slower evening commute on the way. quiet this morning we'll have a lot of cloud cover in place and then it's the afternoon. in the evening we'll track those showers moving through, but it's a mild rain. temperatures in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. by 4 p.m. that's the forecast. let's check in with sue and see how traffic's doing this morning. >> good morning. and we are going to go to san rafael. first you're looking at the bay bridge where the metering lights were turned on about a half an hour ago in san rafael. what's happening is on the surface streets of manuel parkway. manuel freitas parkway and northgate drive. they had an overturned big rig gas truck that happened much earlier this morning. and if you can't see it and you're in the area, you can certainly smell it. they're asking folks to close their windows and doors. i smelt it going on the freeway, which is a couple of blocks from here. so avoid the area of fratus parkway and northgate drive where those gas stations are. if you're in the area, you know that area and it's going to be out there for a while. ladies. >> all right. thank you so much, sue. arborist work through the night to remove a massive tree

that came crashing down in golden gate park. firefighters say that the giant eucalyptus tree fell onto five cars yesterday afternoon. the good news is, nobody was badly hurt and 19th avenue is now back open in both directions. abc seven news reporter lena howland is there live. and lena, what does it look like right now? well, gloria, it looks like arborists have cleared most of that debris. >> we drove along 19th avenue this morning in the area where that tree came down, and we did not see any other crews out there. take a look at this video of this massive tree came down just after just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. san francisco fire tells us there were a total of five cars that were damaged and stuck underneath the tree. firefighters say 11 people were rescued from inside of those vehicles, including some children. two of the 11 people had to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. one family

was inside, one of their cars on their way down to san jose yesterday when the tree came down, they described the terrifying moment. >> we saw the tree just it was slow motion and it literally just came down on our on our roof. >> seriously, i thought, are we dead? >> um, but that was the more, more terrifying. and then i looked around my kids, making sure there was no blood or glass or anything impounding them. >> it took city crews more than six hours to get 19th avenue cleared and reopened by around 10:00 last night. no word yet on what caused this tree to fall in the first place. live in san francisco, lena howland abc seven news. >> lena. thank you. glad to know everyone is safe. >> now to an update on a story you'll only see on abc seven news. >> a 12 year old girl is recovering from major surgery this morning after she and her 13 year old brother were injured during a freeway shooting over the weekend. a single shot went through the car door saturday

night on 880 in san lorenzo. it's unclear who fired the shot or if the gunman was in a nearby car. the kids mother says they were relaxing in the back seat when they were shot. a family friend describes what happened, so she said that she was driving along. >> um, you know, just a rainy night, fairly quiet, very smooth drive. and then all of a sudden, it sounded like somebody popped a balloon next to their ears, and her husband looked at her and said, what was that? >> very scary. caltrans tells abc seven that 200 highway cameras have been installed in the bay area. the idea is that these cameras can help later identify vehicles involved in shootings. just like this. however, caltrans says the cameras won't be fully operational until the spring. >> now to your voice your votes. former president trump is waking up this morning as a big winner in the iowa caucus. he won by an unprecedented margin with more than 50% of the vote. meanwhile, florida governor ron desantis edged nikki haley in the battle

for second place. desantis had gone all out on iowa. he visited all 99 counties and even got a rare endorsement by the state's governor. haley finished in third and has been on an uphill trajectory, both in iowa and new hampshire, where voters will go to the polls next week. we'll have a live report from iowa coming up at 630. >> and just hours ago, vivek ramaswamy was a republican presidential hopeful. now he's a former candidate. ramasamy only garnered about 8% of the vote in iowa. he bowed out of the race after a disappointing finish in the caucuses last night. as of this moment, we are going to suspend this presidential campaign. >> there is no path for me to be the next president absent things that we don't want to see happen in this country. and earlier tonight, i called donald trump to tell him that i congratulated him on his victory and now going forward, he will have my full endorsement for the presidency.

