jackets. >> those are the tools some will need to get through this weekend's wet weather. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. a few showers will arrive tonight before the weekend storm gets here. live doppler seven is up and ready to track the rain right now. as you can see in these live pictures around the bay area, it's dry, yes, but not for much longer. >> this weekend's storm ranks level two on our exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel tracking what we can expect. sandy. >> yeah, we're going to see some downpours at times. dan and ana right now. let's take a look at live doppler seven. the showers out ahead of the storm have already begun along the northern california coast. it is a level two, a moderate strength storm that is developing in the pacific. now. the biggest concern is it is going to drench parts of the bay area. the moisture source extends all the way out towards hawaii and it is moving with a nice tropical tap

in the direction of california, northern california is going to get slammed by heavy rain and flooding here in the bay area. parts of the north bay will get a drenching as well. so tomorrow morning you will notice the rain moving in downpours. at times it continues through the afternoon and the evening hours. that two on storm impact scale will bring gusty winds. in addition to the downpours, flooding on roads and creeks, a live view from mount rose and you could s a few flakes flying around. but heavier snow is coming. winter storm warning 10 p.m. tonight until 4 a.m. sunday, 1 to 2ft of snow with gusty winds. hazards travel is expected. i'll be back with the storm concerns and the timeline line coming right up. >> dan okay sandy, thanks so much. you can track the forecast anytime with the same live doppler seven that sandhya uses every day. just search abc seven bay area in your device's app store to download it. now. the north bay is preparing to get the worst of this weekend's storm. >> let's go live to abc seven news reporter cornell bernard in san rafael for a look at how people are getting ready.

cornell >> hey there. i'm. yeah. p-g-and-e's says it's all hands on deck. we're here at the utilities san rafael yard, where extra crews will be on duty tomorrow for the storm, which could bring outages and flooding wipers. getrillioneady rain is returning this weekend, and firstrillionesponders in sonoma county are prepared for more scenes like this. flooding around the russian river valley. some roads may be impassable, even dangerous, to drive through . >> even a couple inches can disable your vehicle and send it floating down. you know who knows where. so be safe. turn around. >> we were there when fire station one took delivery of this new jet ski for the department's swiftwater rescue team on the russian river. >> we're a propelled boat, you know. >> can get stuck in some areas, and it can be low lying or have hazards. the personal watercraft can get through those areas quickly and help us do search. and then it will also be outfitted to do rescue as well. >> on wednesday, the santa rosa fire department posted on x that strong winds brought this tree

down into power lines on south rightrillionoad, knocking out power to about 300 homes. we see this weather hitting really hard in p-g-and-e's north coast, so we have activated three of our operational emergency centers. p-g-and-e's says it's ready to respond with extra crews and equipment if the power goes out during the storm. the utility also asking customers to be prepared charge up your cell phones now. >> if you do lose power, you can always charge your cell phone in your car. >> have an extra battery pack. um, check your flashlights. make sure your flashlights are working. >> have batteries ready? >> yes, a lot of rain. uh, a lot of bad weather coming. >> beth green says. garrett ace hardware in windsor is ready with all the things folks might need this weekend from sandbags to generators. even this super bright rain suit. >> we have plenty of tarps. we have plenty of battery bars and lanterns as well in case we have any power problems for when this big storm comes.

>> firstrillionesponders reminding us that last january, a woman from ukiah drove into floodwaters in sonoma county and tragically lost her life. the chp is asking drivers if you got to be on the road tomorrow, take it slow, make sure your wipers are good, good and drive very slowly on the highway because it's going to be wet. we're live in marin county tonight. cornell barnard, abc seven news. >> all right, cornell, thank you. >> all right, let's go now to the sierra, the palisades tahoe ski run, where that deadly avalanche struck wednesday, has reopened. resort officials say the ct 22 express run reopened to skiers and boarders this morning. that follows two days of avalanche mitigation work by crews, including controlled explosions. wednesday's avalanche killed one person, three other skiers were injured. another avalanche at palisades tahoe actually happened yesterday afternoon, though no one was trapped or injured in that. and some experts believe avalanches like those this week

in tahoe will become more common as the climate warms. however there is no clear evidence about what trends really might emerge, so it's not really known. we talked about avalanches and climate change today with san jose state meteorologist doctor craig clemens on our 3 p.m. program called getting answers. >> i, you know, i don't think we really have an answer to that. >> it potentially could main being that it changes the maybe if we get warmed it more warm days in the winter, it changes the surface of the snowpack. so when we do get heavier snow or, you know, a warm snow event that could trigger some more avalanches, but there isn't really any research linking climate change to. avalanche activity. avalanche activity is a function of our by our daily weather events and terrain conditions. so all right, you can watch interviews like that one every weekday. >> getting answers airs at 3 p.m. here on abc seven and wherever you stream. >> new at six. new details on the plane that crashed off half

