one for the scattered showers. your biggest impact? just some slick roadways, a little bit of a slower travel. this morning. we're not talking heavy rain by any means. you can see the wet taxiways at sfo. we'll have those showers in the north bay mainly around 8 a.m. then those showers spreading south and east throughout the morning. but this front is fast. the afternoon the sun shines back out, we are dry and temperatures in the mid and upper 50s. hi gloria, good morning. >> yeah, i had a little bit of rain this morning when i drove into work, so you might experience that as well. during your morning commute. some slick roads out there. give yourself a little bit of extra time today. this is a live look outside at our bay bridge toll plaza camera . the metering lights flipped on at 531 this morning, and the backup approaching the toll plaza is past the end of the parking lot. but as you can see right there, if you take the carpool lanes, you won't have any waits there this morning and a live look at our san mateo-hayward bridge camera. it is busy for those who are heading westbound toward the peninsula, and it looks like our camera may be froze up right now. okay, it's back, so that's

good, but no major issues. despite the slick roads this morning. >> guys, thanks for you today. boeing is having an all employee meeting to discuss the response to the alaska airlines incident when part of a 737 max nine plane flew off midair. it comes as both united airlines and alaska alaska airlines say they have found loose parts on multiple grounded max nine aircraft. the chair of the ntsb provided new information about that alaska airlines flight. they've talked to flight attendants, and those attendants have revealed they were concerned about four unaccompanied minors and three young children who were in the cabin. >> the communications was so poor that they felt like they they really needed guidance and information on uh. and it was it was pretty terrifying event. >> one of the passengers on the flight said the force of the door blown out was so strong that it actually ripped off a passenger shirt. >> so at first i thought it was just the window. and then i realized it was the whole panel

and that the kid who was sitting in that row, like his seatbelt, had saved his life, because that's why he didn't have a shirt on, was the suction had just torn it off yesterday, the ntsb retrieved the door plug that had blown off. >> door plug is just a name for the panel. a teacher in portland, oregon, found it in his backyard and it will be sent to the ntsb lab in washington, dc to be examined. the ntsb also says it's looking for the bolts that were supposed to be holding that door panel in place. they're looking into the possibility that they a broke off or b they were never installed in the first place. so if you are flying, you can expect more delays and cancellations today as a result of that issue. >> abc seven news reporter lena howland live at sfo. with how travelers are being impacted there. this morning, lena kumasi here at here at sfo, they are already experiencing more than 50 cancellations and 25 delays

as of about 4:00 this morning. >> and most of those are coming from alaska and united airlines. now, this is something that has been causing problems for travelers here at sfo. and across the country since saturday, when the faa grounded more than 177 37 max nine aircrafts, still, passengers here at the airport were frantically trying to book new routes to their destinations. one couple we spoke with got a text two nights ago saying their alaska flight from san jose to oahu was canceled and the value was deposited in an alaska wallet. they ended up at the sfo united terminal on an alternate flight paid for out of pocket. >> it's been like tricked, you know? and i wanted to use the credit for taking another uh- ticket. uh- for today from alaska. and the price was, yes, it was double it was double. they should have made it automatically refunding people's tickets, not really making you call them waiting for 3.5 hours.

not being able. i mean, i use the chat option, i use the phone option, i use another yesterday united said they have started some preliminary inspections on their fleet, including 79 of these planes in question, and confirmed they have already found loose bolts and other parts on some door plugs. >> alaska airlines said that their crews have prepared each aircraft to be immediately ready for the for these required inspections, just as soon as those instructions are ready. an official inspections are likely to take about eight hours to complete per plane. live at sfo lena howland abc seven news. >> thank you lena, we have new data that could support the claims that an incomplete freeway project is now endangering east bay drivers. sections of interstate 80 and hercules have either no painted lanes at all, beat up reflectors, or a temporary paint job. and this is three months after caltrans says that it finished repaving the lanes. the chp says 16 crashes have happened since then.

