just giving people an extra couple hours to dig out their cars that needed that. this will all be going away and what you see now is going to change completely. we've got flood watches that have been posted. the next storm coming in will be very warm, very wet. rivers are already high. this snow will melt. we have a significant weather delay coming up. robin? >> thanks, rob. 40 states from california to new york are on alerts for blizzard conditions, strong winds, flooding, heavy snow. ginger is here with the track and timing of the new storm. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, robin. every state except north dakota had some sort of alert. it started in the rockies. the second storm has already made its way down into the plains. there will be so much going on, including blizzard warnings around seattle for the first time in more than a decade. we'll get to that third storm. let's talk about the one from texas that extended all e way to the northeast like maine. that means 40 to 65 mile per hour winds just overall.

that's the kind that really moves the patio furniture and anything you've got outdoors. when we're talking about strong tornados, that's for new orleans, late this evening, along i-10, mississippi, alabama, the florida panhandle, george. this is a serious threat for severe storms. then it's heavy rain for most of the northeast and wrap around big time snow in the midwest. >> thanks. new developments after part of an alaska airlines plane fell off in midflight. the missing piece was found and federal officials have grounded the boeing 737 max 9. transportation correspondent gio benitez is in portland, oregon, with the latest. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, george. good morning. this is a major investigation because they need to inspect those other max 9's. it is not an exaggeration to say that this could have been catastrophic. this morning the door plug that flew off an alaska airlines flight in mid air leaving this gaping hole behind now found after a three day search. the ntsb locating it in the back yard of a portland school teacher.

the discovery coming as authorities revealed no data can be pulled from the cockpit voice recorder because it was completely overridden. >> at two hours it rerecords over it so we have nothing. >> reporter: 171 boeing 737 max 9 planes now grounded as the ntsb races to investigate what went wrong. >> 911 emergency. we are depressurized. we do need to return. >> reporter: the alaska jet, with 177 people on board, taking off from portland, oregon, friday night, when all of a sudden the so called door plug, used to cover and seal optional emergency exits, flew off. >> i looked to my left. there is this huge chunk, part of the airplane missing. it was extremely loud. there was wind blowing everywhere. >> reporter: the plane depressurizing. passengers describing the terror on board. >> not only was the plane falling, but also the masks came down. >> i was praying. i was asking god to put angels

under the wings to hold us up. >> reporter: the ntsb revealing the cockpit door flew open when the plug flew off. >> the captain had a portion of the head set pulled off. >> reporter: some passengers losing cell phones out of the plane's pull. the ntsb saying they've recovered at least two from the ground below. flight attendants racing to keep everyone calm and safe. >> i just noticed one flight attendant rushing down the aisle with a portable oxygen mask. she was just trying to do a head count, make sure everybody was counted for. make sure everybody was stable. >> reporter: the plane, which had been in operation since late october, was on its third flight of the day. it took off for california around 5 p.m. pacific when that nearly two-foot wide door plug flew off from the 26th row of the plane where, by chance, the two seat next to it were empty. the ntsb saying it's grateful the incident happened before the plane hit cruising altitude at 30,000 feet where experts say the outcome would have been very different.

>> it could have been a disastrous situation and people could have been sucked out of the airplane. >> reporter: the pilot immediately heading back to portland international airport. the entire ordeal lasting a harrowing 26 minutes. overnight the head of the ntsb telling abc news, pilots flying that same plane over the past month reported warning lights indicating some loss of cabin pressure on the jet. >> a pressuration alert light lit up in the cockpit on december 7th, on january 3rd, on january 4th and it was described as pretty benign. >> reporter: maintenance teams looked at the plane and decided to restrict it from flying long distances over open water. does that concern you at all? >> everything concerns us right now. everything is part of this investigation. we're going to look more at the maintenance records, the electronic logs.

we're going to talk to maintenance personnel and figure out what occurred here. >> reporter: and we also learned overnight that the seat right next to that door plug lost its tray table, its seat back, its head rest. again, george, it is so incredible that no one was sitting in that seat. >> it really is. how deep is the concern about these other max 9's? >> reporter: i asked the ntsb chair woman about other boeing airplanes. we know this particular airplane was manufactured in the same factory as other 737's. so that's a concern. but right now they are focusing exclusively, she said, on this one max 9. we'll see where that investigation rolls off to. >> gio, thank you very much. linsey? >> all right, george. now to secretary of defense lloyd austin on the defensive over the pentagon's failure to inform the white house for days that he had been hospitalized. our chief global affairs anchor martha raddatz is tracking this from jordan. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, linsey.

