memorial in washington this morning. >> an incredible memorial indeed. so many of us are waking up to blasts of winter. look at the snow in buffalo this morning. they had to push the bills wild card game to this afternoon. for so many, it's not the snow it's the bitter cold. >> that weather a factor in iowa ahead of tonight's caucuses. the first contest of the 2024 presidential campaign. no voting by mail so all republican voters will have to brave the cold to cast their ballot. donald trump has a commanding lead. nikki haley and ron desantis appear to be fighting for second. we'll dig into the numbers and what to look for as the results come in. rachel scott starts off our team coverage in des moines, where the wind chill is minus 28 right now. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, it is not expected to get any warmer. it is negative 14 without the wind chill. this is expected to be the coldest iowa caucus on record. this is a chance for the republican candidates, getting their supporters out of the snow and ice and into caucus

locations just like this high school cafeteria in west des moines. with the caucuses just hours away, a confident donald trump sweeping into frigid iowa urging them to turn out. >> you can't sit home. if you're sick as a dog you say -- even if you vote then pass away, it's worth it. >> reporter: hundreds of his supporters braving the subzero temperatures to attend his first and only event before the caucuses. >> we'd walk through broken glass to see trump. >> you would? >> yes. >> caucus for him, too? >> yes. >> this will impact it. we'll see who wants to show up, who's serious. >> reporter: that brutal weather up ending the contest in the final stretch. impassable roads, blinding snow, forcing the candidates to cancel a slew of events. >> the blizzard is not going to stop us. we will fight, the cold, the wind chill is not going to stop us. >> we're going to keep on going anywhere and everywhere. we'll go until the last hour. >> reporter: trump has

campaigned here less than his rivals but still holds a nearly 30 point lead. now nikki haley and ron desantis are in a close race for second with the former south carolina governor gaining new momentum, sharpening her attack against trump. >> rightly or wrongly, chaos follows him. >> reporter: trump taking notice, targeting his former ambassador to the u.n. >> nikki did a good job. she was okay, but she's not right to be president. honestly, she's not tough enough. >> reporter: for months desantis was seen as trump's toughest rival. he spent his entire campaign on the state. he has visited all 99 counties, holding 173 events. haley, just 82. trump 36. you had more events here than trump and haley combined. why aren't you doing better in the state? >> we're doing very well. i don't think we go by the polls. they've historically not predicted who's going to win. i think we have a better beat on who's going to turn out. >> reporter: desantis saying regardless of the outcome tonight he's staying in the race.

>> what has you convinced that this is a party that's ready to move on past donald trump? >> what i have seen -- obviously, he's got a share. who ever kisses the ring is good. you could be the lousiest republican in america but if you kiss the ring, he likes you. you could be the best republican but if you don't kiss that ring, he'll trash you. >> reporter: the republican candidates say they will do everything to pack caucus sites like this one in west des moines. but let's head back out here into this brutal cold. i mean, it looks bad here. but we are told it's even worse in rural parts of the state where the snow has not been completely cleared yet throwing another curve ball into this already unpredictable republican primary, george. >> thanks. let's bring in rick klein to break down the polls and what to watch for. good morning, rick. >> george, good morning. this is the lay of the land. des moines register poll that came out over the weekend, 48% say they are voting for donald trump. that would be a historic victory. even to approach 50% would be a big deal.

nikki haley in second place. that's a reordering of the race. it will be a reordering of the expectations going forward. i'll tell you, george. it tracks with what we're seeing nationally. this is our latest poll. we asked people if they would be satisfied with any candidates. republicans said they would be satisfied with trump. that's ten points better than desantis. look at that for nikki haley. fewer than half republicans say they would be satisfied with nikki haley wins the nomination. here's what to look for. the margin of victory. donald trump set a record of 13, 20 plus points. if trump wins by 20 or 30 points he will blow the rest out of the water. that battle for second is all important. ron desantis has so much riding. if he doesn't finish second, if he finishes third, that's bad for him and good momentum for nikki haley heading into new hampshire. lot of people thought this would be the record year to break the record turnout in 2016 but that brutal weather probably holds it down. that means die hards are going out. maybe good news for ron desantis and donald trump. in terms of watching the returns come in tonight, george,

