>> i'm andrea fujii in for rhiannon. we begin with a barrage of u.s. missiles raining down an iran backed militant targets in yemen, a us led coalition launched dozens of airstrikes overnight, taking direct aim at houthi rebel locations. >> the houthis say at least five of its fighters were killed and the operation was in retaliation for nearly 30 attacks on commercial shipping in the red sea. and it's fueling more fears. the mideast war could widen. this morning, american fighter jets and a submarine sending a message striking back against iranian backed houthi rebels. >> it looks like they not only went after the sites where they launched these iranian supplied weapons, they went after multiple, if not dozens of storage facilities. >> pentagon officials say the u.s. and british military launched retaliatory strikes against more than 60 targets in yemen, using tomahawk cruise missiles. new video shows warplanes taking off from the uss eisenhower carrying out strikes on coastal radar sites, drone and missile storage and launching locations. earlier, the white house warned the houthis could bear the consequences if they do not stop

attacks on commercial shipping in the red sea. >> we're going to do what we have to do to counter and defeat these threats that the houthis keep throwing up on commercial shipping in the red sea. >> the response follows an attack on tuesday, when the u.s. and uk shot down 18 drones and three missiles from the houthis since mid-november, the pentagon says houthi fighters have attacked 27 commercial ships in the red sea, where 15% of the world commerce passes through. the houthis claim their strikes are in retaliation for israel's war in gaza, and warned any u.s. attack will not go without a response from the iranian backed rebels. >> we've done everything we can to deter this, but it obviously did not work in the choice was up to a red. so i do think iran will likely amp up it through its proxies. of course. >> in a statement, president biden saying he will not hesitate to direct further measures. this all coming as secretary of defense lloyd austin is hospitalized after suffering complications from a procedure for prostate cancer. meanwhile, abc news has learned president biden first met with austin about possible strikes in yemen on january 1st, the same

day austin was hospitalized. the defense department inspector general is now investigating after the public and the white house were unaware of austin's condition and hospital stay for days. the pentagon says austin is in contact with his senior staff. austin released a statement last night saying the strikes were meant to disrupt and degrade the houthis capabilities. >> also breaking overnight, a us navy helicopter has crashed off southern california. the navy says the seahawk chopper went down in san diego bay last night during a routine training exercise. all six crew members survived. a safety boat was on location at the time of the crash to help bring the crew ashore. >> another breaking story. we're following a search underway in idaho's back country, where three people were caught in an avalanche. two people have been rescued so far. meanwhile, in california, an avalanche rocked the same tahoe area last night for a second time. there are no one was hurt. and new video shows the first avalanche to hit in that tahoe area on wednesday. a lone skier is visible before

disappearing. several people were rescued after that avalanche, but at least one skier died and three people were injured. >> well, the system that helped create those avalanches is hitting the midwest, where blizzard warnings are posted right now, more than a foot of snow is expected in some areas overnight near whiteout conditions in kansas, intense winds whipping snow through the air, part of a system that blasted montana. wind chills clocked at -35 degrees and covered vital roadways near salt lake city, with powder. even dusting palm trees in las vegas with snow. now that storm is targeting the midwest, there are blizzard warnings in six states with chicago under a winter storm warning. presidential candidate nikki haley canceled in-person events in iowa today due to those conditions and starting tonight, the storm is set to drench parts of the already hard hit northeast little falls, new jersey, in crisis. the passaic river

reaching major flood stage. water is now pouring into this neighborhood. >> the sun is setting and the streets are filling up. people are being asked to evacuate because the river is going to keep rising through the dark of night in parts of maine, cleaning up to these docks destroyed. >> and this waterfront restaurant ripped away. by the current. there you go. >> he goes. there she goes. >> behind the system, comes a deep freeze set to stick around into next week with single digit wind chills. even in houston and a sign of the danger cold can cause in california. this semi sliding down a highway near lake tahoe, its brake lines froze up. thankfully the driver is safe. some scary moments in the south there were tornado warnings in four states. we'll take a closer look at the forecast coming up. >> hunter biden has pleaded not guilty to federal tax charges. entering the plea himself in a los angeles courtroom. the president's son is facing nine felony and misdemeanor counts for failing to pay $1.4 million

