on top of me and i was burying my face, burying the snow. we are hearing from a woman who was buried in that avalanche. >> her story about feeling trapped and how she was eventually rescued by another skier. >> terrifying and as if grounded, boeing planes were not enough to deal with at sfo. an upcoming runway closure will be the cause of several flight delays in and out of the airport for the next several months. >> more bart stations upgraded the announcement, expected later today. okay, so good morning everybody. it is thursday, january 11th. we're going to kick things off with a check of our forecast. andrew. yeah good morning. >> so we have a cold start today. it's a lot of sunshine on the way for your thursday live look from the exploratorium camera. we are dry this morning. we have clear skies live doppler seven. any showers we had yesterday. they are out of here. we picked up about a half of an inch of rain in spots yesterday. behind this front. we have cleared out our skies, but cold

air has moved in. a frost advisory is in effect for the north bay. the inland east bay, the south bay and the santa cruz mountains through 10 a.m. this morning. because temperatures right now are quite cold in a lot of areas. good morning fremont. we're down to 3733. in danville, 36 in santa rosa, ukiah. you're at the freezing mark this morning. san francisco right now, a bit warmer relative speaking at 45 degrees. so here's how the day shapes up. expect a lot of sunshine today. you don't need the rain gear today. partly cloudy this afternoon and temperatures a bit below average in the 50s, but rain does return over the weekend. gloria, we'll talk about that in eight minutes. >> sounds good. thank you. drew this morning the slopes will be open at palisades tahoe ski resort, just a day after an avalanche killed one person. the accident launching a big search for survivors. palisades tahoe is just off of highway 89 on the northwest side of lake tahoe. the ski run where this happened is known as ct 22, and this trail map right here gives you a better look. the ct 22 express

trail includes a grouping of black diamond runs, and it's at the top of that area called the gs gully, where the avalanche happened. we're learning about the 66 year old man with bay area ties who was killed by the on rush of snow. three others were hospitalized and then released. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in the studio this morning with more on what we know. >> gloria community, community members at palisades tahoe are still very much shaken up after yesterday's tragedy on the slopes, and some questioning why it was even open given the conditions. the placer county sheriff's office identified the victim killed in yesterday's avalanche as 66 year old kenneth kidd. he is a resident of both pointrillionaise and the truckee area. it's unclear how experienced of a skier or snowboarder he was. this avalanche prompted the resort to close 30 minutes after it opened . meanwhile, search crews combed the area to see if anyone was injured or trapped. we spoke with one man that was already

heading down the mountain just after the avalanche happened, he says. he and his friend were among several people helping to look for those who had been swallowed or knocked elsewhere by the snow. >> so as we were riding down under the chairlift, some some people on the lift started yelling at us that there was an avalanche. we came across a man, um, who had lost his wife in the avalanche. so i unstrapped my snowboard and uh, asked where he had last seen her. >> daetz tahoe shut down for the rest of the day. right around 11:00 in the morning. it is expected to partially reopen today, but they say to expect significant delays. the sierra avalanche center has what they are calling a considerable avalanche risk in that same exact area today, with even more snowfall overnight, keeping crews on high alert. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. thank you lena. >> we're also hearing from a woman who was buried in that avalanche and snuck in, stuck in the snow, she tells reporter

ashley sharp. she is alive today because of a stranger. >> the avalanche happened behind me. >> joseph lu captured this video. moments after a deadly avalanche rushed through palisades, ct 22 run. his wife janet was nowhere to be found and i don't see her. >> i yelling and yelling. and when i realize what may happen, it really, really struck me. so i was using my ski pole, frantically, punch every where and yelling her name. >> it was just seconds before that. janet was right behind him when she says she felt the ground slip away. >> the snow is already kind of move. my feet can. i took me away and swept me off the mountain. >> caught in the avalanche. she fell about 200ft down the mountain and was buried. janet remembers. >> i couldn't put myself up because the snow was so heavy on on top of me, and i was burying

