time is arriving tonight in the bay area. some places are already seeing rain and a lot more is on the way. good evening . >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. might be a good idea to just curl up and stay inside tomorrow, because it is going to be a stormy saturday. >> yes. and we could see some minor flooding. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with a first look at the forecast. sandhya >> yeah, that's right dan and it's going to be a soaker for your saturday, especially in the north bay. i want to show you that level two storm. it is moderate in strength. you can see that moisture plume extends well out towards hawaii. and that is heading in our direction. the storm is already getting closer. we're seeing those showers up along the northern california coast, snow showers in the mountains and

here in the bay area, we've seen a couple of showers move through as well. right now you will notice those showers are just southeast of livermore. and we're going to continue to see the rainfall picking up as you are sleeping. heading in towards tomorrow morning. as we go, hour by hour, you will notice thatrillionain starts to pick up in intensity in the north bay. 9 a.m. pretty much all areas are getting wet. we have the wet weather continuing off and on through the afternoon and in the evening we will have some more downpours. so it's a level two on our exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale, moderate strength storm rain, downpours at times, gusty winds, flooding on the roadways and minor flooding on small streams and creeks. as you look at a live picture from, um, the sierra, yes, they have snow on the ground and a lot more is coming. a winter storm warning until 4 a.m. sunday. heavy snow is expected 1 to 2ft, with those gusts up to 55 miles an hour. snow levels will be rising so travel is going to be hazardous. here's a look at your tahoe

now at lake tahoe from our camera at zephyr cove. not a bad night so far, but expect that to change with a winter storm warning in effect and lasting into sunday morning. as sandhya just mentioned, probably a tough sledding if you're trying to get up there tomorrow night might not be very easy to get to the sierra. that means if you're even thinking about heading up to the mountains, be prepared for some nasty conditions on interstate 80 and highway 50 as well. and you can check out the abc seven bay area app for the latest on weather conditions and to access the same doppler seven that sandhya and our weather team use, search abc seven bay area in your devices app store to download it. >> we have a quick update on palisades tahoe, where a bay area man was killed on wednesday in an avalanche. the ski run where that avalanche happened reopened today. crews spent the past two days taking measures to prevent another one that included using controlled explosion. there was another avalanche at palisades tahoe yesterday afternoon, but no one was trapped or injured. new developments with san francisco, his ongoing legal battle to clean up homeless encampments,

the supreme court has agreed to hear the case. currently, a lower court ruling prevents sweeps unless shelter is available. abc seven news reporter tara campbell joins us now. and this is something that affects not just san francisco. tara >> yeah. ama, one expert told me leaders across the western u.s. have been crying for help trying to understand their options when it comes to homeless encampments , and today's announcement could bring them one step closer. government has a responsibility for providing basic, dignified shelter and other alternate lives to encampments. >> individuals, in my view, have a responsibility for coming indoors and taking advantage of those alternatives to san jose mayor matt mehan is talking about the issue at the heart of a case. >> now being taken up by the supreme court. it stems from litigation in oregon, where two homeless people challenged an ordinance in the city of grants pass banning people from camping in public spaces. an appellate court siding with the duo, saying it violates the constitution's limit on cruel

and unusual punishment, adding you can't stop people from sleeping in a public space if you don't provide an alternate live. >> san francisco has struggled in recent years with some very significant unresolved questions that were created by the grants pass case. san francisco among the many local governments urging the supreme court to weigh in, we joined cities up and down the west coast throughout the ninth circuit, who do think that the decisions that have been on the books by the ninth circuit have really hamstrung our ability as cities to grapple with the intense crisis we're seeing on our streets. >> governor newsom, also responding friday with a statement saying in part, the supreme court can now correct course and end the costly delays from lawsuits that have plagued our efforts to clear encampments and deliver services to those in need. >> the supreme court taking up this case seems unnecessary, cory. >> meanwhile, homeless advocates say the supreme court shouldn't be getting involved. >> it's deeply troubling that

that, uh, um, the supreme court may allow jurisdictions to find new ways to punish people. we're not going to punish and fine and jail our way out of our, um, homelessness crisis. >> david levine is a professor at uc law, san francisco. >> so the fact that the supreme court took it up, it doesn't mean that there will really be a change of what the rules are right now, but rather i think the cities and other localities will feel as if there's a chance that they will be less handcuffed in the future. >> now, the now, the supreme court could hear this case as early as april with a decision. decision then at the end of june . meanwhile, san francisco is also battling a lower court case over sweeping homeless encampments. dan and oma okay, tara, thanks very much. >> in the east bay, uc berkeley has installed razor wire on the shipping container barricades surrounding people's park. the university says the barbed wire is a security measure to prevent access to the park from an

