rain and bracing for the worst of it. but let's begin with abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian tracking the conditions right now. hi, spencer. hello, dion. >> well, right now the north bay is getting the worst of it, and it's going to get even worse still in the north bay and other parts of the bay area as well. here's a look at live doppler seven. you can see that we have rain scattered all over the bay area, but the steadiest rain right now is in the north bay and as you look at our looping image with the oh well, i just skipped over it. so go to the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. this is a level two storm. most of the day. the rain has been relatively light, but it's going to get heavier tonight. the ground is saturated. we'll have some gusty wind and some occasional downpours. thus, the impact of this storm will certainly be level two when we go to the forecast animation starting at 6 p.m. between 6 and 7, we'll see an eight. rather, we'll see the rain getting much heavier starting in the north bay, which is where cornell is right now, and it will start swinging southward and eastward, covering all parts of the bay area by late tonight, 10 or 11:00 after

midnight, we'll see the rain tapering off, giving way to just a few light scattered isolated showers by early tomorrow morning. i'll have closer look at this a little bit later, dion. >> all right. sounds good. spencer. thanks to the north bay now where the storm arrived this morning and many folks were ready for a drenching. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is live for us in petaluma. with how folks are coping. good to see you don't have an umbrella right now. >> hey, dion. yes. so far, so good here we are seeing a slight break in the rain, but lots of umbrellas up all over town. and like spencer says, more rain is on the way. and folks around here, well, they're ready for it . the rain took sonoma county by storm saturday. windshield wipers getting a workout on very wet roads. >> this is what we like to see. nice clean drain. >> taylor fry is making sure every storm drain in downtown santa rosa is clear and ready for a downpour. >> but yeah, we're doing a great

job. downtown parks is killing it. it's clean. >> the city worker says, with more rain coming, there's no time to waste. >> storm drains not filled with leaves. so streets aren't going to flood. the water will be able to get down into the storm drains and out to the creek in petaluma. >> neighbors living on wyndham way thought their street was flooding from the storm, but all this water was actually caused by a water main break, which took several hours for crews to repair. >> the fireman was banging on my door saying, if you want a car to drive later, you'll have to move it down the street because the street is going to be closed and uh- because a water main broke. so i started filling the bathtub in the sink and uh, shortly thereafter the water turned off in san rafael. >> umbrellas are up for many. the rain is a welcome sight. >> i think we need the rain, but maybe not all at once. i'm happy that we have it and this year's been relatively dry so far, so p-g-and-e's says it's adding

extra crews this weekend to respond to possible outages. >> they ask customers to be ready. >> charge up your cell phones now if you do lose power, you can always charge your cell phone in your car, have an extra battery pack. >> um, check your flashlights. >> make sure your flashlights are working, have batteries ready. >> in san anselmo, we found christian santana smoothing some fresh concrete in the rain after it got damaged overnight. not what you want to be doing today, i guess. right >> but i wasn't planning on doing this today. but it is what it is. >> getting word that a p-g-and-e's is responding to some power outages across the bay area in the north bay, about 100 in sonoma county, 300 in humboldt county. and we're getting word about a larger outage in the east bay in oakland affecting about 1200 customers. p-g-and-e's says it's working hard to restore the power. tonight, the chp asking drivers, take it easy out there because it's going to be wet. live in petaluma, cornell

bernard abc seven news. all right. >> and i know you will. keep us posted. cornell. thank you. in the sierra, they are expecting to get about 1 to 2ft of fresh snow by tomorrow. today, the sierra avalanche center issued a backcountry avalanche warning for the central sierra through 6 p.m. tomorrow, taking a live look at the conditions from our camera at zephyr cove. this is the south end of lake tahoe, about three miles outside of state line on the nevada side, where you can see a little bit of wave activity. there certainly looking gray. the calm before the storm earlier today, this was the scene along i-80 in truckee as crews with snow plows worked to clear the freeways and streets. caltrans is reminding anyone heading to the sierra to expect delays. right now, chain controls are required for all vehicles except four wheel drives with snow tires. as the weather woes stretch coast to coast, frigid temperatures across the country are having a major impact on everything from nfl playoffs to the presidential election. reporter rick

damigella has details. >> old man winter is roaring its frosty head across the united states, 35 states face weather advisories or warnings from storm systems stretching from california to maine. back to back winter storms are bringing life threatening wind chills and heavy snow across the midwest. >> buying some salt for my driveway so it doesn't get too icy, got shovels and gloves and boots and yeah, i'm ready for it. >> more than 240 daily cold temperature records could be tied or broken across the u.s. through tuesday. the weather is also wreaking havoc on the nfl playoffs. new york governor kathy hochul announced that sunday's bills steelers game in buffalo has been postponed. the nfl has agreed with our assessment that we need to postpone tomorrow's playoff game until 4:30 p.m. monday afternoon, and with just days to go to the iowa republican caucus, candidates are urging supporters to brave the weather conditions and support them.