>> it's a concern in the morning when the sun's reflecting you don't see any lines. it's a concern when it rains and it's a concern at night. so let's say more than half the time that the freeway is being used. a lot of residents and drivers cannot see the designated lines at all. >> residents say they are navigating the area as a dangerous guessing game. not sure where to go, where to change lanes, when to merge into traffic from the on ramp. caltrans acknowledges the issues and it's blaming their contractor and the weather. >> the contractor did not get out and complete the work that was assigned, and we got into sort of the rainy season. and when the rainy season hits, then we struggle with keeping the striping up. the agency confirmed it is working on getting lanes painted in the coming days. >> a new lawsuit has been filed representing hundreds of residents accusing their counties of negligence. the images were striking. one winter ago, the flooding in

pah'-ha-roe, a town with a large farm worker population, the suit claims monterey and santa cruz counties are responsible for the failure of a levee, and which caused widespread flooding and damage. some people feel it's their only hope of repair, anticipating impacts to last for generations. we've reached out to both counties for comment, but because it's pending litigation, both said that's why they had to decline a heads up. if you are near the water this week, because king tides are making their way back to the bay area, starting tomorrow. so it means minor flooding in some areas. these tides occur twice a year when the earth comes into alignment with the sun and moon, creating extremely high tides along the coast. new this morning, 2023 was officially the hottest year on record. >> glory is at the live desk, with the data just announced this morning. it's a warning about the threat of human caused climate change. it is reggie aqui. >> this newly released report from europe's copernicus climate agency is alarming. it shows the global temperature is now

flirting with the warming threshold that nations wanted to stay within to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. officials say that the extremes that were observed over the last few months provide a dramatic testimony of how far we are now from the climate in which our civilization developed, according to the report, 2023 was 1.48°c above pre-industrial times. that's barely below the 1.5 degree threshold that nations agree to stay within. during the 2015 paris climate talks, the copernicus report said that greenhouse gases from fossil fuels were the main factor in warming, but an el nino weather pattern also played a role. the previous record was set in 2016. on this morning, climate scientists are urging us all to do what we can to help reduce emissions and slow the warming. nasa the national oceanic and atmospheric administration and the research group berkeley earth are

mouth and face, all covered during his court appearance yesterday. he received a sentence of 19 months to four years in prison for attacking someone with a baseball bat. last year, judge mary kay holthus stressed that the sentence was the same one she planned to impose before. before reddin attacked her last week. whoa whoa whoa, hey hey. reddin is also facing new charges for this attack last week. that case will be heard by a different judge in the north bay. an emergency shelter and transitional housing program for homeless youth in crisis is

hoping to raise a million dollars by next week. the interim director of social advocates for youth. or say, says money is needed to keep its dream center open. they need to restructure and downsize, she says. new laws limiting the number of youth that can be housed is making this space too large to manage. nearly 70 kids are living at the facility now. they not only have shelter, but access to mental health counseling and job assistance. we spoke with one woman who says it was a life saver for her as a teen. we know and can see all of those kids that we've never met, but we know they're there for not only today that need swease help, but those tomorrow and in the future that will have zero place to go, zero support and we're going to lose some lives as a result. sonoma county supervisor susan gorin says she will be meeting with shelter staff to find temporary solutions for the first time in 40 years. >> researchers are getting a

better picture of how many mountain lions roam the golden state, and it's actually far fewer than we thought, according to the uc davis, california mountain lion project, about 4500 mountain lions live across the state. officials used to think that number was around 6000. the study also found the densest populations were in forests and humboldt and mendocino counties. they were least dense in the high desert east of the sierra in inyo county. mountain lions are under consideration for threatened status. the california fish and game commission is expected to rule on that issue later this year. >> on the peninsula, a surprise for a lifeguard working at mavericks near half moon bay. so this is the moment drake stanley encountered a young sea lion perched atop his jet ski. stanley was out on the water, ready to be rescued. surfer ready to. i should say, rescue surfers during mavericks. he says the sea lion pup may have been running away from sharks nearby and gotten separated from his mom. marine rescue eventually came out. they helped to take over care, but stanley