in taxes over a four year period. money he has since paid back biden's trial is now set for june. if convicted, he could get up to 17 years in prison. >> the republican white house hopefuls are counting down to the iowa caucuses now just three days away. but frigid and snowy weather is throwing a wrench in the final push to sway voters. abc's em. nguyen joins us from the campaign trail in des moines. good morning, m andrea. >> good morning. yeah. the frigid cold temperatures are expected to last through next week, potentially affecting voter turnout on monday. >> but the stakes are high as the iowa caucus is all about momentum, which could make or break a campaign season. this morning, blizzard warnings across iowa forcing some republican presidential candidates to cancel in-person events. former un ambassador nikki haley replacing a friday event with a telephone town hall. her spokesperson saying stormy weather won't stop us from ensuring iowans hear nikki's vision. >> i am excited because obviously i have been

campaigning all over the sweet state for 11 months, so it's fun that we can kind of bring this to fruition and see where it is. >> this as the gop frontrunner, donald trump spends another day in court, the second this week during closing arguments in his civil fraud trial, the former president lashing out at the judge in unauthorized remarks, calling the case a political witch hunt. the judge had previously found trump over valued his real estate properties for years, allowing him to get better deals on loans and insurance. the courts now only deciding how much trump and his business should pay. the state attorney general, letitia james, arguing trump should also never be allowed to do business in new york again. >> it's a disgrace and they should pay me damages back in iowa, governor ron desantis warning against making this election about the former president. >> if trump is the candidate, you have, the election will be about legal issues, criminal trials, convict, maybe convicted. >> i mean, there's all kinds of

stuff that we don't know is going to happen, uh, january 6th, not to be forgotten in iowa. >> president joe biden's team with plans to descend on des moines on caucus day to remind voters what's at stake. his campaign accusing trump and maga republicans of launching an assault on america's freedoms when iowans kick off the 2024 election cycle on monday, they're expected to confront some zero temperatures. but candidates are expressing optimism that their supporters will still come out. andrea m thank you. >> now to the other major dispute unfolding at the texas border, where state troopers have seized one town's park despite the mayor's wishes. images shot by the mayor of eagle pass show fencing and military vehicles blocking the park. now, the park is known to be a staging area for law enforcement carrying out governor abbott's operation lone star, tasked with preventing immigrants from illegally crossing the border. the mayor of eagle pass saying, quote, this is not something that we

mall. 2020 tonight on abc, a california man came within a nanosecond of being hit by an out of control car careening in his direction. >> he was just checking his mailbox and managed to jump out of the way just in time, saving him, at the very least, a trip to the hospital, a trial is underway in connecticut, where a woman is accused of helping her onetime boyfriend cover up the murder of his ex-wife. >> abc's alison kosik has details from this morning. >> day two expected in the trial of michelle traconis. she's accused of helping her boyfriend at the time, fotis dulos cover up this suspected murder of his ex-wife, jennifer dulos, in her connecticut home in may 2019. dulos friends and loved ones were in court yesterday,

including her 88 year old mother, for the start of the long awaited trial. a connecticut jury watched body camera footage of officers on the missing persons call for dulos defense, covering what appeared to be blood on a range rover parked in her garage on the right passenger side of the vehicle on the floor. >> i observed what appeared to be a footprint. uh, a red, reddish and color could have been a footprint of blood. >> police allege fotis dulos waited for jennifer dulos to return home from dropping their kids at school, attacking her in the garage and trying to clean up the scene. police believe he then drove off with her body in another suv that she had, which was later found abandoned at a local park. surveillance video shows dulos discarding trash bags and a rolled up carpet in hartford. troconis has denied any involvement, but prosecutors have charged her with conspiracy to commit murder, tampering with evidence and hindering the investigation. >> my sister is innocent, with

no doubt, and we're here together as a family to acknowledge that this is a tragedy. >> when the mother of five vanished, the search for her dominated international headlines as the story even inspiring a lifetime movie. fotis dulos was charged with her murder. he took his own life in 2020. troconis is accused of helping to carry out the plot. troconis family says she's being scapegoated. >> she's a mother, a daughter, a sister, an amazing mother and just an amazing human being and we know that the truth will prevail. >> a judge this week declared jennifer dulos dead more than four years after her disappeared , despite her body never being found. and for her family, this is a chance to hold someone criminally accountable in jennifer's death and disappearance. the trial is expected to last six weeks. andrew andrea. >> allison. thank you. boeing says it will fully cooperate with a new faa investigation. it