remember, donald trump lost caucuses eight years ago. that's probably not going to happen again, but the candidates would like to recreate what they did last time. look to that northwest corner of the state. heavily evangelical areas, the areas like sioux county. that's where ron desantis has to do very well. look to the cities and suburbs to look for nikki haley. look in johnson county, iowa city, university of iowa. those are the places any kind of anti-trump vote, if it exist, will materialize. robin? >> all right, rick. we're going to our correspondents on the ground tracking nikki haley and ron desantis as they attempt to gain ground on donald trump. eva pilgrim has the latest. good morning, eva. >> reporter: good morning. we are at nikki haley headquarters. they're setting up for tonight. haley is confident she'll have a strong showing in iowa. we've been on the campaign trail with her all weekend. the weather has been a real hurdle. we saw semis in ditches on icy roads across the state. while she did have a cancel a

few events, haley determined to make her final call of the caucus appearing at the majority of events reminding people in a head to head with president biden, current polls show she is the only candidate that beats him by a wide margin. >> you said you're going to have a strong showing in iowa. what does that mean? >> we won't know until we see what the number looks like. we want it to be strong so it can catapult us into new hampshire. we expect it to be a two-person race in new hampshire. then we go to our sweet state of south carolina. it's one state at a time. the goal is to be strong in every state until we finish this. >> reporter: and her message appearing to resonate with people who voted for trump twice, moderates, independents and even democrats who have told us they plan to change their party affiliation so they can caucus for nikki haley tonight. george? >> okay, eva, thanks. let's bring in whit johnson with ron desantis. good morning, whit. >> reporter: hey, george. good morning. ron desantis has planted his campaign flag here going all in.

a huge investment of time and resources with the calculation he would be able to connect to the state's traditional conservatives. despite nikki haley pushing ahead in the polls, desantis is still projecting confidence. he believes he has a big advantage when it comes to the ground game especially getting people to these caucus sites in these subzero temperatures. desantis has visited all 99 counties in iowa, doing more events than donald trump and nikki haley combined. one desantis campaign staffer told me they've identified precinct captains with suv's, trucks and four-wheel drives. they're bringing shovels and ice melt. they're literally going to dig people out and transport them directly to these caucus sites. that includes picking up seniors from retirement homes. desantis is back out there today, multiple events, making his final push. he's telling people he doesn't mind being the underdog. his campaign knows that if he does not finish first or second in iowa, it raises major questions about how he moves forward in this race. robin? >> it does, whit. thank you.

we want everybody to stay with abc news and abc news live all night for in-depth coverage and the results from iowa. streaming coverage starts at 7:00 p.m. eastern. as you know, millions are waking up this morning facing potentially life threatening cold. the arctic chill hitting the plains to the midwest. even parts of the south seeing wind chills below zero. alex perez is in frigid chicago. i don't have to tell you, what is it, minus 31 with the wind chill right now? >> reporter: yeah, robin. this brutal deep freeze moving in over the weekend. the air is so cold you can probably see some of the steam rising from the buildings behind me here. this arctic cold can be very dangerous. this morning nearly the entire continental u.s. engulfed in arctic air and winter storms. whiteout conditions pummelling buffalo. overnight residents seen desperately digging out cars.

