there are some data suggesting that this strain can evade antibodies that we develop to prior strains. >> a stanford doctor answers a big question why does covid seem to be so contagious right now? but as cases tick up around california and the country, there is new hope. tonight, researchers here in the bay area are working to develop a universal vaccine. that research is happening at stanford. infectious disease specialist doctor abraar karan joined us earlier today on our 3 p.m. program called getting answers to explain why a universal vaccine is so needed. yeah, he said, it's because the current vaccines on the market, which were just updated in the fall, are already outdated.
9:32 pm
>> they don't provide immunity against the strains that have mutated and are making people sick right now. but a universal vaccine could solve that problem. >> there's a couple of ways that this could work. so one is if you get a vaccine that's intranasal, for instance, where you're actually getting a good immune response from your mucosa , that actually can work to reduce the amount of transmission that happens. because we know that the current vaccines, they don't do a great job at preventing you from getting sick, but they prevent how sick you get. so we need vaccines that just stop transmission altogether. and a universal vaccine would be one where regardless of the types of common mutations that are happening, you retain a pretty durable immune response. um, now this is tricky because with rna viruses, they mutate very rapidly, and there's no guarantee in which way these viruses mutate. the next big mutation could actually make it more virulent, where it causes more severe disease, it could make it more transmissible. and there's really no guarantee viruses act in the ways in which they want. there's a lot of randomness in that. as well. so, you know, it's i wish i had a more reassuring news. the one
9:33 pm
reassuring point is that because we've been exposed, our immune systems have an advantage that they didn't have back in 2020. >> so that is at least encouraging. doctor karen went on to say a universal vaccine could help boost our immune system so we can all get over being sick more quickly. unfortunately he doesn't know how soon it could realistically be available. once stanford research is complete, their proposal will still have to go through a rigorous approval process. of course, with the fda, oakland unified school district sent out new covid guidance to its families today. >> the directions are based on the recently updated guidance on isolation and testing from the california department of public health staff members and students are now being advised to stay home until they haven't had a fever for 24 hours without using fever reducing medication, and until covid symptoms are mild and improving, they should also mask up when they're around other people indoors for ten days. after you become sick or test positive. >> a go fund me was set up to support the recovery of two children caught in the gunfire
