january 10th. great to be back with you all. >> stephanie. >> yes, we're going to start the check of our forecast with drew chilly this morning. >> and then later today showers make a return. so right now temperatures a lot colder than we were this time yesterday. more than ten degrees colder and a lot of cities. so we're beginning in the 30s if not the low 30s in some of our coldest valleys like danville. good morning. you're at 33 degrees. we're at 40 in sonoma. 38. right now. the current temperature in san jose, live doppler seven, along with satellite clear skies this morning will give way to showers this afternoon. you can see our next wave of energy now entering around eureka this morning. and it's moving in our direction. so today we have scattered showers. it's a level one where we could have some pockets of standing water and some minor low lying flooding during times of high tide. we have king tides today, that high tide coming around 10 a.m. so future weather getting you into the middle part of our day. the showers intensify and will be in and out of those showers throughout the afternoon and the evening. a close look at this

rain coming up in eight minutes. let's check in with gloria to your new track this morning. >> good morning so far. looking pretty good out there on the roads this morning. let's get a live look right now at the bay bridge toll plaza. and you can see it's pretty empty out there right now. metering lights are not on yet. and then a look at your drive times for this morning. so far, just the usual spot from tracy to dublin that will take you 31 minutes. >> thank you gloria. happening today, the community and law enforcement agencies from across the country will be honoring the life of oakland police officer twan lay. he was killed in the line of duty responding to a burglary call in oakland last month. the public memorial will be held for him this morning in castro valley. that's where abc seven news reporter lena howland is joining us live at three crosses church. lena >> well, just up the hill from me, hundreds of police officers, community members and family of officer tuan lay will be gathering later on this morning to honor his ultimate sacrifice. as this was the memorial for him set up inside of the oakland

federal building where he worked. security before joining the oakland police department. he was killed in the line of duty ten days ago, marking the department's first death since 2009. there was a brief police procession on monday in tribute, with a much longer one expected today from oakland to castro valley ahead of the memorial always made me feel respected as a community member. >> um, i didn't feel like because i lived in a high crime impacted neighborhood that he didn't understand me or he didn't. he didn't want to really make a change because things have been this way for so long. >> during the ceremony, we are expecting to hear from california attorney general rob bonta, oakland's interim police chief darren allison, as well as officer lee's cousin, uncle and brother in law, among others. this service is open to the public and it starts at 10:00 this morning. however, if you are attending, you're going to want to get here early because parking is expected to fill up. live in castro valley. lena

howland abc seven news. >> thank you, lena and again, the memorial will be held at three crosses church in castro valley. you can watch the entire ceremony on abc seven's 24 over seven streaming. our coverage starts at 10:00. the service is expected to last until about 1130. >> well, it's been one year since xiang tao officially became oakland's mayor. she's the first hmong american mayor of a major us city and oakland's youngest mayor in 75 years. tao has dealt with a lot during her first year, a little over one month into her terms, she fired police chief laurent armstrong over his handling of a misconduct investigation. the mayor's office says she is dedicated to making a dent in crime. the police force has grown by more than 30 officers, and the city continues to see an increase in robberies, burglaries and motor vehicle thefts from 2022 through the beginning of this year. over the weekend, opponents of the mayor officially launched a recall effort. now, supporters of mayor tao are pushing back against

that recall effort. a small group rallied outside of city hall to denounce this effort. they say they tell abc seven news reporter tim johns the mayor is being unfairly blamed for the city's issues. stop using or paying for political gain. >> dozens of oakland voters gathered on the steps of city hall tuesday to show their support for mayor sheng tao tao, who has led the city since last january, is currently facing the possibility of a recall election in the coming months, a prospect voters here say would be a waste of time as well as millions of taxpayer dollars. >> that money could be used for the housing crisis. that money could be used for violence prevention. that money could be used for affordable housing. >> as for the mayor herself, her chief of staff releasing a statement to abc seven news, that statement reads in part, i have faith that oaklanders are smarter than this and will resist the urge to be distracted by a desperate attempt for relevance. many people out here acknowledge that oakland has its share of problems right now. however, they believe that those problems are the fault of former

