with boeing aircraft. >> the faa now opening a quality control investigation and rising tensions in the middle east. >> and the u.s. is right in the middle. overnight, president biden ordering airstrikes in the region. good morning. it's friday, january 12th. >> happy friday everyone. we're going to start with a check of our forecast for drew. >> good morning. so we do have frost advisories out there this morning. it is cold to begin our friday. we'll take a live look at pier 39 where it is dry. we have partly cloudy skies out there. you definitely want to have those extra layers this morning. we're well into the 30s away from the coast. we're down to 33. in danville this morning, 38 in san jose. good morning, saint helena. we're at 35 degrees. this frost advisory will be in effect until 10 a.m. this morning. so just like yesterday, you may wake up to frost on your windshield. frost on your plants. it's just a cold start to the day. it's quiet. from the exploratorium camera. it's a partly sunny day. we're going to have clouds advancing in ahead of rain. we're tracking tomorrow, so partly sunny into the afternoon. those temperatures getting into the

50s. by 9 p.m, there may be an isolated chance of a shower in the north bay, but much of the rain is going to hold off until tomorrow. it's for that fact. we have the storm impact scale, a level two, a moderate storm on saturday. thatrillionain and will be heavy at times. we'll take a closer look at the timeline of that rain coming up in about eight minutes. let's check in with traffic and gloria good morning. >> good morning drew. good morning to everyone so far. roads are looking pretty good this morning on this friday. and we know traffic is a little lighter on friday's anyway. but let's get a live look outside right now. this is our 680 camera in walnut creek. and there had been a single car crash there on southbound 680 at north main street, but that has cleared up, so no major issues from that at this time. and then a look at your drive times for this morning. it is early. so everything's in the green. no delays right now. thank you gloria. >> two avalanches and two days today. there is more risk of avalanches in the lake tahoe area. this morning we're hearing from some of the people on the mountain wednesday morning when the snow began to move. more

video is coming out showing those frantic moments and the massive response at palisades tahoe. one of the people rescued is a man named jason parker. he described what it was like when rescuers found him. >> i felt this probe hit the middle of my back or right in my spine, and it just jarred me and i was like, oh man. and that's when i could hear the person above me just go, i found him! or we got him. and i just, ah, i mean, at that point, you know, it's probably going to be okay. you made it. >> oh, goodness. that's incredible. that's just one story being told by those who managed to survive wednesday's tragedy in tahoe. abc seven news reporter lena howland live in the studio with more on this. lena kumasi. >> good morning. >> despite two avalanches in two days with the latest in an area on the alpine meadows side of the mountain, palisades tahoe is expected to partially reopen again this morning, with only select lifts open. here's a map of where the second avalanche hit. it happened in the wolverine bowl area right around

1230. no guests or employees were hurt or hit by the avalanche afterwards. the area was then closed by ski patrol. those from palisades tahoe tell us they had been doing avalanche hazard mitigation, often using explosives prior to that avalanche. and this is video wednesday's avalanche that killed one man and left three others hurt. more explosions are expected in the coming days as part of the avalanche hazard mitigation. with more snow on the way tomorrow. so skiers and snowboarders, fearless to get back out there, yesterday told us the mountain can be unpredictable when it comes to the weather. >> there was, you know, it was snowing sideways, super windy, snowing really hard. i was surprised that anyone really came out yesterday. >> family is more worried than i am. they didn't want me to come here, but i enjoy it. you kind of got to live what you enjoy. >> palace shades tahoe says even though there were no reports of any guests or employees impacted by yesterday's avalanche, ski patrol still searched the area

using a dog team. pros and beacons to be safe before the lift could be reopened, according to the sierra avalanche center, the same area where these avalanche happened, where these avalanches happened is still under a considerable risk of more avalanches this morning. live in studio lena howland abc seven news a lot to keep following. >> lena. thank you. in the north bay, a small town in marin county is mourning the loss of one of its residents who died in the avalanche. 66 year old kenneth kidd was a resident of point reyes station, as well as truckee. now, it did not take long for word of what happened to spread in this town of roughly 850 people. >> he loved skiing. they were up there all the time and i. i'm pretty sure that that that, um, that trail just opened. that run just opened yesterday morning, and i'm pretty sure he was like up and early, wanting to be the first kid had retired recently. >> and his neighbor of 20 years remembered him as a, quote, wonderful neighbor. >> developing news this morning,

