>> good morning to you. i'm rhiannon ally. we begin with the results overnight from the iowa caucuses. >> it's the first showdown in the republican presidential primary race. and it was an easy win for former president trump. he took more than 50% of the vote. a historic landslide. florida governor ron desantis, who spent more time in iowa than anyone else, was far behind with 21. nikki haley was a close third. haley was invested far more in next week's new hampshire primary than in iowa, but the voters in iowa have now painted a clearer picture of the race, and the biggest issues. >> an overnight, former president trump calling for unity not just among republicans, but democrats as well. abc's em nguyen is in des moines with a closer look at the results. and good morning rhiannon. >> good morning. yeah. former president trump cements himself as the republican frontrunner in this race for president after a resounding victory here in iowa. >> we want to thank the great people of iowa. thank you. we love you all. >> this morning, donald trump

appears one step closer to reclaiming the republican nomination for president after a dominating win in the iowa caucuses. >> this is a huge blowout win, it looks like, for donald trump, for us to be able to project a win this early. >> abc news projected a win for trump just 30 minutes after the caucuses began, based on early returns, republican voters headed to schools and community centers to participate in the caucuses, an initial step in the months long presidential nominating process. in his victory speech overnight, a gracious trump praised his republican opponents and called for american to come together. >> it would be so nice if we could come together and straighten out the world and straighten out the problems and straighten out all of the death and destruction that we're witnessing. that's practically never been like this. >> turnout was lower than expected, but entrance polls reveal who turned out to support trump in iowa. despite record cold and trump spending little time in the state, one question

asking caucus goers if donald trump were to be convicted of a crime, would you consider him fit to be president? 65% said yes. and another question asking do you think that joe biden legitimately won the presidency in 2020? 66% saying no. >> so this is trump's party. they believe what he says on the issues most important to iowa caucus goers. >> the economy was number one, followed closely by immigration issues. trump has made central to his platform, helping him finish iowa with more than 50. ron desantis and nikki haley far behind. >> we've got our ticket punched out of iowa. >> desantis invested heavily in iowa, visiting all 99 counties, holding more campaign events than haley and trump combined. >> i am going to get the job done for this country. >> many experts called iowa a make or break moment for his campaign, as recent polls showed haley gaining ground. >> and the question before americans is now very clear. do

the midwest as far south as texas, brutal and life threatening cold this morning, the brutal blast of winter weather is expanding, putting an end to the snow drought in new york city. the big apple could see three inches of snow, the first measurable amount for the area in nearly two years. in washington, d.c, federal offices are closed today, with six inches possible. there in the midwest, wind chills could drop as low as 45 degrees below zero this morning. even as far south as brownsville, texas. it could feel like ten below zero. the company managing the power grid in texas has requested people conserve electricity between six and 9 a.m. today across the south, drivers were struggling to stay on the road in snow, sleet and ice. accuweather storm chaser reed timmer was in nashville road crews are trying to keep up with the rates, but it's just impossible down here in the south because the infrastructure doesn't really support it. >> the conditions are keeping

more than 1 million students home today. >> schools from chicago and detroit to denver, dallas and houston are closed. meanwhile, for college students in kentucky were rescued after getting stranded in the daniel boone national forest. officials say the students were camping and had underestimated the conditions, and authorities in wyoming say a skier has died in an avalanche. the third avalanche death just this month in the u.s, experts say conditions are ripe for dangerous snow slides across the west. >> climate change is impacting avalanche cycles. um exactly how it's impacting them or what we're going to see in the future for that's that's much less clear. >> meanwhile, parts of new england could also see six inches of snow today. we'll take a closer look at your full forecast in just a few moments this morning. >> new york prosecutors are set to announce a new indictment against a suspected serial killer, rex huberman is already charged with killing three women whose bodies were found on long island's gilgo beach in 2010. huberman has pleaded not guilty in those cases. the new indictment is in the death of

