overnight a deadly storm pounding the east coast. more than half a million customers without power. >> power's out. >> reporter: as fierce winds, heavy rainfall and flash floods slam the region. floodwaters sweeping onto the streets of baltimore, maryland, and overthrowing jones falls river, rushing on to the road. new york city drenched. rain water pouring through the ceiling of this subway station. the severe weather also crippling travel across the country, forcing more than 1,000 u.s. flight cancellations tuesday, and ground stops at several major airports. at least five fatalities in the storm zone. falling trees killed two people near atlanta, georgia, including a 78-year-old man crushed while he was driving. one person dead and two critically injured at this mobile home park in clermont, north carolina. the state hammered by the storm. flood water engulfing this playground in greensboro. parts of winston salem submerged. >> wow. >> reporter: in south carolina, a twister wreaking havoc.

piles of bricks littering the streets. >> lot of people after the tornado hit, they looked up and saw trees and sky in their living rooms and bedrooms. >> reporter: this woman's roof is ruined. >> there's still a lot of damage. it's going to be a long cleanup. >> reporter: just some heartbreaking impacts from those tornados. as far as this river is concerned, you may remember it flooded a week before christmas in parts of new jersey. here we go again. the forecast is for major flood tomorrow night. the weather should be good here an for recovery efforts across the south. but there are more storms coming to the same places this friday. robin? >> got to say, rob, that is quite a scene behind you. thank you for your reporting. let's go to faith abubey. she's in panama city beach are more on the tornado damage there. good morning, faith. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. thousands of customers are waking up in the dark across florida this morning after the powerful storm system ripped through the area in this community.

there's extensive damage. homes ripped to shreds. roofs peeled back. windows blown away. take a look at this house. pow powerful winds knocked this house off its foundation. you can see that right there. that used to be the garage. it's disappeared. what's left of the structure is leaning onto the neighboring house. officials tell us across the area there were serious injuries reported but no deaths so far. crews are working quickly to restore power, as homeowners are cleaning up. governor ron desantis has declared a state of emergency to free up resources for the recovery. now, as for schools this morning, many of them will reopen for the first time since the storm. robin. >> destruction we are seeing there. thank you. going to bring in sam, who's in for ginger, with more on the extreme weather overnight, and the new cross country storm on the way? >> brand new, developing right now. i have never seen damage like that in panama city, from that tornado. just behind where she was standing, they get surveyed

today so we'll know the strength of that storm. but let's talk about getting this one out of the way. storm one on forecast. horrible results though. look at the rain still in the cape. pulling away. these are going to have wind gusts. up to 40, 50 miles per hour. even today into the afternoon. then flooding from deep south well into the mid-atlantic and into northeast as well from augusta maine, boston, new york city, pasaic. the pompton is kind of an off shoot of the pasaic. they're going to be in major flooding into the weekend. watch this storm exit the northwest. this is the new storm that we're talking about. it's a rapid mover. we've already got heavy snow moving into the great lakes and more rain by the time we get close to the weekend for new england. now, the highest tornado threat and normally i would say look in the zone in yellow. but everybody in yellow, to raleigh, we are going to have damaging winds developing here. this is where the tornados are likely, from montgomery, columbus, charleston. when that rain moves into the northeast, there's arctic air behind it. this time the rain in the

northeast is 1 to 2, george. >> thanks. race for the white house. with just five days to go until the iowa caucuses the first contest of the 2024 campaign. rachel scott is in des moines where there's one final debate before the voting. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning. in just a few hours nikki haley and ron desantis will go one on one. both still trying to prove they are the best alternative to former president trump. this will be one of their last chances to make their case before voting begins. this morning ron desantis and nikki haley preparing to face off in the final debate before the iowa caucuses. the former governor out in a snowy iowa. with the campaign trail largely to her south. >> i didn't know if we were going to see five people. but to see a full house really is great. >> this is funny. >> reporter: with the brutal weather, ramaswamy forged the campaign via an ipad. governor desantis was home in florida giving a state of the state address, and dealing with severe tornados there. hours later traveling back to iowa for a town hall. >> we're in it for the long haul with this.

