hard today. why don't we get started with the check of the weather? drew, is it looking nice out there? it is now. >> much of the country, like you mentioned, it's going to be very cold here. it's quite nice. we'll be near 60 degrees later on this afternoon. it's one of those days. you're very happy you live in california. live. look outside from sutro tower. it is quiet out there. we do have a fair amount of cloud cover overhead and that is keeping temperatures on the mild side, so to speak. it's not one of our coldest mornings this month by any means. we're in the upper 40s to the lower 50s right now, 49 in the city are at 50. in san mateo. good morning. we're at 49 in fairfield, 50 currently in san jose. here's a live doppler seven along with satellite. we have a weak ridge of high pressure in control that will create a dry day. but we are going to have a fair amount of cloud cover moving in, especially this morning. we'll get some brighter conditions as we head throughout the afternoon, but here's how the day shapes up. we'll have those partly sunny skies jackets needed first thing this morning. it's a bit brighter this afternoon. temperatures really comfortable later on today. by 4 p.m. we're in the upper 50s to the lower 60s now. rain back in

the forecast tomorrow. we'll talk about that eight minutes. let's check in with sue and see your traffic soon. this morning. >> good morning drew. it's pretty quiet out there. as you might imagine. martin luther king holiday no fog in the golden gate bridge. it's smooth sailing from marin county all the way through the county, across the span. we do have a fog advisory, though, on the altamont pass and on the bay bridge. it's windy, so just a heads up there. three lanes southbound. now for your quiet drive into san francisco, popping over to 8-80. very quiet here as well. both north and southbound past the oakland coliseum. so if you're traveling today or heading to the oakland airport. looking good so far, ladies. >> sue thank you. a search is underway after a plane went down in half moon bay. witnesses say they were having dinner in moss beach, about two miles from the half moon bay airport, when they heard the engine sputter out. abc seven news reporter lena howland is in half moon bay now with the latest lena. we understand crews have found the wreckage. yeah, stephanie, that's right. and i wanted to tell you we are at the half moon bay airport now, where we are

seeing a coast guard helicopter parked on the tarmac right here behind me. and it was near the area of the moss beach distillery, which is where the san mateo county sheriff's office first deployed a drone yesterday evening. and that's where they believe they saw what could be a plane wreckage near the coast in this video, you can see what appears to be a helicopter hovering above the pacific ocean with the spotlight it out, crews told us the coast guard, a number of other agencies and a rescue swimmer were involved in search efforts to find any possible survivors. officials describe the aircraft as a small plane, possibly with two propellers. the san mateo county sheriff's office are not saying how many people, if any, were on board and they haven't said if anyone has been recovered. just yet. we talked with a witness who is from maine and was eating dinner when this happened. having dinner out on the patio, and we heard this like motor engine on, like puttering, like you hear in the

movies when a plane's about to crash and you hear the sputtering of the engine figure something was wrong because it was so close to the to the restaurant, and then the engine cut out, and then it banked in and we lost. >> we lost sight of it at that point, it's just difficult to get out there with the way the tides have been. >> tides are very high. there's very limited visibility. as you can see. it's very dark out. but from what i understand, there is coast guard that's currently out there and in the water. >> last night we saw a life flight helicopter used to transport patients. we haven't been told who was on this rescue helicopter and if they were on board a plane that went down in the ocean and back here live, it's still not clear if that search is still going on this morning or if that was suspended overnight because of those difficult conditions. live in half moon bay. lena howland abc seven news. lena thank you so much. >> i know you'll keep working on that story for us. investigators

on the national transportation safety board are beginning to examine the door plug that flew off in the middle of an alaska airlines flight at the agency's headquarters in washington, dc. an aerospace engineer and a chief technical adviser unpack that door plug over the weekend. this recently released video shows the horrifying moments of the jet door being blown off east bay congressman mark desaulnier says that he's added provisions to an faa reauthorization bill in the senate to ensure more transparency. and this way, it would be clear to know which mechanics assembled that door. >> it's very frustrating. the aviation industry is done. a lot of pressure by um investors to make more money. and we want to make sure that those profits don't come at the expense of the safety of the traveling public. so whether it's boeing, um, or any of the airlines, we're working very hard to make sure they get the message that the congress is watching. >> he says congress will make

