downpours. this morning, though, it's quiet. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. and you can see our storm is on approach. so we have cloud cover thickening this morning. the front itself is really going to cross us this evening. so ahead of it we'll get some light showers developing this afternoon. some steadier rain after sunset, a little bit of fog out there. santa rosa, fairfield right now coming in less than a mile. those are the two spots we're watching this morning with that cloud cover overhead temperatures not too chilly. we're in the upper 40s to the lower 50s right now, but the storm impact scale, it will be in effect later today. this afternoon, this evening. it's a level one for those showers and downpours just prepare for a slick and slower evening commute. so here's how the day looks. it's pretty quiet this morning. it's into the afternoon. by 4:00 we have those showers and downpours and those showers continuing into the evening. we'll take a closer look at the storm coming up in eight minutes. let's check in with sue and see how the commute is doing. >> good morning drew. we're starting off with a traffic alert. we do have some video

this is in terra linda, the area of san rafael near northgate mall. it's at northgate drive and manual t fratus parkway. it's an overturned gas tanker truck and mostly they're very concerned about the smell. and as a matter of fact, i smelled it driving by the from the freeway this morning, which is several blocks away. so again, the intersection of northgate drive and fratus parkway overturned gas tanker truck avoid the intersection. they're mostly worried about the smell. if you're in the area that's what's going on. close your windows and doors. it's going to be a considerable amount of time before that intersection is clear. otherwise, we have a slowdown in an accident earlier accident in san carlos. we'll check on that in a few. >> all right, sue, thank you. arborists have been working through the night to remove a massive tree that came crashing down in golden gate park. firefighters say the giant eucalyptus fell onto five cars on crossover drive yesterday afternoon. thankfully, no one was badly hurt. 19th avenue is now open in both directions. abc seven news reporter lena howland

is there live now, and lena have the crews cleared all that debris. >> stephanie, good morning to you. right now, it does appear that crews were able to clear most of that debris here from 19th avenue. and also, the good news here is just up the road from here where it all happened on 19th avenue, has reopened. take a look at this video. this massive tree came down just around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. san francisco fire tells us there were a total of five cars that were damaged and stuck underneath the tree. firefighters say 11 people were rescued from inside of those vehicles, including some children. two of the 11 people had to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. one family was inside, one of the cars on their way to san jose yesterday when the tree came down. they described the terrifying moment that we saw the tree just it was slow motion and it literally just came down on our on our roof.

>> seriously, are we dead? um but that was the more, more terrifying. >> and then i looked around my kids, making sure there was no blood or glass or anything impounding them. >> it took city crews more than six hours to get 19th avenue cleared and reopened by around 10:00 last night, the san francisco fire department says it's still working alongside the city's recreation and park departments arborists to finish removing what is left of the tree. as of right now, there is no word yet on when that work might be complete. but this area has been cleared for now. reporting live in san francisco. lena howland abc seven news. >> lena, thank you so much. former president trump is waking up this morning as a big winner in the iowa caucus. he won by an unprecedented margin in. in his victory speech, trump continued to falsely claim that he won the 2020 election. i don't know if you know, but they did polls tonight on the election of 2020. >> do you believe it was honest

or not? 82% said 82% said it was not. and we can't have that, chairman. we can't have that. you can't have a situation like that. so, uh, we're going to straighten out our elections. >> he said he wants to make a move to mandatory voter id and same day paper ballots. reporter julia benbrook is in des moines with who came in a very distant second. so we're going to put america first. >> we're going to make america great again. again iowa, we love you. the results from the iowa caucuses weren't surprising, as former president donald trump held a commanding lead in the polls, coming in to monday night, trump made it clear to his supporters that he didn't just want to win. >> he wanted to win big, urging iowans to show up for him no matter the weather. >> you can't sit home if you're sick as a dog. you say, darling, i've got to make it. even if you vote and then pass away, it's worth it. remember