moon bay in may of last year. low fuel pressure and a lost engine appear to be what caused the plane to crash into the ocean about four hours into a flight from santa rosa to honolulu. the coast guard released a photo of that partially submerged plane along with the preliminary accident report today. the crash killed the pilot and one passenger. neither their bodies nor the wreckage were ever recovered in san francisco, activists held what they're calling an emergency protest, calling to stop the us bombing of yemen. they gathered at the sf federal building in collaboration with several cultural advocacy groups. this action was in solidarity with palestinians, asking the biden administration to put a halt to a growing regional war. both the us and the uk carried out missile strikes against multiple how the targets this morning i an update tonight on a story closely followed by the abc seven news i-team today a san francisco judge sentenced joseph adam moore. >> he's the man who set up camp outside a school in san francisco's sunset district in

october and offered free fentanyl for first time users. he had a signed posted to that effect. moore received a year of formal probation with an individualized treatment program . he must also obey all laws and stay 100 yards away from the school and from a nearby fire station that had a previous stay away order for a jury convicted moore of committing a public nuisance. he has been released from custody. san jose police have made an arrest in the first homicide of the year. there police say it was an intentional hit and run at daetz canso drive and north first street. it's happened on wednesday night. a day later, they identified and arrested the suspect, michael mcnabb, in sacramento is where they found him. they have not found the car involved in the crime yet. they're looking for a 2017 infiniti qx30 suv. it's gray. the license plate is. eight tcv v123. >> new developments kelly-moore paints is out of business. yesterday we told you kelly

moore had decided to furlough 700 workers. the company now says it's simply out of money. all kelly moore stores are closed, effective immediately, but the company will maintain slim operations at its union city distribution facility to try to fill existing orders. do you know the name keith lee? the popular foodie made a much hyped bay area visit this week, but he cut his trip short because of some poor dining experiences and safety concerns. abc7 news reporter anser hassan went to one of the restaurants that lee visited to get their reaction. >> elise williams says it was a big deal when tiktok influencer and foodie keith lee made a stop at her restaurant, the luxe box, in west oakland. it was good for me as a mother to prove my kids right, but the bay area didn't seem like a big deal for lee. >> people were the bay were absolutely amazing and i'll never forget the hospitality and the love that you showed me. reason number one i truly don't believe the bay is a place for tourists right now. and that's what i was a tourist. the people in the bay are just focused on

surviving. >> lee says he wanted to try out some smaller establishments around the bay area, like lux box. williams served him jerk lamb basa fish, yams and macaroni. it was a hit, but lee announced on social media that he's cutting his trip short and allergic reaction. some bad food experiences and safety top his list of concerns. >> i definitely feel like we're all in survival mode trying to figure things out. the cost of living is extremely high. um, i think he hit it on the nose, but she adds, for those who live here, they know how to navigate their neighborhoods and communities. >> and despite the hardship, her hard work is paying off. today is the one year anniversary of her store, and she's turning a profit. i definitely struggle, they have their ups and downs, but i have a good support system. >> i have a partner. he has always helped me, my daughter and my children. they're my support system, so we struggle, of course, but we stick together. >> many have criticized lee's assessment of the entire bay area, based on just a few restaurants in neighborhoods, but he was impressed with the lock box. i left a $2,500 tip. >> i am taking my kids to hawaii

can remember a time when heroin was their biggest battle. >> when we use narcan with people on heroin, they would pop right up. it was amazing. it was a game changer. but then as the years progressed, they started lacing the heroin with fentanyl and then we started using two, three, four narcan since, like, what's going on here? >> fentanyl is 50 times more powerful than heroin. and it has transformed san francisco's streets. >> it's so different that people on heroin could so much somewhat function, you know, for the most part. but people on fentanyl are just they completely takes over their lives. >> and because it's so different, the deputy decides to take a different approach. >> we figured come from a position of compassion and care rather than incarceration. and that's how we get we build trust and we have people actually approaching us for a change rather than running away from us. >> and speaking of running, check out the shoes. it's a very

intentional choice. >> we decided to dress down to break that stigma of us and them . you know, i see look, i have a hoodie on. i have a baseball cap and, uh, people love my shoes. so that's a conversation piece i'm wearing air force ones today, so that helps people comment on my shoes. and then they say, oh, that's the guy with the shoes. >> and he says, being that guy with the shoes goes a long way. >> this makes a difference between walking by somebody you know, is your friend okay? oh they're okay. they're just sleeping, deputy. and then you could pass them by and they can be overdosing, whereas now they say, oh, deputy, i need your help. >> the deputy taking it up as his duty to protect the most vulnerable. >> somebody overdosing is a victim, you know, with substance abuse disorder. and i don't want it happening on my watch. if i can do anything, i'll do it. and, uh, i haven't lost anybody yet, so i think i'm doing okay. >> and the guy with the shoes