we've been criscrossing the middle east all week, a key focus of the u.s. military, as fears of a widening war rise. but during this time of crisis, unbeknownst to even the president until just days ago, the secretary of defense was in the intensive care unit and remains hospitalized. this morning, new details about the secret hospitalization of defense secretary lloyd austin, as lawmakers demand to know why it took so long to notify congress and the white house. abc news learning this morning that austin first entered walter reed national medical center on december 22nd while on leave for what the pentagon is calling elective surgery. he was discharged the following day. but on the evening of january 1st, the pentagon says he began to experience severe pain and was sent back to walter reed and admitted to the intensive care unit. the pentagon saying he was placed in the hospital's intensive care unit to ensure immediate access due to his

medical needs but then remained in that location in part due to hospital space considerations and privacy. it was not until thursday, three days later, that austin or anyone in the pentagon disclosed to the white house that he'd been hospitalized. secretary austin releasing this statement from his hospital bed. i recognize i could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed. i commit to doing better. but this is important to say. this was my medical procedure and i take full responsibility for my decisions about disclosure. a u.s. official telling abc news that president biden was exasperated after learning about austin's lack of transparency, but the white house saying biden spoke to austin on saturday, wishing him a speedy recovery in what an official describes as a warm conversation. the department of defense saying deputy defense secretary hicks picked up duties on secretary

austin's behalf from her vacation spot in puerto rico until friday night when the pentagon says austin resumed his duties from the hospital where he is said to be recovering well and in good spirits. but even now, seven days after his urgent arrival at the icu, austin will not reveal why he was taken there in the first place. robin? >> we'll wait and see. all right, martha. thank you. we have the latest now on the race for the white house. the iowa caucuses, where voters will cast the first votes of the 2024 campaign, are just one week away. over the weekend the republican candidates were out in force in the state. rachel scott tracking it all from iowa. good morning to you, rachel. >> reporter: robin, good morning. it was an all out frenzy here over the weekend with republican candidates crisscrossing the state still trying to chip away at donald trump's commanding lead. with the iowa caucuses just one week away, republican candidates are blitzing through the state still trying to catch donald trump.

investigation say that some of the most vivid details come from one of trump's closest advisers, somebody who has worked for him for some three decades and continues to be one of his senior advisers today. the nation marked the three year anniversary of the january 6th attacks, donald trump defended his supporters who ransacked the capitol, calling for those who have been imprisoned for breaking into the building to simply be released. >> i call them hostages. some people call them prisoners. i call them hostages. release the j6 hostages, joe. >> reporter: the justice department charged nearly 1,300 people allegedly involved in the attack, as well as trump himself after lengthy court battles, special counsel jack smith's investigators have spoken to all of the senior aides who were with trump at the white house while the capitol was under attack. including trusted aide dan skavino, a man who has known trump since he was a teenager and worked as his golf caddie.

inside the white house, skavino ran trump's twitter accounts and social media. >> the great dan skavino, the most powerful man in politics. >> reporter: he spent much of january 6th at trump's side. sources say skavino told investigators that trump sat in the dining room next to the oval office as his supporters attacked the capitol. skavino and other aides pleaded with trump to do something to stop the violence, trump sat in front of the tv unresponsive. his arms folded. skavino called trump's demeanor very unsettling. the sources say skavino told investigators that trump was angry, saying the election had been stolen from him and that his supporters were, quote, angry on his behalf. much of that anger was directed at trump's loyal vice president mike pence. sources say another white house aide, nick luna, told investigators that when he informed trump that pence had to

be evacuated to a secure location because of the threat, trump responded, so what? our sources tell us skavino was also asked by investigators whether he ever saw evidence of election fraud in 2020, enough to change the election result. like so many others close to trump, under oath when asked that question, he said, no, he never saw evidence the election was stolen. the trump campaign has responded to our report by saying, quote, dan skavino is one of president trump's longest serving, most loyal allies, and his actual testimony shows just how strong president trump is positioned in this case. linsey? >> all right, jonathan karl for us. thanks so much, jon. now to the college football championship game tonight. undefeated michigan and undefeated washington will battle it out. will reeve is live at the site of that game. all eyes on houston. good morning to you, will.

