left behind by saturday's storm as officials in truckee issue an avalanche warning through much of today. good morning. it's sunday, january 14th. i'm stephanie sierra. and to the question on many minds this morning will we see more rain this week after that stormy saturday? >> we are going to see more rain this week. not today, not tomorrow to ruin any holiday plans, but yes, there's more rain on the way and it looks like heavier rain by the end of the week. 52 in danville right now it is 54 in hayward. good morning to you, san francisco low 50s in even some milder readings to the north, despite the 40 were uh- with the cloud cover that's keeping us mild in vallejo at 4744. santa rosa. a little cooler there in the north bay, but overall 9 to 10 degrees milder with a few sprinkles left in san jose visible. reduced santa rosa quarter of a mile, as well as vacaville and a look outside where it is still kind of damp out there in spots. temperatures will be in the 50s throughout the morning hours, then by by noontime we're climbing through the upper 50s,

3:00, about 60 degrees, and we'll time out the next rain maker in a few minutes. stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. crews are cleaning up this morning after the damage left behind from the latest round of rain. a tree came down in occidental in sonoma county and hit some power lines. now that tree ended up blocking bohemian highway and closing the road. nearly every spot in the bay area got soaked yesterday. here's what things looked like in downtown palo alto, where the rain did not keep people from going outside. now to the east bay and walnut creek. thatrillionain came down pretty hard in that area, soaking the roads and making for some slick conditions for drivers in tahoe. the storm is bringing more snow and dangerous conditions in the sierra mountains. a multiple injury crash between kyburz and strawberry blocked traffic in both directions, leaving many in a standstill. when ski resort worker says this happens more than you might think, i always pack a sleeping bag, extra food and something people.

>> it was a candle will keep your car very warm if you have to spend the night somewhere extra prepared. >> even with the challenges, travelers beat the downpour in favor of some fresh powder for skiing and snowshoeing. the message from all those braving the storm, though, come prepared and keep an eye on those changing conditions. here's a look at interstate 80 and truckee, where roads are slick. crews are working to clear the roads. for anyone planning on making that drive a winter storm warning is no longer in effect right now, but travel is still discouraged. in fact, the sierra avalanche center issued a backcountry avalanche warning for the central sierra and greater lake tahoe area. it lasts through 6 p.m. tonight. now here's a look at the current power outages in the bay area right now. according to p-g-and-e's, some people are waking up in the dark this morning. we're seeing the most in the north bay along with several others around the bay area and the east bay. now, two children are recovering this morning after they were hurt during a freeway shooting. california highway patrol says

the two children were in the back seat of a vehicle headed north on i-880 in san lorenzo when it happened yesterday. now, it's unclear if either of the kids were shot, but both were rushed to the hospital. we're told with non-life threatening injuries. also in the east bay, oakland city leaders say the killing of oakland police officer twan lay has led to an increase in tension between the city's black and asian community . they claim stereotypes on both sides continue to lead to mistrust. abc seven news reporter anser hassan attended a special meeting on the matter. >> almighty by me home, a buddhist chant closed out a meeting between oakland's black and asian communities in an attempt to forge unity. >> there is a misunderstanding, and it's always been that way between the african american community and the asian community, and it goes way back, generations back. it doesn't even start here. >> pastor phyllis scott, president of the pastors of oakland association, says for decades, stereotype types and

misinformation has created tension between the two communities. here in oakland, it's generation of pouring into us that they don't like us, that they think that we're all gangsters. >> there are certain businesses that are closing. they feel that they're closing because of the asian population is taking over, and the asian population closed because they feel they can't stay open because of violence. but then came the killing of oakland police officer twan lay in december. >> he was a vietnamese descent and an active member of the asian community. he was them and to kill him. he was a priest provider and a protector of the >> i get it, his demise was a trigger. >> this hits home harder. >> seward chan is president of the oakland chinatown improvement council. he says calls for unity are even more important now, following officer lee's death, adding that stereotype of oakland not being safe makes it even more unsafe. >> we face the same issues we face the same problem. instead

