mid-air incident is only getting started as is the renewed scrutiny for boeing, which has been working to get its max 737 back on track. that damaged plane sits out of commission indefinitely at portland international airport tonight. you can see there that hole where the blown out door was and is now covered by a big piece of the investigation, has also been solved. the missing door plug that blew off the plane mid-flight has been found. a portland schoolteacher reached out to investigators after he found the missing fuselage door plug in his yard. that is, according to the ntsb, there were no serious injuries on board the flight, likely because the seats closest to the door plug were empty. also ntsb chair jennifer homendy says that alaska airlines plane has had a very recent history of mechanical issues. she discussed the investigation tonight with abc news reporter gio benitez. >> a pressurization alert uh- li

lit up in the cockpit on december 7th. on january third, on january 4th. and it was described as pretty benign. there's a backup. so they switched to all alternate pressurization and reported it maintenance tested it, put it back in service. >> does that concern you at all? >> everything concerns us, right now. bay area airports are seeing delays and cancellations related to the faa grounding. >> the 737 max nine abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with frustrated passengers at sfo today. >> it's very, very, very frustrating. >> patients are from dallas, was feeling no patience at sfo sunday after alaska airlines canceled. she and her husband's 1:30 p.m. flight home. the faa grounding the airline's fleet of boeing 737 max nine planes following this scary incident on

board an alaska flight friday night. i'm hearing this for the first time. >> i didn't know that they have a problem. on friday, i got a call that the flight is canceled . >> i said, i've already checked out of the hotel. what are they going to do? >> stunning video on board the boeing 737 max nine plane shows a gaping hole in the side. friday's flight, initially headed for ontario, returned to the portland, oregon international airport for an emergency landing ten minutes after takeoff. there were no serious injuries, but the loss of the mid cabin door plug is raising questions and concerns. >> we are very, very fortunate here that this didn't end up in something more tragic. no one was seated in 26 a and b where that door plug is. >> the faa saying its first priority is keeping the flying public safe. we have grounded the effect of airplanes, and they will remain grounded until the faa is satisfied that they

are safe. we saw several alaska airlines, 737 max nines parked on this sfo tarmac away from terminals. a ground crew was looking at the planes. the grounding canceling dozens of alaska and united airlines flights sunday on a busy day when sfo is seeing lots of post holiday travelers come and go, i received a text at 2 a.m. that the flight had been canceled, and they were good enough to book me on a different flight. >> about four hours later, alaska airlines posting on x. >> we are deeply sorry for the disruption. the 737 nine max grounding has caused our guests. we expect the disruption to last through at least midweek for patients in cleatus. it's not the way they wanted their bay area vacation to end. >> it's going to be their responsibility to arrange for transfer to another airline. for now, bernard, abc seven news. >> we're also learning one man in the portland area seems to have found someone's iphone. >> from the flight on the ground below. this has all been

confirmed by the ntsb. the man found it off barnes road in portland. the phone was still in airplane mode at the time and had baggage information on the screen for the person who owns the phone of course, that reunion process is underway today. now, here is some of the background on these boeing max jetliners. there are four variations. owns about 215 of those planes are in service globally. that's according to the new york times. united flies 79, the most of any airline. alaska has 65. they are the only two us carriers in 2018 and 19. two crashes of 737 max eight jets in less than six months killed all 346 passengers and led to a grounding of those planes. the faa cleared the 737 max to fly once again in november 2020. after boeing made changes to an automated flight control system implicated in the crashes. and we have been updating you with the very

latest on this all weekend with alerts just like the one you see here sent straight to your phone for customized breaking news and weather alerts, you can always download the abc seven news bay area app, and be sure to turn on those notifications. all right, moving on. let's turn it over to our weather as we take a live look outside. this is our exploratorium camera tonight where things look quite peaceful . all lit up the bridge. there get ready, though, for yet another cold and frosty night. it will be chilly. spencer joins us now with a look at how low it will go. >> spencer okay, dion, it certainly will be chilly. let's start with a look at that frost advisory, which will be in effect for virtually all of the bay area until 10:00 tomorrow morning. everything except the coastline, the bay shoreline and the coast and temperatures may drop down to as low as 30 degrees during this period of time. so let's take a look at your day planner. starting at 7 a.m, we'll have mostly clear skies, a few clouds. it will be cold and frosty temperatures in the mid 30s inland, upper 30s around the bay, low 40s on the

coast. midday from noon into 4 p.m. we'll see. mainly sunny skies, a few clouds mixing in late in the afternoon, temperatures ranging from low to mid 50s from the inland areas to the coast. then at 7 p.m, of course, the sun will have set. it will be partly cloudy in fact, it will be increasingly cloudy. 46 degrees inland and about 50 near the coast and bay. as rain moves into the picture, which i will give you more details on a little bit later. dion all right, sounds good. >> spencer thank you. developing news now in the battle over berkeley's people's park. workers say they'll be finished putting up a barrier of shipping containers around the park by tomorrow afternoon, but it has not gone without issue to surrounding neighbors. uc leaders are trying to build student housing on the land, but protesters want the historic space preserved. tonight. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has more on the fight over the future of this important park. >> one shipping container at a time. crews working to complete a barrier around berkeley's