>> yes, this is majors' first interview since he was convicted of misdemeanor reckless assault and harassment. there's a lot to unpack here. he calls the two-year relationship toxic, dangerous and unhealthy, but he is adamant, he says there was absolutely no physical abuse. >> i told you time isn't what you think. >> reporter: less than a year ago, the name jonathan majors was followed by talk of critical and box office success, sky rocketing fame, even oscar buzz. >> i have come for everything. >> reporter: but this morning a different conversation surrounds that marquee name. >> something about sitting here right now, looking at you, understanding the gravity of the situation. situation that i, in many ways, put myself in. >> reporter: the actor spoke exclusively with abc news for the first time after being convicted in late december for

harassment and misdemeanor reckless assault in the third degree which could carry a penalty up to a year behind bars. why did you decide you wanted to talk now? >> i felt like it was time. a lot has happened in my personal life and my career and the culture. it's about responsibility and coming forward and being brave and giving my part of the story. >> your reaction to the verdict? >> shock. i was absolutely shocked. afraid. understanding this. i said how is that possible based off the evidence, based off the prosecution's evidence, let alone our evidence.

how is that possible? >> reporter: but after only hours of deliberation, a jury of his peers agreed with prosecutors that he did physically injure his then girlfriend grace jabbari in an incident last march. >> what happened exactly, do you know? >> no, i don't know. she's unconscious. >> reporter: that 911 call from majors came hours after an argument broke out in the back seat of an suv, when majors received a text from another woman saying, oh how i wish to be kissing you. jabari testified that when she grabbed the phone, majors tried to get it back, fracturing her finger and giving her a cut behind her ear. she says inside the car you hit her in the face, twisted her arm behind her back, fractured her middle finger. >> yeah. that did not happen. >> how did those injuries come about? >> i wish to god i knew. that would give clarity. that would give me some type of peace about it. >> but you're confident you

didn't do it? >> i have no question. >> video shows majors getting out of the car followed by jabbari, who he then puts back inside the vehicle. what happens next is what the defense remains focused on. majors runs off and jabbari chases after him. >> if you watch those videos and you reverse that and you saw a black man chasing a young white girl down the street, screaming, crying, that man is gonna be shot and killed in the streets of new york city. >> majors defense team shared these photos, which he says show the injuries he received that night which were deemed inadmissable in court. how were you injured? >> my injuries were, a scratch on my hand from clawing for the phone. i had a gash on my -- at the time i had a beard. in my beard i had a finger nail scratch near my cheek from pressure. that bled overnight. >> but prosecutors say majors was the aggressor.

district attorney alvin bragg said the evidence presented throughout this trial illustrated psychological and emotional abuse. in court, prosecutors pointed to a previous argument during which he knocked a candle to the floor. >> completely lost my temper in that moment and threw it on the ground. that's not something i would want my child to do. i did that. i absolutely did that. i feel terrible about it. >> the prosecution also played audio jabbari had recorded earlier in the relationship where majors encouraged her to act more like coretta scott king and michelle obama. >> i am a great man, a great man. i am doing great things, not just for me, but for my culture and the world. that is actually the position i'm in. the woman that supports me needs to be a great woman. >> there are some who question, especially in the black community, as you are probably well aware. people are saying, why was he telling this woman to be like coretta scott king and michelle

but later tonight, new orleans, mobile, right along i-10 mississippi through the florida panhandle. please be aware. tornados, strong tornados possible. we're gonna move that threat east. so it goes up into south carolina tomorrow. it's the heavy rain on top of the snow that already fell that we've got flood watches in place. there's snow on the back side of that in the midwest. something else to note. tomorrow, robin, when we're getting all that rain an after ward, it is going to be super windy, gusts easily 40 to 60 miles per hour and some places even higher. >> noted. thank you, ginger. now to the new developments overnight after part of a passenger plane fell off in mid flight. the missing piece was found, as federal officials ground the boeing 737 max 9. let's go back to our transportation correspondent gio benitez there in portland, oregon. good morning again, gio. >> reporter: hey, robin. good morning again. yeah, this is a critical investigation to figure out if other max 9's were affected here. but again, as you just said, we have a missing piece of the puzzle now, and it's really important. overnight, after a three day search, that missing door plug was found in a teacher's back

this morning michael bolton opening up about his health scare, revealing he had emergency brain surgery. the two time grammy award winning singer/songwriter behind hits like "how i am supposed to live without you." ♪ how am i supposed to live without you ♪ >> reporter: and the heartfelt rendition of "when a man loves a woman." ♪ when a man loves a woman ♪ >> reporter: bolton getting candid in a statement posted on instagram saying, just before the holidays, it was discovered that i had a brain tumor, which required immediate surgery, and the surgery was a success. according to the american brain tumor association, brain tumors can affect people of all ages, races, ethniciies and genders, and over 1.3 million americans are living with a primary or secondary metastatic brain tumor today. >> if the tumor is located in a part of the brain that controls language, we would expect language to be impacted.