new york's governor declaring a state of emergency, a travel ban extended into some areas after scenes like this. this video inside highmark stadium showing what kickoff conditions would have looked like if the bills/steelers wild card game had not been postponed. >> the snow bands are staying longer. they're broader. also we're now seeing in real time 4, 5, possibly 6 inches an hour in the south in particular. >> reporter: up to two feet of snow already on the ground. the fans answering the call to come help shovel out the stadium ahead of today's rescheduled game. in the midwest, heavy snow and now bone chilling temperatures wreaking havoc. while in colorado, an avalanche crashing down. these cars buried, but no injuries reported. even the south targeted by the heavy snow and ice. in texas the company operating the state's electric grid asking customers to conserve power. more than 1,400 flights already cancelled this morning. in des moines, iowa, a wind

chill of 36 below zero. our team briefly stuck on the ground due to frozen equipment. crews only able to help one plane at a time. over the weekend, the winter blast whipping up waves from the shores of michigan to the coast of new england. and when it is this cold frost bite can begin to set on exposed skin in five minutes. not so great news, much of this bitter cold is staying with much of the country for most of the week. gio? >> all right, alex. thank you for braving the cold for us. stay warm. we're going to turn to overseas to the israel/hamas war and israel launching its deepest strikes into lebanon as the conflict reaches that 100 day mark. matt gutman is in tel aviv with more. >> reporter: good morning. breaking news. we are about ten miles north of tel aviv. scene of what police are saying multiple ramming attacks by palestinians from the west bank.

one woman, 70 years old, was killed in one of these attacks. you can see that. destruction of this vehicle. heavy police presence around us in this town. 13 other people were wounded in that attack. the focus, 100 days after this war began, remains on gaza, where about 24,000 palestinians have been killed according to hamas run health ministry. the majority of them women and children. people mobbing these aid trucks delivering flour to the northern part of the gaza strip. u.n. agencies saying about a quarter of the population in gaza, nearly 600,000 people, are facing famine conditions. president of israel saying the war will continue. the war will last for months longer. george? >> okay, matt t. thanks. now the search for two u.s. navy

s.e.a.l.s. who went missing during a mission off the coast of somalia. elizabeth schulze is at the pentagon. >> reporter: it's been four days since two navy s.e.a.l.s. went missing off the coast of somalia. u.s. officials say an intense search and rescue operation is under way. we know they were deployed to the navy's fifth fleet and were conducting a mission thursday night. they were trying to board a ship from another boat when one of the seals was knocked by high waves and fell into the water. the other following protocol jumped in to help. we know the seals have been taking part in a mission to try to disrupt the flow of weapons supplied to yemen. but officials are making clear this mission is not directly linked to those u.s. air strikes in yemen in recent days. overnight a u.s. fighter jet in the red sea shot down another missile from houthi militant areas of yemen. the houthis have been targeting dozens of commercial ships with both seals missing we don't know what prompted them to board that ship this morning in the first place. robin? >> we do not.

>> we are looking forward to that. following a lot of headlines, busy day in iowa. the weather could have an impact on the first voting in the campaign. there is no voting by mail, so all republican voters will have to brave the cold to cast their ballot. donald trump has a big lead with nikki haley and ron desantis basically fighting for second. the iowa high school principal hailed a hero for trying to save students when a shooter opened fire earlier this month has died of his injuries. he was shot by a 17-year-old student at perry high school january 4th. a sixth grader was killed with seven injured. plus lava is threatening a neighborhood outside iceland's capital. hundreds of earthquakes rocked the area sunday. houses burst into flames in the evacuated town. just one month after another eruption forced hundreds from their home. >> take a look at this. nasa introduced a new supersonic jet. it could change the future of commercial flights. the x59 was developed with lockheed martin. it is expected to fly at 925 miles per hour.