>> meanwhile, florida governor ron desantis and former un ambassador nikki haley battled it out in the race for second place. desantis went all in on iowa, visiting all 99 counties and receiving a rare endorsement from the state's governor. desantis who grabbed the second place finish, is promising his voters he will continue to fight in spite of all of that that they threw at us, everyone against us. >> we've got our ticket punched out of iowa, haley finishing in third in the hawkeye state, has been on an upward trajectory in new hampshire, where voters head to the polls next week. >> i love you, iowa, but we're on to new hampshire reporting in des moines. i'm julia benbrook. >> and just hours ago, vivek ramaswamy was a republican presidential hopeful. now he's a former candidate. ramaswamy only garnered about 8% of the vote in iowa. he bowed out of the race

after a disappointing finish in the caucuses last night. as of this moment, we are going to suspend this presidential campaign. >> there is no path for me to be the next president absent things that we don't want to see happen in this country. and earlier tonight, i called donald trump to tell him that i, i congratulated him on his victory . and now going forward, he will have my full endorsement for the presidency. and i think we're going to do the right thing for this country. >> ramaswamy added that there has to be an america first candidate in the white house. he plans to travel to new hampshire today to campaign for trump ahead of that state's primary next week. and here in california, former president donald trump is building his support for the 2024 nomination among republicans in the state. a new poll from the berkeley institute of governmental studies shows. among likely gop voters, trump's support is now up to 66, compared to 57% in october. under the state's new

republican party rules, the percentage would be enough to award trump all the state's delegates in the republican primary, as opposed international terminal could be one step closer to being renamed after late california senator dianne feinstein. >> today, a vote is expected at the san francisco airport commission meeting at nine this morning. according to our media partners at the sf standard, commissioners are expected to vote in favor of the renaming. feinstein died in september at the age of 90. she was the longest serving woman senator in u.s. history, and the first woman to serve as mayor of san francisco. >> speaking of sfo, you might see some extra security tonight. first lady jill biden is flying in this evening ahead of a fundraiser tomorrow. she's expected to talk at a political event in the city tomorrow afternoon. she'll also be up north for a fundraiser in sonoma county on thursday. these events are part of a group of fundraising stops in california, utah and ohio. 5-08 this

morning, and it's a quiet start to the day, but we will find rain returning later on this afternoon. >> a live look from our oakland airport camera. it is quiet and it is dry, but looking at our rain chances as we go throughout the day, they're pretty low. early on this morning we're expecting a pretty dry morning commute, but that changes into the afternoon and into the evening. that's when those rain chances really start to increase. i would anticipate as you go about your evening commute, just prepare for it to be slower with some slick roads. let's break it down. region by region inland. today we're starting out quiet in the 40s. there you can see into the afternoon. in the evening we have those rain chances and temperatures staying in the mid 50s for daytime highs around the bay shoreline. it's a similar setup. start in the 40s this morning. we'll get close to 60 degrees later on this afternoon, but thatrillionain starts to enter the picture by about three, four, 5 p.m. and continues throughout the evening as we head towards the coast, we'll find the timeline to be very close to what's happening across the rest of the region, starting out in the 40s. and

atakan kilic out of cupertino. four passengers and a pilot were on board. the only survivor is a 23 year old woman who is now in critical condition. eight skydive ers exited the balloon before the crash. the cause is still under investigation. we're also learning new details about the small plane that went down in the ocean off the coast of half moon bay. >> crews say they found a woman's body along with the wreckage. that discovery was made after a long search off of ross cove. that's close to the half moon bay airport. here's abc news reporter lauren martinez with the latest. >> the wreckage of a propeller plane showing just how catastrophic sunday night's crash was. the ntsb is investigating why this plane carrying two people on board crashed off the half moon bay coast on monday. sky seven captured part of the plane that was upside down the san mateo county sheriff's office said that a woman's body was found in the water near the crash site

during a search for victims. >> i feel so bad for the families. i could just imagine how i would feel. >> sagan was a commercial air pilot out of sfo for more than 40 years. registration for the aircraft involved in this crash shows it was a single engine cozy mark four, which can be amateur built. it's unclear if the people on board the plane were the registered owners. >> the owner the builder is responsible for the for the construction of the aircraft and the maintenance of the aircraft and operates under a very loose set of rules. costs about $20,000 to build, plus the engine, etc. probably by the time it's done about $30,000. it holds four people. it was about 200 miles an hour. >> the sheriff's office says that the plane took off from the east bay. sagan said it investigators will be looking at whether conditions the aircraft and air traffic control recordings like this one. >> hudson bay traffic experimental 65 six tango echo is on a approximately two mile final for only three there.