whereas, if the tumor is in part of a brain that has more to do with movement or memory or vision, we would expect those things to be impacted. >> reporter: 70-year-old bolton has been making music for more than five decades. also sharing in his post, for the next couple of months i will be devoting my time and energy to my recovery, which means i'll have to take a temporary break from touring. >> after brain surgery, the recovery happens over weeks to months. for most people it's going to involve some kind of combination of physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, depending on what their individual needs are. >> reporter: as you heard there, doctors say when it comes to brain tumors symptoms can vary based on where it is located. common signs are headaches, confusion, memory loss, seizures and weakness. of course, contact your doctor immediately if you are experiencing any of those symptoms. as for bolton, he says he hopes to recover, get back to performing for his devoted fans soon. we're hoping so, too, linsey. >> we are. i love hearing his music. thank you.

more with my exclusive interview with jonathan majors, the actor convicted of misdemeanor reckless assault and harassment just as his career was taking off. majors says he always intended to take the witness stand but didn't in the end because he felt prior testimony was so compelling that there was nothing else for him to add. but now that the jury has spoken, he felt it was time to tell his story. >> this has been very, very, very hard and very difficult and confusing in many ways. >> reporter: jonathan majors breaking his silence just weeks after manhattan jury found him guilty of misdemeanor reckless assault of his ex-girlfriend grace jabbari. the actor at times emotional. >> i'm sorry. i haven't seen my daughter in a long time. you know? a lot of it has to do with this situation.

>> reporter: in a split verdict, majors was found not guilty of two other misdemeanor, assault with intent to cause physical injury and aggravated assault. they're saying you didn't intend to injure her. >> right. >> but the result of your recklessness injured her. >> right. >> were you reckless? >> i was reckless with her heart. >> not with her body? >> not with her body. >> the physical altercation started inside an suv after majors received a suggestive text message from another woman. hours later, after majors placed a 911 call, police found jabbari unconscious on the closet floor in their apartment and seen in this body camera footage. do you feel like you did anything wrong on the night of march 25th that you could relive that night? >> i wouldn't have picked her up. i wouldn't have picked her up. i wouldn't have put her back in the car. i wouldn't have tried to keep her in the car. i would have gotten out the car and ran. immediately.

>> the two met back in 2021 on the set of ant man and the wasp. the prosecution described your relationship with grace jabbari as tumultuous and abusive. how would you describe your relationship? >> i loved grace. our relationship was not healthy, you know. that began to reveal itself over time. >> why did you stay? >> i was scared. with the red flags i found. i use this word, this is dangerous. this is months before the incident. i should have been brave. i should have said no, this isn't working. i should have walked away. i didn't. >> troubling signs in the relationship were revealed when prosecutors presented text messages where majors expressed suicidal thoughts saying, maybe i'm such a monster and horrible

man that i don't deserve it and i should just kill myself. were you suicidal? >> ideations of removing myself from situations permanently. that's a thought that i have had since i was a kid, you know? since i was a young boy on a farm in texas. it's not there any more. i'm doing the work to keep it at bay and make sure it's not there anymore. >> through it all, majors' new girlfriend, actress megan good, has remained by his side, even present for our interview. how would you describe your relationship? >> she's an angel. she's held me down like, like a coretta, you know? i'm so blessed to have her, you know? the relationship is still fresh but, you know i think i found' her.