my face, burying the snow. and luckily i have the face mask, so i have some air in the face mask in that moment, she knew she could only be still. >> so i tell myself to calm down. >> don't panic. i think because if i panic, i use more air stuck in the snow. >> she heard a voice from above. another skier at her rescue say, no worry, i got you. >> i think that's the best thing i ever heard in my life. i feel like janet snapped with the man who saved her life, processing it all in real time, i survived, i can walk, it's okay. i can walk down. >> the couple walked down the mountain with no injuries, realizing then and now how lucky they are to be alive. >> the risk is inherent. we all knows we just need to respect the mountain, respect the risks that associated with that. >> this couple holding each other closer. >> you realize time and life is

how treasure it is. >> a close call with an unstoppable force of nature that couldn't sweep away both love and devotion between husband and wife, and even the kindness of a stranger for well, although rare, avalanche can hit at a moment's notice, and the sierra has seen its share. >> the last major one at palisades tahoe happened in march of 2018. a wall of snow buried five people, including a bay area couple, near the olympic lady chairlift. thankfully, everyone survived that. but the last deadly avalanche happened at the alpine meadows resort in january of 2021. skiers was killed, another seriously hurt. the deadliest avalanche in state history also took place at alpine on march 31st in 1982, seven people were killed when snow buried dozens of skiers and staff. now, most avalanche deaths happen in the

backcountry, according to the website ski california, 5% of all avalanche fatality in the u.s. since 2010 have involved guests skiing or snowboarding. inbounds. our team has been on top of these updates as new information comes in, you can get the same breaking news and custom weather alerts like this one through the abc seven news bay area app. just make sure you turn on your notifications this morning. >> it's unclear when the boeing 737 max nine airplanes will be cleared to fly again after a piece of one of those aircrafts flew off mid-flight. alaska airlines has canceled all max night flights through saturday, as they wait for instructions on how to inspect the fleet. united canceled over 150 flights yesterday. we are already seeing more today. right now we're getting a live look at sfo and there are 50 canceled flights today, 45 of them are united or alaska airlines flights. san jose airport has seven canceled alaska airlines flights. oakland airport has one canceled. alaska

airlines flight. so if you're planning to fly today, definitely check in on that. a new project that begins at sfo next week is expected to make runways safer, but will cause delays for travelers. runway 28 left is scheduled to close on tuesday so that crews can realign two taxiways and make them separate non-intersecting taxiways. the five month closure of runway 28 left is scheduled to begin on tuesday and last until july 1st. sfo says nearly one third of flights may experience delays. of about to 60 minutes until april. today's bart's board is expected to announce which stations are going to get these new fare gates right now, they're only at the west oakland station, but eight other stations are getting them next. >> bart hasn't decided on a final door material for the gates. abc seven news reporter liam melendez put them to the test and found they did prevent people from skipping out on their fare. i can speak

anecdotally, and from what i've heard from the station agents, they say it's been a complete game changer. >> we did see people coming down the stairs and then going right back up to go, probably to a different station. we expected that, but i mean, from our writers, they're telling us they like it. this is something that they've been asking for. they want people to pay their fair share. >> this project calls for all bart stations to have new fare gates by the end of 2025. this week is planned closure of interstate 680 in pleasanton has been canceled because of rain. >> caltrans needs to repair deteriorating pavement on the highway. the closure will be rescheduled for sometime next month. and of course, we'll keep you updated on that. drew. how's it looking out there this morning? weather wise? >> it's looking gorgeous, gloria . we have a lot of sunshine on the way for your day today, but we are starting out with some really chilly temperatures. here's a live look at our abc seven oakland airport camera where all is quiet. it's a little breezy along the coast, but the bigger story this morning are the cold

