conditions as we speak. spencer okay, dion. >> it's wet and getting wetter rapidly. here's a look at live doppler seven. once again, you can see the heaviest rain right now is still in the north bay. becoming more widespread though and moving southward. so we're all going to feel the impact of this rain sometime tonight. this has been the pattern throughout the day and now into the evening. the bands of rain are moving down from the northwest, pushing to the southeast. so let's take a look at our exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. this is a level two storm. it has felt like a level one for much of the day, because the rain has been relatively light up until now, but the ground is saturated. so now as the rain gets even heavier, along with gusty wind and downpours, it's trust me, it's a level two. so here's the forecast animation starting at 6 p.m. and taking us to 8 p.m. when you'll see the rain. the heavy rain becoming steadier and more widespread. and then 9 p.m. 10 p.m. pretty much the same picture, although it will start winding down a little bit in the north bay around 10 p.m. not until after midnight will the entire bay area see the rain beginning to lose its intensity

and breaking up into isolated showers. meanwhile over in the sierra, the snowstorm is underway and a winter storm advisory or actually a warning in effect until 4 a.m. a closer look at that and our local forecast a little bit later. >> dion okay, sounds good. spencer thanks. in the north bay, the storm arrived this morning and many folks were ready for a drenching. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is live for us in petaluma with how folks are coping. and maybe i should say how you're coping, because now it is raining compared to what we saw just about half an hour ago. >> oh yeah, definitely raining dion yeah, so far so good. lots of umbrellas up all over petaluma tonight. the rain definitely picking up here in the last 15 minutes. we are getting soaked for sure. more rain is on the way and folks around here they're ready for it. the rain took sonoma county by storm saturday. windshield wipers getting a workout on very wet roads. >> what we like to see nice things, rain.

>> taylor fry is making sure every storm drain in downtown santa rosa is clear and ready for a downpour for. well, yeah, we're doing a great job. >> downtown parks is killing it. it's clean. >> the city worker says, with more rain coming, there's no time to waste. >> storm drains not filled with leaves. so streets aren't going to flood. the water will be able to get down into the storm drains and out to the creek in petaluma. >> neighbors living on wyndham way thought their street was flooding from the storm, but all this water was actually caused by a water main break which took several hours for crews to repair. >> the fireman was banging on my door saying, if you want a car to drive later, you'll have to move it down the street because the street is going to be closed . uh- because a water main broke. so i started filling the bathtub in the sink and uh, shortly thereafter the water turned off in san rafael. >> umbrellas are up for many. the rain is a welcome sight. >> i think we need the rain, but

and try to stay dry. we're live in petaluma tonight. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> great advice. cornell i hope you can get dry. maybe we can get you a bonus or something for all of that soaking you're experiencing. all right, well, in the sierra, they are expecting to get about 1 to 2ft of fresh snow by tomorrow. today, the sierra avalanche center issued a backcountry avalanche warning for the central sierra through 6 p.m. tomorrow. taking a live look now from the conditions at our cove at zephyr cove, camera. um, hard to see. it is dark, but you can see there that flag is flapping in the wind. this is looking out at the south end of lake tahoe. now, earlier today this was the scene along i-80 in truckee as crews with snow plows worked to clear the freeways and streets. caltrain is reminding anyone heading to the sierra to expect delays right now, chain controls are required for all vehicles except four wheel drives with snow tires, as many in the u.s. are bracing for more frosty

conditions as winter weather causes disruptions around the country. 35 states are currently facing winter advisories or warnings spanning from the atlantic to the pacific. the midwest is experiencing dangerous temperatures and record snow, where the iowa republican caucus is experiencing subzero temperatures. the conditions aren't any better in upstate new york, where the bill steelers game has been postponed due to the relentless conditions the nfl has agreed with our assessment that we need to postpone tomorrow's playoff game until 4:30 p.m. monday afternoon . even more freezing conditions are expected next week as arctic air is expected to come down from canada and hit the northwest. now, the weather across the country, combined with the continued grounding of the boeing 737 max nine planes, are creating hundreds of flight cancellations, according to the website flight aware. more than 1300 flights into, out of or within the us were canceled

