[ all scream ] [ laughter ] we were looking sort of at the top of the cliff. i had no idea he'd got sent off this cliff. if you could just hear them. the comms between everyone and their probe lines and the coordination and the efforts by ski patrol to make sure that there was not a single square inch of that snow that wasn't searched. it was amazing. >> it all happened in an instant. and tonight we are hearing more about those moments

when a deadly avalanche swept through the black diamond run at palisades tahoe and the emergency rescue work that followed. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. what an effort so many people made to save lives. and we're hearing firsthand tonight from some of the people caught in the avalanche as it swept down the mountain. more video is coming out showing the frantic moments and massive response at palisades tahoe. >> one of the people rescued is a man named jason parker. he described what it was like when rescuers found him. i felt this probe hit the middle of my back or right in my spine, and it just jarred me and i was like, oh man. >> and that's when i could hear the person above me just go, i found him, or we got him. and i just, ah, i mean, at that point, you know, it's probably going to be okay. you made it are just incredible. >> jason was not the only one. another woman walked us through her experience as she was headed down the mountain before getting hit by that wall of snow. initially i thought someone was crashing into the back of me because i just felt like my

whole lower body just get lifted and moved and then as i like, looked around and i just realized i was i couldn't even see still snow. >> i was just in the midst of a an avalanche. those those are just some of the stories being told by those who managed to survive yesterday's tragedy in tahoe. >> and tonight we are getting new perspective on how the tahoe ski community has responded since this happened. >> mountain teams wasted no time today performing some slope maintenance using explosives on nearby mountain faces, hoping to make ski runs safer in the area. >> oh my god. woo-hoo >> abc seven news reporter j.r stone is in tahoe tonight with the very latest two avalanches in two days here at palisades tahoe. >> the latest coming on the alpine meadows side of the mountain. here is a map of where it happened in the wolverine bowl area. no guests or employees were hurt or hit by the avalanche afterwards. the area was then closed by ski patrol. those from palisades

tahoe tell us they had been doing avalanche hazard mitigation prior to that avalanche, and we heard some of those explosions earlier for the usual, you know, blasting right there in the background. >> you can hear that from, you know, several miles away. but that's pretty typical. typically if it after it snows, a lot of a lot of booms there. >> definitely, uh, taking care of trying to prevent another avalanche. i'm assuming this is video of wednesday's avalanche that killed one man and left three others hurt. >> now, as to those noises and those booms, you heard, it's likely we'll keep hearing some of those explosions in the coming days. as part of the avalanche hazard mitigation, especially when you consider that more snow is expected come saturday. explosions basically make man made snow slides so that areas are safe. we spent thursday talking with both skiers and snowboarders about this. one said that the mountain can be unpredictable when it comes to weather. comparing it to the ocean and talking about

those rough conditions. on wednesday, the weather was, you know, it was snowing sideways, super windy, snowing really hard. >> i was surprised that anyone really had came out yesterday. when i heard about yesterday, it was just like, wow, so random. >> and it's just rare and really dark. >> family is more worried than i am. they didn't want me to come here, but i enjoy it. you kind of got to live what you enjoy. >> no strong wind gusts right now and the snow is not falling. but it is extremely cold outside . this cold weather has caused all sorts of problems on the roadways with black ice, chp even sending warnings out to drivers going along i-80 expected overnight to get down to seven degrees at palisade tahoe, jr stone, abc seven news and in the north bay, a small marin county town is mourning the loss of one of its residents, who died in the avalanche, 66 year old kenneth kidd was a resident of point reyes station, as well as truckee. >> it didn't take long for word

of his death in the avalanche to spread in this town of 848 people, he loved skiing. >> they were up there all the time and i. i'm pretty sure that that that, um, that trail just opened. that run just opened yesterday morning, and i'm pretty sure he was like up and early wanting to be the first. >> and kidd had retired recently and his neighbor of 20 years remembered him as a, quote, wonderful neighbor. the family has requested privacy at this time. just such a shame, obviously. >> and as for the conditions in the sierra tonight, as you can see, roads have been clearing up a bit since yesterday's snowstorm, but that's not going to last long. >> know abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking that and some weather of our own in the bay area. sandhya. >> that's right. we have a stronger storm heading in our direction. and dan and let's take a look at a live picture right now from mount rose where they're seeing a few flurries at this hour and not nearly as heavy as they had experienced over night. 24 our sierra snow totals were between 3 and 19in the avalanche danger between