of finger pointing, let's unite and come together with a solution. also in attendance alameda county district attorney pamela price and members of oakland city council. >> there are things that we can do, and there are actions that we can take to bring communities together. we can use our platforms to encourage meetings like this. we can lift up when things are not working in the city. >> the best way to deal with it is have those two communities come together and yeah, say those things. say those things that are difficult to say and then hear the answers. >> in oakland, anser hassan, abc seven news. >> the oakland unified school district is facing allegations of anti-semitism. one of the formal complaints outlines four separate incidents at fremont high brett hardy and montara middle schools. according to lawyers who filed the complaint. the district has begun an investigation. this comes as the publication j. weekly reports that more than 30 jewish families have left the district due to concerns about anti-semitism. we reached out to the district for comment, but a

spokesperson said they do not comment on pending legal matters. in richmond, more flaring at the chevron refinery. yesterday's case was a level one incident, the lowest reportable level, according to contra costa county health. it lasted for about 33 seconds in the afternoon. the same thing happened there friday, which is the video you're seeing right now. chevron is investigating the cause. there's no health risk to the public at this time, but the refinery is under investigation for a list of other violations in recent months in san jose, a woman who was reported missing is now safe after a carjacking and kidnaping . the incident happened around 2 p.m. near the corner of fifth and saint john streets, now she was missing for several hours before she was found. >> fortunately, just after 3 p.m. today, the female victim was dropped off here at the san jose police department by a good samaritan who had seen our alert. she did receive minor injuries during the event. the

determined if anyone was living inside the vehicle. in fremont, employees at the tesla plant are talking about joining a union. activists held a rally to make their case. workers gathered outside to call out a history of alleged discrimination at the facility. they also spoke in support of striking workers in sweden, where about 130 employees walked off the job demanding a union contract at tesla's fremont factory employs about 20,000 workers. some have already said they're interested in being represented. >> we need to build union rights, worker rights for workers here at fremont, where many workers have been fired. we're here on mlk day where there's systemic racism and discrimination. there's union busting, many union busting charges. so what we're saying here is that enough is enough. >> tesla ceo elon musk is critical of unions. in fact, he spent millions fighting the efforts to unionize. earlier this week, worker salaries were

rescue. two snowboarders are sharing how they saved two people buried in a deadly avalanche. as the storm ramped up, the two friends dropped onto the slopes at palisades tahoe ski resort on wednesday. they were swept up into that avalanche road through the snow like a giant wave. but then got buried. they eventually dug themselves out, but two others just feet away could not. >> we realized we were the first responders. we were the most capable of helping right then and it's super time sensitive. i remember feeling incredibly grateful that we were in a position where it was easy for us to get two people out, despite the scary situation. >> they say they're not scared to go back to the mountains and are still stoked to go snowboard again. also in lake tahoe, one local family got a very exciting surprise on the slopes. here's abc news anchor dion lim. oh my god. >> danielle brill and her family are on a ski and snowboarding

trip while making a run at heavenly, danielle was shocked to see a black bear on the snow. the bear eventually climbed a tree, so she quickly snowboard away. a little later, down the hill, she spotted the animal again, but this time noticed a man appearing to approach the animal and things got intense and it was a adrenaline. >> i think he got spooked and he started running full force. he just wanted to get all the way out of there, and i'm glad i wasn't in the line of uh- of full, full force running. >> danielle apparently did the right thing, and bryant from the bear league at lake tahoe, says when you come across a bear, it's best to give it space. bears have a boundary line that they're comfortable with you being at, but when you cross that boundary line, sometimes it's 20ft, sometimes times it's 50ft. >> and when that man was coming up behind him, that was it. he had to get out of there. they're

going to get out of there. and if you're in their way, they might run right over the top of you just to just to escape. >> it was exciting and very sweet. and he was gentle. and i think, you know, we're kind of in his home. >> dion lim abc seven news. >> gentle and looks like he's having fun too. so between 300 to 500 black bears live in lake tahoe basin, 50 of which are actually in the city limits, according to officials. so they got some snow this weekend, as you can see, and we got the rain with more on the way. lisa. >> yeah, not today. we have our break today and then into monday. but yes, we're going to look at a smaller system, then ramp things up as we get towards the end of the week again. so yes, we're certainly looking at some welcome rain, although it took a while for some of you to receive that one inch many by the bay shore, an inch to a third inch and a half out towards orinda, an inch and a half in the mountains in the santa cruz mountains, over two inches for some of you and as we look at live doppler seven right now, maybe a few sprinkles