today at sfo, there have been 73 cancellations. there have been nine at oakland and eight at san jose international all. now, don't forget you can always track the forecast anytime with the very same live doppler seven that spencer uses. just search abc seven bay area in your device's app store to download it right now. moving on. in the east bay, oakland police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened just before three this afternoon. they say officers responded to the area of 94th avenue and a street to find a person suffering from a gunshot. that person was taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. so far, no other details have been released. now all of this comes as a heartfelt session was held in search of healing for the community. oakland leaders facilitated the event at the oakland asian cultural center. the goal there was to build bridges and encourage support and understanding all of it coming at a time when the city

health. it lasted for about 33 seconds. around 1250 this afternoon. the same thing happened there just yesterday afternoon, which is the video you're seeing here. chevron is investigating the cause. there is no health risk to the public at this time. the refinery is already under investigation for a list of violations. in the past couple of months, the san francisco fire department rescued a surfer at point lobos this morning. you can see the rescue boats off in the distance this is on the coast and this video posted to social media. the good news is rescue swimmers were able to reach the surfer in the tides and lead them to

>> reena roy, abc news, des moines buoy for us in comparison, we'll take the rain anytime. >> absolutely. don't want that subzero weather. no been there, done that. yeah >> especially during your good morning america time. >> oh, many, many, many times. yeah let's let's take the rain. well, we have to take the rain because we can't stop it. it's here it comes. looking at live doppler seven. you can see it's more widespread now than in the previous hour. it's still mainly a north bay event in terms of the heavier rainfall, but it's really beginning to cover all of the bay area. and as i mentioned, getting quite heavy and steady and more widespread as it sweeps down from the northwest to the southeast, it will be hitting all parts of the bay area over the next couple of hours. the wind is expected to get gusty at times, but right now it's breezy but not very gusty, with most wind speeds right now under 20mph. let's take a look at our current temperature readings. it's well, it's around 54 here in san francisco. although it's not automatically registering 53 in oakland. we've got 57 in hayward and san jose, mid 50s at san mateo and half moon bay. and

looking at the wet pavement at the golden gate bridge, other temperature readings right now mid 50s at santa rosa, petaluma, napa, 48 at fairfield and low 50s at concord and livermore. and check out our forecast headlines. rainy and breezy with occasional downpours tonight. tomorrow into monday, which is martin luther king junior day. partly cloudy, some flashes of sunshine drier obviously, than today, than tonight and the remainder of next week will be wet and unsettled with periods of more rainfall on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale tonight. storm is a level two. we had lighter rain during the day, but now the ground is saturated and as the rain gets heavier with downpours at times this will be a level two impact on us with gusty wind and possibly flooding on roads and creeks. here's the forecast animation starting at 630 between 630 and about eight, we'll see the rain pushing southward and eastward, hitting more parts of the bay area with steady rain and heavy downpours at times down into the south bay. by about 10:00, and into the peninsula and santa cruz mountains after midnight. we expect the system to weaken a

bit and taper off to just widely scattered isolated showers by the early morning hours, so tomorrow will be a mainly dry day, but we'll be left with rainfall totals ranging anywhere from a quarter of an inch to about three quarters generally, and of course, a lot more in the far north. ukiah about 1.2in, and in the sierra it continues to snow heavily in some places. a winter storm warning is in effect until 4 a.m. tomorrow for the western slopes of the sierra, and the entire the greater tahoe area. 6 to 14in of new snow, generally, some locations may see a foot to two feet gusts up to 60mph. obviously traveling conditions will be a very difficult overnight. low temperatures will be mainly in the upper 40s to around 50. highs tomorrow. relatively mild, mainly right around 60 degrees. a few locations up in the north bay may not quite. make it to 60. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. another dry day on monday for mlk day. rain returns on tuesday. probably only late in the day. continuing into wednesday. that will be a level one storm for that two day
