it's tuesday january 9th. from abc news in new york this this is america this morning. >> good morning everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to you i'm rhiannon ally. we begin with the widespread winter weather causing problems from coast to coast. >> nearly every state in the u.s. faces extreme weather conditions, from blizzard warnings in the plains to tornado watches in the south. >> it is definitely sticking. >> this morning, the storm that caused whiteout conditions in oklahoma. this vehicle pile up in new mexico and shut down highways in nebraska. and now that storm is on the move. >> this is one of two very powerful storms that are forecast for this week, with nearly every weather related hazard in play. >> it includes tornado watches in texas and louisiana, with at least one confirmed twister touching down in cold spring, texas, and tens of thousands in the lone star state are already without power at the college football championship game in houston, the stadium springing a

leak from the heavy rain today, thatrillionain will drench areas from florida to new england. governors in north carolina and new jersey declaring a state of emergency ahead of the storm. >> 1 to 4in of heavy rain, strong winds and a potential coastal flooding in new jersey. >> they're concerned about a repeat of this neighborhood flooding from last month and in communities still doing this from this past weekend, storm shoveling and shoveling and shoveling several inches of rain could melt snow, causing local rivers to rise. widespread outages are also a concern from the jersey shore to coastal new england, with winds gusting up to 65mph. tonight there are also blizzard warnings in oregon, washington and idaho, and rare frost warnings in parts of southern california and even arizona. we'll take a closer look at the forecast coming up next, the investigation of an explosion at a hotel in downtown fort worth, texas. >> the blast injured at least 21 people, one of whom is in critical condition. officials believe a gas leak is what caused the explosion. a restaurant at the sandman

signature hotel has been undergoing construction, but it's unclear if that is where the blast occurred. >> it was just a huge boom. i was blown back. i feel really lucky to be here, standing here right now. more than two dozen rooms at the hotel were occupied at the time. >> a driver was taken into custody after crashing an suv into an exterior gate at the white house complex. the secret service says the vehicle was searched and cleared for any hazardous materials, and an investigation is now underway. it happened yesterday afternoon while president biden was out of town. >> now to new safety concerns surrounding certain boeing 737 jets, a second airline is now reporting loose hardware during inspections. it comes after a door plug flew off of that type of plane mid-flight right this morning. a second airline is now reporting apparent insulation issues related to boeing 737 max. nine planes after a fuselage section blew out of an

alaska airlines plane mid-air. alaska airlines says the inspections of its fleet have revealed loose hardware visible on some of its max nines and united airlines, which operates 79 of the planes, says it found loose bolts on some of its door plugs. >> the fact that loose bolts have been found in other similar aircraft indicates that possibly this is an endemic problem that was created in manufacturing the faa grounded all 737 max nines in the wake of the alaska airlines incident last week, when a door plug, which is used to cover optional emergency exits detached 16,000ft in the air. >> cell phones, tray tables and headrests sucked out of the cabin and a teenager's t-shirt ripped off. >> that's why he didn't have a shirt on, was the suction had just torn it off. you could see some of his injuries and how and the redness. >> no one was injured by pure luck. no one was sitting in the two seats next to the door plug on sunday after a three day

search, a teacher in portland found the section of the plane in his backyard. >> it was a surprise to find the door in my backyard because with all the portland to fall in, it was pretty surprising that it fell in my backyard. >> the door plug will now be taken to a lab in washington, dc to be examined. >> the picture of the door tells me instantly that the door did not come apart itself. there is more than likely a problem here with the latching mechanism or with the way it was installed. the fuselage of boeing 737 max nine was manufactured by a company called spirit aerosystems at a plant in kansas , where it's then shipped to a boeing plant in washington. >> spirit aerosystems, saying in a statement they are a committed partner with boeing on the 737 program, and we continue to work together with them on this matter. boeing saying they are committed to ensuring every boeing airplane meets design specifications and the highest safety and quality standards. we regret the impact this has had on our customers and their passengers overnight, the ntsb

said. they are still looking for four bolts, which were supposed to hold that door plug in place. united and alaska airlines did not say how many planes had loose hardware. >> the countdown is on for the republican presidential hopefuls . with the iowa caucuses just six days away, it's a last ditch effort to win over voters in the hawkeye state and chip away at former president trump's commanding lead. abc's em nguyen joins us now with the very latest. >> good morning m good morning andrew. yeah. republican presidential candidates are crisscrossing iowa making their final pitch ahead of next week's caucuses. this as president biden turns up the heat against former president trump less than a week away until the iowa caucus, the first contest of the 2024 presidential election cycle . president joe biden taking aim at his predecessor at an event in south carolina denouncing white supremacy as poison points to january 6th and donald trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. >> as an extreme movement of