adjacent building. a people made several arrests. police made several arrests since the containers were put up last week . but advocates for the park say it's just another measure to help the university get closer to building some much needed student housing. the symbolism of this, of having this in berkeley, um, is, is kind of astounding. >> but what does it enclosing and what is it keeping out i think is the issue. >> protesters say they will challenge the legality of the barbed wire in court. the university says it is confident the court will rule in its favor in san francisco, activists held what they're calling an emergency protest, calling to stop the u.s. bombings in the middle east. yesterday, the military launched strikes against iranian backed militants in yemen from yemen to palestine, imperial ism is the pride. protesters gathered at the san francisco federal building in collaboration with several cultural advocacy groups. this action was also in

solidarity with palestinian is asking the biden administration to put a halt to the growing regional war. >> new at 11 a show of unity tonight as christian and jewish leaders gathered at congregation emanu-el in san francisco for an interfaith exchange in memory of doctor martin luther king junior. this is the 37th year the groups have come together, and as abc seven news reporter tim johns tells us, with everything going on in the world right now, they feel the gathering is more important than ever. see carolyn ussé pray she for almost four decades, the members of congress nation, emmanuel and the third baptist church have gathered together in song and in prayer every mlk day weekend. >> this is what the world needs to see. there's too much division in too much hate. >> the gathering brings together people both young and old, from across san francisco. so the idea behind it, an interfaith and intercultural exchange between two minority communities to better understand one another, all of it in

remembrance of the life and legacy of doctor martin luther king jr. >> more people want to be together and to listen to each other's stories and to be there for one another than not the connection between the black and jewish communities here in the u.s. extends far beyond just third baptist church, and congregation emanuel, though it's actually a relationship that goes back decades. >> reverend amos brown is the head of the third baptist church. he says jewish americans were instrumental in assisting the black community during the civil rights movement, and even helped found the naacp back in the early 1900s. we have a commonality of experiencing, of oppression because of our race, because of our religion and that commonality has brought us together. the weekend features two events. this first one at a local synagogue friday night for shabbat services, and the second on sunday at third baptist for a church service. although long popular among many members of

737. max, nine took off from portland international airport in oregon last friday. less than 20 minutes later, it was back on the ground with a hole in the side of the fuselage. now this is new video from inside flight 1282. last week. you can look right out through the hole in the plane. the detached door plug was later found in someone's backyard, and tonight it's arrived at the ntsb in washington. here's a picture of it all boxed up. the ntsb, of course, is investigating this accident. >> researchers at stanford are developing a universal vaccine to prevent the next worldwide pandemic before it even happens. experts are imagining what it would have been like if we could have avoided covid altogether. fighting off new infections, using different immunities in a way, it was too late for the covid pandemic. >> but i do think that it is

timely. in a sense, it's stimulated a whole new field, uh, that god forbid, if we have another pandemic, that this should then be in prime time for then traditional science utilizes antibodies or t cells that remember specific mix of viruses introduced by vaccines to fight off infection. >> the hope is we will be able to boost our innate immune system to fight off more kinds of illnesses, the federal government's long standing restrictions on cannabis use may be coming to an end soon, according to a report released by the new york times, federal researchers are recommending marijuana be removed from the nation's most restrictive drug category. the report says cannabis is less likely to be abused and can have potential medicinal benefits. the federal government has classified marijuana as a schedule one drug since 1970. all right. >> in the south bay tonight, it is quite the scene as thousands of people are dressing up in some pretty wild costumes. they're out on the prowl. they're in town for a convention

called further confusion or furqan, and it's expected to draw thousands of people. so what is it exactly? abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez. people in fur suits are taking over downtown san jose. >> the annual fur con is underway at the mchenry convention center, one, two, three francis wong with visit san jose said convention comeback is on the right track. >> the convention center is bookend by the marriott and the hilton and those two are sold out. but they also have other hotels all around downtown that they're also booking in. so they're spill over. >> two conventions are booked this weekend. a volleyball tournament and further confusion . furqan drawing people from all over the world to stay and dine locally. >> the more events we have and book in san jose, the better it is for the rest of the community. the event here has been going on for 21 years, but it started back in 1999 when they had about 700 attendees. >> now it's up to 5000. the vice