but i think iowa rewards the intensive approach, where you're showing up in 99 counties. >> reporter: desantis is second place in iowa and haley isn't that far behind. she's already gaining momentum in new hampshire, a new poll showing her just seven points behind former president donald trump. >> the only way we're going to win the majority of americans is if we go forward with a new generational leader, that leaves the negativity and baggage in the past. >> reporter: some voters still torn. >> looking for an alternative to trump, but i want somebody who can beat joe biden and be a strong president. >> reporter: trump is still dominating in the polls now taking fire for saying he hopes the economy crashes this year on biden's watch. >> when there's a crash, i hope it's going to be the next 12 months because i don't want to be a herbert hoover. >> reporter: i asked desantis what he made of those comments? >> if the economy crashes, people would get thrown out of work. businesses would go under. i don't want to see that happening.

i want people to do well. >> reporter: not on the stage tonight, donald trump or chris christie. trump will be holding a separate town hall. christie not campaigning in the state at all. he's going all in on new hampshire, still vowing to stay in the race despite falling trailing nikki haley in that latest poll. >> thanks. donald trump was in court yesterday watching his lawyers take tough questions over trump's claim of immunity over charges he tried to overturn the 2020 election. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is tracking the case. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: george, good morning. it's easy to forget prosecutions of donald trump are historic in nature. no former president has ever been charged with crimes after leaving office. tuesday a critical hearing sought to address the question of whether a president has unlimited immunity while in office. a dramatic hearing before a three judge panel addressing a fundamental question. whether a president is immune from prosecution for any action taken while in office.

president pardons, resigns or is not impeached, not a crime. i think that is extraordinarily frightening future. >> reporter: as the three judge panel, two appointed by president biden and one by president george bush appeared receptive to the special counsel's claim that trump, in trying to block biden from being certified president, was not acting in an official capacity but on his own personal behalf as a candidate. but trump's attorneys maintain the prosecutions against him are being used as a political weapon. after the hearing trump raising the specter of violence by supporters should he lose his legal challenges. >> there will be bedlem in the country. it's a very bad thing. it's a very bad precedent. it's the opening of a pandora's box. >> reporter: trump continued to spew election lies about voter fraud and did not denounce or rule out the potential for violence, george. >> that was what was most remarkable about that questioning. thanks very much. robin? new details on the midair blowout on the alaska airlines flight. boeing's ceo is acknowledging

the company's mistake, as we hear new details from passengers on that jet. our transportation correspondent gio benitez joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: robin, good morning. we are here at boeing's headquarters in chicago. the company's ceo got emotional. as you said, took responsibility. this morning a stark admission from boeing's ceo after that door plug flew off of the alaska airline jet at 16,000 feet. >> we're going to approach this, number one, acknowledging our mistake. we are going to approach it with 100% and complete transparency every step of the way. >> reporter: the ceo dave calhoun emotional, as he addressed employees tuesday. >> this stuff matters. everything matters. every detail matters. >> reporter: boeing says it's working with the ntsb and faa to make sure this never happens again. the company revising its final inspection protocols to the faa

for those 171 grounded max 9 jets that have door plugs. the faa saying they will remain grounded for now, and that the safety of the flying public, not speed, will determine the timeline for returning the boeing 737 9 max to service. this as we learn stunning new details about what happened on that alaska airlines jet friday. >> i looked over. we literally thought we were going to die. >> reporter: this woman and her 12-year-old son were sitting in the row right behind the door plug when it flew off, taking josiah's phone and stuffed animal with it. >> we just heard a big boom. it was silent for just one second, and then we just feel and hear a lot of air going around, freezing cold air. >> reporter: and the mother of the 15-year-old who lost his shirt, telling the seattle times as the air cabin depressurized she saw her son's feet being pulled back towards the hole saying, quote, i reached over and grabbed his body and pulled him towards me over the arm rest.