sure the faa does its due diligence and ensure that boeing 737 max nines will not fly again until they are safe. >> a third suspect in the killing of oakland police officer twan lay is now charged with murder. 30 year-old marquis cooper's arraignment is set for tomorrow. police have not given any specifics about cooper's alleged role in the shooting. last month, someone shot and killed lay while the officer was working undercover after a burglary at a cannabis business. a total of four suspects, including one man charged with burglary, are all being held in jail. the other three, besides cooper, are expected to enter pleas on thursday. we are rich and resources live and steadfastness. in san thousands rallied over the weekend at civic center plaza for a march of solidarity to mark the 100th day of war between israel and hamas. people traveled from across the west coast to call for an immediate

ceasefire and an end to all u.s. aid in israel. since war broke out on october 7th, the associated press reports more than 23,000 people have been killed in gaza, and more than 1200 people killed in israel 132 hostages still remain under hamas control, and more than 120 people have been released and 33 hostages have died in hamas captivity. san francisco mayor london breed is slamming the recent cease fire resolution passed by the board of supervisors. supervisor dean preston proposed it last month, and the board passed it on tuesday. speaking to the jewish news of northern california, mayor breed said in part, quote, what happened at the board of supervisors during this last month did not reflect our values. while i support the need for community members to be heard, the process at the board only inflamed division and hurt. then, in a direct retort response, our partners at the san francisco standard obtained this statement from supervisor preston, saying in part, quote, the resolution was passed by a

broke in downtown san francisco. roads had to be shut down for hours yesterday around union square. it happened yesterday morning on geary and grant. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone got a closer look at the problem . >> there was so much steam on this san francisco streets. sunday that you couldn't see more than 100ft down grant avenue near union square. this after a steam pipe broke underground and there is steam lines that generate heat for the buildings in and around the area. >> firefighters say they don't know how old the pipe that ruptured was, but traditional steam heat systems are typically

more than 100 years old. >> those with the sfpuc say water from the break appears to have affected the steam line. some night more than seven hours after all of this happened, we saw water being pumped out of the sewer. officials tell us several businesses had basements that flooded, including the high end store cartier, where we spoke with the janitor who told us it will likely take several hours for her and her crew to clean it up. >> maybe like three hours, three hours, three, six hours. >> fortunately, no one was hurt. and while businesses did close for the day, crews are unaware of any major heating impacts for nearby residents. in san francisco, j.r. stone, abc seven news. to the cold weather that's turning dangerous for millions of americans. >> we're talking about temperatures still below zero in the great lakes this morning. in communities in texas aren't much warmer. abc news reporter rhiannon ally has the latest this morning, 100 million americans are waking up to an

arctic blast, bringing snow, ice and record setting cold. >> in texas, the power grid operator is asking residents to conserve electricity as below freezing temperatures push farther south, wind chills overnight in dallas were expected to dip to minus seven an windchill. >> alerts are stretching from montana to the southern tip of texas. some cities in iowa feeling like -30 in mississippi and alabama, people are urged to wrap exposed pipes in their homes with temperatures in the teens expected along the gulf coast this week. >> it comes as communities from oregon to the great lakes dig out after a weekend of heavy snow, parts of iowa getting up to ten inches tens of thousands were without power in wisconsin after the storm dropped more than a foot of snow in some areas in colorado, this avalanche along highway 40 buried at least ten cars more

than 100 flights are canceled already today after more than 1400 were canceled yesterday. in kansas city on saturday, the fourth coldest nfl game ever on record taking place. the temperature at kickoff negative four degrees with a wind chill of -20. chiefs coach andy reid leading his team to victory even as icicles formed on his mustache. and in western new york, lake-effect snow leading to whiteout conditions, forcing officials to postpone the bills playoff game. the team offering free food and $20 an hour to any fans willing to help clear snow at highmark stadium. yeah, this fan going shirtless as he took a ride down a makeshift snowshoe route. rhiannon ally abc news, new york it looks like they made the best of it there. >> well, the lake tahoe area is clearing up after this weekend's

heavy snow storm. things have calmed down since all the rain, strong winds and heavy snowfall heavily. resort is reporting more than two feet of fresh powder in the past week. there are currently no chain restrictions on highway 50 or on interstate 80. all right. >> a bay area snowboarder and her family had quite the run in with a black bear while on the slopes in lake tahoe on the mountain at heavenly, danielle brill was shocked to see this bear on the snow as she was making her way down. she actually saw it twice at the same run and then quickly snowboarded away both times to avoid it, she says. it was a tense encounter and it was as adrenaline. >> i think he got spooked and he started running full force. he just wanted to get all the way out of there and i'm glad i wasn't in the line of uh- of full, full force running. it was exciting and very sweet, and he was gentle and i think, you know, we're kind of in his home and i'm hanging on there.