long time. but that also means that there is a light out that is going to come to us. >> people who attended the event also spoke about battling stigmas and coming together to combat the hurt and pain in their neighborhoods, as multiple formal complaints have now been filed against the oakland unified school district for allegations of anti-semitism, one of the complaints outlines four separate incidents at fremont high bret hart, middle and montera middle schools. according to lawyers who filed the complaint. the district has begun an investigation. this all comes as the publication j. weekly reports that more than 30 jewish families have left the district due to concerns of anti-semitism. we reached out to the district for comment, but a spokesperson said they do not comment on pending legal matters . a gathering today at the port of oakland to protest the u.s. support of israel's military involvement in palestine. organizers say aid supplied by

the u.s. has directly contributed to the humanitarian crisis in gaza. over a thousand people blocked access to the port early this morning and again this afternoon, the protesters say the port of oakland is used to ship military equipment to israel. well, more flaring at yet again at chevron's refinery in richmond today. it was a level one incident, the lowest reportable level, according to contra costa county health. it lasted about 33 seconds at around 1250. this afternoon. the same thing happened there just yesterday, which is the video you are seeing here. chevron is investigating the cause. there is no health risk to the public at this time. the refinery is already under investigation for a list of violations in the past couple of months. and with that, stay with us. w

known the emeryville based company is coming off of a year of high profile misses at the box office, including the latest indiana jones film, the marvels, and the animated film wish. last summer, pixar's parent company, disney, laid off more than 7000 employees. disney is also the parent company of abc seven. in san francisco. could it be another sign of decline in the city's tourism industry? the chronicle is reporting that the hilton financial district on kearny street is the latest hotel to default on its mortgage . the 544 room hotel is right

near chinatown's portsmouth square. the hotel's owner has proposed a loan modification agreement which is under review. the paper reports that hotel occupancy fell 88% in the third quarter last year, compared to the year before, and revenue was down more than $12 million. employees at the tesla plant in fremont are talking about joining a union, and today activists held a rally to make their case as workers gathered outside to call out tesla for a history of discrimination at the facility. they also spoke in support of striking workers in sweden, where about 130 employees walked off the job demanding a union contract. tesla's fremont factory employs about 20,000 workers. some have already said they are interested in being represented. we need to build union rights worker rights for workers here at fremont, where so many workers have been fired. >> we're here on mlk day where there systemic racism, discrimination.

level one for much of the day because the rain has been relatively light, but it has saturated the ground. so now any additional rain on top of it, which is likely to be heavier this evening, will have an impact at the level two. >> that makes sense. >> so i call it the storm impact scale. so here's a look at what's happening right now on live doppler seven. we have fairly widespread rain now, but again much of it is light except up in the northern most part of our viewing area in northern sonoma county, where we've got some downpours right now and the rain is rather widespread. and on the satellite radar composite image, you can see the pattern with waves or bands of rain swinging down from our northwest and pushing southeastward. so that's why the north bay is getting the first uh. well the first dose of this rainfall, the first drenching right now the winds are beginning to pick up just a little bit. it's breezy, but not very gusty, although we do expect gustier wind later in the evening. so let's take a look at current temperature readings as we look across the embarcadero 54 degrees here in san francisco. oakland 5357 at both hayward and san jose, mid 50s also at san mateo and half

moon bay. you can see it's wet at the golden gate and it's going to get wetter there very shortly. as thatrillionain is sweeping through the north bay right now, 56 at the moment at santa rosa, mid 50s at petaluma, napa, concord, livermore, fairfield, the cool spot at 46 degrees. and these are our forecast headlines tonight. rainy breezy with occasional downpours tomorrow and monday which is martin luther king junior day partly cloudy and drier. but the remainder of the week is going to be wet and unsettled as more rain will develop and move in by midweek. so moving along, taking a look at the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale once again, current storm is a level two storm, so for tonight, the remainder of the night rain steady at times, occasional heavy downpours, gusty wind and there may be flooding on roads and creeks. so bear that in mind if you're going to be out. here's the forecast animation between six and 8 p.m. we'll see some of that heavier rain that's moving into the north bay right now. swinging southward down to the golden gate. and then down into the south bay and over to the east bay. and by midnight or so,

we'll see the storm winding down just a bit. and for the remainder of the overnight period, we'll just have isolated showers, some of which may linger into early tomorrow morning. rainfall totals by 7:00. tomorrow morning will range anywhere from about a quarter of an inch to three quarters of an inch, generally, san ramon likely likely to get just over an inch and way up north. at ukiah, we expect well over one inch of rain. meanwhile, it's snowing in the sierra. winter storm warning is in effect there until 4 a.m. tomorrow, and most locations can expect about 6 to 14in of new snow with wind gusts up to 60mph. obviously, travel will be difficult overnight. low temperatures as the rain tapers off mainly upper 40s to about 50 degrees. highs tomorrow, generally in the upper 50s to about 60, so not quite so chilly as the last few days have been. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. early morning showers tomorrow, then giving way to some partial clearing monday. mlk day will be a dry day with a mix of clouds and sun. tuesday rain returns and showers linger into wednesday morning, so level one storm those two days. partly cloudy,

nfl playoffs started today as the top seed in the nfc. the niners earned a well earned week off their opponent will not be decided until possibly as late as monday night's eagles. bucs game, which we'll see right here on abc seven. who does linebacker fred warner want to play next weekend? how about nobody? >> i'm excited to watch it. as a as a football fan, excited to watch and obviously seeing who we play. but but um, i hope everybody loses. you know i hope everybody loses. and then who knows. and then we won't have to play. i'm just kidding. give them the trophy now. >> uh, first game of the weekend. former niners defensive coordinator demeco ryans and the texans hosting the browns. texans rookie quarterback c.j. stroud threw three first half touchdown passes. the last to the stanford man dalton schultz. texans up 2414 at the half. third quarter same score. here comes damico's defense taking control. browns quarterback joe flacco in trouble and then threw it up. and it's stephen nelson picking it off. picks up some

lake tahoe. this video was shot by a woman named danielle, who was on a ski and snowboard vacation with her family. now on the very last run yesterday afternoon at heavenly near the powder bowl chairlift, she and her group came across this ice bear. danielle told me a stranger tried to approach the bear and that's when it made a run for it. we'll have much more of this wild encounter and a