i did not realize until after the flight that his clothing had been torn off of his upper body. she said it sounded like a bomb exploding. also on the plane, three babies that were sitting on laps, and four unaccompanied minors, the youngest of which was 5. meanwhile, in a federal class action lawsuit, a former employee of the company that builds the max 9 fuselage spirit aero systems said this. the company's products suffered from an excessive amount of defects. we reached out to the company, but they would not comment on pending litigation. michael? >> the whole thing just a scary ordeal. gio, thank you very much. now the crisis in ecuador. the country is descending into violence, including an attack on a tv station during a live broadcast. matt rivers has the story. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, michael. ecuador has been known as one of the safest countries in south america for years.

but over the last two years it has been rocked by drug related violence and this latest incident among the most dramatic we have seen. this morning authorities in ecuador investigating a brazen attack on a public television station by an apparent armed gang as acts of terrorism. the masked men seen here tying crew members on the floor, threatening staff, waving explosives and guns. scared staffers inside desperately pleading for their lives. the live broadcast rolling for almost 15 minutes before going dark. police then surrounding the area, arresting more than a dozen gun men. the show's deputy director later saying the attack was, quote, extremely violent. this incident one of many acts of violence that occurred after ecuador declared a state of emergency monday following the disappearance of the leader of the notorious gang from his cell in a prison.

and this morning multiple u.s. airlines, including american airlines, canceling their flights there as a result of the unrest. george? >> okay, matt. thanks. now a new study finding bottled water could contain up to 100 times more plastic particles than previously estimated. rhiannon ally with the story. good morning. >> good morning to you, george. yeah, if you vowed to drink more water in the new year, you are not alone. you may be shocked to learn water isn't the only thing you're swallowing when you drink from a bottle of water. a new study says they may contain up to 100 times more microscopic plastic particles than previously thought. this new study, it was published in the national academy of sciences. researchers found an average of 240,000 nano plastics per bottle. to put it in perspective, they are tiny, measuring less than one micrometer. scientists have also found them in tap water but just in smaller amounts. in a statement an industry trade association was critical of this new research saying the study lacks standardized methods.

you are also talking to judge salas, who i know you had a conversation with a few years ago. >> i have gotten to know her over the years. judge esther salas. we're going to talk to her live in just a minute. but first the latest on the attack on the las vegas judge. the man appeared in court tuesday, now charged with attempted murder. we're hearing now from the law clerk who rushed to save the judge from her attacker. kayna whitworth joins us with the story. good morning. >> robin, good morning. he's being called a hero. michael lasso told me he's known the judge most of his life. he calls it an honor to work with her, and says people from around the world are sending letters of support in the aftermath. this morning he's being hailed a hero. >> whoa whoa whoa! >> reporter: 27-year-old law clerk michael lasso credited with saving a las vegas judge from a vicious courtroom attack, is speaking out for the first time. >> it's something you don't usually see in court. you see some crazy things. nothing like this. >> reporter: lasso, seen in the now viral video, pulling the 6',

190 pound defendant off the judge as authorities say he was punching her, hitting her with an unknown object and pulling out her hair. >> i just thought when he first hopped over that desk he was going for the door. when he didn't go for the door and instead starts charging at the judge, i was just in shock. i just reacted. >> reporter: lasso quickly springing into action last week. >> i don't even want to think about what would have happened if i wasn't there. once the situation was handled, i immediately went over to her to check on her to make sure she was okay. >> reporter: the judge describing the defendant as big, strong and angry in the arrest report. what did that judicial bench look like in the after math? >> it was a bloody scene. there was just blood everywhere. >> reporter: injured, but recovering, the judge returning to the courtroom face to face with her attacker. but this time the defendant surrounded by officers seen

shackled, wearing a spit mask and protective mitt, sentenced up to four years in prison for his original case. >> are you mr. redden? >> reporter: tuesday, the 30-year-old, whose family says has a history of mental illness, stood in front of a different judge answering to attempted murder, battery and extortion charges among others. >> you understand these charges? >> yes, i understand them. >> now officials in las vegas are looking at the possibility of adding more security personnel. the judge had a single court marshal with her, and he needed 25 stitches in his head after that attack. just a terrifying situation. >> it really is. hard to describe. thank you. u.s. district court judge esther salas knows about the threat to judges. her beloved son daniel was murdered at their home by a gun man who was targeting her. judge salas joins us exclusively this morning. always a pleasure to be in your presence. >> same here. >> our audience really responds to what you say.