about the building, but it is a powerful statement that arts and culture matter. arts and culture deserve a permanent space in the community and in the city, and our artists are truly anchors for our community. >> the space will feature international exhibitions and educational programs and all sorts of arts focused events. that's great. it is interesting. >> okay, let's go back to the weather because we've got a pretty good storm on the way. >> yes. is it pretty much a washout tomorrow? sandhya >> i would stay inside on that. and dan, a good day to be inside tomorrow. and then on sunday you can take your plans outside. so here is your storm alert. it is going to be wet and windy tomorrow. watch out for standing water on the roads, especially if you're driving around because you have to. there may be some downed trees, reduced visibility , and just a reminder, wipers on, headlights on. this pattern is going to continue through early sunday morning. so that's just one thing you need to keep in mind on live doppler seven,

you can see this moisture plume extending well out over the pacific as a warm storm is beginning to exert itself across parts of northern california. so out ahead of the storm, we are seeing those showers we've had a few showers move through here in the bay area, but this is the light stuff. heavier stuff is still coming and as we take a look at your temperatures, the good thing is it's not going to be as cold as it was this morning. we had some low 30s in our coldest spots this morning and some frost, but tomorrow morning not as low thanks to all the cloud cover temperatures right now, 40s and 50s. a live view from our emeryville camera. all is calm right now. that changes tomorrow as a level two storm. so us winds will ramp up strongest in the late afternoon and early evening, and martin luther king junior day is going to be chilly in the morning, but it's a dry day for your outdoor activities. level two storm moves in tomorrow, though. out ahead of it. we're seeing those showers right now. this is going to be a moderate strength storm. rain downpour at downpours at times, gusty winds, flooding on

the roadways and smaller streams and creeks. a flood watch up for the north coast all the way down to parts of mendocino and lake counties until 1 a.m. sunday, as they are expecting excessive rain. and here's a look at that. now, some of this spills over into the north bay, so it's a marginal risk for excessive rain in the north bay. they could see 3 to 4in up in the wettest spots up there. as we go hour by hour tomorrow morning 5:00. pretty early on. it's wet, moderate to heavy rain starts to move in at 9 a.m. into the north bay and then sliding southward, and then for the afternoon you get those scattered showers and you might think, oh, we're okay. no not quite, we're not done. some heavy rain comes through saturday night. as you will notice, between 7 and 9 p.m. it is a slow mover, so at 1130 you're still getting soaked in the east bay, the santa cruz mountains, and then early sunday this system starts to wind down. and the rest of your sunday is fine. now, rainfall projections with this storm, most of you are

going to be in that half an inch to an inch and a half category. but places like ukiah, close to two inches uh, 3 to 4in, well to the north, santa cruz mountains, an inch of rain. i do want to point out san jose may be in the rain shadow, which means less than 2/10 of an inch. when all is said and done, the winds will pick up close to 30 miles an hour in cal stoga middletown, just above that tomorrow afternoon and then tomorrow evening. look at that. over 40 mile an hour winds that could take down some trees. so just be aware of that. could cause a few outages, 30s and 40s on your morning temperatures. you will need the rain gear for your saturday. hang on to it all day long because you will notice the afternoon will still be wet. the highs will be in the 50s. the accuweather seven day forecast. it's a two for tomorrow uh- sunday, a chilly start after the early morning showers and a few clouds, and then martin luther king junior day is really dry for the holiday, but it will be cold and frosty in the morning. fog on tuesday. cloudier skies wednesday a level one system moves in and then we're going to

learning portion sizes, we're doing yoga, hiking, mindfulness, and then we also immerse in the bay every day. they have seven practice swims, and then they finish the week with a swim in alcatraz. diabetes is plaguing our country, and as lakota people, we have the highest diabetes rate, the highest, um, heart disease. we always have to think about the future and the generations and how we're-- uh, you know, how we cook. their formula works. you have six days of preparation, and those six swims, um, acclimate you to the cold into the salt water, and so, um, you're ready. we call 'em swim angels. the swim angels are right there with the swimmer. my swim angels, you know, were so encouraging and so helpful. it seems crazy, but it's really not when you look at all the support that you get.

♪♪ i have never wanted to impose customs, like saying, "this is the way you--you have to do it." it's something that's grown organically, and i think from the very start, people wanted to smudge, and i-i love it. i love it, but i want always ownership with it. i love seeing people come from within themselves and reconnect with those really powerful spiritual lines that will sustain the next generations, too. i feel like it brought us into, like, this sacred spiritual mindset to help us get through the swim, because i feel like the swim is really powerful and sacred in that way.