and i think we're going to do the right thing for this country. >> ramaswamy added that there has to be an america first candidate in the white house. he plans to travel to new hampshire today to campaign for trump ahead of that state's primary next week. this morning, we expect sfo will approve the renaming of its international terminal after late california senator dianne feinstein. >> a vote is scheduled at the san francisco airport commission meeting at 9:00 this morning, according to our media partners at the sf standard, commissioners are expected to vote in favor of the renaming. feinstein died in september at the age of 90. she was a longest serving woman senator in u.s. history, and the first woman to serve as mayor of san francisco. >> and you might see extra security at sfo tonight. first lady jill biden is flying in this evening ahead of a fundraiser tomorrow. she's expected to speak at a political event in the city tomorrow afternoon. she'll also be up north for a fundraiser in sonoma county on thursday. these events are part of a group of

buried highmark stadium over the weekend, which forced the nfl to postpone the game from sunday to yesterday. and these are some dedicated fans here. might i say, gosh, the buffalo bills offered $20 an hour to fans to help dig out the stadium from all that snow. drew, would you do that for $20? >> i mean, if i had a ticket, you got to do what you got to do to watch the game. you can't blame them. that is a lot of snow. they got to get through here. we're tracking the return of some showers later on today. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. we have two components. first, a warm front moves through this morning and then a cold front this evening will bring about some downpours to finish out the day, but i do want to press in a little bit tighter on live doppler seven. we are tracking that warm front off our coast right now, typically with warm fronts. what they will do is they'll add cloud cover to our sky. they'll moisten up the atmosphere here. so we'll watch. a lot of this may not reach the ground, but we will keep an eye on some of these showers as they approach later on this morning. taking a look at future weather as we go.

in critical condition. eight skydivers exited the balloon before the crash, and that cause of this crash is still under investigation. we're also learning new details about the small plane that went down in the ocean off the coast of half moon bay. crews say they found a woman's body along with the wreckage. that discovery was made after a long search off ross cove near moss cove that is near the half moon bay airport. the sheriff's office says that the plane took off from the east bay. registration for this aircraft shows it was a single engine, cozy mark for experts say this type of plane can be amateur built. it's unclear if the people on board the plane or the registered owners, the owner, the builder is responsible for the for the construction of the aircraft and the maintenance of the aircraft, and operates under a very loose set of rules. >> costs about $20,000 to build, plus the engine, etc. probably by the time it's done about

oakland unified school district is trying to stay ahead of an infection surge. the district sent out new covid guidance to its families yesterday, saying that the directions are based on the recently updated guidance on isolation and testing from the california department of public health, and saying this allows students and teachers who test positive for covid but are not showing any symptoms to come to school, and you are advised to stay home until you haven't had a fever for 24 hours without using fever. reducing medication. and until covid symptoms are mild and improving. and they should also mask up when they're around other people indoors for ten days after becoming sick or testing positive. >> well, it appears fewer people are turning to booze at home after some record breaking years during the pandemic, according to an international champagne trade organization. total shipments from france fell about 8% from 2022 to 2023. the numbers for the 2023 were very close to pre-covid levels. sales

finding the rain and at times it will be steady as we head towards the evening, the cold front will move through here closer to 8 p.m. and we could see some isolated downpours with this level one system, your biggest impact is just going to be a slick and slower evening commute. as you see about a quarter to a half of an inch of rainfall later on today. not a huge, impactful storm. it's just kind of the timing as we're going about the evening commute that is kind of going to bring about a slower end to the day highs today. we'll get you into the mid 50s and the low 60s with thatrillionain mainly in the afternoon and the evening overnight tonight the showers are out of here. we'll keep some of the cloud cover and temperatures in the 40s. we're watching the weekend because we have a series of storms that could soak us future weather showing you by saturday and sunday we could see an inch or two of rain. i think the bulk of this is likely going to fall on sunday, but for the niners game, we do include the possibility of a light shower. it's a mild rain though. a kickoff temperature on saturday at 60 degrees, but i would pack the ponchos. we do have the chance of a couple of

for. all right. good morning. it's tuesday, january 16th. >> let's get a check of your forecast with drew. and i know drew, we've been talking about, you know, the weather kind of the rain's been on and off. yeah. and this morning are we in the clear as far as rain. >> yeah. for the most part it's a very quiet start to our day. we'll find that the afternoon in the evening is when the action really ramps up. you look at live doppler seven, along with satellite this morning. we're tracking our storm system and two pieces. first, we have this warm front. you see here that is spreading cloud cover overhead. it's not out of the question. we could have some light drizzle, especially in our hills with that warm front. but most of us will remain dry. it's not until the cold front moves through here in the afternoon. in the evening, that we see that widespread wet weather return. it's a level one on the abc seven storm impact scale. we'll get some isolated downpours, a slick and slower evening commute is your biggest impact, so it's the second half of the day. we'll track those showers and downpours, but it's a mild rain, so to speak. those temperatures in the upper 50s to the low 60s. let's see how we're doing on the roads this morning. sue good morning a jam up at the bay