tomorrow. >> no rain downpours at times. winds are going to be gusty and there will be flooding on the roadways. it's the urban flooding that we're used to when too much rain falls at once and the drains can't handle it. so do look out for that. your smaller streams and creeks in your backyard will likely see rapid rises, which means flooding potential there as well. the russian river at hopland expected to possibly exceed flood stage sunday morning and may exceed flood stage. so stay tuned. here's a look at the storm concerns. so flooding once again urban flooding, high trees down a pretty high likelihood. power outages. it's in that medium category. and sierra snow high category. so here's what you need to know. it's a warm storm. it's not a cold storm. which is why the snow levels are going to go in the sierra from 3500ft tonight to getting up there into the 6000 foot range. here is a look at that storm on live doppler seven. and it's got quite the moisture plume. it is going to drench much of the

pacific northwest with heavy rain. and the north coast now part of the north bay, will have a chance of seeing some excessive rain right now on live doppler seven. locally, we're seeing just a lot of cloud cover that will change san jose camera. it's a really quiet view right now. 53 degrees in san jose, low 50s from san francisco to oakland, san mateo, half moon bay as well. lovely view from our emeryville camera. looking back towards the city and sutro tower 45 in petaluma. it's in the upper 40s from santa rosa to napa to fairfield. 50 degrees in livermore for tonight. it's not going to get as cold as it was this morning. some of our official reporting sites this morning in the low to upper 30s. so here's a live view from santa cruz camera the week ahead. level two storms soaks us tomorrow. the winds ramp up strongest in the afternoon and evening and it is a chilly start to martin luther king junior day. but a dry day flood watch from the north coast. all the way down towards parts of lake and mendocino counties. 10:00 tonight until sunday morning. that's where they're going to

see the highest likelihood of some pretty big issues as heavy rain is expected. parts of the north coast looking at up to a half a foot of rain. we are in that marginal category. the green there for parts of the north bay of seeing excessive rain. so just be alert. listen to your emergency officials in case things start to get out of control. in the north bay, especially the sonoma county coast. so saturday morning you will notice some scattered showers moderate up to the north. and then it gets heavier as we head towards 10 a.m. in the north bay, you are seeing some moderate pockets of rain. elsewhere. the rainfall intensity will be heavy at times. it turns to more scattered. and then here comes another batch of heavy rain. so don't be letting your guard down because you look outside and there's just a few showers because this is a warm storm. it holds much more moisture than a colder storm. so it will soak us from time to time. sunday morning there will be still some scattered showers early on, and then that system is gone. rainfall projections highest in

the north bay. you're looking at 1 to 3in plus other parts of the bay area, anywhere from about a half an inch to an inch. and i will tell you, the computer models, as we get closer, tend to go lower on some of these rain totals. i don't buy it, so just keep that in mind. winds will be gusting uh- 3:00 in the afternoon, 20 to 25 miles an hour over 30 miles an hour in the evening hours, and then getting up over 40 miles an hour. this is why you could see some trees going down and a few power outages. just something to keep in mind. 30s and 40s on your morning temperatures it is going to be a wet saturday start a stormy day pretty much for your saturday afternoon. you're looking at highs in the 50s. keep the rain gear handy. if you do have outdoor plans. sunday is a better day to be outside the accuweather seven day wet and gusty. tomorrow with that level two storm, we get a break sunday afternoon through martin luther king junior day and then another weaker system comes in midweek. ama and dan. >> all right, sandhya, thank you.

i'm adam schiff, and i approve this message. nasdaq showed the biggest gain for the week at 3.1. here's a closer look at the numbers today. the dow was down 18 points to close at 37,592, while the nasdaq gained two points. the s&p added three points. some americans will get their student loans canceled next month as president biden accelerates his new plan. cancellation was set to begin in july. under the new save repayment plan. it's being rolled out earlier to provide

stacked shipping containers. evidently are not enough. now you see, berkeley has installed razor wire that you're looking at here on top of the barricades at people's park. the university says it's another security measure while they wait for construction to begin on a new housing project for students, abc seven news reporter ryan curry is in berkeley with the story. >> well, did shut and stacked on one another. >> it's now been over a week since workers installed these cargo containers. people cannot get in to people's park. we asked berkeley residents what it looks like to them. it's so big and so aggressive. >> i mean, essentially what's been put up here is a border wall. >> there are lights and cameras on the side, security on every corner, plus this razor wire on

