avoid expanding this conflict, but after the houthis' relentless attack and refusal to heed repeated warnings, overnight the u.s. and allies fighting back with massive strikes. this morning the houthis are vowing revenge. overnight a stunning barrage by u.s. and british forces. a wave of tomahawk cruise missiles launched from a u.s. submarine and ships backed by fighter jets. the targets, the iran backed houthi rebels in yemen that have been attacking ships in the red sea for months now. the pentagon confirming the strikes backed by four u.s. allies, hit over 60 targets and 16 locations. destroying weapon, radar and surveillance systems and unmanned vehicles. >> clearly, the intent is for the u.s. and uk to take out any military capability the houthis might have to continue to harass shipping in the red sea. >> reporter: president biden saying in a statement that after weeks of global warnings to the houthis, these targeted strikes

are a clear message that the united states and our partners will not tolerate attacks on our personnel or allow hostile actors to imperil freedom of navigation. biden adding he will not delay further measures to protect our people. the houthis have launched at least 27 attacks claiming they are retaliating for israel's war with hamas. it's causing a costly disruption to shipping in the red sea, a vital route for billions in trade and estimated 15% of world commerce passes through the red sea. major shipping companies now forced to sail around africa to avoid the violence. >> we're gonna do what we have to to counter and defeat these threats the houthis keep throwing up on commercial shipping in the red sea. >> reporter: u.s. led retaliation coming days after the largest houthi assault yet, targeting american ships with drones and missiles. the rebel group still holds over two dozen hostages, taken after they brazenly hijacked this car

nebraska. this car on the side of the road. in northwest montana, heavy snow and high winds of up to 64 miles per hour threatening visibility. snow even reaching the southwest. residents in flagstaff arizona digging out after nearly 4 inches fell. in las vegas, palm trees dusted with snow. unrelenting hail pelting west little rock arkansas, the same system slamming california. watch this semitruck slowly sliding on an icy interstate 80 after its brakes froze. and as if the snow were not enough, many areas are preparing for the deep freeze to move in this weekend into next week. eva? >> alex perez, in the snow. the storm is bringing more heavy rain to the northeast, where rivers have finally started receding from the last storm. trevor ault is in hard hit

little fall, new jersey, with that. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, eva. so where i'm standing would not typically be in the passaic river but today it is. this river finally crested overnight in major flood stage. pretty aggressively spilling out into people's yards. there's a lot of roads flooded, too. this is just one river. there are flood watches in effect from north carolina all the way up to massachusetts. now those storms are going to hit the northeast. that is almost going to prolong this flooding to the passaic river in major flood stage, not just into the weekend but likely into next week. whit? >> all right, trevor ault for us. thank you so much. let's go to sam champion with a look at the weather to come. we were just talking about des moines. negative degrees. >> it's brutal there. it's gonna be. after this snow moves out, we've got blizzard warnings in parts of the country. look at the country. yesterday i said almost every state. america said, hold my coffee. look at this. it is every state, including

alaska and hawaii, that we've got watches and warnings. from blizzard warnings in iowa to these strong to severe storms. we've got a tornado watch now through the deep south. we've already seen the tornado warnings popping. some severe storm warnings popping. this will go until around 11. follow this path east and that goes into the carolinas with these strong storms. now that we know the storm, we've tightened up the zone where it could be some trouble. greenwood, birmingham, to tupelo, mississippi. i would say everywhere in the yellow, you've got to keep an eye on this. heavy rain moving into new england and the mid-atlantic. this is what we just saw, that flooding in new jersey. add an extra inch, maybe two inches of rain where i think we could go to three. by the time you get to connecticut into massachusetts. some very heavy rain there. then open up the arctic air, but we'll talk about that later. michael? >> thank you, sam. we are going to the latest on the race for the white house. just three days to go until the iowa caucuses and the first votes of the campaign. rachel scott is on the scene in