and you want to honor daniel. you've been doing it by fighting for the protection of judges and their families. what goes through your mind when you see that attack in las vegas? >> i gotta tell you when i saw it first, my heart started racing. i just immediately thought about the judge and the people around her. and what she must be feeling. immediately, my mission, my goal, our goal at the administrative office at the courts as well is to ensure that all judges are safe. robin, there are 30,000 state and local judges that need protecting. this is an example. >> it seems like we are seeing it more and more. the judge in one of donald trump's cases alleged swatting attack. then you had another judge who was killed by a man, a judge, who was overseeing, presiding over his divorce case. even supreme court justices are being threatened. >> judge wilkinson died outside

his home in october of last year. we've had judge romer, in june of 2022, a retired judge. a defendant he sentenced years earlier came back to even the score here. judges are being singled out and attacked, and we need to protect judges. our attorney general just said last week we have seen a spike in now attacks against the judiciary. an alarming spike. so what do we have to do? it's speeding up, right? it's not slowing down. so we have to speed up protection. >> you have been doing that. last time we spoke you were trying to make daniel's law a federal case. going before congress. >> it passed. >> it passed. >> talk more about daniel's law and what more can be done. >> the daniel act is great. it's a solid step in the right direction. but it protects federal judges. we need to focus on all judges at every level, state, local judges.

there are over 30,000 of them. there's so many states and u.s. territories that don't have any laws protecting judicial officers. we need to change that. state by state we need to approach it. maryland is the start. wisconsin, where judge romer was. we need to pass laws in these states to protect all judges. our democracy counts on judicial officers feeling safe to do our jobs. we need to be free of fear of retribution, retaliation or death. and that is not a hyperbolie. i know it first hand. >> you know it first hand. what you went through. it's been three years since your beloved son daniel. your husband mark was seriously injured. how are you both doing now? >> thanks be to god and our faith and our love from so many people like you, we are strong. but we know work remains to be done so we're not going to stop. we're not going to stop talking about daniel. we're not going to stop showing his face. we're not going to stop talking

hospitalization. the defense secretary was being treated for prostate cancer and developed complication. we are told he is expected to make a full recovery and his cancer prognosis is excellent. this still is a shocking and stunning lack of communication and lack of transparency. lloyd austin's been in the hospital now for over a week, something the white house didn't know about for days and we now know had to urge the pentagon to make public. even after the president and lloyd austin spoke on the phone saturday, biden still didn't know the root cause of all of this. president biden learning yesterday that austin has prostate cancer, something he was diagnosed with a month ago. the pentagon didn't say why austin was forthcoming calling the situation intently personal for austin. prostate cancer is deeply sensitive for so many. prevalent among black men of this age. still the community is now launching a formal inquiry into why he wasn't more forth coming with his diagnosis.

the white house launched a top to bottom view of the notification protocol for cabinet secretaries. we are told the president still has full confidence in his defense secretary. >> mary, thank you very much. now to meta taking steps to protect teens from potentially harmful content on facebook and instagram. whit johnson is here with everything parents need to know about the new protections. good morning, whit. >> robin, good morning. these new protections follow dozens of lawsuits accusing meta of designing features harmful to children. the social media giant will begin hiding inappropriate content from teens on facebook and instagram. this will roll out over the coming months. few new existing users under the age of 18 will automatically be placed in the most restrictive content control setting, making it more difficult for teens to search for or come across accounts that post sensitive content. this includes search terms like suicide, self-harm and eating disorders.

