including attempted murder. a dramatic reminder of the threats faced every day by court officials. we look into what's being done to fight this alarming problem. an almost unbelievable moment. >> [ bleep ]. >> juju: a defendant leaping over the bench, attacking a judge. all caught on video last week, leaving so many to wonder, how could this happen inside a courtroom? >> it is a wild and bizarre world when you're seeing images that look like they should be in the wwe that are now in a courtroom. when people are launching themselves at judges. >> i was actually shocked when i saw the video, that anybody could actually get that close and aggressive with a judge and not be stopped. >> juju: the story began last wednesday. justice d just as he was being sentenced for going at somebody with a baseball bat. a routine sentencing.

>> you have the client feeling they can put their two cents in, which often is a good thing. >> i feel like i shouldn't sit in prison for a -- >> normal until the judge says, i'm not going to give you probation, i'm not going to give you what you want. >> reporter: judge mary kay wolfus reminding him of his long record. >> got a lot going on, sir. >> juju: still, he asks for leniency. >> i'm not doing drugs. i'm not out there committing crimes now. i don't feel i feel i should be given a shot because i'm in a better place than i was. i'm a person who never stops trying to do the right thing. >> juju: the judge denied his request for probation. >> i appreciate that, but i think it's a time you get a taste of something else because -- >> [ bleep ]. >> juju: redden leaping over the

defense table, landing on top of her, a brawl with a court marshal and a clerk, all injured. redden's family coming to his defense. >> i just think his reactions were not premeditated. it was triggered because he seemed to have been pleading for his freedom. >> i understand the family's advocacy of redden in the sense of saying he was triggered or that the words that were used by the judge kind of set him off. but that's kind of a double-edged sword. part of a judge's job is to see whether or not this person is a danger to themselves or society. so think that argument doesn't really help him as much as the family may think. >> juju: courthouse officials telling abc news the judge had injuries and a marshal who sustained injuries were transported to the hospital. yesterday, a very different scene. multiple sheriffs surrounding redden, his hands covered, his body shackled, a spit guard over

his face. >> i want to make it clear that i am not changing or modifying the sentence i was in the process of imposing that week before i was interrupted by defendant's actions. >> reporter: the judge handing down the sentence he was attempting to announce last week. this time without interruption. >> according to the laws of the state, the court does now sentence you 19 to 48 months in the department of corrections -- >> hello, are you mr. redden? >> yes, i am. >> juju: this morning, redden in court again, now facing a new judge and 13 new counts, including felony attempted murder after last week's courtroom attack. >> mr. redden, have you been given a copy of the criminal complaint this morning? >> yes, i have been given one. >> do you understand these charges? >> yes, i understand. >> juju: once again flanked on all sides by sheriff's deputies. >> he had multiple felonies and multiple misdemeanors on his record. i would expect, both in the nature of those charges and his history of violence, that he'd get close to those decades in prison. >> juju: redden's preliminary hearing for the attack on judge

holfus next month. this attack showing how vulnerable judges can be -- inside and outside the courtroom. u.s. marshals reporting over thief hundred threats and inappropriate communications were made against federal judges in 2022. that number doesn't include judges at the city and state level. back in october of last year, maryland judge andrew wilkinson was fatally shot in his driveway following what authorities say was a targeted attack. in june of 2022, former wisconsin judge john roemer was killed in what police believe was a targeted shooting in his home. his son found him zip tied to a chair. it happens to judges at the highest levels, as well. in 2022, a man was arrested near supreme court justice brett kavanaugh's maryland home, carrying things like a gun, a knife, and zip ties. while in recent weeks, two officials overseeing cases against former president donald trump have been targeted by swatting incidents.

>> one of the big fears in all these swatting cases is when you take a tactical s.w.a.t. team to a house and believe that somebody's being held, shot, whatever it might be, they're going to go there in a pretty aggressive way because they want to save lives. >> juju: those threats can range from menacing but distant, to present and deadly. >> i know that i'm going to strive every morning to be the best person that i can be. my son gave his life for his father and i. >> juju: this judge's son, daniel, was tragically killed when he was 20 years old. >> we struggled to have a baby. i had four miscarriages, three before him, one after him. from the moment that little boy came to this world, he was the center of our universe. >> juju: her only child murdered in their home. her husband, mark, seriously

wounded. judge salas sat down with abc's robin roberts in 2020, recounting the devastation she and her family experienced. >> danny was downstairs talking to me, as he always did. he said, "keep talking to me, mom, i love talking to you." and it was at that exact second that the doorbell rang. and before i could tell him, let dad handle it, he shot up the stairs. the next thing i hear is, boom. then i hear, "no!" i just got on the floor, and i saw my son. i knew at some point mark was screaming," call 911." i tried to do that. and i lifted his shirt. and i saw the bullet hole. and mark managed to crawl back. and we were both just watching him. fade away. >> juju: the fbi identified

daniel's killer as disgruntle new york city lawyer roy dan haalander, a self-described anti-feminist. >> the fbi discovered the shooter had what they called a complete dossier, a complete dossier of you and your family. do you recall any dealings with this man? >> vaguely. vaguely. it had been months if not a year when he last appeared before me. >> juju: one day after daniel's murder, hallander was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. she helped draft the daniel judicial security and privacy act, named after her slain son. congress pass the it in 2022 with a similar bill passing in salas' home state of new jersey, meant to protect the personal information of judges, giving them more power to redact their

spend this much money on a dog party? >> i think that most people would, for their human children. a lot of people do, for their human children. and she's my child. >> reporter: it's a phenomenon some researchers and ethicists say is part of a larger trend. >> there are a lot more cats and dogs living in homes with us. during covid, that intensified it's unlike any time that we've ever been in the past. >> reporter: according to a pew research center survey, half of the 200 million plus american pet owners not only consider their pets to be a part of their family, but say they are as much a part of their family as a human member. and they spend like it, too 2022, americans spent $136.8 billion on their animal offspring. >> i think we're drawn to cute animals for a deep biological reason, and that is the same reason we're drawn to babies. it's wired into our brain. >> reporter: with their newfound status as part of the fam, pets

first birthday parties for their kids. then we wanted to also celebrate our kids because we're not planning to have human kiddos. it was just kind of like, let's do a party, invite some friends. it kind of took off. >> reporter: she became the "bark day planner," bringing events to life that are just as fun for the pups as for their parents. >> the clients are definitely those people that just love their dogs. >> reporter: we tagged along as she hustled around downtown dallas, getting ready for boba's big birthday bash. our first stop, the bakery, a "paw-tisseire" specializing in cakes for canines. then we headed to the venue to set up. and party. >> hi, guys! they can have whatever they would like. the humans are on that side. >> you're so beautiful.

>> reporter: it was a smashing success. for both the pups and the people. but even as a devoted cat mom myself, i couldn't help but wonder how we got here. do you think this would have been possible five, ten years ago? >> honestly, we just hit five years in august. and from first year to now, it is definitely changed. it is like the new norm. >> pet-keeping goes back millennia, but never in the way that we are experiencing it right now. >> reporter: jessica pierce is a bio ethicist who has dedicated her career to thinking through human/animal relations. her 2016 book, "run, spot, run," sparked ongoing debate about the ethics of pet-keeping. >> i think that lavishing where it really is about fun for the dog, i wouldn't judge that any differently than buying a jet ski or whatever it is. >> reporter: a pet owner herself, she still grapples with pet parents spoiling their