des moines for us this morning. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: michael, good morning to you. sam is absolutely right. it is brutal. this winter storm is throwing these republican candidates a major curve ball here in the final stretch with just three days to go until the iowa caucuses. former south carolina governor nikki haley and ron desantis forced to postpone or cancel some of their events today. a blizzard warning is in effect in iowa for much of the day, with wind gusts up to 45 miles an hour. all of that could not come at a worse time for these republican candidates that are still fighting to prove they are the best alternative to former president trump. he is 30 points ahead in the polls. he has spent more time in a courtroom than the campaign trail. his rivals are starting to sharpen their attack against him. ron desantis saying if trump is the nominee, then this election will be all about his legal issues. nikki haley insisting that chaos only follows the former president. across the board, the biggest challenge of all for these candidates might be getting voters to turn out on monday for caucus day. it is expected to be the coldest

iowa caucus on record, with temperatures below 16 degrees, guys. >> a major challenge to get people out there for the caucuses. rachel, thank you. as you said there, former president trump has spent more time in court this week than on the campaign trail. he attended closing arguments at his civil fraud trial in new york, getting into a clash with the judge in the case and is now awaiting the verdict. our senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is at the courthouse in downtown manhattan. aaron, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. the trial is now over so former president trump is waiting to find out if he has a future in the industry and the city that he used to create an image of himself as a titan of real estate. this morning donald trump is waiting for a judge to decide the outcome of the case that accused the former president of exaggerating his wealth on a decade worth of financial statements to get better terms on loans. in a dramatic conclusion to a contentious trial, trump defied the judge and vowed ahead with a terse statement he

was never authorized to give. i'm an innocent man, trump said. i have been persecuted by someone running for office. ignoring the judge's ground rules to stick to the facts, trump sat at the defense table and attacked the case saying what happened here is a fraud on me. he attacked leticia james. she sued me, he said, to try to get publicity. he attacked the judge complaining, you can't listen for one minute. the judge told trump's attorney, control your client. the judge finally holding up his phone to signal trump's time was up. >> this is a case that should have never been brought. i think we should be entitled to damages. >> reporter: the attorney general wants the judge to force trump to pay $370 million in penalties and to bar him from doing business in new york. >> no matter how powerful you are, no matter how rich you are, no one is above the law. >> reporter: her team arguing trump should be held accountable asking, would any of this persistent fraud have happened if it wasn't directed from the top by mr. trump?

there was no jury, so the judge is going to decide the verdict himself. he has already held trump liable and said he would decide by the end of the month whether to impose a fine or some other penalty that could significantly curtail trump's ability to conduct any commercial real estate transaction for the foreseeable future. eva? >> aaron katersky, thank you. we turn now to the second avalanche reported at the california ski resort where one person died in that sudden snow slide wednesday. matt rivers is there on the scene in olympic valley, california. matt, what are the conditions like right now? >> reporter: well, they're bad, eva. it means the danger levels remain high. we talk about the second avalanche not far from here palisades tahoe resort. that's the second in as many days. no one was injured there, but it comes one day after this avalanche. this is brand new video we have filmed from a chair lift going over the avalanche as it was sliding down the mountain, picking up skiers and snow

boarders as it went down the hill, killing one person, injuring several. i spoke to several survivors who all said they feared for their lives. there's another video we have showing a ski patroller treating a man with a broken leg as rescuers probed the ground trying to find more survivors. overnight another avalanche. this one near stevens peak in idaho. authorities say one man believed dead there, two more rescued during search and rescue efforts near that peak. michael? >> matt rivers, thank you for that. now the alarming triple threat across the country. vast majority of states are reporting high or very high levels of the flu, covid and rsv. morgan norwood is here now with more. good morning, morgan. >> good morning, michael. flu, covid-19, rsv. it's really going around. i feel for you if you are sick but if not, you likely know someone who is. that's because 38 states are reporting very high or high levels of respiratory illness. we really see this in the south where it's most severe. the spikes can strain emergency rooms.

