remains elevated. i'm meteorologist sandhya patel. a stronger storm is heading in for the weekend. i'll have the timeline on and the warnings coming up. abc seven news at six starts right now. >> building a better bay area moving forward. finding solutions. this is abc. seven news. >> oh, i know it sounds like somebody could just got buried. somebody's trying to get him. >> terrifying moments caught on video as an avalanche swept down the mountain at palisades tahoe resort, killing one person and injuring three others. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. we have developing news out of palisades tahoe resort. there was another avalanche this afternoon near the area known as wolverine bowl. this was on the other side of the mountain. most of the resort did open today. again our kate 22, which is the ski run where yesterday's avalanche hit, killing a bay area man and injuring three other people, however, remains

closed and people did return to palisades today to go skiing. >> but what happened yesterday, of course, on many minds, absolutely. >> abc seven news reporter j.r stone is live from olympic valley tonight we talked about that second avalanche. j.r, what are you hearing there dan ama we received confirmation of that second avalanche within the last couple of hours. >> it actually happened on the opposite side of the mountain here at palisades tahoe. the alpine meadows side of the mountain. the fortunate news here is that no one was hurt in that avalanche. and that is always good news when you hear that. now here is a map of where it happened in the wolverine bowl area. no guests or employees were involved, and that area was closed by ski patrol right after it happened. those from skiers tell us that this area that you're looking at is part of the k 222 ski run at palisades tahoe, a run that was closed thursday after a man died wednesday morning during an inbound avalanche right below the chair is the area known as

gs bowl, where that avalanche was reported. >> so terrible. you know, it's not something you ever want to see someone go through. and so again, the first thought was to surprise that people were actually here and up on the mountain. >> eric ratner was with his family and about to go snowboard thursday when we spoke with him. in fact, as we were talking with him, we heard an explosion, part of a process to groom the mountain so it is safe for skiing and snowboarding after a snowfall, you know, have you heard any booms or anything like that for the usual, you know, blasting, right there in the background? >> you can hear that from, you know, several miles away. but that's pretty typical. typically if it after it snows. >> in fact, we heard around a dozen explosions early thursday. they heard it again there. >> yep. there you go. >> a lot of a lot of booms there. definitely uh- taking care of trying to prevent another avalanche. i'm assuming a possibility, yes, but loud explosions like that are said to be common on powder days like this. >> still, the talk among

everyone we spoke with was the avalanche. palisades, tahoe posted this photo of patrol teams searching the area with poles after the avalanche, saying our heartfelt condolences are extended to all who suffered loss and trauma resulting from this incident. >> that just hate to see it, but you know, they try to mitigate, i think, as much as they can. >> when i heard about yesterday, it was just like, wow. so random. and it's just rare and really dark. >> i think it just gives you another reason to really take safety as the most important thing. when you're up here, um, you got to respect the mountain. thank you. >> and keep in mind, before that second avalanche that we heard today say that heard about and got confirmation about those from palisades tahoe said they had been doing avalanche hazard mitigation. and some of those booms that you heard there were likely from that area, or that mitigation was being done. now, more snow is expected this weekend. so it's likely they're

going to continue doing some of that mitigation. they continue hearing some of those booms coming into the coming days. now i will also say the cold weather is also a major issue. we have been dealing with black ice out here. chp also giving warnings to drivers along i-80. so if you are headed out for the weekend of snow, could see 8 to 12in. you'll want to be careful on those roadways because it is cold and it is very slick. reporting live at palisades tahoe j.r. okay j.r. thank you. >> and 66 year old kenneth kidd was killed in yesterday's avalanche. he was a resident of truckee and point reyes station in the north bay. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with those who knew him and say he was an avid skier. >> he was a good man. my heart is broken and my heart is breaking for his family. >> melody hawks says. her friend, 66 year old kenneth kidd, and his wife split their time between the small town charm of point reyes station and

the ski slopes of lake tahoe. >> he loved skiing. they were up there all the time and i. i'm pretty sure that that that, um, that trail just opened. that run just opened yesterday morning and i'm pretty sure he was like up and early wanting to be the first. >> officials say kidd was caught in an avalanche as wide as half a football field on the kt22 run at palisades tahoe wednesday morning. melanie says kidd had recently retired and was living his best life. >> it was a really good listener and, um, loved his family. good advice giver, but not a man of many words. >> in this town of 848 people. news of kidd's death has been the talk and hitting home for many. >> oh boy, this is jojo susan roselle is kidd's neighbor. >> she owns point razor, arabian adventures, horseback trail rides. >> i'm just so shocked. i saw it on, uh, um, the tv this morning, and i didn't realize it was him. and i'm just. i'm just. i'm so