tonight and tomorrow morning from the back country. avalanche forecast center, central sierra nevada is in the considerable category. winter storm warning 7 p.m. tonight. tomorrow night. excuse me until 4 a.m. sunday, 1 to 2ft of snow is expected. uh- heavy snow, gusty winds, travel is going to be very difficult to impossible. heavy as snow is expected above 5000ft. but that snow level is going to rise from 3500 to higher levels as we head towards the weekend. so if you're traveling to tahoe, mostly cloudy, gusty over the peaks. tomorrow is your best day to go. saturday. heavy snow. rain. windy. slight chance of snow showers sunday morning and then partly cloudy for martin luther king junior day, so i think you're better. bet would be to travel tomorrow, not saturday because saturday, a level two storm is moving in. it's got a weak atmospheric river component and it is going to dump some heavy rain across parts of the bay area. so we started out saturday morning. you will notice widespread rain, heaviest focused in the north

bay until 7 p.m. that's when we start to get the downpours in other parts of the bay area as well. i'll be back with a full look at the timeline, plus the storm concerns and the rainfall totals coming right up. dan. >> all right, sandhya, thank you . >> and we have new details tonight on a police chase and shooting in the north bay. officers say their chase with two suspects led to a corner of vallejo off of griffin drive, just across the freeway from six flags tonight. that's where we find abc seven news reporter tim johns with what neighbors are saying about it all. >> this is the aftermath of a wild card chase thursday afternoon. in hand. lexus sedan. these are 99 hollow chocolate. >> and he the wrong way. >> 29. that car chase starting out in american canyon in napa county around 315 and ending up here in vallejo. the napa county sheriff's office says the chase started after they attempted to make a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation, but the

driver of that car didn't stop the car ultimately became disabled near the intersection of sousa way and gateway drive. uh- cell phone in hand, single occupant. >> actually, no. we have multiple police say they then encountered a male suspect and an officer fired shots. >> ken wilson lives nearby and tells us he heard the whole thing. >> it sounded like i heard two shots and after i heard that uh- i put down the wood, i had my hand there and i went back to the back. >> the suspect was transported to a nearby hospital. armed police vehicles could then be seen searching the neighborhood for the second suspect, who authorities say they later found and took into custody. investigators say two firearms were also found at the scene. thursday's events have come as a shock to many people in this neighborhood. we spoke to several folks who live here and they tell us it's normally a pretty quiet area. >> i didn't sign up for all this

that includes daniel powell, who says having police activity around here is rare. usually you might see a police once, maybe once a month, maybe, maybe once every 2 or 3 months. >> and after a relatively tense night, many locals say they're just relieved it's over. >> an officer at this situation was over with. do we have any reason to be unsafe around here? you know, after this? and he said, no in vallejo. >> tim johns abc seven news. >> and we have new details on the fiery bart derailment in between lafayette and orinda on new year's day. and just how close of a call it was. >> although it looked catastrophic, it was quite minimal in in the grand scheme of things, uh, we primarily had to replace coverboard insulators and we had to realign the track. but for the most part, uh, we dodged a bullet, so to speak. >> just three years ago, bart replaced that section of track with a voter approved $3.5 billion called measure rr. or in

this new year's day derailment, bart said a computer failure meant that a train operator had to get out and switch a piece of track that ended up failing. when a later train came by, nine people were hospitalized with minor injuries but were released later that day, finding ways to build a better bay area is a daily focus for us, and tonight, one of those potential breakthroughs is underway in the south bay, a landmark hotel in the very middle of downtown san jose could be a sign of the future for the industry, as abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez explains, this would turn hotel rooms into college dorms. >> a historic hotel in downtown san jose is up for sale. the signia by hilton was formerly the fairmont, and while the signia continues business as usual, details of it being on the market are unclear. what is certain is what's planned for the south tower above morton steakhouse this year. san jose state university will transform hotel beds into student dorm rooms, a move the college's

calling the bay area's largest post-pandemic conversion of a downtown commercial property to residential housing. i think that is, uh, absolutely incredible and very much needed right now, alex tattinsky, ceo of the downtown san jose association, said. while it's sad the hotel is losing rooms from a business perspective, there is underutilized space with the convention business that we have currently. >> um, the amount of hotel rooms are not really needed right now. >> renovation of the south tower is scheduled to begin in august, and it will add to the vibrancy that we're so badly need. >> uh, in our core, especially during the week, uh, during business hours, hundreds of student residents will be a short distance walk to small businesses and a seven minute walk to campus along downtown's core pedestrian boulevard. >> the paseo downtowns in the united states, in particular, um, have been, uh, for a long time. >> business hubs cetinski says. >> downtsa jos like many