let's talk about what's sending the most people to the er. that's going to be flu and covid-19. flu hospitalizations up 35%. the cdc believes flu infections will continue to grow. covid-19 hospitalizations, they've increased for eight weeks straight. recently jumping 20%. but still much lower than this time last year. finally, rsv, cases are still on the rise. many parts of the country it's dropping. infants and children under 4 are hospitalized with rsv more than any other age group. we are expecting another update from the cdc later today. either way, health officials want to continue to stress the importance of getting your updated flu and covid vaccines, as well as rsv shots. guys? >> very important there, morgan. thank you. we're going to turn now, the end of an era in the nfl. legendary head coach bill belichick is parting ways with the new england patriots after 24 seasons and 6 super bowls. will reeve is in foxborough, massachusetts for us with the

court of appeals is upholding a lower court's ruling that says the city cannot remove people from the sidewalk unless they are offered shelter, and there is space available. it means san francisco is still restricted when it comes to being able to do sweeps and encampments. governor newsom says the court's ruling, quote, will only create further delays and confusion. and he says he thinks the supreme court should weigh in on the matter. >> and right now, we're going to get a look at your traffic so far, traffic is flowing pretty smoothly, but there is a little bit of a backup here at the richmond-san rafael bridge. so we're showing you that video. it's about a three mile backup approaching the toll plaza. but overall no major delays. >> thank you. gloria. meteorologist drew tuma has a quick

personal story on gma. michael, we of course were all watching yesterday when you and your daughter isabella bravely shared her story of brain cancer. >> yeah. we've received so much love, so much concern, so much support, almost overwhelming. thank you to everyone out there. there were a lot of questions about her diagnosis and prognosis and treatment. >> she is going through all this. just 19 years old. >> a kid. >> her doctor at duke children's hospital and health center spoke to gma about the next phase of her treatment. let's take a look. this morning an outpouring of love and support for part of our gma family, michael and his daughter isabella strahan. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> after sharing her recent brain tumor diagnosis. >> i woke up probably like 1 p.m. i dreaded waking up. i was throwing up blood. my sister, i was like, hmm, this probably isn't good. so i texted her, who then

notified the whole family. >> and then that was when we decided you need to really get a thorough checkup. thank goodness for the doctor. i feel like the doctors saved her life. >> isabella under going surgery to remove the tumor the day before her 19th birthday. ♪ happy birthday to you ♪ six weeks of radiation treatment. [ bell ringing ] >> what's next for you as far as the treatment is concerned? >> i'm going to start chemotherapy the beginning of february at duke. that's my next step. i'm ready for it to start. that's one day closer to being over. >> now isabella's doctor at duke telling us her surgery was successful and the tumor hasn't spread. >> the critical thing is she found herself in the hands of an excellent surgical team, and she was able to obtain a complete resection of the tumor without injury to the back of the brain.

>> as she prepares for the next phase of her treatment, she's also preparing for a possible side effect to her future fertility. >> the ovaries are very sensitive to chemotherapy. so in isabella's case, before we started this, we did do fertility preservation and we have harvested some eggs from her ovaries so that she can have the opportunity to have kids herself if she ever chooses to do that as an adult. >> i know all that you're going through, your doctors, before starting the treatment, they had to talk to you about fertility. >> yeah. >> oh my goodness. not a conversation you were expecting. >> not at all. >> what was that like? >> it was definitely difficult. the process was -- it's painful. i got through it. it's tough but you definitely don't expect it. i don't think you expect any of this at 18, 19.

we are back now with our cover story. a new fda story says adhd prescriptions surged during the pandemic, particularly among women. our medical correspondent dr. darien sutton joins us. break down these studies. >> during the pandemic, many stay at home orders required people to stay out of their offices and classrooms, which is where you normally see a diagnosis of adhd get revealed. in this study, they looked at over 100 million prescriptions from 2018 to 2022. they saw significant increases over all for stimulant prescriptions. those numbers were more pronounced in adults. 20 to 39. a stimulant prescription of 30% and nonstimulant of 81%. despite this increase in demand we are still having issues with supply. >> to that point, we heard the reports of shortages.