oakland mayor libby shaft and former opd chief laurent armstrong. that includes perhaps the city's most pressing problem of all crime. >> last past administration in this, uh- took away the foot patrols out of the business corridors. this administration has put back foot patrols in the business corridors. >> many people disagree with that stance, however, that includes former alameda county judge brenda harbin forte, who kicked off the recall effort over the weekend. >> this mayor has blood on her hands. she has blood on her hands, and she just has not done what she could do and what she should have done. >> but harbin forte says crime isn't the only reason she wants. tao recalled. she also points to the city having no police chief and missing the deadline for a multi-million dollar state grant to fight retail theft as other reasons. >> we have businesses who are leaving, you know, they're shutting down. we have businesses that are being robbed , sometimes two and three times in a short period of time. >> in oakland, tim johnson, abc

seven news new details this morning on the health of defense secretary lloyd austin. >> the pentagon says austin has prostate cancer, which led to a urinary tract infection and serious intestinal complications . gloria is at the live desk with more on his secretive hospitalization. gloria good morning, kumasi secretary austin was admitted on december 22nd and underwent a minimally invasive surgical procedure to treat and cure prostate cancer. >> the pentagon says that the next day, he was discharged and went home. but on new year's day , he was admitted again with complications from the procedure. determined to be a urinary tract infection. now, even though secretary austin was diagnosed with a cancer about a month ago, president biden only learned about it yesterday. >> nobody at the white house knew that secretary austin had prostate cancer until this morning, and the president was informed immediately after we were. >> the president or the white house instruct secretary austin to make this disclosure today.

we know does the president plan to stick with secretary austin through the rest of the time? yes. according to the doctors, the cancer was detected when austin had a regular screening in early december. >> they say his prognosis is excellent. the pentagon has apologized for not being more transparent about austin's hospitalization. they say he is still at the hospital and is very actively engaged with his senior staff and making important decisions about national security and defense. stephanie >> gloria, thank you. boeing's ceo is acknowledging his company's, quote, mistake in the wake of the alaska airlines mid-air mishap last friday, david calhoun told staff members that boeing is going to approach the investigation with complete transparency. his comments come four days after the door plug used to cover optional emergency exits on a boeing 737 max nine jet blew out at 16,000ft. amazingly no one was hurt. alaska airlines says inspections of its fleet have revealed loose

hardware visible on some of its max nine seconds. the ntsb has grounded hundreds of the jet's, mostly with alaska and united airlines, as the issue with the 737 max nine's comes as boeing reports its highest number of orders and deliveries in five years. the company says it received 369 orders last month, its highest monthly total ever. now, boeing also reported nearly 1500 gross plane orders for the year, one of its best years on record. it still leaves it far behind. rival airbus in both orders and deliveries, the issue still impacting air travel here in the bay area. this is a live picture now from sfo, where yesterday 57 flights were canceled, 53 of which involved alaska and united planes. now east bay congressman mark desaulnier is calling the alaska incident unacceptable and is urging congress to pass legislation. he introduced nearly two years ago. he issued

to keep its longstanding post street location open until 2025. luxury retailer chanel bought out the three story building for $63 million back in 2022. now williams-sonoma previously planned to vacate it as the lease was ending, but did not elaborate why plans changed antioch's mayor is ready to take action over the state of a once popular strip mall. >> the delta fair shopping center is falling into fallen into disrepair, disrepair builder are boarded up, as you can see in fenced off trash and broken glass for everywhere. mayor lamar thorpe says the city has taken steps in the past to get the property owner to act, but nothing has worked well. >> all we've utilized up to this point is code enforcement and some fines, but obviously we need to take greater legal action to ensure that we get these properties in a state that is, is, is fair to everybody. the property is owned by two family llc.

not only give cities the power, but also includes a provision that would allow for first responders to override the vehicle controls. there are numerous incidents in san francisco where autonomous vehicles came to stop, or even got in the way of crews responding to a call, according to the chronicle. during a three month period last year, there were 191,000 driverless taxi trips in san francisco. >> and it's not just robots, taxis, the future of artificial intelligence can clearly have positive impacts on our lives. the state is now turning to ai to try and fix traffic jams. >> ai is really opening up those possibilities of taking like millions of points of data that caltrans collects on a regular basis, and that's traffic volume data. that's traffic speed data, that's freight mobility data. and being able to analyze that very quickly, much quicker than our own engineers can do on a regular basis. >> caltrans can use it to