a us led coalition launched dozens of airstrikes taking direct aim at houthi rebels and locations in yemen. and gloria. that operation was in retaliation for nearly 30 attacks on commercial shipping in the red sea. >> it was kumasi american fighter jets and a submarine sent a message striking back against iran backed houthi rebels. pentagon officials say that the u.s. and british military launched retaliatory strikes against more than a dozen sites in yemen, using tomahawk cruise missiles, new video shows. u.s. warplanes taking off from the uss eisenhower, where they carried out strikes on coastal radar sites, drone and missile storage and launching locations. the white house warned the houthis could bear the consequences if they do not stop these attacks. >> we're going to do what we have to do to counter and defeat these threats that the houthis keep throwing up on commercial shipping in the red sea. >> the response follows an attack on tuesday. that's when

the u.s. and u.k. shot down 18 drones and three missiles from the houthis since mid-november. the pentagon says that houthi fighters have attacked 27 commercial ships in the red sea, where 15% of world commerce passes through. in a statement, president biden says he will, quote, not hesitate to direct further measures. >> stephanie, gloria, thank you. developing news out of southern california. six navy crew members are being evaluated after their helicopter crashed into san diego bay. they were in a helicopter that trains new naval aviators to fly, and because they were training a safety boat was on location. federal firefighters were also on site and helped all six members to shore safely. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. >> a live look right now at sfo. we're still seeing canceled flights a week after a door plug flew off of an alaska airlines plane mid-flight this morning, there have been 55 canceled flights at sfo, and most of those are from alaska and

united. both airlines fly that. boeing 737 max nine, and those planes have been grounded pending inspections. this morning, the faa is launching an investigation into boeing's quality control practices. they want to know if the plane was built as it was designed and if it met faa safety regulations. boeing responded, saying, quote, we will cooperate fully and transparently with the faa and the ntsb on their investigations . as for the people on the flight, when that door plug flew off, alaska airlines say they all got full refunds and an extra $1,500 in cash to cover expenses. >> crab season is finally opening in the bay area. fishers can start collecting their catches next thursday, while commercial fishermen can go out and drop their traps. there will be restrictions as the state is requiring a 50% reduction to try to keep humpback whales from getting entangled. that's been the issue. migrating whales are

the reason the season has been delayed since november. >> ocean water is flooding some roads and parking lots in mill valley. look at this. the city issued an advisory about the expected king tides. they were projected to reach 6.9ft. the king tide describes exceptionally high tides. it occurred during a newer full moon king tides are also expected in the area today and tomorrow. drew 5.8 kumasi, and we're looking at live doppler seven along with satellite. >> it's pretty quiet across california this morning. you notice some clouds on satellite moving in. it's all ahead of our next storm system that is coming into two pieces. first, we'll have a warm front move through here in the overnight hours. that will bring us some light showers. first thing tomorrow morning and then the cold front will swing through here in the afternoon to bring us some heavy rain tomorrow. taking a look at the morning drive this morning, though, the only issue we have when it comes to the forecast, some really chilly temperatures right now. frost advisories are in effect. we're starting out in the 30s, but it's just a mix of

sun and clouds later on this morning, as temperatures starting to warm into the 40s by about 9 a.m, today's a partly sunny day. it's dry today. we'll have those temperatures going into the mid 50s for daytime highs, but tomorrow we bring in the storm impact scale level two. for saturday we will see rain heavy at times along with some gusty winds. looking at the hour by hour forecast for saturday, we have a low chance of rain first thing in the morning and then those chances start to go up towards the middle part of the day and certainly into the afternoon. that will start to see some heavier showers move into the forecast. so saturday just expect to have on and off rain throughout the entire day. we also have a winter storm warning in effect starting at 10 p.m. today. we're talking 1 to 2ft of snow above 4500ft. could see a few inches below 3000ft, so we'll take a closer look at the snowfall totals and we'll go hour by hour in future weather. show you that line of rain moving through tomorrow. coming up in about nine minutes. >> all right. we look forward to that, drew. thank you. still ahead, the new details we're learning about the bart train derailment on new year's day.

more than 700 positions are going to be cut and the impacted employees work on some of the most recognizable products, including google assistant, pixel and fitbit. google says it's working to find other roles for some of the affected employees. amid the restructure, saying these layoffs come after waves of earlier post pandemic layoffs crashed across the tech industry and the wider economy. kelly-moore paints is furloughing 700 employees. the paint company is facing thousands of lawsuits related to asbestos in its paint from decades ago. it's hoping to find new investors to keep the company running. kelly moore moved from the bay area to texas

area is not a place for tourists, right now. he said he was surprised by the amount of tents and people living in cars. he also said he decided to leave because of, quote, lackluster meals. >> um, and an allergic reaction that sent him to the hospital. >> now that's a lot. despite all of that, he did think the bay area for showing him love and hospitality. he's known for his reviews of mom and pop restaurants before he left, though, he gave a stellar review to a restaurant in oakland. mama t's so mama t's got a surprise visit from keith lee. he was a big fan of the restaurant's grilled chicken sandwich and potato salad. i knew that he was in town. >> i knew he was going to be, uh, doing some, uh, mom and pop type places, but i did not know when he was coming, and i did not know when he came. i was excited and happy and just hoping that it would be a good