where does that stand now? is it improving? >> shortage is not improving, unfortunately. it's been that way since 2022. an fda review found manufacturers were only making approximately 70% of the recommended quota. the reasons why includes a variety of things. pandemic stress, economic stresses. also simply staying at home causes increased risk of anxiety, depression. in spite of that, unfortunately, patients are not able to get the prescriptions they need because of difficulties with access. >> if you can't find what you need, what should you do? >> number one i think talk to your physician. as we were discussing before the break, there are other options that might be available to you. fda has approved new formulations of medications which are available. certain types of medications that are extended release. talk to your pharmacist. they might be able to be in touch with distributors. also talk about other options. maybe smaller doses which you might be able to take more of. larger doses which you might be able to cut down. then nonstimulant options. if you don't want to go the

the leftovers. depending on the portion your family eats this could stretch up to make 15 total portions which takes the cost down to about $8 a meal. but it is important do the math. we ordered the catering menu from a national chain and it ended up being more expensive than the single entree we ordered off the regular menu. i ordered this as a single entree. it's got double the amount of the chicken, double potato and bread. get this, it cost $4 less. this is $22 compared to $26 per plate of the catering meal. so you can actually split this in half and it would end up being $11 a plate. while this trend is about simplifying your meal planning, you do need to keep track of the dollars saved in addition to the time saved. now for this to work you really have to be a master of leftovers management. so a couple of things. usda says chicken can stay in the fridge once cooked for three

to four days. after that it needs to be frozen. if you're going to freeze some takeout meals, think about what you're freezing them in. you don't want to freeze them in these aluminum pans because it makes it so hard to microwave when you pull it out frozen. you may not want to freeze them in the plastic takeout containers. the best option is glass. if you have glass tupperware that's what you want to do. yes, you can freeze tacos. i had frozen tacos that i warmed up last night. they were delicious. >> love it. >> i'm a master of leftovers consumption. ♪ we could be heroes ♪ for blood donors is always great, but it's even greater now. >> great. thank you. >> the american red cross said it is experiencing a nearly 7,000 unit short fall between christmas and new year's day alone. every day they're responsible for collecting around 12,000 blood donation force patients in need, supplying approximately 2,500 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country. >> we hear all the time about people who come into the hospital bleeding, sometimes they require hundreds of units of blood, but they're able to survive because of blood donations. >> every donation critical. just one blood donation can save up to three lives, something brian boyle from maryland knows firsthand. he lost 60% of his blood in a near fatal car accident at 18 years old.

going chemotherapy. even burn victims and organ recipients. joining me is jody. good morning. >> good morning. >> reporter: she is director for the american red cross. every two seconds in this country someone is in dire need of blood. how much of an impact do blood drives like this one actually make? >> yeah, absolutely. so today we are expecting to see about 40 blood donors here at the donation center. every donation matters. we serve about 50 hospitals in the d.c. region. we are asking people to go out, make that appointment. we need blood donors now. >> reporter: you heard that. guys? >> all right. so we are on a roll. let's get to stephanie. you are at a blood drive in princeton, new jersey. this will surprise a lot of people, who have not been in bad weather lately. this bad weather is dropping donations as well, right? >> reporter: it certainly is, sam. this is why it's so important to donate when you can. the severe weather that's moved across the country has cancelled more than 90 blood drives.

not your average workout crew. one massachusetts peloton group is on a mission to pay it forward, starting a yearly tradition where they get together at a restaurant. everybody can do this for a meal. leave an extra generous tip. everybody can do this, too, to say thank you. when massachusetts native josh burnen set out to create a community to bring local peloton enthusiasts together, we wanted to do it with a purpose. >> people wanted to do more than just ride together. that helped build the community. >> he called the group wicked smart zone. josh said the 2,300 members ride, train and live by the motto do wicked good. >> do wicked good at work, school, wicked good while training. then take it a step further and do wicked good by giving back to your community. >> so they started an annual gathering with a charitable twist. each year members meet at a different restaurant for a meal and pool their money for a special tip for their servers. >> we thought it would just be

20 or whatever of us going out to dinner. the people on our group were like, can i venmo you? can i send you some more money? it just spiralled. serving people is challenging, so it's nice to let servers know that we care. >> last sunday about 40 members joined for a breakfast at red's kitchen and tavern, while others contributed from afar. >> i had just over 130 donations before i even went to the restaurant. >> the group leaving more than $7,000 for their two servers. >> are you kidding us? stop it. >> i couldn't even find the words to describe it. you are never expecting that. never. i'm a single mom. i was like, this is definitely going to help give me relief on the bills. >> the two servers sharing the wealth. >> we decided we were at the back of the house. >> i believe that when you have a platform, no matter how small or how big it is, you have the