charges, prosecutors said he was the prime suspect in a fourth. now we're told a new murder charge is coming as soon as tomorrow. this morning alleged serial killer rex heuermann's is expected to be charged with killing a fourth woman who was body was found on long island near gilgo beach. sources familiar with the beach told abc, heuermann will be in court tuesday to be charged with murdering maureen braynard barnes. she was wrapped using a belt bearing the same initials as his father. >> there was a hair recovered from maureen brainard barnes. a belt buckle that was around her legs. >> reporter: prosecutors also say they've linked heuermann to phone calls on barnes phone after her disappearance. >> maureen is in this place near the other ladies. that puts him into a geographical pattern. she fits into that. >> reporter: heuermann already pleaded not guilty of murdering the other women. the remains were all found near

relationship with one of the special prosecutors she hired to work the case against the former president. in her comments, she did not confirm or deny any of that. >> i'm a little confused. >> reporter: it's the first time she has spoken since being accused of having, quote, an improper relationship with the special prosecutor in the alleged election interference case who she hired, who records show took the job a day after he filed for divorce from his wife. >> i appointed three special counsels. it's my right to do it. pay them all the same hourly rate. >> reporter: speaking before one of the oldest black churches in america on sunday, fulton county district attorney fannie willis shared she was flawed and imperfect, and spoke about the racism she has endured. she says no one is focusing this way on the two other special prosecutors she's appointed who are white. >> isn't it fitting playing the

race card when they only question one. >> reporter: but a lawyer for a co-defendant of the former president says race has nothing to do with it and a legal filing she's accusing the fulton county prosecutor and nathan wade of having a serve serving arrangement where she said they purchased tickets for cruise lines and traveled together to napa valley. and without evidence, the lawyer accuses willis and wade of paying for these alleged vacations with the nearly $650,000 in legal fees that wade has earned since working the case. in a statement sunday the lawyer says the biggest difference between the white and black special prosecutors is neither of the white hired lawyers have taken miss willis to california, florida or on cruises to the caribbean. she wants her client's indictment thrown out and willis removed from the case. >> there's a potential that she could get disqualified from the case. then if you have a new prosecutor appointed, somebody who doesn't like the case, the case could be dismissed because they don't think that it should be moved forward. >> reporter: republicans in washington are already all over this. the house judiciary committee,

led by republicans, is now investigating. an attorney for donald trump says that he's considering adopting this same motion against willis. donald trump, mr. roman and 17 others pleaded not guilty last august after prosecutors charged them with attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in georgia. four of them took plea deals in exchange for testifying against other defendants. the judge has not set a date for trial yet but willis is asking that it begin in august setting up a scenario we could potentially have a president-elect in november being called to state trial here in georgia. there's a hearing likely next month to discuss some of these accusations where fannie willis will have a chance to respond. >> we'll see what happens. all right, steve. thank you. coming up next, usher takes us inside his super bowl halftime show. show. ♪ ♪

600,000 participants. they found one in ten adolescent and teenage girls are using some sort of weight loss supplement, laxatives, even diuretics. this is possibly an under estimate given the lack of informational awareness about the risks. >> what are the risks of using these items for weight loss? >> risk of using these items especially at a young age can range. it can include things like electrolyte abnormality. most dangerously it can include abnormalities with your heart rhythm. persistent and chronic use of laxatives can lead to damage to your colon. psychological effects, using these products at a young age can increase the chance of developing disordered eating. for clarity, clinical diagnosis. disordered eating focus on the habits and patterns around food. for example, extreme exercise or over exercising or difficult

"modern family" that's all i know how to do. it was a struggle. i also had to learn how to smoke for the first time in my life at 50 years old. i had to learn how to do cocaine. not real one but through pretend. there are scenes in the tv show that required it.

i would just read them the night before. these were monologues. two months before to prep with someone, to help me understand what really serious dramatic acting was. it was a lot of preparation. then to realize i thought, you know, it's better that i look the way that i really look 'cause that's how i really look in real life. this is three hours of hair and makeup. [ laughter ] make up by the end of it is three and something hours. i was ready to go home. i'm like an only my day was about to start, so it was a lot the week the teeth. yeah, the i have plastic from here to my forehead because they had to cover my eyebrows. um, the skin color i would put like this weird makeup so it

