we're all having a good time together. >> reporter: florida governor ron desantis staked his entire campaign on the state, coming in a distant second. but edging out former south carolina governor nikki haley. >> in spite of all of that that they threw at us, every one against us, we've got our ticket punched out of iowa! >> reporter: haley, who was betting on a strong finish to launch her into new hampshire, falling short and into third. >> our campaign is the last best hope of stopping the trump/biden nightmare. >> reporter: it was the lowest caucus turnout in 25 years. those determined to show up braving subzero life threatening temperatures and dangerous driving conditions. >> it's been difficult, but we persevere and those who persevere to the end, they're gonna win. >> reporter: iowa rarely takes the eventual republican nominee, but the caucuses often narrow the field.

trump was quick to suggest it's time for his rivals to get out of the race. >> we want to come together, whether it's republican or democrat or liberal or conservative. it would be so nice if we could come together and straighten out the world. >> reporter: noments later one republican did drop out. vivak ramaswamy who drew attention for his brash style on the debate stage, conspiracy theories, suspending his campaign and endorsing trump. >> earlier tonight i called donald trump to tell him i congratulate him on his victory and now going forward, he will have my full endorsement for the presidency. and i think we're going to do the right thing for this country. >> reporter: trump did not stick around long to celebrate that victory in iowa. in fact, he flew overnight to new york. he's expected to appear in court today in that defamation case involving e. jean carroll. the former president splitting his time between the campaign trail and courtroom. robin? >> as you flew overnight to be in new hampshire. glad that you did.

thank you very much, rachel. we're going to bring in our political director rick klein to break down the results. good morning, rick. >> good morning, robin. this was an absolute blowout. a romp across the state. whether it was urban, rural, it almost didn't matter when it came to donald trump. he won 98 of iowa's 99 counties. the only one he lost, he lost by a single vote. this was utter domination. for him to get an absolute majority of the state wide vote is stunning and a big surprise blowing away the previous record. now, the battle for second, ron desantis captured it, but very narrowly. he needed this kind of showing. little disappointment for nikki haley. it's worth pointing out, robin, we're talking about a small turnout. only about 110 people showed up. way off all the predictions had been. as the candidates head to new hampshire, it is a much bigger electorate and a larger electorate. lot more independent voters. big opportunity for nikki haley, who's been close in the poll, to make the race closer if not actually challenging donald trump. >> 110,000 people.

far smaller than a congressional district. at least among these conservative iowa voters trump has bent them to his views on the 2020 election. >> yeah. this is stunning. out of our entrance poll, caucus goer, two-thirds of people who voted yesterday on the republican caucuses said they don't think joe biden legitimately won the election. and another two-thirds of those same voters think president trump would be fit to serve in office even if convicted. remember, trump got about 51%. so this means even people that voted against him yesterday still think he would be fit to serve as president even if convicted of a crime. george? >> okay, rick. thanks. let's bring in jon karl. about as good a night as donald trump could want. >> for donald trump, this was the perfect night. not only did he win, with more than 50% of the vote, but his opposition is divided, george. between haley and desantis you had about 40% of voting for somebody who wasn't trump. look, they are so close. this gives both of them a reason to stay in this race.

we've seen what's happened. they go after each other far more viciously, with far more rigor than they go after donald trump. as they fight each other, he's marching towards the nomination. let's keep in mind what you said in the beginning. one state has voted. only 110,000 people. there's a long way to go. but for donald trump, he now has a one big victory and he has his opponents continuing to be divided. >> could be on track to wrap this up by early march? >> absolutely. march 5th you have super tuesday. he could have effectively not clinched it, in terms of outright clinch, but be the effective nominee. he's got new hampshire. that's one state where it looks like, in terms of polling anyway, he could be beaten. but everywhere else nationally, he is the dominant force in the republican party. >> between now and march though cascade of more legal appearances and legal decisions that could affect the general election. >> yeah. so this is the thing. donald trump can still be

beaten, as we said, only one state has voted. but if he's going to be beaten, he's going to have to beat himself. there's no evidence that his opponents have what it takes to take him on. there's no evidence of that yet. we'll see nikki haley, could pull out a victory in new hampshire. new hampshire is a state where independents can vote in the republican primary. it's one state where trump seem likes he is vulnerable. goes after that to nevada and south carolina. south carolina, which is where nikki haley was governor, trump is perhaps even more dominant than iowa. >> jon karl, thank you very much. robin? >> all right, george. now to this dangerous blast of winter across the country with snow, ice and brutal temperatures stretching across the middle of the country. even single digit wind chills in the deep south. trevor ault is in morris town, new jersey, for us. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. we are seeing the crews already hard at work this morning in morris county. they are taking all this salt. you can see the salt trucks