around san jose, there's fog in palo alto and also santa rosa and we are certainly looking at a hefty totals here. look at mount tam here. how about 5.52in oakland? 0.86 san francisco almost an inch a third of an inch in antioch, san ramon 0.99. and you can see mount omnem at 0.82 and ben lomond over two inches of rain. so looking at a pretty good rain maker yesterday, accompanied by the wind. and we'll see that break today. starting out with 40s and 50s, mid 40s in napa, 53 in hayward, 55 san jose. the rain is in watsonville. salinas, right now. some light showers for us. we're partly cloudy today. the holiday martin luther king junior day will be dry. maybe a few degrees cooler than today. more rain arrives midday tuesday into wednesday. thursday is another dry day and as we look at the sky cover today, we'll have some high clouds. there's a system to the north that will be allowing for high pressure, but filtered sunshine

for today and on your monday. and then this is tuesday at about noon time. looks like we may escape that morning commute, but this will change as we get closer to it and it continues to march its way across the bay area through tuesday evening. perhaps the tuesday evening commute, and then into wednesday early morning. exiting the bay area so early. call on the rainfall. not a big deal. from a quarter to a third of an inch. but as we get into the latter half of the week, this is where i want to pick it up from friday morning. this two is too far out to pinpoint exactly when the rain is going to come in, but you get the idea that we've got a wet friday and perhaps saturday trending wet as well. so we'll keep you posted on that. as for today, it is going to be dry in the upper 50s for napa, 60 in oakland and that fog lifts. we'll see partial sun out there from time to time for a partly cloudy day along the peninsula. there, palo alto about 60 and the accuweather seven day forecast. we've got dry skies for martin luther king

pressure it could be facing from climate change. at the center of the debate, a proposal and reservoir in northern california for abc7 news meteorologist drew tuma looks at the site's reservoir project. go gliding over the rolling hills and the winding creeks. >> it's hard to imagine this valley northeast of the bay area being anything but peaceful, but plans to create california's newest reservoir are pitting supporters like governor newsom against environmental groups. now suing to challenge it. jerry brown is the executive director of the sites project authority, created to run the proposed sites reservoir, which would draw water from the sacramento river. >> the project has been considered for more than 60 years. there's reasons why it hasn't proceeded up to this point, but as i said, those reasons are dwindling away because of our circumstances. because of population growth, because of climate change, he

says. >> the plan does not require damming the sacramento river itself, instead, head water would be diverted and captured during wet years and flood cycles, and held in the newly constructed reservoir. >> really a means by which we divert water out of the river. we still take water out of the river, but we don't dam the river itself, meaning that we pump it in and we open a valve to release it out, he says. >> the design is adapted for climate change, especially if the yearly sierra snowpack becomes a boom or bust cycle with warmer, wetter years triggering surges of runoff and flooding. instead of a steady snowmelt. michael anderson is california state climatologist. >> challenged with warming world is we get to experience things first as an extreme and certainly the last decade. take your pick. right. we've kind of been bouncing between extremes, and we kind of expect that to amplify as we go. >> but environmental groups are concerned that the diversions, even during wet periods, will

harm species like salmon and steelhead. governor gavin newsom used a new fast track law to speed the project through the environmental review process. john bussey is an attorney with the center for biological diversity, but it's still taking water out of the sacramento river system at times when salmon are migrating. >> and that's that's an important thing. these are these are uh- federally protected fish . >> and he points to increase popular strategies like groundwater recharge as an alternate storage solution. early last year, abc seven profiled a farm in the central valley that's being turned into a kind of overflow basin to capture flood surges on the kings river and divert it onto shallow fields. the heart of our lawsuit is the failure to consider a range of alternatives that would look at more environmentally sound means of storing this water. there are also proposals to expand the capacity of existing reservoirs like los vaqueros near livermore , which could also face

now at 630, clean up in the north bay. how crews are trying to avoid any potential flooding as p-g-and-e's adds extra crews this weekend. and good morning. speaking of that rain, lisa. arjun is here tracking the very latest for us and those totals. >> yes, we had a big totals in the north bay where it rained all day long. so anywhere from about an inch and a half in tiburon to 5.5in mount tam. and we picked up about two inches in the santa cruz mountains, 1.27. mount diablo 51. danville 55. in san jose with mid 40s in the north bay. a lot of cloud cover and some fog keeping our temperatures a little bit milder. east bay, south bay peninsula north bay is cooling off 3 to 5 degrees cooler than yesterday, but we do have fog there up in santa rosa, a quarter mile visibility by 9:00. low 50s for most of us. still a