review. all right, so since that review, the owner of mama t's miss tina right there says she has seen quite a few new customers coming in to try new food and that is what we want. >> yes, this is what i'm going to choose to focus on. i'm glad he found mama t's. i'm glad you had a good experience. all of that other stuff, i don't know. >> yeah, i mean, really so he clearly loves the grilled chicken sandwich there. >> but i will say i read up one of his reviews. yeah, the famous fish sandwich. he was, uh, not pleased with the crust, apparently. oh really? yeah. he gave it a 7.5 out of ten. oh, wow. >> he gave some body. >> i don't want to name any names. he gave somebody in the bay a 2.500. >> really? wow wow. well, i saw he did visit a couple of other restaurants in the bay area in san francisco. he was at double decker and then he went to chef greens in oakland. so it's good that he's amplifying the voices of local restaurants in the rounds. but some of the comments i feel like, you know, we hear

there. we have frost advisories in effect. we are starting out in the 30s once again in our coldest cities. and it's one of those days where it's not quite as bright as we were yesterday. we'll find that we have a partly sunny sky. the additional cloud cover today is just in advance of the storm system we're tracking tomorrow. that will bring us some on and off showers and some heavy rain at times today. it's partly sunny out there. temperatures after that chilly start this morning going into the 50s. now tonight we'll see thatrillionain really return after midnight tonight and that's going to keep temperatures more in the 40s and in the 50s. here's future weather as you go hour by hour late tonight. there may be a light isolated sprinkle before the day is through in the north bay, but it's really tomorrow morning. we'll see the storm get its act together. showers begin first in the north bay. then we'll start to see that rain become area wide throughout the early afternoon, and then some heavier showers start to develop as we head towards the evening. total rainfall with this storm system. a good estimate for a lot of us between a half of an inch and an inch of rain. higher amounts likely in the north bay. we're watching that area very closely, especially sonoma county. they've been outlined for the risk of flooding,

hit theaters. >> we have new details now on the fiery bart derailment in between lafayette and orinda on new year's day, and just how close of a call it was. >> although it looked catastrophic, was quite minimal in in the grand scheme of things , uh- we primarily had to replace coverboard insulators and we had to realign the track. but for the most part, uh- we dodged a bullet, so to speak. just three years ago, bart replaced that section of track with a voter approved $3.5 billion measure called measure rr. >> in this new year's day derailed, bart had said a computer failure meant that a train operator had to get out and switch a piece of track that ended up failing. when a later train came by, nine people were hospitalized with minor injuries but were released later that day . we now know which bart stations will be next to get new fare gates. >> yes, the west oakland one is

the only station right now that has the gates. they are taller and they're harder to get through without paying. abc seven news reporter anser hassan shows you where riders will find them next. in. >> zahra amir just returned to the bay area. she uses bart a lot, but this was her first time through bart's new fare gates. >> the gates open the gates closed, and there was just something about that. and i didn't feel unsafe before, but i could imagine, you know, late at night and you're just kind of if people aren't, are jumping the gates, then, you know, if something happens on the platform, it just feels kind of like a free for all. >> the new fare gates were just installed a few weeks ago at the west oakland bart station. the goal is to stop this. people who don't pay to ride bart on thursday, bart announced eight stations that will be getting new gates next antioch, richmond and fruitvale in the east bay across the bay, it will be sfo, civic center, montgomery, powell street and 24th street. antioch. mayor lamar thorpe believes the new gates add a sense of

security. well if you can't jump the gate and you're someone who's not paying because you're there to create trouble or problems for passengers, i'm excited that that we'll be able to create a new layer of protection for folks. bart estimates that fare evasion costs them more than $15 million a year. as bart board director deborah allen says, the new gates are a game changer. but not 100% fix. you know, this project was never designed, and at any point to stop 100% of fare evasion. >> this is a technology. it's a machine. learn. it's the first layer of improved mount. >> bart's board says it will cost $90 million to replace all 700 fare gates, which they hope to accomplish by 2025. the work on the next eight stations is set to begin in may. >> we showed a time lapse video at the meeting today, and they literally got these fare gates, the old ones removed and the new ones in place within two days. >> in oakland, anser hassan, abc seven news. >> well, as unser mentioned, the point of these new gates is to reduce fare evasion. abc seven