>> among the questions was there ever a mayday call? >> and it could mean that whatever happened happened in a hurry and what happens in that sort of case is, um, the pilot sometimes won't have time to make a mayday call. >> on monday, the coast guard suspended search efforts after crews looked around 28mi■!s for nearly six hours by helicopter and boat. >> it's really a tragedy, and i mean, that's very cliche, but there are a lot of feelings there in the south bay, lauren martinez, abc seven news the us is facing another covid 19 surge, all because of a new variant. >> infections and hospitalizations are increasing this winter season, though numbers aren't as high as previous years. the new variant is very contagious. this doctor abraar karan, says a universal vaccine could be a great but distant solution to stop the spread of the virus and new variants. we need vaccines that just stop transmission altogether and a universal

vaccine would be one where, regardless of the types of common mutations that are happening, you retain a pretty durable immune response. >> the doctor adds that part of what is making this current surge worse is that the current vaccines on the market, which were just updated in the fall, are already outdated. >> the oakland unified school district is trying to stay ahead of an infection surge. the district sent out new covid guidance to its families yesterday. the directions are based on the recently updated guidance on isolation and testing from the california department of public health. this allows students and teachers who test positive for covid but aren't showing symptoms to come to school. you are advised to stay home until you haven't had a fever for 24 hours without using fever reduction medication, and until covid symptoms are mild and improving, they should also mask up when they're around other people indoors for ten days after you become sick or test positive winter storms and record breaking cold temperatures are hitting much of the us over the next week.

warmest places to be across the lower 48 this morning. look at the map. we're at 49 in the city, 49. never felt so good when you compare that to 25 below. in chicago it feels like seven below. in dallas, texas. so this ctic outbreak has reached all the way as far south as texas. miami right there, looking quite nice at 74 degrees this morning, but we will see some rain later on today. it's quiet out there from the exploratory camera. the morning commute. you'll have no worries. we're going to remain dry. it's just pretty cloudy out there ahead of thatrillionain. we track later on today. temperatures kind of holding in the 40s through 10 a.m. here's the abc seven storm impact scale this afternoon and evening showers and some downpours. and the biggest impact is really just going to be a slick and a slower evening commute. let's time it all out for you. future weather this morning it's quiet. we have cloud cover overhead as we head towards lunchtime, we'll start to see some isolated showers close to the coast and into the north bay, but advancing through the afternoon, the showers become more widespread. we'll track those

pockets of downpours and even through 8 p.m. this is when the front is going to move through here. and still bring us about a wet end to the day today. rainfall totals. most of us will land between a quarter and a half of an inch of rain, with the bulk of that falling after sunset. later on today. highs today will go into the mid 50s and the low 60s. we're dry for the first half of your day and then into the afternoon. those showers start to develop overnight tonight we'll find the showers exiting. we'll keep some of that cloud cover and temperatures falling into the 40s. here's the accu weather seven day forecast. it gets pretty busy towards the latter half. you can see we're dry tomorrow and thursday and then rain is back in the forecast friday evening. and then it's just an act of pattern through the weekend and early next week. we have showers saturday, sunday, monday we're watching sunday very closely for the possibility of some heavy rain. sue. >> all right. thank you drew. and we are checking out a couple of problems. first of all, if you're traveling south on 101 through san rafael in the maryland area, you will smell gas. that is an overturned gas

big rig at the intersection of northgate drive and manuel de freitas. it's off the freeway by a couple of blocks, but you could smell it. it's very prominent. the police department is on scene and so is the tanker company. they're saying, just close your windows and doors. if you're in the area they're working to clean it up. earlier. accident in san carlos north 101 before holly street has been cleared out of lanes, recovering nicely. unfortunately, we have a fatal accident. this is off the roadway southbound 101. before 380. it was a car versus a pedestrian, and a coroner is on the way as well as ambulance. so they may be taking a lane of traffic there just to heads up, ladies. >> all right. sue thank you for the update coming up, the seven things to know this morning and celebrating the legacy of doctor martin luther king jr. >> the events held across the bay area to honor him on what would have been his 95th birthday today. but one author says we're missing the point of the