>> the march 2023 incident thrust majors' dating history into the forefront. a rolling stone article in june detailed multiple allegations of abusive behavior dating back to majors' relationships in college, allegations majors denies. his attorneys offered past partners to defend him. have you ever had issues with domestic abuse? >> i have witnessed it. never participated, you know? i have been smacked up before but never exercised it. those relationships went back to when i was 21, 22 years old. i just think, was i a jerk, you know? was i a mean guy, you know? yeah, knowing what i know now

like, oh -- severe depression, childhood trauma. i have had very few relationships so i can gather what situations we're talking about. yeah, i was not the best boyfriend all the time. >> but never hit a woman? >> never hit a woman. i have never put my -- my hands have never struck a woman ever. >> after gaining critical acclaim for films like "the last black man in san francisco" majors' once red hot career is now seemingly at a standstill. >> how are you feeling? >> moments after the verdict, marvel studios dropped him. he was set to play a prominent character in upcoming films. >> i am cane! >> but despite the possibility of serving time, majors believes the script for his career is still being written. do you think you'll ever work in hollywood again? >> yeah. i pray i do. it's god's plan and god's timing.

>> for those who say, look, he's convicted at this point, what would you say? do you deserve a second chance? >> i think i do. i hope other people think that. >> during closing arguments jonathan majors' attorney said his worst fears as a black man calling 911 in america came true. those words brought majors to tears in court. he said race very much played a role in his arrest. he claims he was injured. he points to surveillance injury where grace jabbari pursued him. she was arrested but never prosecuted. he calls that unjust. we'll have much more streaming tonight on the abc news live primetime and thursday on impact by nightline. over to you, ginger. thanks, linsey. phoenix is bracing for their first freeze in five years. it's been awhile after that remarkably hot and unprecedented summer, too.

this is something better releases the attachment to that desire. put out what we want and see what happens. >> i like how you also said turn obstacle into an opportunity. our family motto, my sister comes up with one every year. love more in 2024. it's about the more. when things start going awry, you might have the best intentions but things aren't going quite how you think they should be, what do you do? >> in december i had a bit of an inner shakedown, robin. >> you did? >> you know those moments where you're like, things are not exactly how i want them to be. while i was going through that inner shakedown, breakdown to break through, my mantra kept consistently, over and over was, obstacles are detours in the right direction. >> say that again. >> i woke up every day and i would say thank you, these obstacles are detours in the right direction. so someone is out there right now and they're struggling and wanting more in 2024 but they don't see the path forward.

say thank you to the obstacles because they reveal to us what is of our highest and best. so if you can open your heart to that, such a big shift. just shift your energy in the next moment to a new path. >> it's about affirmation, mantras. i know you always have a deck of mantras. i know you have a deck. >> thank you. >> okay. this is one i experienced today. when i'm tuned into the energy of abundance, i become abundant. when we're claiming the energy of how we want to feel, we create more of it. know the thing when you wake up in the morning that the sheets are nice and warm and you have that beautiful cup of coffee. or when you're doing your makeup, with your family. you're giving that preacher prayer in the morning. that's you not saying, i'm tired. that's you saying, i'm leaning into the abundance in that moment. each moment offers us the

opportunity to lean into what's working and thriving. when we focus on what's thriving, we create more of what we want. >> i'm so glad you're saying this. it's about the moment. we're always looking back or forward and not just really taking in the moment. in fact, you said sheets around you that are cold or whatever that feels good. >> in this moment, i'm with you. i love seeing you every new year. >> i always look forward to this as well. i love how you say, and sometimes people don't understand this, get outside of yourself. random acts of kindness can really be something we should manifest and be part of our new year? >> yeah. i have a little 5-year-old at home. in my home, we really practice what we preach. i wanted to teach him a really powerful manifesting tool. not even a manifesting tool, just a happiness tool. random acts of kindness. this is how i live my life. i'll randomly buy the coffee for the woman behind me, or i will just engage in conversation.

so i wanted to teach my kid this. i went on -- i am a full blown canvas designer now. if you need any ads here at gma, i can do it. i made this piece of art. it was a calendar. it say ollie's random acts of kindness. has a soccer ball in the corner. we put this on the fridge. every day ollie will do a random act of kindness. he'll walk up to the fridge and mark off how many he gets. i want you to have one. you can have it in your office or dressing room. just the intention we make to just show up for people randomly. it just infuse us with so much positive energy. you feel so good when we're kind and caring to the world. >> it just has to be a little thing. >> tiny thing. add them up. >> i know. sometimes we feel everything has to be big. >> one small action daily. >> always look forward to it. my friends and family are exhaling right now. >> you did it.

very exciting stuff. >> you are are genius with collaborators. how do you fine your collaborators? >> do you want to do it? >> sure, let's do it. >> you're too slow.