survived. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in studio and lena, the avalanche threat is heightened again today . >> stephanie. that's right. just like yesterday, the same area where these avalanches happened is still under a considerable risk of avalanches this morning, according to the sierra avalanche center. here's a map of where the second avalanche hit yesterday on the alpine meadows side of the mountain. it happened in the wolverine bowl area right around 1230. no guests or employees were hurt or hit by the avalanche. the area was then closed by ski patrol afterwards so that they could search the area. those from palisades tahoe tell us they have been doing avalanche hazard mitigation using explosives. prior to that avalanche. and this is video of wednesday's avalanche that killed one man and left three others hurt. more explosions are expected in the coming days as part of the avalanche hazard mitigation plan. with more snow on the way tomorrow. >> so here are the usual, you know, blasting right there in

forecast region by region, it's just a day where it's limited sunshine. not nearly as bright as we were yesterday. and we'll find those temperatures into the mid 50s for our daytime highs tomorrow. the rain is back in the forecast. the abc seven storm impact scale. it's at a level two for saturday, where rain could be heavy at times, along with some gusty winds. so the saturday forecast as we go hour by hour tomorrow, you see those chances begin to ramp up by about eight nine, 10 a.m. and then they stay pretty elevated throughout the day and into the afternoon, where we could find some rounds of heavy rain, and specifically the north bay will find some of the heaviest rainfall totals. more snow coming to the sierra, a winter storm warning begins at 10 p.m. today. the heaviest snow likely falling tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening, 1 to 2ft of snow above 4500ft. we'll take a closer look at the rainfall, the totals and the timeline

and build affordable housing. her campaign says they've already lined up political endorsements from former senator barbara boxer and sacramento mayor darrell steinberg. new developments in the court case that is changing how san francisco responds to homelessness. the ninth circuit court of appeals is upholding a lower court's ruling that says the city cannot remove people from the sidewalk unless they are offered shelter, and there is space available. this means san francisco is still restricted when it comes to being able to do sweeps and encampment. governor newsom says the court's ruling, quote, will only create further delays and confusion. says he thinks the supreme court should weigh in on the matter. bay area cities and counties are getting a look at new rapid response shelters to help address the homelessness crisis. >> a company called pallet stopped in san francisco to show

off its two new shelter options. they're called the sleeper, which is 70ft■!s, and the 120 square foot ensuite, which as its name indicates, includes a bathroom and shower. they have a little more space, which is something that residents asked for a little more room for storage and shelving, and then they have an improved energy efficiency, which is really important for municipalities as it saves them a lot of money on operating costs. pallets. first generation shelters are in 40 cities across california, including san jose and oakland. the shelters can also be used for emergency shelter following natural disasters and mobile workforce housing in san jose. >> there is a new project that the mayor hopes can be a model statewide. it is taking place at the pacific motor inn. it will offer interim housing for the unhoused. abc seven news reporter dustin dorsey shows us how the project will expand to offer housing for everyone in winter. >> temperatures serve as a reminder of the crisis on the streets in san jose, with thousands left out in the cold with no place to live. but help

is on the way. >> we're getting people out of encampments into the an old motel that is being immediately renovated and turned around to get people off the streets, something that has led to a positive curve in the unsheltered homelessness numbers in san jose. >> but city leaders say this housing solution is even more beneficial. >> this project is not just another housing project, but it is a beacon of hope for a more inclusive, vibrant urban landscape that is open for everyone. this land along south second street will help immediate housing needs. >> first 72 emergency interim housing units will join 482 others developed since the start of 2023. then, in a few years time, the site will be expanded and converted again into a mixed income housing development, with 1000 units available. >> we've been talking about this. we said we need immediate solutions to homelessness. we've got to get people out of encampments today. but we also need more housing at all levels of income, from affordable housing to market rate housing. this project literally does all of that. it's a model.

an inch of rain. but we're watching the north bay very closely, especially parts of sonoma county, where we could see rainfall approaching 2 to 3in. so it's for that fact. parts of sonoma county have been outlined for the potential of heavy rain. that does also include points to the north, like ukiah, where we could have some pockets of minor flooding occur on our area. roadways that's something we'll watch very closely in the evening. tomorrow we'll get the tahoe forecast. it's mostly cloudy today, but heavy snow returns here tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening with winter storm warnings in effect that snow level at about 4500ft and above 4500ft will likely see about 1 to 2ft of snow in spots. here's the accuweather seven day forecast cold this morning. cloudy today, wet and windy tomorrow. we'll dry out for sunday looking nice for the holiday on monday and then our next chance of showers will come in the middle part of next week. laura >> yeah, well, right now we want to take a look at your drive times for this morning. so far, just the usual slow spot from tracy to dublin that will take
