air has moved in. a frost advisory is in effect for the north bay. the inland east bay, the south bay and the santa cruz mountains through 10 a.m. this morning. because temperatures right now are quite cold in a lot of areas. good morning fremont. we're down to 3733. in danville, 36 in santa rosa, ukiah. you're at the freezing mark this morning. san francisco right now, a bit warmer relative speaking at 45 degrees. so here's how the day shapes up. expect a lot of sunshine today. you don't need the rain gear today. partly cloudy this afternoon and temperatures a bit below average in the 50s, but rain does return over the weekend. gloria, we'll talk about that in eight minutes. >> sounds good. thank you. drew this morning the slopes will be open at palisades tahoe ski resort, just a day after an avalanche killed one person. the accident launching a big search for survivors. palisades tahoe is just off of highway 89 on the northwest side of lake tahoe. the ski run where this happened is known as ct 22, and this trail map right here gives you a better look. the ct 22 express

trail includes a grouping of black diamond runs, and it's at the top of that area called the gs gully, where the avalanche happened. we're learning about the 66 year old man with bay area ties who was killed by the on rush of snow. three others were hospitalized and then released. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in the studio this morning with more on what we know. >> gloria community, community members at palisades tahoe are still very much shaken up after yesterday's tragedy on the slopes, and some questioning why it was even open given the conditions. the placer county sheriff's office identified the victim killed in yesterday's avalanche as 66 year old kenneth kidd. he is a resident of both pointrillionaise and the truckee area. it's unclear how experienced of a skier or snowboarder he was. this avalanche prompted the resort to close 30 minutes after it opened . meanwhile, search crews combed the area to see if anyone was injured or trapped. we spoke with one man that was already

heading down the mountain just after the avalanche happened, he says. he and his friend were among several people helping to look for those who had been swallowed or knocked elsewhere by the snow. >> so as we were riding down under the chairlift, some some people on the lift started yelling at us that there was an avalanche. we came across a man, um, who had lost his wife in the avalanche. so i unstrapped my snowboard and uh, asked where he had last seen her. >> daetz tahoe shut down for the rest of the day. right around 11:00 in the morning. it is expected to partially reopen today, but they say to expect significant delays. the sierra avalanche center has what they are calling a considerable avalanche risk in that same exact area today, with even more snowfall overnight, keeping crews on high alert. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. thank you lena. >> we're also hearing from a woman who was buried in that avalanche and snuck in, stuck in the snow, she tells reporter

my face, burying the snow. and luckily i have the face mask, so i have some air in the face mask in that moment, she knew she could only be still. >> so i tell myself to calm down. >> don't panic. i think because if i panic, i use more air stuck in the snow. >> she heard a voice from above. another skier at her rescue say, no worry, i got you. >> i think that's the best thing i ever heard in my life. i feel like janet snapped with the man who saved her life, processing it all in real time, i survived, i can walk, it's okay. i can walk down. >> the couple walked down the mountain with no injuries, realizing then and now how lucky they are to be alive. >> the risk is inherent. we all knows we just need to respect the mountain, respect the risks that associated with that. >> this couple holding each other closer. >> you realize time and life is

how treasure it is. >> a close call with an unstoppable force of nature that couldn't sweep away both love and devotion between husband and wife, and even the kindness of a stranger for well, although rare, avalanche can hit at a moment's notice, and the sierra has seen its share. >> the last major one at palisades tahoe happened in march of 2018. a wall of snow buried five people, including a bay area couple, near the olympic lady chairlift. thankfully, everyone survived that. but the last deadly avalanche happened at the alpine meadows resort in january of 2021. skiers was killed, another seriously hurt. the deadliest avalanche in state history also took place at alpine on march 31st in 1982, seven people were killed when snow buried dozens of skiers and staff. now, most avalanche deaths happen in the

airlines flight. so if you're planning to fly today, definitely check in on that. a new project that begins at sfo next week is expected to make runways safer, but will cause delays for travelers. runway 28 left is scheduled to close on tuesday so that crews can realign two taxiways and make them separate non-intersecting taxiways. the five month closure of runway 28 left is scheduled to begin on tuesday and last until july 1st. sfo says nearly one third of flights may experience delays. of about to 60 minutes until april. today's bart's board is expected to announce which stations are going to get these new fare gates right now, they're only at the west oakland station, but eight other stations are getting them next. >> bart hasn't decided on a final door material for the gates. abc seven news reporter liam melendez put them to the test and found they did prevent people from skipping out on their fare. i can speak

the city of los altos didn't give a reason or a timeline for the delay. taking down the parts at risk of collapse means fire investigators can finally get inside to figure out what started that fire. it also means part of el camino real near san antonio road will be able to reopen. that's expected to happen after the demolition work is complete. all streets surrounding berkeley's people's park are open again, though streets had to be shut down last week as a barrier of shipping containers was installed around the park to keep unhoused people out. uc berkeley plans to build new student housing in that area, but that plan has led to protests, construction is on hold pending legal issues, but the university says 24 hour security will patrol that area until the housing complex is complete. >> state senator dave cortez says he's on a mission to make robo taxis safer, and he's introduced a bill that would put decisions for these cars in the hands of local lawmakers, not state lawmakers. abc seven news

have bright skies today. dry conditions. here's a live look at sfo this morning. the day planner. it's quite lovely. first thing though this morning it is frosty frost advisories are in effect until 10 a.m. this morning. it's a bright afternoon. temperatures though a bit below average in the 50s. rain is back in the forecast here on saturday. we've upgraded the storm to a level two. a moderate storm because the rain will be heavy at times and we're watching the north bay, especially where we could have the possibility of some isolated flooding here saturday morning. the rain begins pretty late in nature, but as you go throughout the morning, there you can see future weather showing several hours of heavy rain around sonoma county. napa county points to the north and then this front begins to move south and then that heavy rain begins to move into san francisco. so oakland approaches the south bay as the evening wears on, and these rainfall totals will be a lot higher than what we just saw yesterday. again, the north bay, we're watching very closely a lot of areas exceeding not only an inch of rain, but some areas could get close to three inches of rain. of course, if the storm

passing under the american flag, over 500 uniformed oakland police officers lined up to greet officer tuan lay for his memorial service at three crosses church in castro valley. >> your hurt is our hurt. your grief is our grief. every member of the oakland police department feels the pain of your loss, and i, along with the entire department, stand before you completely brokenhearted. >> interim police chief darren allison called officer lay a hero. an officer who brought compassion to policing. lay, who was 36 years old, was working undercover when he was fatally shot while responding to a burglary at a cannabis business on december 29th. he had a true, true heart for service. >> his desire to better the lives of others was ingrained in his identity. it was just simply who he was as a person.

>> lay was a vietnamese refugee who came to the bay area when he was seven years old. lay grew up in oakland, graduated from oakland high in 2006. >> like he was so oakland to look at the pictures, even from his engagement, like wherever they were on that time that he proposed, he was still representing oakland. he had an oakland hat on. and just to see his joy, joy, um. gave a measure of calm in the midst of just the weightiness of just grieving the family also spoke at the memorial. >> his brother in law called officer lay a super hero. interim police chief allison told lays mother that she should be proud of her son. >> thank you for all the times you covered us and supported us. your brothers and sisters and law enforcement. thank you for all the times you answered the call. i know this was not how it was supposed to end, but you can rest easy. you have given us hope. you've given us love. you've held the line. you are a