temperatures as you move away from the coast down to 35. in concord, 37 in livermore. good morning, hayward, we're at 42 degrees. frost advisories are in effect this morning until 10 a.m. that does include the north bay, so you may find some frost on your car windshield this morning. even on your plants are down to 34 in clear lake, 32 in ukiah, 38 in sonoma, napa, 37 calistoga, one of the coldest spots on our map right now at 29 degrees. take the sunglasses with you. you can leave the umbrella at home today. it's a lot of sunshine early on. bright and brisk by midday, heading to the afternoon, we'll find some clouds moving in. we'll call it partly cloudy to finish out the day, but all in all, it's shaping up to be a really nice afternoon. we do have some changes coming as we head into the weekend, but today we'll find that sunshine temperatures a little bit below average in the 50s. here's the three day forecast. we're dry and bright today. we cloud up tomorrow and then we turn wet and breezy on saturday is a level two on saturday and we'll have rain here and more snow in the

the city of los altos didn't give a reason or a timeline for the delay. taking down the parts at risk of collapse means fire investigators can finally get inside to figure out what started that fire. it also means part of el camino real near san antonio road will be able to reopen. that's expected to happen after the demolition work is complete. all streets surrounding berkeley's people's park are open again, though streets had to be shut down last week as a barrier of shipping containers was installed around the park to keep unhoused people out. uc berkeley plans to build new student housing in that area, but that plan has led to protests, construction is on hold pending legal issues, but the university says 24 hour security will patrol that area until the housing complex is complete. >> state senator dave cortez says he's on a mission to make robo taxis safer, and he's introduced a bill that would put decisions for these cars in the hands of local lawmakers, not state lawmakers. abc seven news

south bay reporter dustin dorsey has the details. >> the future of artificial intelligence is out there. even driving right past you on the streets. the new wave of technology is something that many leaders like state senator dave cortez wants to embrace. but when it comes to autonomous vehicles, he wants to pump the brakes on the current regulations or lack thereof. >> we've never really had a system, um, in this country where, you know, i mean, from from the henry ford days where you just go out and experiment on the streets, you know, without traffic laws in place and without, uh, the kind of requirements that keep it safe for everyone. >> after seeing issues involving safety of these avs in places like san francisco and los angeles, senator cortez introduced senate bill 915 to steer driverless car safety into the hands of local government, who currently have no influence. cortez says once the cpuc and dmv permits the cars to be on the roads, there are not enough accountability measures as piloted vehicles, he believes, putting local governments in

charge of closing this loophole is best for safety. >> the city councils and county boards of supervisors meet every week. uh, they can craft an ordinance. they can come back and tweak that. a month later. they're much more nimble than the state of california, ai experts agree regulation is needed, but some, like uc berkeley professor scott morris, says sb 915 isn't exactly how he would like it done. >> he thinks a top down approach from the state is better then it's standardized and uniform at the broadest scale possible, which can ensure best practices everywhere and it's going to be very difficult for av companies. >> if basically every community that they're working with, um, has a different form of regulation, san jose state professor omid bonoff says it may be a challenge, but it's still doable. >> and he adds, these companies better be ready for continued calls for regulation across the board as ai becomes more mainstream this year, 2024 is the year of the ai applications, and the application cannot be accepted. >> and in the market without regulations. >> senator cortez says. sb 915

here's 2 a.m. showers begin late in nature, but then we're really focusing on the north bay throughout saturday morning because we have steady, heavy rain falling for several hours. and then this front begins to push off to the south and east throughout the afternoon. but it looks like lot of the day on saturday is going to feature this wet weather. rain heavy at times for the system, swings out of here on sunday. look at the rainfall totals. the north bay specifically. a lot of areas likely exceeding an inch of rain. some areas could get close to 2 to 3in of rain. so that's an area we're watching very closely with this next storm system. of course, if the track shifts just a little bit farther south or a little bit farther north, these numbers could change. we'll fine tune this forecast as we get closer to saturday. a new winter storm watch is in effect now for the sierra starting tomorrow night into early sunday. another round of 1 to 2ft of snow, the highest snow totals occurring above about 5000ft. so here we go once again. accuweather seven day forecast a frosty morning today with sunshine. mostly cloudy tomorrow. there's that level