people's park sunday. the historic site once the center of the antiwar and counter culture movement of the 60s and 70s, this project will preserve about two thirds of the site as public park space. >> and on the other third, we're going to be building two buildings, one of permanent supportive housing with 100 apartments for extremely low income persons and recently unhoused persons. and in the other building, 100 units of student housing crews began clearing the park. >> this past week, dismantling what was left of a homeless encampment as police faced off with dozens of protesters making seven arrests. >> you know, i think that, of course, housing is needed. and i also know and i've seen reports that uc berkeley has identified other places to build this housing. >> and while some say the park should be preserved, others are in favor of the project. >> i represent a part of berkeley that's been here a long time. people's park is not usable. i mean, i used to i used to work on telegraph avenue, and i was here in the early 70s.

>> the university says it's been working with the people who've been living in the park to make sure they get the supports they need. >> our social worker, who we employ full time to work here at people's park, took a survey of all the unhoused people. there were about 25 people living in the park. we partnered with the city of berkeley to do a transitional housing program with the following, which is being operated by dorothy day house. >> and they say 21 of those 25 people agreed to go into the program. >> most everybody has has done the kind of county housing assessments are on a path towards housing, almost everybody has gotten connected to benefits. >> as for when construction will begin at the site, the university has to wait until the state supreme court settles a lawsuit over the park's future. tara campbell, abc seven news this week, we could see san francisco leaders vote on a cease fire resolution for the israel-hamas war. >> a committee hearing on the measure is scheduled for tomorrow. that resolution calls for a sustained cease fire. humanity an aid, the release of

all hostages and the condemnation of anti-semitism, islamophobia and anti-palestinian hate. if approved, san francisco would join oakland and richmond in publicly condemning the war in the middle east. now to the impending and highly anticipated return of warrior star draymond green. he is now allowed to be back with the team after serving a 12 game suspension for hitting another player during a game last month. his on court issues over the years have been well documented, although he didn't play in tonight's game against toronto warriors, fans are excited to see him get back in uniform. >> i actually i thought the suspension was was deserved. he crossed the line, but you know what? he he paid the price and now he's back and hopefully he'll learn from it. >> he's done the work to return to be, you know, a better player, to be a better teammate. uh, yeah. let them come back. let them play. let's let's get this championship. we need number five. >> green has been undergoing

released any information on possible suspects in any of the cases. actor jonathan majors is speaking out for the first time since being convicted of misdemeanor reckless assault. majors is known for multiple box office hits. he was one of marvel's leading men, starring as kang the conqueror in the latest ant-man and the wasp. but last march, you may remember his girlfriend at the time, grace jabari, accused majors of attacking her. in december, he was convicted of reckless assault and harassment at abc news anchor linsey davis spoke with majors in an exclusive interview ahead of his sentencing next month. she went to grab the phone. >> i held the phone. i pulled the phone back, she came on top of me, squeezed my face, slapped me. um, at that. that's that's that's all i remember. >> so she ends up with a one inch cut behind her ear laceration. yes, ma'am. fractured finger? yeah how did those injuries come about.

>> marvel. which is owned by our parent company, disney, dropped majors in the light of the incident. you can catch more of the interview tomorrow on good morning america right here on abc seven, starting at 7 a.m. well, new developments out of washington house and senate leaders have announced a spending deal for government funding in 2024. it is the first step to averting a partial shutdown that was set to begin later this month. that deal would set spending at $1.59 trillion for this fiscal year. more than $880 billion will go toward defense spending. $704 billion will be for non-defense spending. there's also a $69 billion side deal that could go toward additional domestic spending. the agreement reduces the chances of a shutdown, but congress will still have to approve stopgap funding bills before it's finalized and voted on. all right. happening right now, a new mission to the moon is set to blast off, taking a live look now at cape canaveral,

florida, where the rocket is attempting its first ever liftoff carrying peregrine. the first lunar lander to launch from the united states since nasa's final apollo mission in 1972. the lunar lander would be the first commercially developed spacecraft to make a soft landing on the moon. now, nasa has sponsored the development of a small fleet of privately developed lunar landers, aiming to use them to give the u.s. a renewed presence on the moon. the rocket will carry the ashes. listen to this, and dna from 70 people, including star trek creator gene roddenberry and several late cast members of the show. peregrine is due to land on the moon on february 23rd, once again, let's take a live look from cape canaveral, where you can see the weather conditions out there do appear to be clear. it is pitch black out there and the countdown is on. 20s to go. the ultimate goal is a robotic mission to the moon. before trying to return