>> yeah, he was on a mission. supposedly. that's the right thing to do to give the bear space. and i was actually just looking this up there. apparently there's 3 to 500 black bears in lake tahoe basin, so, you know, this is their home. what would you guys do, though, if you if you saw a little bit. >> yeah. let it pass by. do its thing and then, you know, move on. >> and there were a lot of people around some kind of surprise to see it there because, you know, they usually kind of try to avoid you. yeah, totally. and they were like, so they should be hibernating right now. >> should be sleeping. i would think so. that's the general rule. >> yeah. yeah, totally. >> but you know, they're changing just like climate's changing. everything's changing. >> yeah yeah yeah. today though, one of the nicest places in america is right here. it's going to be very comfortable. look at this map. the bay area, one of the warmest spots right now across the entire country. we have a bitter blast arctic air across a big portion of the midwest and even into the south. it's 11 degrees in dallas right now. so you can see it is on the chilly side for a lot of folks.

but for most of us right now, it's not nearly as bad. you see, those temperatures? we're in the 40s and in the 50s right now, 49 in the city, 50 in san mateo, 50 in san jose, 49 in fairfield. so, yeah, you do need the jacket, but it's not one of our colder mornings we've had this year. today it's partly sunny skies, a little bit brighter as we head into the afternoon. upper 50s to the lower 60s for daytime highs overnight. tonight we'll add cloud cover to the sky in advance of thatrillionain tomorrow. temperatures in the 40s and in the 50s on the abc seven storm impact scale. it's level one here, mainly in the afternoon and evening on our tuesday. scattered showers, isolated downpours and just do anticipate. it's a messy evening commute. here's why. look at the rain chances tomorrow. and they really ramp up in the evening and late night tomorrow. and that's we could see some isolated downpours moving through. so here's future weather tomorrow morning. no problems. it's just a cloudy start to our tuesday showers move in later on in the afternoon. first in the north bay and then in the evening they become more widespread and they see those isolated downpours

off the coast of half moon bay overnight after a plane crashed into the water. officials have not said what kind of aircraft this was, how many people were on board and if anyone was recovered. >> number two tonight is the iowa caucus, the first official contest of the 2024 presidential race. candidates have been reaching out to supporters for weeks. turnout could be impacted by the very cold winter weather in the state. >> number three in arctic blast impacts much of the country, stretching all the way down to texas. more than 100 flights are already canceled this morning due to severe weather. >> and number four, it is anything but frigid here today. it's actually mild, will go into the low 60s and a lot of areas for daytime highs. it's a partly sunny but dry day today. rain is back in the forecast tomorrow. it's a level one tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening with scattered showers and some

isolated downpours. >> and number six, we're looking at a fatal accident. this is in san jose on city streets. monterey highway southbound between skyway drive and branham lane. they've been out there most of the evening doing their inspections and investigating options. so just a heads up, that's a pretty major thoroughfare in south san jose. >> and bart riders can expect some schedule changes starting today. departure times have changed by a few minutes. bart is encouraging you to check the schedule for the line that you ride, so you can see any updates . >> number seven. here's a list of some expected closures today for martin luther king junior day, the usps won't be delivering any mail. most nonessential government services like the dmv and city offices will stay closed. banks along with the nasdaq and the new york stock exchange, will also not be trading people and communities across the country are coming together to reflect and celebrate the life and the global legacy of the civil rights leader, doctor martin luther king junior in san francisco. thousands of people are expected to take place in a

march, a parade will begin at the caltrain station by the ballpark and head to yerba buena gardens, about a mile and a half away. it starts today at 10:00 after at 11:00, rather after the march. there will be an interfaith service. mayor breed is expected to attend the annual mlk celebration train will bring hundreds of people into san francisco for the march and this is video from previous years. >> every year, the train makes its way from san jose to san francisco, commemorating the historic 54 mile march that doctor king led from selma to montgomery, alabama, in 1965. the train leaves from the station out there at 930 this morning, and it's going to stop in palo alto and san mateo before it makes its way to san francisco. and over the weekend, groups across the bay area honored doctor king with day of action service events. abc seven news reporter tara campbell was with volunteers in san francisco helping those in need on the streets.