loading up, ready to go out this morning. they're expecting 3 to 5 inches of snow, mixing with the freezing rain. we know across the country the problem a ton of americans are dealing with this morning. overnight a bitter arctic blast of snow on the move leaving more than 200 million americans under alert from louisiana to the northeast. 23 states impacted as a winter storm pummels through. across the region, ice and snow coated roads creating a dangerous commute this morning. >> they're coming down. >> reporter: heavy lake effect snow coming down on the greater buffalo area. snow and ice wreaking havoc in the south. >> bad shape right there. >> reporter: in knoxville, tennessee, a multivehicle crash on i 75 leaving one dead. authorities there say a box truck rear ended a tractor trailer after losing control in the snow. near cedar rapids, iowa, several trucks crashing along major

interstates. in alabama, this truck swerving. this one shutting down i-10 after overturning near houston, texas. >> really bad. yeah, do not drive at all. not worth it. >> reporter: this light house along lake michigan encased in ice because of the bitter cold and wind. 3,000 flights were cancelled yesterday. there's already several hundred more cancellations today. what's making things worse on the roads are the temperatures. it's going to be getting freezing cold. it could be quite icy. that's why it's so important to get out in front of this. >> that is so important, trevor. thank you. now alex perez on the deep freeze that is gripping chicago. good morning to you, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. feel-like temperature here in chicago right now, brutal. about 30 degrees below zero. it's the kind of cold that is very very dangerous. officials are warning people to limit their time outside. if you do gotta get outside and into your car, aaa does have a few tips that remind us most

let's talk about the storm in the northeast. cities like washington, d.c., baltimore, philadelphia, all ended their snow drought. new york city, the clock is still on. as the storm continues to move north this afternoon, anywhere along i 95 from new jersey up into providence, we could see some icing, about a tenth of an inch. by 10 p.m. tonight this storm is exiting stage left through maine. things could dry out. but not before dumping an additional 1 to 3 inches generally where we could see frost up in maine. 6 to 12 inches of snow. gio? >> 6 to 12 inches. all right. thank you. we're going to turn to breaking news concerning a collision between passenger planes on a tarmac in japan. let's go to james longman who is tracking the latest developments. this comes a few weeks after that fiery plane crash in japan. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, gio. two passenger jets have collided at an airport in japan, just two weeks after that tragedy you mentioned that killed five people. this happened at 5:30 p.m. on an

island north of japan. officials say two planes came into what they call contact on the ground. this is a cafe pacific airliner and korean air jet. you can see pretty bad damage to one of the wings. visibility at that airport is very very poor. it is freezing cold there. it is snowy. that might have had something to do with it. this is happening during the investigation. horrific crash in tokyo. people remember when that coast guard plane came onto the runway just as a passenger jet was coming down to land. very sadly, five of those on board that coast guard jet were killed. miraculously all 379 of those on board the japan airlines plane, they made it out alive. george? >> thank goodness for that. tensions rising in the middle east after deadly explosions rock an iraqi city not far from the u.s. consulate. iran's revolutionary tkpwar took credit claiming they were targeting the headquarters of spies. matt gutman is tracking the latest from israel. good morning, matt.

>> reporter: good morning, george. that's right. iran's guard saying they fired ballistic missiles at what they call israeli spy facilities. iraq saying that's baseless. the explosions killing four civilians just outside the u.s. consulate. no damage to u.s. assets reported. but this is part of this escalation regionally that we've been seeing in recent days by iranian backed proxies including lebanon, hezbollah, the houthis in yemen. direct action by iranian forces themselves is more unusual. that comes as we're right outside gaza, amid the growing desperation there. the u.n. describing collective punishment against the palestinians. now israel's defense minister in a nationally televised speech saying the intensive phase of fighting in the northern part of the gaza strip is now over and will soon be over in the southern part of the gaza strip. he is also now calling for a diplomatic path forward. guys? >> all right, matt. we appreciate your reporting there. we're going to switch gears to

following a lot of headlines and donald trump's win in iowa. donald trump is expected to be in a manhattan federal court today as the civil trial for defaming writer e. jean carroll begins. it's about damages now. the judge cleared the way for trump to testify. carroll won $5 million accusing the former president of battery and defamation last year. trump denies wrongdoing and is appealing. apple is planning to remove the blood oxygen feature from its watch after a dispute. the company briefly stopped selling certain models of the device last month. they will remove the tool to get around an import ban. george has questions. we have answers. yesterday we told you about the supersonic jet nasa developed with lockheed martin. it's supposed to fly 925 miles per hour without creating that loud sonic boom. it does not have a front facing window. george asked how that prevents a sonic boom? of course, we went to lockheed martin to find out.

