamas war could go before san francisco supervisors this tuesday. a committee hearing on the measure is scheduled for tomorrow. that resolution calls for a sustained cease fire, humanitarian aid, the release of all hostages and the condemnation of anti-semitism, islamophobia and anti palestinian hate. if approved, san francisco would

worked aboard the international space station and last year became the very first native american woman in space before becoming an astronaut, mann served in iraq and afghanistan as a combat fighter pilot. happening tomorrow a new milestone mission to the moon as the first private company in america is set to launch a lander to the moon's surface, abc news reporter gio benitez has a look. >> 50 years after we landed on the moon, a whole apollo program is really the true beginning of what's to come in the future. another potential giant leap for humankind as nasa funds advanced missions back to the moon by commercial operators, the peregrine lunar lander, built by astrobotic, is set to launch on the maiden flight of ula's vulcan rocket from the kennedy space center. but landing on the moon is tricky. they ask us as a company, to buy a launch vehicle and to build a lander that can deliver their payloads, in this case, science payloads to the

surface of the moon 2024 is shaping up to be the year of the lunar lander, with five us spacecraft and at least one japanese lander heading to the south pole of the moon. it is a quarter million miles away. >> it is in the vacuum of space. um, you are controlling a vehicle that you can't use a joystick with from here on earth. >> these missions are critical. before nasa can land artemis three on the lunar south pole, operating under harsh conditions , peregrine won't make it to the moon until february and has friendly competition from another company, intuitive machines, which is launching after peregrine but hopes to land just one day earlier on the moon. >> that was gio benitez reporting now, nasa says the sweet payloads aboard peregrine one will aim to locate water molecules on the moon, measure radiation gases around the lander and evaluate the thin layer of gases on the moon's surface. well, looking ahead, it is a slow go to the snow in

here is video today from palisades tahoe. what a sight. there yeah. the resort says it received 71in of fresh powder over just the last 24 hours. it's attracting skiers and boarders to the mountain, but many say it has been a challenging drive. >> variants coming up here where there was a lot of snow. we've seen maybe 3 or 4 accidents as well. we were trying to make it to tahoe donner, but we underestimate how long it was

going to take. there in the snowy conditions. >> the berkeley snow lab recorded 30% of the average snowpack before the start of the weekend. that is compared to 185% from the year before. and i remember we made such a dent in our drought, and it seemed like we were on good track. >> yeah, well, we're in a pretty good track right now that we've got a series of storms coming in and producing snow. we're not going to hit last year's levels, nowhere near it. that's not going to happen, but we'll be around normal. i think if this pattern keeps up, here's a look at what's happening here in the bay area right now on live doppler seven quiet conditions, clear skies, no precipitation in sight over the next 24 hours. but there's a storm brewing out to sea that's moving in our direction. and by tuesday, it could be producing some rainfall here. right now, though, it's calm wind speeds at the surface, generally under ten miles per hour. the 24 hour temperature change shows that the chill is on many locations right now are about 2 to 4 degrees cooler than they were at this time last night. so on we go to look out

over san francisco, where it's 52 degrees 49 right now in oakland, san jose 48 and low 50 right now at hayward, san mateo and half moon bay at and looking toward the bay bridge from emeryville. of the temperature readings right now 49 at santa rosa, we have mid 40s at petaluma and napa and fairfield, 50 at concord and 45 at livermore. these are our forecast headlines. it's going to be another frosty morning tomorrow. frost advisory in effect uh- overnight into the early morning hours. now tuesday our next storm will arrive. it'll bring some pretty steady rainfall. and that rain may linger into wednesday with lightrillionain and showers. so we've got some wet, unsettled weather coming our way. meanwhile, let's talk about that frost advisory in effect from midnight tonight to 10 a.m. tomorrow. for virtually all of the bay area except the immediate bay shoreline and the coast, temperatures could drop as low as 30 degrees, likely to drop below 30 in some spots. frost by the way, could kill tender plants, so bear that in mind. so specific lows tonight 32 degrees at santa rosa and

fairfield and livermore. up at lakeport, a low of 31 expected. and again, many locations far inland could drop below 30 degrees right around the bay shoreline. we'll be looking at lows in the mid to upper 30s to about 40 degrees. highs tomorrow under mainly sunny skies but with increasing clouds late in the day, generally in the mid 50s. now let's look ahead at the forecast animation starting at 11:00 tomorrow night by tuesday we'll have our next rain maker sweeping into the bay area and then that will continue into wednesday with a little bit of a break on thursday, maybe sunny skies then, but on friday another system develops late in the day continues into saturday. it may produce rain even into sunday. so here's a look at the wet, unsettled week ahead again, mainly sunny skies tomorrow after the morning frost level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale for tuesday and wednesday, giving way to a mostly sunny day on thursday. a chance of some late day or evening showers, and friday leading to our next level one storm on saturday, which may