few upper 40s in the north bay. and by 1:00 upper 50s to near 60, that should be the high around 330 or so for many of you. and then by 730, temperatures are still in the 50s. you notice the cloud cover sticking around. does that lead to more rain? i'll let you know in a few minutes. stephanie. all right. >> lisa, thank you. and the middle east now, today marks 100 days since hamas launched a deadly attack in israel that killed roughly 1200 people. a rally is taking place in tel aviv for 24 hours straight to observe the event. marchers are calling for the release of hostages that still remain under hamas control. and new this morning, the israeli military is reporting soldiers on the northern border with lebanon have shot four people. they say crossed into israeli territory in just opened fire on them. since that attack, more than 23,800 people have been killed in gaza, according to the hamas run health ministry. now here in the u.s, protesters took to the

white house to call for a cease fire in gaza. the secret service says demonstrators damaged the reinforced fencing around the perimeter as they chanted and carried flags. some white house staff had to be evacuated as the protest became more intense. president joe biden was not at the white house during this protest and we're told no arrests were made. closer to home now, another protest. but at the port of oakland, people protest against the u.s. support of israel's military involvement in palestine. over 1000 people blocked access to the port early yesterday morning and afternoon. the protesters say the port of oakland is used to ship military equipment to israel. more protests are planned for the bay area today in the north bay. now to weather coverage. cleanup efforts continue after yesterday's storm drenched the region. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard checked in with residents in petaluma. >> the rain took sonoma county by storm saturday when shield wipers getting a workout on very wet roads. what we like to see a

nice clean drain. >> taylor fry is making sure every storm drain in downtown santa rosa is clear and ready for a downpour. >> but yeah, we're doing a great job. >> downtown parks is killing it. it's clean. the city worker says, with more rain coming, there's no time to waste. >> storm drains not filled with leaves. >> so streets aren't going to flood. the water will be able to get down into the storm drains and out to the creek in petaluma. >> neighbors living on wyndham way thought their street was flooding from the storm, but all this water was actually caused by a water main break, which took several hours for crews to repair. >> the fireman was banging on my door saying, if you want a car to drive later, you'll have to move it down the street because the streets going to be closed. uh- because a water main broke. so i, i started filling the bathtub in the sink and uh, shortly thereafter the water turned off in san rafael. >> umbrellas are up for many.

now. search and rescue efforts are underway for two navy seals who went missing off the coast of somalia. u.s. defense officials say both seals fell off a boat and into the water during a nighttime boarding mission on thursday. a seal rescuing another seal when they fall overboard is typical protocol. however it's unknown why they boarded this vessel. we also have new developments this morning, a boeing aircraft traveling from japan had to turn back after a crack was found in the cockpit window. this plane was a boeing 737 800, a spokesperson for all nippon airways said. out of the 59 passengers and six crew members, no one was hurt. the incident comes over a week after a door plug blew off an alaska airlines flight, forcing an emergency landing. now, that aircraft was a boeing 737 max nine plane. here's a live look at san francisco international airport, where 56 flights have been canceled. most of those cancellations are from alaska

air and united airlines. after the faa ordered a temporary grounding for some of the boeing planes, san jose airport also canceled two alaska airlines flights in oakland, canceled nine coming up residents in one iceland town are being told to get out. the stunning video happening right now after a volcano erupted not too far from people's homes. and here's a live look outside, atop our roof camera, looking at the bay bridge this morning at 640.

they're only at the west oakland station. the gates are taller and harder to get through without paying. abc seven news reporter anser hassan shows you where riders will find them next. zara ahmed just returned to the bay area. >> she uses bart a lot, but this was her first time through bart's new fare gates. >> the gates open, the gates closed. and there was just something about that. and i didn't feel unsafe before, but i could imagine, you know, late at night, and you're just kind of if people aren't, are jumping the gates, then, you know, if something happens on the platform, it just feels kind of like a free for all. >> the new fare gates were just installed a few weeks ago at the west oakland bart station. the goal is to stop this. people who don't pay to ride bart. on thursday, bart announced eight stations that will be getting new gates next. antioch richmond, fruitvale in the east bay. across the bay, it will be sfo civic center, montgomery, powell street, and 24th street. antioch mayor lamar thorpe believes the new gates add a