other cities, are aiming for a balance of business and housing post-pandemic, like the downtowns that had a healthier mix between residential and business fared better, and they recovered much faster. >> uh- san diego is a great example. >> san jose state's project is referred to as spartan village on the paseo, the new home for spartans in the heart of downtown will include 700 student beds and 124 affordable student beds. in san jose, lauren martinez, abc seven news and one final fun. >> abc seven building a better bay area breakthrough, a restaurant in downtown oakland is enjoying a serious spike in business thanks to one of tiktok's biggest stars. yeah mama t's got a surprise visit recently from social media food critic keith lee. >> his reviews of small mom and pop restaurants have gotten millions of followers, and it means if he shouts out a local place's food, it's usually great for business. >> i knew that he was in town. i knew he was going to be uh- doing some, uh, mom or pop type

local resources on our website. abc seven news.com slash. take action. >> it was powerful testimony today. all right. let's go back and talk a little more about the weather in the sierra. we want to show you just how dangerous the conditions are up there. watch this. >> yeah. california highway patrol shared this video taken at donner summit. it's so slick. this truck is sliding down 8-80 with a chp cruiser following it. >> there were chain controls for 8-80 at donner summit until this afternoon. >> all right, so we want to get a check on that weather. yeah. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is back. >> sandy. yeah. >> dan, enjoy this break that we have in between storms because these things are going to change dramatically. let me show you a live picture right now from the reno area. you can see that the snow is on the ground. this is obviously good to see. taking a look at our rain chances, we really are going to notice the rain chances increase increasing as we head into saturday. most areas are going to see their spike as we head towards the afternoon and evening. you will notice at 7:00 90, probably 80 on saturday of seeing the rain.

so we check out live doppler seven. it is a wide perspective and you will notice that there is quite the moisture plume stretching out across the pacific and it goes all the way back towards hawaii. so yes, we have an r two, a weak atmospheric river moving in our direction. and that is going to bring some storm concern rains. so the biggest concerns on saturday flooding a high likelihood downed trees moderate possibility power outages medium . as we look at the sierra snow it's going to be a high storm concern, especially if you're traveling. so keep that in mind. here's a look at the headlines overnight into tomorrow morning. cold and frosty areas. just like this morning. this morning, some of our official reporting sites were down to the low 30s. saturday a stronger storm coming in. martin luther king junior day is dry. a mix of sun and clouds. if you do have the day off, it is looking pleasant. the chill is in 34 degrees right now in danville. livermore 36

degrees 47. in san francisco and 42 in oakland. as you take a look at the north bay calistoga, 3544 degrees in santa rosa, frost advisory 3 to 10 a.m. these areas shaded in blue frost will form. temperatures will drop to 32 degrees, so protect those tender plants. high clouds are coming in that may prevent it. the numbers from dropping too dramatically, but they're not everywhere. so here's a look at your morning temperatures down near or slightly below freezing. in the case of lakeport, 32 fairfield 30. in livermore, most areas will be in the 30s and the 40s. tomorrow afternoon. you're looking at highs in the 40s and the 50s with a mix of sun and clouds, king tides bringing a coastal flood advisory 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow, close to seven foot peak tide occurring just before 11 a.m. it is a level two on our storm impact scale for saturday. rain, heavy at times, gusty winds possible of flooding, excessive rain potential along the north coast and it includes the north bay. so we're going to time this out for you. you will

notice that saturday morning the rain is coming down. it is going to get heavier in the north bay first as we head towards the afternoon hours, the storm looks to stall in the evening and then slide southward, bringing downpours. now, if it does stall, this could really change things up and this continues as we head towards early sunday morning. rainfall projections highest in the north bay, about an inch to almost three inches. elsewhere you're looking at a third of an inch to almost an inch of rain. the winds will kick up as well, gusty at times 2530 miles an hour in the early afternoon, picking up over 30 miles an hour for the late afternoon evening and even stronger for the higher terrain as far as snow goes in the sierra. here's a quick look. 23in at donner by noon 21 kirkwood by sunday at noon. the accuweather seven day forecast. cold morning, cloudier afternoon. we are looking at a wet and windy level two storm on saturday morning. chance of showers. afternoon sun martin luther king junior day is nice and then a weaker system. level one for tuesday into wednesday.