maureen brainard barnes, whose body was also found in 2010. she was wrapped in a belt which had a buckle bearing what may have been human men's father's initials. six other deaths remain under investigation. >> we turn now to escalating tensions in the middle east after iran launched deadly missile strikes inside iraq, near the us consulate. the strikes are raising concern that iran is getting more aggressive in the region. here's abc's derrick dennis this morning. >> explosions in the city of erbil, iraq, after neighboring iran launched ballistic missiles claiming to target the local headquarters of israel's intelligence agency. at least four civilians were reportedly killed. some blasts near the us consulate. others also reported in syria. all of this raising concern about a wider spillover of violence across the region stemming from the ongoing war between israel and hamas in gaza. >> we've done everything we can to deter this, but it obviously did not work, and the choice was up to iran. so i do think iran will likely amp up it through

its proxies. of course. >> mick mulroy, former deputy secretary of defense for the middle east, sounded the alarm last week over what iran might do after the us launched a series of attacks on iranian backed rebels in yemen who have been targeting commercial ships angry over the violence in gaza, the us state department overnight condemned the new attacks in iraq, saying we oppose iran's reckless missile strikes, which undermine iraq's stability. but iran's revolutionary guards today threatened more revenge, citing what it calls recent atrocity charges by israel. iraq's government is holding a security meeting today to go over iran's noncompliance with the security deal between the two countries and here in the us. defense secretary lloyd austin is now out of the hospital after prostate cancer treatment just in time to face this new escalation. andrew, rhiannon, derek. >> thank you. israel's government says it fears that two of three hostages who appeared in a new video released by hamas may be dead. the hostages were likely speaking under duress, and abc news is

not showing the video. among them is 26 year old noah argaman , seen here being carted away by hamas during the october 7th attack. back in this country, the proposed merger of the kroger and albertsons supermarket chains has hit a snag. >> washington's attorney general is suing to block the deal, claiming less competition would push food prices higher. the companies have said they need to merge, though, to better compete with rivals, including walmart. a new move by apple to avoid a ban on its smartwatches. the company is reportedly dropping the blood oxygen feature from two new models. the move is meant to resolve a patent dispute. >> time now for your tuesday weather. >> good morning. it's the coldest air of the season in places like chicago, waking up to ten below zero in the windy city and even way down in houston, texas, 23 degrees for a wake up. watch out for areas between atlanta and new orleans

other side of the road. glad he's okay. >> we turn now to utah and an airport security breach raising troubling questions. newly obtained video showing the chilling moments a man breached security at salt lake city's airport. the are on the tracks. >> we found his clothes. >> video obtained by salt lake city fox affiliate kstu shows the fatal new year's day incident. 30 year old kyler effinger bursting through an emergency exit, running down the stairs to the tarmac and then sprinting shoeless towards a delta flight with 95 passengers aboard set to take off for san francisco, authorities eventually found effinger unconscious after he had apparently climbed inside the plane's cowling. the metal covering that encloses the engine can have the tower contacted aircraft to shut the engine down. officials began life saving efforts, but effinger died at the scene. >> the exact stage of the engines operation remain under

investigation, but the um blades, the air blades were circulating when officers arrived on scene, effinger was scheduled to fly to denver to see his sick grandfather, but suffered what his family says was likely a mental health crisis after missing his flight earlier in the surveillance video, he could be seen running up to gates in the terminal trying to pull open doors, even banging his shoes against the window overlooking the tarmac. >> effinger's father says his son suffered mental health issues for years. >> a man in nebraska is facing charges for a parking lot rampage at home depot. police say he drove a front loader bashing several cars, including a police cruiser. a witness says the driver accused home depot of stealing from him. >> i don't know what makes someone do something like that. i guess nebraska is the new florida. i'm going to start seeing nebraska, man. headlines everywhere. >> you just might. when police drew their weapons, the suspect surrendered. >> one woman's wedding day will be memorable for all the wrong