for blood donations after the american red cross announces experienced an emergency blood shortage. >> our hospitals are asking for blood at a faster rate than we can replenish it with donations. over the holidays, we saw a decrease in donations, but we saw an increase in need for blood. >> this as the number of people donating blood has dropped by more than 40% over the last 20 years. the covid-19 pandemic alone causing that figure to fall by more than 300,000. >> a lot of people were used to donating blood at school or at business related blood drives. >> the need greater than ever, as every two seconds someone in america needs a blood transfusion. >> the shortage is the worst for platelets and red blood cells from people who are type o positive or o negative. >> 74-year-old debbie is one of those highly sought after donor, with a universal o negative blood type. she's donated blood 172 times

>> reporter: after a mammogram and multiple biopsy, the actress tells "people" magazine she was eventually diagnosed in december with invasive carcinoma, a rare type of invasive cancer that accounts for just .3% to 6% of all breast cancer diagnosis. >> this isn't likely to be one that is extremely aggressive or grows very rapidly. it is associated with a high chance of cure and less of a chance of it occurring outside of the breast with appropriate treatment. >> reporter: eggert saying i have panics where i'm just like, get this out of me, telling people the next step is surgery. you sit there and it's in you and you're like every second that passes and it's inside of me, it's growing. the 51-year-old says her first symptoms were a rapid 25-pound weight gain over three months and terrible pain in her breast which she initially attributed to menopause. >> if there's a persistent change in the breast, as she was

explaining she had swelling and pain in the breast that was not going away. that should prompt a woman to go seek out the medical attention of her doctors in order to get a workup as soon as possible. >> reporter: the single mom of two says she's fighting to be there for her daughters 25-year-old dylan and especially her youngest, 12-year-old keegan. >> there's no being depressed. there's no laying around. it's like, enjoy right now today, be positive. >> nicole says after she found that lump it took her a month to get an appointment for a mammogram. a good reminder for us all not to wait if something doesn't feel right, and to take that appointment, even when it doesn't happen right away. guys. >> a month? that's way too long. thank you, eva. what do you have? >> we're talking about one storm exiting and another storm coming in. this will be a fast mover across the country. heads up because we've already got some damage we're cleaning up today from the first storm.

this is down in florida, the florida panhandle. we had a tornado moving through there. they're getting surveyed today so we'll know the strength. this looks like damage. look how much was torn up. this was a tornado. heavy snow moves out of the rockies. fast break in the middle of the country. more snow for the northern rockies, more storms for the deep south. normally i say within the yellow zone, but i say everywhere in the yellow zone will have damaging wind. the likelihood for tornados is in the bright orange area. this flooding will be a real issue. we are going to crest later today into the weekend. we've got another rain maker, 1 to 2 inch, coming just before the weekend. that's the weather around the nation. and that shot of arctic air next week. here's what you can expect.

are all about making our smart homes even smarter like this samsung refrigerator that uses ai to take stock of your groceries. >> there's a camera inside the refrigerator. >> it's right here. we're going to put this -- hear that ding there? >> reporter: you put it in the fridge. >> the ai recognizes that ingredient was added back in. so we can actually go into this feature and see the actual ingredients in your fridge. i can now ask ai for a recipe based off on what i have. >> reporter: you got tomato, broccoli, green peppers. put it altogether. here's something to make. >> make a fantastic dish. >> reporter: companies are trying to simplify household chores. automatic. no human required. >> no human required. >> reporter: you program your yard and it will do it for you? >> yes. >> reporter: and when it comes to tv's, the thinner and wider the better. like this sleek monitor.

congress woman shirley chisholm in a new biopic that will air on netflix. here's a look at the teaser trailer. >> i am the candidate of the people of america! >> i just got chills. >> yeah. >> yes. the film is called shirley. it will tell the story of chisholm elected as a representative for new york city where she served for 15 years. it will also follow her trail blazing run for president of the united states back in 1972. the film is long overdue written and directed by john ridley who gave us "12 years a slave." regina and her sister are also on board to produce. shirley streams on netflix march 22nd. so happy she's back at it. also in movie news, tom cruise just signed on the dotted line and is officially partnering with warner brothers in a huge

deal to develop, produce and star in a brand new original movies for the studio. the super star largely credited with bringing audiences back to theaters with top gun maverick. i would agree with that. after covid, not a lot of people going to the theater. he has a long history of warner brothers dating back to 1994 in interview with a vampire and "eyes wide shut." that was good. i need to see that again. the co-ceo's of warner brothers calling cruise an absolute legend in the film industry and stating we couldn't be more excited to welcome tom back to warner brothers and bringing more of his genius to life on the screen in the years to come. tom also posted on instagram sharing his excitement. congratulations. that's great news. also a gma exclusive from our friends at mattel. this is exciting. the big reveal, sam, of barbie's 2024 career of the year.