sad. we've been neighbors for over 20 years, and he's always been a wonderful neighbor. and, um, i'm just devastated that that happened. >> terrible. it's terrible. >> garrett mason is reacting to kidd's passing. he owns point reyes surf shop, but he's also spent time on the slopes. >> i've been caught in avalanches and i know what it's like to get swallowed and, you know, be dug out, and it's not fun. it's very scary. >> at this time. the kidd family is requesting privacy. >> my heart goes out to the family. um, it really does. uh, it's so sad. and i'm so sorry for their loss in marin county. >> cornell. bernard abc seven news a skier who survived an avalanche in colorado says a wall of snow carried him 800ft down a slope and buried him under about 12ft of snow. >> scotch scott binge says the experience was surreal and terrifying. he says he was unconscious and buried for about 12 minutes. scott talked about what he went through and what

went through his head as the snow began to envelop him. >> it was just sorrow. i mean, i honestly thought i was going to die. it was just basically liquid cement on top of me, you know, really thought there was no way that i was going to be able to survive that. >> scott says his avalanche beacon was the key to his survival. his friend helped save his life. he recommends all backcountry skiers be aware of the avalanche forecast, where an avalanche beacon and have a snow probe and a shovel. scott binge spoke with us in depth earlier today on abc seven's program called getting answers. you can watch interviews like this one every weekday. getting answers airs at 3 p.m. here on abc seven, and wherever you stream. >> and there is another storm on the way. it will bring rain here to the bay area and more snow to the sierra. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel is tracking that for us. sandy. >> yeah, and dan and ama, let's talk about the avalanche danger for today. it does remain

elevated. the central sierra, the sierra central sierra avalanche forecast center is saying for the back country there, avalanche danger is considered real. and the concern here is you've got a weak snowpack. any wind that moves that snow can obviously dislodge an avalanche. so just keep that in mind. it does remain considerable. and with another storm coming in winter storm warning 7 p.m. tomorrow until 4 a.m. sunday. 1 to 2ft of snow, gusty winds. snow level will be rising after it starts out at 3500ft. coming up even higher. travel is going to be very difficult to impossible. a live view from mount rose. you see a few snowflakes there. level two storm with a weak atmospheric river coming our way on saturday . it is going to dump some heavy rain on parts of the bay area, but tomorrow night we get a few showers ahead of the main energy. saturday afternoon. then the rain intensifies as we head into the mid afternoon hours. i'll be back with a look at your tahoe forecast, plus how much rain you can expect coming right up for your holiday weekend. ama

all right, we will check back. >> thank you. sandy, a new developments in the court case. that's changing how san francisco responds to homelessness today. the ninth circuit court of appeals upheld a lower court's ruling and that ruling said the city cannot remove people from the sidewalk unless they are offered shelter. and there is space available. this means san francisco is still restricted when it comes to being able to do sweeps. setting camp and encampments, governor newsom says the court's ruling, quote, will only create further delays and confusion and he thinks the supreme court should weigh in on the matter. author >> cities are staying very tight lipped this evening about an incident that prompted them to cordon off a residential street in vallejo, american canyon and vallejo police officers, as well as napa county sheriff's deputies, swarmed the area more than two hours ago. this video from sky seven shows a dented sedan there. you see it in the middle of your screen on cronin drive. it appears to have rolled into a fence, which caused minor damage to the fence. to this

video from the ground shows officers calmly standing around. we did see some evidence markers on the street, but so far authorities are not saying anything about what happened and we'll have an update just as soon as we get that information. we will keep asking the first homicide of the year in san jose is a deliberate hit and run. that's according to police. around this time last night, a car hit a man at de canso drive and north first street. police say it was intentional and the pedestrian died as a result. his name has not been released publicly. >> today we learned which bart station will be the next to get new fare gates. right now there are only at the west oakland station. the gates are taller and harder to get through without paying. abc seven news reporter anser hassan shows you where riders will find them next. >> zara, emma just returned to the bay area. she uses bart a lot, but this was her first time through bart's new fare. >> gates. the gates open, the gates closed. and there was just something about that gate. and i didn't feel unsafe before, but i could imagine, you know, late at night and you're just kind of if

people aren't, are jumping the gates, then, you know, if something happens on the platform, it just feels kind of like a free for all. >> the new fare gates were just installed a few weeks ago at the west oakland bart station. the goal is to stop this for people who don't pay to ride bart. on thursday, bart announced eight stations that will be getting new gates next. antioch richmond, fruitvale in the east bay. across the bay, it will be sfo, civic center, montgomery powell street and 24th street. antioch mayor lamar thorpe believes the new gates add a sense of security. >> well, if you can't jump the gate and you're someone who's not paying because you're there to create trouble or problems for passengers, i'm excited that that we'll be able to create a new layer of protection for folks. >> bart estimates that fare evasion costs them more than $15 million a year. bart board director deborah allen says the new gates are a game changer, but not 100% fix. >> you know, this project was never designed at any point to