the west side of the structure. the university says it's a security measure. >> they they definitely wanted to quell any, you know, potential resistance. >> lisa teague used to be unhoused and lived in the park for years. the historic park was home to many like her. >> it is such a pivotal place in the history of berkeley, in the history of student resistance. in the history of antiwar movements. >> the university claims the encampment led to an increase in crime. protesters have constantly pushed back against building on the park. police made several arrests during the day. the containers went up. you see berkeley not available for an on camera interview today, but they did tell me the reason why they put the wiring up around the park is because of the building next to it. they don't want anyone to go from the roof of that building onto the container and then into the park. the symbolism of this, of having this in berkeley is kind of astounding, but what does it

enclosing and what is it keeping out, i think is the issue. harvey smith is one of the leaders of a group challenging the university's ability to build a people's park, he says new housing should have been built elsewhere. >> it would have been completed by now, or nearly completed if they would have picked one of those sites. uh. what they've done is totally irrational. >> al smith and his group are looking into whether the school is legally allowed to put up razor wire. uc berkeley, meanwhile, cannot begin construction until a decision is made by the state supreme court. they've said they're confident the court will rule in their favor in berkeley, ryan curry abc seven news at los angeles to the list of california cities now searching for its next police chief, michael moore announced today he'll retire from the los angeles police department at the end of february. >> moore has been chief of lapd since 2018 and a member of the department for more than 40 years. los angeles joins oakland and san jose in the hunt for a new chief. demolition of a los

altos strip mall that caught fire on christmas morning is delayed indefinitely. there's been no reason given or timeline for how long the delay will be taking down the parts at risk of collapse means fire investigators can finally get inside to figure out exactly how it started. it also means part of el camino real near san antonio road will be able to reopen. that's expected to happen after the demolition work is complete. >> it's been exactly a week since a door plug fell out of an alaska airlines jet mid-flight. the plane, a boeing 737 max nine, took off from portland international airport in oregon last friday, and less than 20 minutes later, it was back on the ground with a hole in the side of the fuselage. this is new video from inside flight 1282, last week. you can look right out through that hole in the plane. the detached door plug was later found in someone's backyard and tonight it's arrived at the now ssb in washington, dc. here's a picture of it all boxed up. the ntsb is

investigating the accident. meanwhile, the faa plans to audit boeing production and manufacturing just yesterday, the faa announced an investigation to determine if boeing failed to ensure its planes comply with the approved design. boeing 737 max nine planes will remain grounded for the foreseeable future. the only two us carriers that use max nine planes united and alaska. earlier today, we spoke live with katie nastro, a travel expert, to discuss what happens after the plane is cleared to fly. >> if you are scheduled to fly on this specific specific boeing max nine and don't really feel comfortable, even if it does get the okay to fly again, you can actually have to call alaska and have them change. rebook you on a new flight on a different type of aircraft, or get a refund back to your credit card. >> flightaware says today is the highest number of flight cancellations in six months. more than 2200 flights in and out or within the u.s. have been

canceled today. it's partly because of the grounding of the 737 max nine planes, but also because of severe weather. chicago's o'hare and midway airports were the most affected. this weekend's planned closure of interstate six, 80, in pleasanton has been canceled due to the rain. >> that level two storm sandy has been telling us about. caltrans needs to repair deteriorating pavement on the highway. the closure will be rescheduled for sometime in february. we'll keep you updated as soon as we get a new date. king tides made a return to the bay area this week. the exceptionally high tides are also expected next month, and experts are using this as an opportunity to study the effect they could have. perhaps for years to come. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes has more on what we're seeing this week, and could see long terme. >> it's captivating. video a tide so high that it's creeping onto the walkways of san francisco's embarcadero. the sights are all thanks to king tides. there are about 1 to 2ft higher than your average high tide, and there happening across

california right now, experts at the california king tides project say that so far, the king tide seen on thursday and friday have been moderate, but they're giving a glimpse of sea level rise. a larger problem that can be traced back to burning fossil fuels. jeremy smith is a coastal engineer with the california coastal commission. he says that the first part in determining how to deal with climate change is working to understand how it impacts communities where flooding might occur and where how it's going to impact our sort of infrastructure systems. smith says. sea level rise could impact those infrastructure systems and in turn, impact communities that aren't even by the water. >> heavy rainfalls that rain needs to get to the low spot. and so when that rain is draining on our streets and through our storm drains, a lot of a lot of times those storm drains outfall into the bay or into the ocean. and so if you have a higher sea level, that can sort of slow down, how fast the storm drains can carry that water. >> now experts are using the king tides to help better determine sea level rise. smith says pictures sent to the