let's see how the commute is doing on this tuesday. hi sue, busier than yesterday for sure. >> we had the holiday. so as you're looking at the east shore freeway, those headlights are beginning to fill in quite the commute that you have. you're busy there as you make your way from, say, san pablo all the way down towards emeryville, berkeley and towards the macarthur maze. no metering lights at the bay bridge yet. if you are in the terra linda area, the streets around northgate. mall during right near manuel parkway, they've got an overturned gas rig. you can probably smell it if you're in the area. i was driving a couple of hours ago, passed it on the freeway and i could smell it from there. the intersection is closed off because of this overturned big rig. so just a heads up, avoid that area if you can. otherwise we're looking at some more people on the road today. as we mentioned, but no issues coming south across the golden gate. if you are traveling from excuse me, san rafael into the city, pardon me,

rising in the middle east after iran launched deadly missile strikes in iraq. the strikes are raising concern that iran is getting more aggressive in the region. iran's revolutionary guard took credit for launching the ballistic missiles they claim to have targeted a spy base for israel's intelligence agency. officials say at least four people were killed and six others were hurt. >> we've done everything we can to deter this, but it obviously did not work in the choice was up to iran. so i do think iran will likely amp up it through its proxies. of course, the us has condemned the strikes as reckless and imprecise. >> today, iraq's government is holding a security meeting to discuss iran's noncompliance with the security agreement between the two countries. new developments on the conflict in the red sea. >> us officials say a houthi ballistic missile struck an american cargo ship yesterday. it caused minor damage and nobody was hurt. but as a reporter, jen sullivan explains, these ongoing attacks could cause gas prices to rise. the

sound of uk fighter jets lifting off part of a us led effort to go after houthi militants based in yemen, backed by iran. >> these militants, who say they're taking revenge for israel's war on hamas in gaza, have been attacking container ships in the red sea since november. it's one of the world's most important trade routes. the violence has forced commercial shipping companies to avoid the area and now oil companies are following suit. >> what you're seeing is a number of those oil tankers are no longer traversing the red sea . >> oil prices are already starting to tick higher on friday morning, us crude climbed as much as 4.5% to $75.25 a barrel. >> we see that the shipping is more restricted in the red sea. the price of oil is going up. >> gas prices remain relatively low for now. according to triple a, the national price of gas was $3.07 on monday, but low prices

drove around this area this morning and all roads were back open. this, of course, comes after 19th avenue was shut down for more than six hours yesterday evening. take a look at this video. this giant eucalyptus tree came down just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon inside of golden gate park. san francisco fire tells us there were a total of five cars that were damaged and stuck underneath the tree. firefighters say 11 people were rescued from inside of those vehicles, including some children. two of the 11 people had to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. one parent was inside of her blue tesla with her kids when it all came crashing down. i was in the car with my family and next thing you knew, this big tree with the lamppost came in slow motion down on us. >> so we can see it because we had a glass roof. and we're so lucky that i looked around. >> everybody was fine. >> and yeah, scary. this is. but

of the game as showers return to the forecast, it is a quiet start to our morning. here's a live look at sfo. we are not anticipating any weather worries when it comes to the morning drive. it's just pretty cloudy out there. we'll have those temperatures just really staying in the 40 today. with that cloud cover overhead. it's this afternoon that the rain comes back into the forecast. here's future weather. we'll go hour by hour. this is 1230. this afternoon. you can see just some light isolated showers close to the coast. it's closer to three four, 5 p.m. the showers become more widespread in nature. and we'll find some pockets of downpours developing after the sun goes down this evening. so just anticipate with this level one storm on the abc seven storm impact scale, that your biggest impact is a slick and slower evening commute. as this front moves through here. rainfall. most of us will fall within about a quarter to a half of an inch of rain. as this front moves through here. later on today, we'll go from quiet conditions to rain in the afternoon. in the evening, temperatures in the mid 50s to the low 60s. winds are not all that gusty with this system. most areas will find winds less
