this morning, breaking overnight. >> the missing piece of a commercial plane found in a man's backyard days after it flew off mid-air. new video from inside the plane showing the gaping hole in the fuselage leading to the nationwide grounding of certain boeing planes. >> a new cross country storm on the move, bringing feet of snow and blizzard conditions before taking aim at the northeast, where people are still digging out from this weekend's storm.

you. we begin with a critical discovery in the investigation of that nearly catastrophic alaska air incident. >> the plane's so-called door plug, which fell off last friday after takeoff from portland, oregon, has been located. but the search for answers is just getting started. abc's alison kosik leads us off. i'm excited to announce that we found the door plug. >> the national transportation safety board announcing a schoolteacher in portland, oregon, found the door plug of the alaska airplane in his backyard. >> we are really pleased that we that bob found this. we're going to go pick that up, up and make sure that we begin analyzing it. >> investigators had been looking for the plug, even asking the public for help after the part blew off the boeing 737 max nine in midair on friday, leaving a gaping hole in the fuselage, forcing an emergency landing, investigators believe it holds clues of what caused the accident. we are emergency.

>> we are depressurize and we do need to return back to. we have 177 passengers, investigators say the door plug depressurized just after the plane took off, with more than 100 passengers and crew on board. >> it was described as as chaos and it was very, very silent when the rapid decompression and the door was expelled out of the plane also recovered two passengers. >> cell phones that fell out of the plane. they found a phone sitting on the side of the road that that had apparently fallen 16,000ft. >> so i opened it up and it was an airplane mode with a travel confirmation and baggage claim for alaska >> 1282 ntsb chair jennifer homendy says investigators are documenting the damage, including the door plug frame, before sending parts to a lab. the ntsb also addressing concerns of three previous pressurization alerts in the plane in the months before the

accident. alaska airlines had restricted the plane from flying long distance over water. >> certainly a concern, and it's one that we want to dig into in. >> investigators were able to find the cockpit voice recorder from the plane, but the device was recorded over, leaving them with none of the data to use in their investigation. the faa has temporarily grounded certain boeing 737 max nine aircraft, affecting about 171 planes worldwide. andrew rhiannon allison, thank you. >> our other big story of the morning is the winter weather causing problems for millions of people. a new storm is bringing heavy snow and rain across the country. that follows heavy snow in the northeast over the weekend. this morning, millions of people around the country are digging out as another storm sweeps from coast to coast. >> we've got kind of clobbered the northeast, slammed over the weekend, heavy snow and high winds creating hazardous conditions on major highways. >> i-90 outside boston was

littered with jackknife trucks and cars spun off the road. are you okay? some parts of new england blanketed in a foot or more of snow. boston, seeing its first major snowfall in two years. >> now the shift becomes the scramble of sand and salt trucks. black ice potentially in the morning as commuters get back to work, kids get back to school. >> and now a second storm strengthening in the west is expected to hit much of the country this week. snow is piling up from washington to arizona to parts of california and utah, seeing more than a foot in arizona, flagstaff seeing eight inches and prescott getting hit with more than three in phenix temperatures were expected to hit freezing overnight for the first time in more than five years. now that storm is pushing east with blizzard conditions in colorado and a snowy morning commute in denver and in the south tonight, there is a high risk of flash flooding as heavy rain and wind are expected. large hail and even a chance of tornadoes could hit late into the night and into tuesday from houston to tallahassee, oh my god, this after a tornado barreled through

fort lauderdale on saturday. video shows it ripping through a transformer. officials say it was on the ground for a mile and a half before moving offshore. no injuries were reported. the storm coming out of the plains is expected to hit the northeast tomorrow. we'll have more of the forecast in just a few minutes, secretary of state antony blinken's high stakes trip to the middle east continues today. >> blinken visits the uae and saudi arabia as he tries to prevent the israeli and hamas conflict from spreading. yesterday in qatar, the secretaries criticized some israeli lawmakers for working against a two state solution in gaza. >> we reject the statements by some israeli ministers and lawmakers calling for a resettlement of palestine's outside of gaza. these statements are irresponsible, they're inflammatory and they only make it harder to secure a future of palestinian led gaza. >> at a joint news conference this morning, blinken and qatar's prime minister expressed their commitment to securing their release of hostages in gaza. the qatar based al jazeera

media is accusing israel of targeting two palestinian journalists who were killed in an airstrike in gaza. one of the victims is the son of an al jazeera reporter, the fourth member of his family to die since the fighting began, israel is denying targeting journalists . >> now to defense secretary lloyd austin's hospital stays kept away from the white house and the public for days now. republicans are demanding answers. abc em nguyen joins us live from washington. good morning, m good morning andrew. >> it's an unsettling situation where sources say white house aides are frustrated with the lack of information. publicly. the white house is backing austin, but the incident is giving fresh ammo to republicans . this morning, new details in the alarmingly quiet hospitalizations of defense secretary lloyd austin and a pentagon official telling abc news. the 70 year old four star general had what was described as a minor elective procedure on december 22nd at walter reed

national military medical center before returning home the next day. the white house top pentagon officials, and at least the secretary of state were all unaware of the surgery until after the fact. i wasn't aware of his medical issue. >> in fact, i talked to lloyd last weekend. what i can say is this it has been remains one of the great privileges of my career. over 30 years now working in government to serve alongside lloyd austin. >> about a week after that surgery, austin was admitted to the icu on new year's day after experiencing severe pain. still it was not until three days later on thursday that officials say the white house was informed sunday. the pentagon, saying for privacy reasons were not able to provide additional information. but some argue that level of privacy is not afforded to cabinet secretaries who are high up in the presidential line of succession, even congress was

blindsided by the revelation. >> it's pretty shocking on this because when you're the secretary of defense, you need to make everyone aware that you're actually going to be out of pocket. the white house is publicly standing by austin saying president joe biden and austin spoke on the phone saturday, and that the conversation was warm. >> but a us official telling abc news white house aides are angered by the lack of timely notification. the incident coming amid a heated election with former president trump calling on austin to be fired immediately for improper professional conduct. the pentagon says austin is recovering well and had resumed duties friday. austin himself now saying he could have done a better job informing the public the question remains whether anyone will be held accountable. andrew >> all right. m thank you. now to exclusive new details from the special counsel's investigation into what's described as former president trump's hours of inaction during the january 6th attack. >> sources tell abc news. former white house deputy chief of

staff dan scavino told jack smith's team that trump was just not interested in doing more to stop the violence, as it escalated. scavino, one of trump's most trusted advisors, allegedly said trump's demeanor was very unsettling. >> an investigation is underway in colorado following reports that republican congresswoman lauren boebert got into a physical fight with her ex husband at a restaurant, a source tells the daily beast that jason boebert called police , claiming he was the victim of domestic violence. police confirmed the investigation last night. a statement from lauren boebert campaign said she did not punch her ex in the face and no one was arrested. >> it is time now for a look at your morning weather. good morning. >> we're tracking another winter storm that's set to bring several different elements, including snow, plus severe weather. that severe weather starting up monday along the gulf coast, running through monday night. and actually even into tuesday. meanwhile we've got snowfall across the plains piling up to more than six