out. we'll have sunshine to finish out the day today. temperatures in the upper 50 and then another front is going to move through here. tomorrow we'll track some isolated showers first thing in the morning, but it looks like tomorrow morning's rain is light and it's steadier in the afternoon. by 3 p.m. you can see those steadier showers across the peninsula. the east bay, the south bay. and we'll find thatrillionainfall totals will range anywhere from about a 10th to up to a half of an inch of rain. when you take today and tomorrow's fronts together, rainfall estimates may be a little bit higher. where we see a downpour around ukiah. but again, the biggest impact is going to be slick travel. some slower travel times this morning and tomorrow we are tracking a winter storm warning beginning at 10 p.m. tonight. the heaviest snow falls above 4000ft in its heaviest tomorrow morning. wednesday morning is when the bulk of this is going to fall. 1 to 2ft of snow. very likely, if not a little bit more on some of our highest peaks. so back here at home today, showers to sun, temperatures going into the upper 50s for daytime highs. tonight we'll bring back some of

see what else you did because i'm like, what else do you do besides sit in the cold. look at the lights which is great. what else do you do. yeah like but after that, what are we doing right. >> and you can do year round. so really it changes when you end up going. and in 2020 for the northern lights, no matter where you see them, we have a solar maximum. so noaa's forecast is like you better go this next year. so if you do get inspired, i'd say it's a pretty good bet that you're going to have a good trip if you plan one. okay. i didn't know that. >> was it. this is going to i don't know anything about this. this is going to sound like a dumb question, but was it like a very easy thing to do, or is it challenging to get where you were? >> yes, it was easy. okay. so it depends on where and how you're doing it, but i think it would be pretty easy from you all. it should just be one stop in vancouver and then you'd go up. so that's yellowknife. it's far right, like distance. i'm sure it's like a four hour, three hour flight from vancouver. but once you're there, it's easy. then that's why yellowknife specifically that part of canada is so good for the northern

lights because they have many more nights where they are clear. no clouds. they're far enough from the mountains. there geography is just right there under what's called the aurora oval in like the heart of it. so you have, if you have clear skies, which is likely, you have a 98% chance of a show. and so with three nights, we saw them every single night. >> are that is that was what i was really trying to ask. do all that eloquently. yeah. good it's like old faithful. yeah. >> and some nights are more brilliant than others. the third night that we had was just like picture perfect five hours, where we drove around with an aurora hunter. we saw different like views and we had different backgrounds for all the instagram shots and i would say that with more time like that, what i found really interesting, i knew i was going to love the science and be all like nerding out, but it all melted away and it was the spirituality and the connection to the indigenous culture that i learned about. >> so you'll hear about this. okay? >> i cannot wait to see this. >> yeah, okay, i like this. thank you for giving us inspiration for 2024.

25 delays so far this morning. now that all stems, most of those flight cancellations are coming from alaska and united airlines. this comes after the faa grounded more than 170 of the planes in question on saturday, following friday's mid-air incident, which left a gaping hole in an ontario bound flight 79 of the grounded 737 max nine aircraft were from united airlines yesterday. they said they have started some preliminary inspections on their fleet and confirmed they have already found loose bolts and other parts on some door plugs, but this has added a new frightening dimension to air travel. for many who can't stop thinking about it as they board flights here at sfo, including a new mom. i'm >> i imagine sitting in that seat and having my infant and not being her, not being buckled in, she would have flown right out. so it's definitely terrifying to think about. it's unlocked a new a new mom fear. in the meantime, alaska airlines said our technicians have

>> thank you gloria. the us supreme court has declined to hear a challenge of california's flavored cigaret ban. the r.j. reynolds tobacco company appealed the ban, signed by governor newsom in 2020, arguing it conflicts with the federal tobacco control act. that act allows the fda to regulate the sale of cigarets, but stopped short of allowing states to ban certain products. the justices declined to hear the case without comment. we're getting an idea of what p-g-and-e's bills might look like as we get into the colder months, the utility says. regulator approved rate changes will account for lower natural gas prices compared to last winter. we'll see close to a 10% decrease, saving you a little less than 20 bucks a month on gas bills. however for other cpuc approved rate changes will cost you more than before. there's a 13% rate hike to pay for burying power lines for wildfire prevention, and that may not be the last increase we see this year. according to one study i've seen