>> one piece of trash at a time, volunteers helping clean up the streets of the tenderloin in honor of martin luther king, jr. >> it's in my mother's legacy. she she asked me when she was alive that as long as i'm alive to do service on the weekend of martin luther king. >> excellent turnout. bigger than we expected. >> more than 100 people volunteering sunday at glide memorial church's day of action, including this mother daughter duo we both really believe in service and supporting the community that we live in, so this seemed like a good day for the two of us. >> people are really engaged and being part of this, this effort to really, you know, engage with community and to help our homeless individuals. >> volunteers handing out toiletries, socks and other items to help those struggling on the streets. >> there are wonderful people and they need, you know, they just happen to need support and help right now. so it's great. it's great to be able to do that. and glide is a perfect organization to do it with. >> i know a lot of people give

drew. i know we were talking about how a lot of the country is just freezing cold right now, but it's pretty nice out here. >> yeah, we're going to see a very nice, comfortable afternoon. here's a live look from our oakland airport camera. it is calm and quiet out there. we do have mostly cloudy skies this morning and that has helped to actually keep us on a mild morning compared to some of the past couple of mornings we've had last week. not too chilly. we're in the upper 40s to the lower 50s for our starting temperatures. we do have a dense fog advisory in effect in the north bay this morning. you can see why napa, santa rosa, we're down to half mile visibility. that dense fog advisory is with us until about 11 a.m. this morning, partly sunny skies early on will likely see some brighter conditions as we head throughout the afternoon. today is a dry and quiet day. we'll get those temperatures very comfortable into the upper 50s and the lower 60s, but rain is back tomorrow. we'll talk about that coming up in eight minutes, but let's say hi to sue and see how traffic is doing. >> pretty quiet, drew, pretty quiet for martin luther king junior day today. we do have

some folks up and adam, but no major accidents or stalls to report to you. san mateo bridge is looking good about a 17 minute drive across the span over towards the high rise and the foster city side of things. and our first look at the bay bridge toll plaza this morning. it's very light. don't expect metering lights to be on. we'll follow that for you of course. and look at some of your drive times. everybody's in the green all right. >> thank you sue. developing news a driver rushed to the hospital after crashing their car into the second story of the clock tower lofts in san francisco's rincon hill. it happened last night on the i-80 westbound off ramp at the intersection of bryant and sterling streets. a resident describes the moment that the car slammed into the building. >> it felt like an earthquake. yeah you know, it's a great neighborhood. once in a while, we have something like this happen, but, um, it's still a great place to live.

>> the fire department says one person was inside the building at the time, but nobody was hurt. officials say the driver was taken to the hospital and is listed in critical condition. we're working to learn how a father and his five year old son are doing this morning, a day after being rescued from high waves in pacifica yesterday afternoon, the coast guard, the chp helicopter and other rescuers were called out to a stretch of water north of maury point. that's just west of the sharp park golf course. both father and son were struggling in the water for at least 30 minutes. rescue swimmers pulled the pair from the water and rushed them to the hospital in critical condition. one of them needed cpr. >> developing news now off the coast of half moon bay, where a plane went down last night. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live at the airport with the latest on the search for possible survivors. lena stephanie, i'm at the half moon bay airport right now where we

are seeing a coast guard helicopter here parked on the tarmac just behind me. and we have also been seeing crews from the san mateo county sheriff's office coming and going from here all morning. now, crews from the sheriff's office were first to spot what appeared to be a plane wreckage in the water near the coast of moss beach. by using drone technology. this all happened about two miles from the airport. in this video, you can see what appears to be a helicopter hovering above the pacific ocean. with the spotlight out, crews just told us the coast guard, a number of other agencies and a rescue swimmer were all involved in search efforts to find any possible survivors. officials described the aircraft as a small plane, possibly with two propellers. we talked with a witness who is from maine and was eating dinner at the half moon bay airport when she saw a plane flying erratic before hearing something go terribly wrong. oh yeah, big loud. >> like i said, sputtering engine. we were already out in the patio, so we just looked up.

it was like telephone height, like away from us. it was very close to the to the shoreline at that point. it was so loud and it was sputtering. so we were and it was and it was banking. so we were we were worried at first that it was going to hit us. >> it's unknown to me if there were if there were, and how many people might have been at the plane at the time. but every effort will be made to try to rescue people if they are indeed out there. again. that's unconfirmed at this point, though. >> last night we saw a life flight helicopter used to transport patients at the half moon bay airport, but we haven't been told who was on this rescue helicopter and if they were on board a plane that went down in the ocean. now the sheriff's office have not said how many people, if any, were on board that plane. and if anyone has been rescued, live in half moon bay. lena howland abc seven news. >> lena, thank you so much. us navy crews are expected to continue the search today for two navy seals who went missing