trump supporters came out in droves last night on the coldest caucus day ever. ron desantis taking second place, ending up about 30 percentage points behind trump in iowa, a result finding win for donald trump, who smashed a record for his wide margin of victory. the former president, with the projected win after just 30 minutes, receiving more than 51% of the vote, tightening his grip on the 2024 republican presidential nomination. >> ian, what a turnout. what a crowd. and i really think this is time now for everybody in our country to come together. >> governor ron desantis finishing in a distant second with about 21% of the vote after rallying in all 99 counties, desantis is sounding triumphant for edging haley in the gop contest for second. >> because of your support. in spite of all of that, that they threw at us, everyone ran against us. we've got our ticket punched out of iowa, behind

desantis by just 2. >> former south carolina governor nikki haley, who called her third place finish a testament to the momentum she's been gaining. i can safely say tonight i iowa made this republican primary a two person race, and despite the bitter snubs, zero temperatures, entrance polls show who turned out to support trump in the state. one question asking do you think that joe biden legitimately won the presidency in 2020? 66% saying no. quite overwhelmingly, two thirds believing something that is flatly untrue. >> this is trump's party. they believe what he says. >> entrepreneur vivek ramaswamy announced he's dropping out of the race and backing trump. president joe biden fundraising off of trump's victory in iowa, saying this election was always going to be you and me versus extreme maga republicans. candidates now have their sights

nobody was seriously hurt there. secretary of defense lloyd austin is out of the hospital. he'd been hospitalized for more than two weeks after complications from prostate cancer surgery. he initially kept his diagnosis secret from the biden administration. the lack of transparency has triggered a top to bottom review of notification protocols. the department of defense says that the 70 year old will work from home as he recovers. >> tensions are rising in the middle east after iran launched deadly missile strikes in iraq. the strikes are raising concern that iran is getting more aggressive in the region. iran's revolutionary guard took credit for launching the ballistic missiles they claim to have targeted a spy base for israel's intelligence agency. officials say at least four people were killed and six others were hurt. we've done everything we can to deter this, but it obviously did not work in the choice was up to iran. >> so i do think iran will likely amp up it through its proxies. of course, the us has condemned the strikes as

hyde street pier will be torn out sometime this year. four of the ships at the pier will set sail for vallejo for several years. the pier has been a san francisco fixture since the late 1800s. congress has approved $102 million plan for improvements. the rebuild is expected to take about three years to complete. >> new developments this morning , boeing will conduct more inspections of its 737 airplanes. the commercial airplane company will inspect the installation of its planes, door plugs manufactured by spirit aerosystems. the announcement comes after the faa grounded all max nine planes after a door plug blew out during the flight. it happened earlier this month during an alaska airlines flight carrying 177 passengers from oregon to california. thankfully no one on board was hurt. >> u.s. military forces are set to deploy to the region of japan, hit hardest by a new year's day earthquake. details

moisture is evaporating. before itrillioneaches, the ground. it's the cold front back here that is really going to bring us the showers this afternoon and this evening and create a slick and slower evening commute. that's your biggest impact with this level one light storm on the abc seven storm impact scale, light showers and some isolated downpours for the second half of our day, here's future weather. we'll get you into lunchtime showers now arriving in the north bay and along the coast. we'll have those showers become more widespread later on this afternoon. here's 4:00 pm on future weather. and then this evening. this is the cold front by 8 p.m. that will bring some isolated downpours laws through about 9:10 p.m. tonight. rainfall estimates. we'll see anywhere from about a third to up to maybe a half of an inch in some spots, a little bit higher in areas where we see those downpours linger just a little bit longer. highs today, we'll find those temperatures in the mid 50s and low 60s as we track those showers later on overnight tonight, the showers get out of here. we'll keep some of the cloud cover and temperatures really remaining in the 40s. we're keeping a close eye on the weekend. just want to give you a