astronauts to the lunar surface later this decade. so far, only india and china have made soft landings on the moon this century, as we once again continue to look live. there it goes. wow. could it be on time? yes indeed. you can see those plumes of smoke, that bright light. and really from this vantage point for all of these missions, you can always see that the camera is very far away. the ground undoubtedly is shaking, and people in the area always report being able to feel it. and see it miles away. and it is truly a spectacular sight. as you see. finally, in cape canaveral, florida, that new lunar lander headed to the moon. how spectacular is that? >> it's amazing that there's dna on board from gene roddenberry and members of the club. the star trek cast. yes >> amazing. i always feel like the people who are behind this, they work so hard. they are undoubtedly incredibly intelligent individuals, but

ones that have also a bit of humor as well, and a bit of a weirdness. >> because who thinks of this stuff, right? >> indeed. and i think it's nice, though, that finally the weather is good because so often times with these lunar liftoff s, we see the weather delays things. >> yeah, sometimes delays and cancels and yeah, this is great. we got to see it. no no hitches. so no glitches or hitches. >> yeah. so far. >> so let's take a look at our weather shall we. we have a storm system building out to see this moving in our direction. but right now we have calm conditions looking out over san francisco. it's like 48 degrees right now. most other locations are in the mid to upper 40s as well. oakland hayward center, san jose, san mateo, and other temperature readings. right now 42 at santa rosa. but every other location in the north bay and over in the inland east bay in the 30s already. so it's getting cold ahead of the frost advisory, which will be in effect overnight and in the early morning hours tuesday, our next storm arrives, and

wednesday, some lingering light showers and rainfall. so on we go to the frost advisory, which is the big weather news for tonight that will be in effect from midnight tonight to 10 a.m. tomorrow for virtually all of the bay area away from the coastline and the bay shoreline, temperatures may drop as low as 20 degrees. here's a look at our projected lows for the night 32 degrees freezing at santa rosa at fairfield. down at livermore, most inland areas will see low temperatures dropping into the low to mid 30s overnight. right around the bay shoreline, mainly upper 30s to about 40. highs tomorrow under mainly sunny skies, but with some filtered sunshine because high clouds will develop. high temperatures will be mainly in the mid 50s and as we look at the future cast, you can see a series of systems coming our way through next week. so we have maybe one sunny day coming in the middle of all this. this rain that's coming at us. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast after tomorrow's dry conditions, a level one storm on tuesday and wednesday. then there's that sunny day in the middle of all. all of this on thursday. and then on friday, a chance of

states marine corps. >> i grew up here in northern california, and we're attending the 40 niners game today. our front line hero of the game, colonel nicole mann. so i was born in petaluma, california, just north of the city, and went to school at rancho cotati high school in rohnert park, uh- after there, i went to annapolis. the united states naval academy in maryland, and i knew i wanted to serve in the military, and i was interested in engineering and so that was a great school for both of those. after that, i went to grad school back here in california at stanford university, and then off to flight school in the marine corps. i got my wings and learned to fly the f-18, which is a hornet, and did two combat deployments off the aircraft carrier uss enterprise in iraq and afghanistan. >> what's more exciting, your first landing on a carrier or blast off on space-x? oh let's see. >> first, landing on a carrier or launching on space from the planet. both were so exciting.

both were beginnings of new chapters in my life. and i was the commander of crew five. and that's a space spacecraft. it's incredible to be in space. mom look, i'm finally in space. we launched from kennedy space center in florida to the international space station, where my crew and i spent 157 days in orbit around our planet, where we conducted over 250 scientific experiments, seven spacewalks outside the door, a ton of outreach events and upgrades to the space station. it was an incredible experience and an incredible view of our planet from outer space. >> and as you just saw, splashdown of crew five. >> so i was fortunate enough to be the first indigenous woman in space. i am part of the wailaki tribe, which is part of the round valley indian tribes in northern california, up in covelo. that's very important. i think that we look back at our heritage and our past and think about where we came from. thank

not helping the black community. it's not helping the homeless. it's not helping us at all. >> tonight. it's the very real human cost of a neighborhood closure for the safeway in san francisco's fillmore district is set to shut down. and the community says it's more than just a bag of groceries. neighbors in the fillmore and western edition neighborhoods are still angry tonight, saying, if this plan goes through, it will have long terms, negative implications on the city's black community. the announced closure for that store in the heart of the city on webster street came late last week. tonight right? abc seven news reporter j.r stone is hearing the calls from neighbors and community leaders and brings us this story in less than two months, this safeway grocery store will close. >> according to executives, you're gutting it. >> you're just gutting the neighborhood community members are outraged, saying seniors and handicapped individuals have been forgotten about.

>> those with safeway say they have entered into an agreement to sell the three plus acre site to a real estate company for a mixed use development project to include housing and commercial retail space. >> they need to really do things about taking things from the inner city that we need, and then you develop in housing. housing for who? the homeless. you need to do better than that. >> it is a destruction of a community. >> and those thoughts from doctor amos brown of the naacp are echoed by those that live in the western addition who believe this will directly impact low income black and asian communities, mayor london breed told our partners at the sf standard. this is a real and rare opportunity to add a significant amount of new homes in this part of our city, and even a new grocery store. but plans for a new grocery store have not been solidified, and community members we spoke with took target at the mayor and for london to not even fight for the