in the water off the coast of somalia. they were lost at sea after falling one after the other during a nighttime boarding operation in pitch black open ocean. it's not clear what prompted them to board the vessel at that time, and a protocol one seal must jump in after another. if one falls in the water during boarding operations in the ocean at night are some of the most dangerous things that you can do for seasoned operators. >> they'll tell you it's the most dangerous thing that we do. >> it happened in the gulf of aden, which has become a u.s. naval hotspot since the houthis in yemen have carried out at least two dozen attacks against commercial ships in the area. a u.s. official says that the seals were on an unrelated mission, and were not part of the operation. to retaliate against the houthis. >> all right, here's something to wake you up this morning. a homeowner in southern california got quite a scare when she found a bear. get this sleeping under her house. reporter lori perez caught up with the owner about

how it all happened. >> what i did is go into my basement with the flashlight and its eyes shone right at me. this is the moment a several hundred pound black bear finally came out from underneath tina herzog's monrovia house for most of the day. what are you doing out, out and out. she'd been pleading to get it to leave the cross base. well, pleading and making all sorts of noise. warning. got pots and pans and banged it. and i had my leaf blower. i took it down there and turned it on. but didn't budge. she and various members of her family took videos every few hours showing the unwanted and unwelcome visitor crammed but apparently comfortable. and if you ask me, way too close for comfort in the shallow, unfinished space under their first floor space, totally open to the stairs leading upstairs, i moved food that i have in the pantry out because i know they have a really strong sense of smell. um, so hopefully that helps and hopefully it

doesn't decide to come up the stairs. this is when it first showed up at about 430 this morning on their ring camera. and herzog says when it seemed to linger, she knew she was in trouble. when i came out at dawn, i saw that the crawl space window had been torn off and i thought, oh no, that bears in there. it popped the grate and shimmied on through. and that's where it stayed until this evening, when she tossed some mothballs in the space. and who knew? bears hate mothballs was moving it immediately decided to leave. i don't know what woke this one up and decided to come over here. i've heard of it happening before here, but i just thought, why me? >> wow. >> that bear seemed quite comfortable. >> yeah, good thing everybody's okay. >> and the safe, you know, the bear got out safely and all that. >> well, coming up, four people are dead in a hot air balloon crash in arizona. investigators are working to uncover what went wrong as a fifth passenger in that hot air balloon is fighting for their life this morning.

in iceland yesterday. it sent semi-molten rocks spewing toward a nearby settlement for the second time in less than a month . the eruption came after a swarm of earthquakes near another town, the community was evacuated overnight. but a familiar feeling residents there were also evacuated back in november and returned in late december. iceland averages an eruption every 4 to 5 years. >> amazing images there. wow. well, the suspected long island serial killer is due in court tomorrow. rex human is accused of murdering three women in new york. tomorrow he's expected to be charged in the death of a fourth. the sister of one victim shared her thoughts after the search of human's home and his arrest. >> it's bittersweet because i know the details of her death. she was just a normal person and that she had a normal, loving

heart. just like any person that you walk down next to on the sidewalk and she didn't deserve this. >> he has pleaded not guilty to the first three murder charges. four women were found dead in 2010 near gilgo beach, long island, each wrapped in burlap. one was found with a belt that had a distinctive buckle bearing the initials a prosecutor said could stand for humans. father. >> this morning we're learning more about a young nurse who is among the four people killed during a hot air balloon crash in arizona. it happened over the weekend. roughly 60 miles southwest, 65 miles southwest of phenix and what's called the skydiving capital of the world. here's abc news reporter alison kosik. >> this morning, the ntsb and the faa are investigating what caused this hot air balloon to crash in a desert area. 65 miles southeast of phenix, arizona, killing four and leaving one fighting for their life.

>> this is sad. this is sad. >> sunday morning, police believe 13 people initially went up in the hot air balloon in eloy, an area popular for skydiving. eight of them were skydivers, and before the crash, they successfully jumped out. but that left the pilot and four others inside the basket. the gondola. when something went wrong. there are reports that the balloon was deflated and coming straight down before a hard impact, and abc affiliate knxv is reporting that the pilot is among the dead. >> shortly thereafter, something catastrophic occurred with the balloon, causing it to crash to the ground. >> they saw the last 10s before the impact and they said that the material of the balloon portion was just straight up. >> our affiliate also talked to family members who say one of the victims was 28 year old katie bartram from indiana. her family says she just became a registered nurse last year and went to arizona with her friends