develop strategies in areas that get congested. it seems like a good idea to at least one driver. >> i think any time that you can get the human out of the equation, and i know that that's super controversial. uh i think it's going to be really helpful. um, because though we think we're really smart, i think an algorithm that only does this one thing will probably do it better. >> well, that's one perspective. caltrans says there is still a human element, and it is partnering with other state agencies to educate young drivers about safety. >> one of the immediate down sides of this shift to ai is the instant impact on jobs. yesterday, duolingo, a language learning app many people use every day, laid off around 10% of its workers. the app's existing features increasingly rely on ai and chatbots to create and to check content. duolingo says no full time employees are in this layoff, and it attempted to find alternative roles for those who are being let go. in today's gma

light scattered showers here locally, but it will be a significant storm in the sierra. let's time the rain out here locally. it's quiet this morning. we're not anticipating much in the way of rainfall for your morning commute. it's later on. closer to the lunchtime hour that will start to scattered showers. move in here, turning up the coverage and intensity later on this afternoon and this evening. so the evening commute we will be in and out of some scattered showers, but with this front it's fast moving. by about midnight we're done with the showers and rainfall totals will end up anywhere from about a few hundredths of an inch up to a half of an inch of rain, where you find some of those steadier showers moving through a bit slower. we're tracking that snow in the sierra. here's winter radar right now for the most part, the latest observations are just pretty cloudy around south lake tahoe, but we do have chain controls in effect on 8-80 50, 88 and 89 this morning. and this is just the start of what will be a messy day. conditions go downhill this afternoon and this evening as heavy snow moves in here, falling at 1 to 2in per hour. look at some of these

where we have a better chance of keeping the roadway open for commuters and for emergency responders. when it comes time to respond during rain events in the future, caltrans does suggest to allow yourself extra time to commute through the work area. >> the work is expected to wrap up tomorrow, so normal ferry service is expected to resume tomorrow. >> for san francisco bay ferry commuters versus been suspended on the south san francisco route for a few days now due to mechanical issues with the engines on three vessels. two of those have been repaired. the third is expected to be fixed today. once that third boat is fixed, normal service can resume. now a heads up if you are anywhere near the water because king tides are back in the bay area. you can see water just coming over the barrier onto the sidewalks along the embarcadero in san francisco. so the tides like this happened twice a year when the earth comes into alignment with the sun and moon, creating extremely high tides along the coast. >> interesting. yeah, it's you

across the city. oakland points to the south and will be in and out of these showers for the evening. so for the evening commute we will have some slick roadways, some showers moving through and then by about 9:00 pm we're seeing the tail end of the system sink to the south, clearing skies in the north bay. so we'll take a look at rainfall totals. could see up to a half of an inch in some spots. if we see a localized downpour, it's really the second half of your day this afternoon we find that wet weather we are still tracking a winter storm warning in effect until 1 a.m. tomorrow. those snow totals keep going up. we could see excess of two feet of snow, with the heaviest coming this afternoon. this evening. look at some of these totals. future tracker snow showing you kirkwood 32in donner above 30in. so we're going to see a lot of snow out of this system. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. the next seven days. if you take the umbrella for you this afternoon though scattered showers. we have frosted advisories in effect tomorrow morning. it is a chilly morning, but a sunny day. we'll have clouds build back in friday. some showers for saturday, but then we dry out on sunday. looking nice for the

seven news reporter lena howland is live. this morning. lena stephanie. good morning. today is going to be a really somber day as the oakland police department and the community are coming together to honor the life of officer lei. >> after he paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, he was killed in the line of duty ten days ago, marking the department's first death since 2009. there was a brief police procession on monday in tribute, with a much longer one expected today from oakland to castro valley ahead of the memorial, which is just one of many ways officer lei is being remembered the final time last week, a buddhist vigil was held in his honor in oakland's pacific renaissance plaza. oakland police say lei was born in saigon, vietnam, before later moving to oakland and being naturalized on september 11th, 2001. he was a four year veteran

at 10:00 this morning and the service is expected to last until about 1130. vallejo will reportedly pay $5 million to the family of a man who was shot and killed by police in february of 2019. >> willie mccoy was found sitting in a car at a taco bell drive thru. he was unresponsive and allegedly had a gun in his lap. officer was moved in and within a matter of seconds fired 55 rounds at mccoy's vehicle. an investigation by a special prosecutor determined the officers felt threatened and acted in self-defense. mccoy's family sued the city. the vallejo sun says this is one of the largest settlements in the city's history. san jose police chief anthony mata will soon be leaving the department for a new job. he will now be leading the investigations bureau for the santa clara county da's office. he's been with the police department for 28 years. the