we are out here in petersburg. >> to the nation's bustling capital. >> pretty cool. >> the frigid temps and treacherous conditions forcing them to pivot halfway. >> when we first started, we didn't have the car. we got it midway through the journey. i was like, okay, we maybe need to get the car or whatever town we go to the morning of the walk. just go find a place to park. we would walk a certain amount of miles. we both walked 300 miles. together it's 600 miles. >> reaching the city of brotherly love, a big feat for the brothers, who were first featured on gma last year. $10,000. the men dedicating their lives to giving back to foster care children in every state. >> we had little to no money. it was a blessing. we were able to do some give aways. great shoes. we were able to go all out.

our goal is to grow our platform to allow these kids to speak up and help us open up a transition home for kids to get them out of foster care. >> they are taking it step by step and encouraging those they meet along the way to spread their message in their own town. >> we've been walking around the country for two years. at the end of the day we do it for the kids. bigger the sacrifice, the bigger the reward. >> foster kids matter! >> during their walk they got to meet the department of social services in richmond, virginia. they said the folks there showed them so much love. speaking of love, when they were done with their 31 day trek their home town of sumter, south carolina, gave them a big old welcome home at the local ymca. so far the brothers have walked in 25 states. they are halfway to their goal. >> i am so glad that you followed up with them. what an impact they've made on all of us. >> when we met them, we said there's no way we cannot follow up and see what they're doing.

it's also really important to establish why you're doing it. make it matter in order to make it happen. there's a phenomenon or tactic called habit stacking. if we layer the new routine under something we're doing. for example, if you want to drink more water, put your water bottle next to the coffee machine. every day can be january 1st. every day is a new page to the story we're writing. it's crucially important that we analyze the road blocks. i love a morning workout. i have even slept in my workout clothes to get a run in in the morning. >> i am committed. >> there are ways to continue with the hustle, let's just say that. >> i'm committed. maybe you should be committed. [ laughter ] i'm committed. that's a lot. >> i'll say it's dedication. >> that's dedication. you reached out to your viewers, your fans. you asked them about quitting day. we have a question. let's check it out.

>> why do you think people choose to quit during this particular time frame? do you think it's due to lack of results or do you think they lose the desire to change? >> that's a great question. people overestimate what they can do in a few weeks and underestimate what they can do in the long term, a year or more. that's part of it. there's also a cognitive bias called hyperbolic discounting. that means we're focusing on short term gains rather than long term rewards. the tactics i just mentioned are ways to kind of combat that. remember, we're playing the long game. little by little will amount to a whole lot. >> when it comes to working out i always think, i didn't get like this in a week. i'm not going to get where i want in a week either. you have to have a long game. >> absolutely. >> we have another question. erin. this is about parenting. >> okay. >> hi, robin. how do you maintain momming while trying to maintain your new goals?

>> momming is real. care giving is real. i will say share your goal with your loved ones, including your kids. let them know, mommy's taking time to go for a walk, go for a run, hop on peloton because i will be better able to serve you. use your no to protect your yes. we don't have to say yes to anything. our energy is currency so let's use it wisely in this new year. >> that is some great advice. kids will walk in, mommy, shouldn't you be going on a run? >> my daughter asks me all the time, mommy, are you going to work hard today? i have got to stay accountable. >> robin, always great to have you. great advice, by the way. make sure you follow that. do not quit! they call it quitters day, but you don't have to be part of that. coming up, third eye blind. they are here performing live. we'll be right back with more gma. there you go. with my "gm