a live look outside right now at the bay bridge toll plaza. so far, the metering lights are not on yet and traffic is flowing smoothly right there. >> number seven a planned closure of interstate 680 in pleasanton this weekend has been canceled because of rain. this closure will be rescheduled for sometime next month. >> a bill to ban a tackle football in california for kids under the age of 12 cleared its first legislative hurdle. a state assembly committee voted 5 to 2 in favor of the measure that's authored by sacramento democrat kevin mccarthy. now, supporters say that the bill will help protect kids from brain injuries like concussions, while critics warn that it will cut children off from physical activity. >> skateboarding, hockey, skiing , bicycling, ice skating. you know, every sport or activity has an inherent danger, but this bill eventually leads to an outright ban for tackle football for kids. under the age of 12. just singling out that one sport. >> i can't with a conscious heart say hey and deny that the

. people were seen digging other people out of the snow as quickly as they could as search crews worked to see if anyone was injured or trapped. community members at palisades tahoe are very much still shaken up after yesterday's tragedy, and some questioning why it was even open in the first place, given the conditions, was surprised they had it open for like just given the variable conditions. >> yes, i was, i thought it would be closed with all the wind and the unstable surface. super windy last night it was howling all night. i could barely sleep. >> those those from palisades tahoe say that they had been involved in avalanche control assessment since sunday. and just to give you an idea of how widespread the damage was from this avalanche, officials say the debris field was 150ft by 450ft and ten feet deep palisades tahoe is expected to partially reopen today, with only select lifts, but they say to expect significant delays.

live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. lena >> thank you. what happened at palisades tahoe is something certainly concerning to anybody who ventures up to the sierra. so how do the ski resorts try to avoid a disaster? and what can you do to stay safe in the snow? abc seven news reporter lauren martinez has some advice that could save your life. >> the avalanche happened to behind me. >> given certain conditions. avalanches are a risk on snow covered mountains. mike reitzell, president of the organization ski california, said wednesday was a tough day. >> there is a profound sadness that goes across the industry. i mean, there's so much passion and skiing and writing. people care about other people that want to be part of this ski. >> california represents 36 resorts in california and nevada, reitzel says. the one thing they all have in common is they do not compromise on safety. >> the same things that resorts do on a daily basis. they're

going to do that. they're going to analyze the snowpack. they're going to look at the weather. they're going to look at historic data, ski and sporting goods stores sell avalanche safety equipment like outdoor adventures in fremont. >> rico is a rescue technology that can locate people buried or lost outdoors. for many brands, it's already embedded in jackets or backpacks. >> i think everything that i wear just has a rico in it. i haven't even tried to necessarily do that, but almost all the gear just comes with it. these days. um, which is great because resorts have an ability to find those wherever they are. so that's a very helpful tool for sure. yeah a life safety gear may not prevent the power of a deadly snow slide, but it could help locate someone. just be prepared for the types of conditions that are out there. um, know your limits. know your ability. um, on the mountain as well. >> in 2017, ski california created a mountain safety guide so resorts can provide a common message of safety to educate skiers and riders.

have bright skies today. dry conditions. here's a live look at sfo this morning. the day planner. it's quite lovely. first thing though this morning it is frosty frost advisories are in effect until 10 a.m. this morning. it's a bright afternoon. temperatures though a bit below average in the 50s. rain is back in the forecast here on saturday. we've upgraded the storm to a level two. a moderate storm because the rain will be heavy at times and we're watching the north bay, especially where we could have the possibility of some isolated flooding here saturday morning. the rain begins pretty late in nature, but as you go throughout the morning, there you can see future weather showing several hours of heavy rain around sonoma county. napa county points to the north and then this front begins to move south and then that heavy rain begins to move into san francisco. so oakland approaches the south bay as the evening wears on, and these rainfall totals will be a lot higher than what we just saw yesterday. again, the north bay, we're watching very closely a lot of areas exceeding not only an inch of rain, but some areas could get close to three inches of rain. of course, if the storm