didn't look like a nice golden tan. so it was a lot. and the wig and i think also so, you know, doing something that i had never done, like acting, you know, a dramatic role, it was like exhausting at the beginning. i would go home thinking, i'm dying. i mean, i'm like, i'm i'm getting sick or why can i fall asleep? i'm going to go crazy. i realized it's because you're on a set doing all these things. i was i would go to modern family like go home, have fun on, you know, here we would go home. and i was like, i mean, your body doesn't know that you you weren't killing someone or you know, that they weren't choking you or that you're screaming. so it was like it took me some time to realize and understand what was happening to me. i mean, i respect it now so much. actors that only do this kind of stuff. >> we are looking forward to it. griselda premieres on netflix january 25th. thank you for coming in and coming up. a

i was like, oh, that's interesting. then we said mea, and it had 40,000 people come to our campus. i learned about other people's experiences with midlife. midlife isn't very well as a life stage. there are a lot of things that get better with age. >> what is your definition of midlife? >> ah, yes. i would say we're in midlife still. i'm 63. i'm in later midlife. midlife used to be considered earlier but longevity in the u.s. grew 30 years in the 20th century. midlife became a 20th century phenomenon. midlife for some academics now is 35-75. >> 35-75. >> i know. the core of it -- [ laughter ] core of it is still 40ish. >> 35 is really young. >> if we're going to live to 100, 75 is not unheard of. people are still working in their 70s. midlife has a bad brand.

the word crisis got attached to it in 1965. >> right. what is the big skill you have the learn? you said bad time in the 40s, great time in the 50s. what did you learn? >> i learned myself. i learned chip 101. i understood myself better. i understood how do i function on this planet? and what's the best i can offer? i think there's a beautiful quote the best way to define your gift, the word of life is to develop it an the meaning of life is to give it away. >> there's so many factors that go into it. where things are with your family, your health, where things are with your career. how do you sort it all out? >> you don't do it alone. i mean, a lot of people are suffering through midlife alone. there's adolescence, which we know of. there's middle-escence. lot of us are suffering alone. talking with people, going to mea a midlife wisdom school,

reading a book on midlife. mostly really doing the deep dive of understanding yourself. >> that is the number one skill? >> yeah. midlife is not a crisis. it's a chrysallis. just like there's three stages of a butterfly. the chrysallis is dark, but it's where the transformation happens. happiness research shows after age 50 we get happier after having a slow decline in our 20,30s. and that work has shown that when you shift your mind set on aging from a negative to positive you gain 7 1/2 years of additional life. >> that makes all the difference there. you just posted a video as you finished radiation treatment. >> i just finished radiation friday. >> you look great. [ applause ] >> thank you. yeah. i'm here. i decided at this point in my life it's not about showing off, it's about showing up.

in "hawkeye." that was your first time ever acting. tell us about what made you go for the role. you have never acted before and you went for it. >> it happened. i remember i was standing on a raft in the lake. my friends sent me a screen shot of a casting call. they were looking for an indigenous woman in their 20s. it fit my description pretty well. i didn't think anything about it. i was hesitant at first. i had two people send me the exact same casting call. i said, i'll just go for it. three months later i went through the audition process and i got the role. it was so crazy. >> so unbelievable. critics are already saying that "echo" is unlike anything else that marvel has put out because you are playing the first native american, first deaf super hero. this role must be so important for you. >> yes, so important. the authentic representation is

so important because i feel like it's beautiful, indigenous people, these deaf kids can also see them on the screen. they can feel like i am finally here. i feel like i have worth and i can do anything i want to go for. maybe they can see that similarity in me when they see me on the screen. i was scrolling on facebook and a mother posted her daughter with these two pieces of hair that mya lopez shows, her bangs were showing. she said, you inspired my daughter to wear her hair like you because she's indigenous herself. i'm very happy i can inspire deaf indigenous kids. >> we want to bring out a present. we have a gma onesie. you just had a baby boy. congratulations. >> oh my gosh. thank you. so cute. oh. oh my gosh. >> how does that feel knowing your son will see you as a super hero one day? >> oh my gosh. he's an indigenous baby, of