stop 100% of fare evasion. this is a technology. it's a machine. it's the first layer of improvement. >> bart board says it will cost $90 million to replace all 700 fare gates, which they hope to accomplish by 2025. the work on the next eight stations is set to begin in may. >> we showed a time lapse video at the meeting today, and they literally got these fare gates. the old ones removed and the new ones in place within two days. in oakland, anser hassan, abc seven news. >> and as unser mentioned, the point of the new gates is to reduce fare evasion. abc seven news reporter liam melendez put that to the test. >> could i try? you can try. okay, well, let's see. >> yeah, yeah. you see, she couldn't push through, but they're not totally foolproof. we left the cameras rolling for a while and see how people still tried to get through without paying the stories on abc seven news.com and the abc seven bay area app. >> all right, coming up next, an

business doesn't always have to involve getting a loan from a bank. for jessica sullivan and laurel robinson, some of their money is coming from the community. >> we are true small business owners in san francisco. we've been, you know, raising money for this through private equity, just the two of us, really. you know, pitching anyone who's willing to listen. >> these two own poppy, a new brunch restaurant set to open in the mission. they started by going around the city, serving at different locations. later this year is when they hope to open their permanent space. we are going to be in the mission on the corner of 18th and harrison. >> um, we're a daytime concert, so we're a full service luncheonette serving, um, breakfast and lunch all day. >> their restaurant is one of many small businesses listed on smcs. it's a website where owners of brick and mortar places can earn money from the public. ben lozano is the ceo. he says anyone can chip in money. >> we connect local small businesses with, um, people in their community who want to

invest in them. it could be the instagram followers of the business. it could be customers of the business, people in the community that know about the business. >> it also could be a good financial investment for those giving the money. it's a loan for small business owners. the money they get, they will have to pay back with interest. so if you donate $50, lozano says, you will get more back in monthly installments as they come and directly buy uh- bonds that are issued by the businesses listing the bonds on our marketplace and then the business. >> instead of paying back, um, uh, the loan to a bank pays back their community principal and interest monthly. >> dozens are listed on the website right now. lozano says they launched the company in 2020. since then, he says, small businesses have raised thousands. jessica and laurel have already raised over 30,000. it's money, they say feels different when they spend it. >> it's like, i think jessica and i both agree that, like particularly in san francisco, small businesses are what kind

and saturday is not a good travel day. heavy snow is expected above 5000ft. there will be some rain at the lower elevations. 38 slight chance of snow showers on sunday 41 degrees. and for martin luther king junior day, you're looking at partly cloudy skies, so a good day to be out on the slopes to enjoy the fresh powder that they have received. now in the sierra, they have picked up anywhere between 3 to 19in of snow in the last 24 hours. we are in a break right now, but check out this storm out here over the pacific. it does have a weak atmospheric river associated with it. all the right dynamics coming together, and that means we are going to get soaked on saturday. right now we take a look at live doppler seven, and we do have some cloud cover increasing ahead of the storm. live view from our east bay hills camera visibility is good right now. 50 degrees in san francisco, 49 in oakland, san jose 53, san mateo 48. and it is getting chilly in half moon bay, 43 degrees. beautiful view from our sutro tower camera right now. 48 in santa rosa in the mid 40s

already petaluma, fairfield, concord 48, livermore 45 degrees. here's a look at the headlines overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. cold and frosty areas once again like this morning. we had low 30s this morning at some of our official reporting sites. santa rosa airport, napa livermore. stronger storm is coming in for saturday and for martin luther king junior day dry with a mix of sun and clouds. in case you have plans. frost advisory from 3 to 10 a.m. these areas, all shaded in blue, will go under it. temperatures as low as 32 degrees. do expect frost, and you'll want to take care of your tender plants so they don't get damaged as you look at the low temperatures, they will range anywhere from the low to mid 30s. in the coldest north and east bay valleys 38 though in antioch most areas around the bay will be in the 40s, 38 in san jose. so bundle up tomorrow morning and don't forget the umbrellas for later in the day. tomorrow afternoon. clouds on the increase 40s 50s for your highs. coastal flood advisory 10