america, the maga republicans led by a defeated president, is trying to steal history. now the losers are taught to concede when they lose and he's a loser. >> meanwhile, in an interview with lou dobbs, the gop frontrunner making a bold prediction that the us economy would crash and saying he hopes it would happen this year because he doesn't want to be another president. hoover who took office when the economy was stable but later had to tackle the start of the great depression. >> we have an economy that's so fragile, it's just running off the fumes and when there's a crash, i hope it's going to be during this next 12 months because i don't want to be herbert hoover. trump trying to take credit for the current economy that defied expectations in 2023. >> with inflation down, job growth high and unemployment rates low, trump's gop rivals are crisscrossing iowa in a close fight for second place. former un ambassador nikki haley

raising the temperature on trump just because president trump says something doesn't make it true. haley also taking on more attacks from florida governor ron desantis after she didn't mention slavery. when asked what caused the civil war, ron desantis, quick to criticize trump, who suggested the war could have been avoided through negotiations. >> he couldn't even negotiate funding for a border wall when he had a republican congress. >> the former president today also expected to attend arguments in washington as a federal appeals court considers whether trump has presidential immunity in the federal election interference case, a lower court previously ruled that he does not. andrew we'll be watching for that. >> and thank you. >> well, the pentagon has ordered a 30 day review triggered by a defense secretary lloyd austin's secretive hospital stay, an effective immediately, a wider group of officials will be notified in the event of a similar situation. it took three days to inform the white house after austin was admitted to intensive care, with complications from a

♪ morning america, we're right here. >> and we got you, we got you, we got you. >> well attempts at the first commercial moon landing ran into a major problem on monday. astrobotic abandoned its plans due to a critical fuel leak aboard the peregrine spacecraft. the landing was set for next month, but its goal now is simply to get as close to the moon as possible. >> five days after causing courtroom mayhem in las vegas, a convicted criminal faced the judge. he attacked dobra. redin wore a spit mask, mittens and shackles. judge mary kay holthus sentenced him to four years for attempted battery last week's sentencing ended with redin charging holthus and punching her. he'll face a different judge today when he's charged for that incident in california.

>> authorities are hoping the public will help them solve a 32 year mystery. they are desperately trying to find the name of a woman who was killed by one of the country's most notorious criminals. here's abc's lionel moise. this morning. >> officials in riverside county, california are releasing these images, hoping to identify the only remaining unidentified victim of convicted serial killer keith hunter jesperson. so easily able to kill her and just dump her on the side of the road like she was trash. >> and she's not. and she deserves dignity and respect. >> reporter. the body of the woman known as claudia was discovered along highway 95 in august of 1992. jasper was referred to as the happy face killer because he drew smiley faces on letters to the media and police. he confessed to murdering claudia and seven other women. >> jesperson is currently serving multiple life sentences for having killed eight women across the country. this woman is the last of all his victims

to remain unidentified. >> it's believed claudia was hitchhiking eventually getting into a truck with jesperson. but the two got into a heated argument during a stop. >> this would be claudia's last meal. after eating, the two had a heated argument. jespersens truck. this is where he killed her. jesperson continued east on the i-10. he turned onto highway 95 towards blythe, where he left the woman's body on the side of the road. >> authorities say advances in dna technology. the woman's remains, and a recent jailhouse interview with jesperson have helped, adding that claudia may not be her real name. >> she is described as a white female with fair complexion. she was around 25 to 35 years old at the time of her death. she was about five feet seven inches tall, with medium build. she likely had brown or dyed blond hair, also releasing images of a rendering of the shirt she was wearing when she was found, and a distinct tattoo of two small

the first major us carrier led by a woman president and chief operating officer. joanna geraghty will assume the role next month after ceo robin hayes announced monday he's stepping down on the advice of his doctor. >> we are getting more details and more images of an incredible christmas week rescue near chicago. body camera video shows police as they found matt ream. he had been trapped six days in his pickup truck. look at it all smashed up there under a bridge near the indiana illinois border. now, ream says he swerved to avoid a deer on interstate 94 and then wound up in the ravine. he was pulled out the day after christmas. >> this is a crazy thing. i've never seen something like this. he's been trapped down here for that long. that's insane. >> i have learned how to walk again at 27. i never thought that it was going to be challenging for me to do that, but it is. >> two fishermen found ream and then alerted police. one of his legs did have to be amputate.