a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow. these areas once again due to the king tides, will experience some low-lying flooding happening with peak high tide shortly after 11 a.m. close to seven feet. it's a level two on our storm impact scale. moderate strength storm for saturday. heavy rain at times, gusty winds and the possibility of flooding. not just the small streams and creeks, but we're talking about roadway flooding as well as we time this out for you. 9:00 tomorrow night, you see some showers moving in. this is well in advance of the main storm. then saturday, here comes that level. two downpours saturday morning in the north bay. and that downpour just continues all into the early afternoon. heavy rain starts to shift by 4 p.m, but the concern is that excessive rain in the north bay could lead to some problems. it will all be gone by saturday night, but the rainfall projections pretty much reflect where the heaviest rain will be concentrated. you're looking at over an inch to almost three inches here. most other areas between a half an inch to almost an inch and a half. so it's

aren't cleared to fly after a defective door plug fell out of an alaska airlines plane last week, forcing an emergency landing. today, the federal aviation administration announced it's opening an investigation into boeing's quality control practices. every boeing 737 max nine with a door plug is grounded until the faa determines that each can safely return to operation. the pause affects about 171 planes worldwide. boeing responded, quote, we will cooperate fully and transparently with the faa and the ntsb on their investigations. alaska airlines says all passengers on board last week's flight received a full refund, as well as an extra $1,500 cash to cover expenses. >> this finding work after serving time in jail can be very difficult, sometimes impossible. we want to introduce you to the amazing men and women who are participating in a grueling program that turns inmates into california firefighters. >> it all started when i got a

abc seven news i-team has learned details of a multi-million dollar settlement to a wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of her own young daughters and their grandmother. and our de-noise is here with a story you will see only on seven tonight. dan. >> well, dan, lawyers for tiffany lee fought hard to keep the details of the settlement secret, but a judge ruled the public has a right to know. and i have the details from this document just filed in court. keith green's body was found in this field near healdsburg. may of 2016. >> he was a really great guy. um, care and loving with friends. >> his mother, colleen cudd, tries to get through the day without thinking about the murder. >> sometimes i wake up in the middle of the night and it'll all go through my mind again. so i'm seeing therapist and on medication, so i'm not too depressed. >> prosecutors charged green's former partner and mother of his two children, tiffany lee, her new boyfriend kaveh bayat, and their trainer and bodyguard

olivier adela, with murder. but a jury acquitted lee hung on byatt's charge, and adela pled down to accessory after the fact. he admitted to me from jail that he disposed of the body. as you're heading north in your car with keith green's body in your trunk, what's going through your mind? what's going through my mind? >> well, you're a black man in america, my friend. he's cool. you get rid of the body, you screw, you don't get rid of the body if you screw. >> as of today, there will be nobody held accountable for keith green's murder. >> the evidence ultimately was not enough. even before the criminal case finished, keith green's mother filed a wrongful death lawsuit against tiffany lee, heiress to a chinese real estate fortune, and through a court appointed guardian, lee's own daughters, now nine and 11 years old, joined the lawsuit against their mother. >> what was the aim of the lawsuit in the first place? >> you know, make sure that the girls had something for themselves when they turned 18 and that they weren't controlled by their mother. >> instead of going to trial, tiffany lee settled, and i can

now finally report the details. each of her daughters received $5 million. colleen cudd 100,000, and the estate $50,000 to administer the girls trust funds until they turn 18. our case, we didn't have to prove what her intent was. >> in our case, all we had to prove was that tiffany lee increased the risk of harm to keith green by her conduct, the plaintiff's attorney told me tiffany lee and keith green were involved in a nasty custody battle, and that she described green as a gold digger to her new boyfriend and their trainer and bodyguard. and in her words, he was a terrible father. and olivier, adela and kaveh bayat interpreted her disparaging comments as as a direction to go and get rid of keith green, mcgilligan's partner, says tiffany lee may have settled to avoid testifying she didn't take the stand in the criminal trial, but at a civil case, she certainly would have had to testify, so she would have been subject to not only direct examination but cross-examination as well. >> but attorneys who worked on

as i said, it is really badly needed right now. yeah >> doing their part. yeah. all right, let's get one last check on the weather meteorologist. >> sandhya patel is back. sandy. yeah >> and ama and dan, let's take a look at the heavy rain potential. this is showing parts of the northwestern portion of california and the north bay. under that excessive outlook for heavy rain, which means parts of the north bay could see some issues. now, when you look at the statewide projections, rainfall is highest along that area. that is under that outlook. it's anywhere between three to almost six inches of rain. of course, for the bay area, it's not going to be as much, but it's a level two storm for saturday on live doppler seven. it's coming together. it does have the tropical moisture tap. it is going to be a stronger storm than what we've experienced in the past week. as we take a look, showers coming in out ahead of the storm. so tomorrow night just some scattered light showers. and then here comes the heavier rain, which begins in the north bay in the morning and continues through the afternoon there. but for us or for the rest of the