this morning those chilly moments authorities say a man breached security at salt lake city international airport, running right onto the tarmac and into a plane's engine later dying. in this dramatic surveillance video obtained by salt lake city fox affiliate from new year's day. the 30-year-old is seen trying to open the door at an empty gate. only a maintenance worker there. he then runs to another gate pulling on that door throwing his shoe at the window before finding an emergency exit and making his way down a stairwell and onto the air field. his father telling abc news his son, who suffered from mental health issues, was heading to colorado but got held up going through security causing him to miss his flight. police saying a store manager first alerted authorities to a disturbance involving a passenger. >> white male individual

harassing his employees and accusing them of stealing his bag. male wearing a yellow jersey, brown pants with no shoes. >> reporter: salt lake city police responding, but they say they initially couldn't locate him. cameras capturing him running toward a delta flight sitting on the deicing pad before taking off to san francisco. >> contacted aircraft to shut the engine down. >> reporter: just minutes later police founding him in the engine's intake area unconscious, unable to revive him. police speaking with abc affiliate ktbx earlier this month. >> the exact stage of the engine's operation remain under investigation. but the air blades were circulating when officers arrived on the scene. >> reporter: now questions about how the 30-year-old was able to get to the tarmac so easily. >> there wasn't anybody on surveillance video. there wasn't anybody with responsibility for security in the hallways that saw him after he made several attempts to get out of doors that were protected by pad keys.

>> going forward, he will have my full endorsement for the presidency. i think we're going to do the right thing for this country. >> reporter: trump didn't stay long in iowa. in fact, he flew straight to new york. he's expected to appear in court later today in that defamation case involving writer e. jean carroll before coming right back to new hampshire for an event later today. george? >> thanks. we'll look at what the results mean for president biden's campaign. chief white house correspondent mary bruce is covering that. good morning, mary. a preview with an interview with vice president kamala harris. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. while republicans were casting their first votes in iowa, i spent the day going behind the scenes with the vice president as she campaigned in the first democratic primary state of south carolina. kamala harris has been taking on an expanded role in this campaign, crisscrossing the country and hammering their central message in this campaign. their argument the future of america and democracy is what's at stake in this election. i asked her if she thinks all of the republican candidates pose the same risk and if she thinks we are headed toward a biden/trump rematch.

she recognizes they have more work to do. she says they have to take -- they can't take any vote for granted telling me they have to earn this re-election. george? >> mary, thanks. you can see more of mary's interview tonight on abc news live primetime. robin? the other big story, the dangerous blast of winter weather across the country. snow, ice, brutal temperatures. we're gonna go back to trevor ault in morris town, new jersey. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning again, robin. we've been watching the crews very hard at work. they've been bringing the salt trucks and loading up with all this salt taking it on the road. they are expecting 3 to 5 inches of snow today and some freezing rain mixed in. we are already seeing the roads are pretty treacherous. they could get worse. that's something a lot of americans are dealing with this morning. we're talking about 20 states from louisiana up to maine that are now under alert. that's impacting 60 million people. there have already been several instances of vehicles losing control. there have even been some deadly crashes.

temperatures could be exacerbating the problem. just here in new jersey as the temperatures fall, you can tell the snow is not really coming down. with temperatures in the 20s, we're getting some freezing rain. that is a very bad recipe because that rainfall comes down. it freezes on the roads. it can be very icy. it's so important for crews to get the salt on the road ahead of time to try to make it safe. gio? >> so many dealing with that. trevor, thank you very much. we're going to turn to the new report concerning how ai could impact your job. elizabeth schulze joins us to break it all down. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning. this is an ominous warning of how artificial intelligence can transform the way we work. a new report finds up to 40% of all jobs around the world could be affected by ai. how much your job might change depends on the kind of work that you do. so for example, higher skilled worker, think of tech jobs that require you to analyze data, are at risk of getting replaced by ai.

[ laughter ] what is behind this? >> simply put, people are just fed up, right? how many times have you gone through the self-checkout lane, machine tells you you haven't placed the item in the same spot, even though you did. then the issue of inventory lost, things stolen or just

missing. hard working cashier, they're making a come back. self-checkout. you either love it or -- >> i hate it. i hate it. >> if i'm going to do the work, give me a discount. >> reporter: this morning several major retailers are listening and re-evaluating their self-checkouts. some business analysts pointing less to customer satisfaction and more to inventory loss as part of the problem. >> the technology that is powering self-checkouts is also layering in other technology like ai, that's monitoring the customer that's checking out the products. >> reporter: one industry survey found self-checkout represented 30% of transactions in 2021 and that 96% of food retailers surveyed offered it at their store. but with them come complaints of tech glitches. >> there's always one item that doesn't scan. then the light goes from green to yellow above you. >> reporter: in personal experience. >> lot of us want a human being. we want to have that

conversation. we want to be able to voice our concerns or ask a question about our products. >> reporter: and long lines. so even here at the grocery store, this line, this is all for self-checkout. you're still going to have to wait in line. target stores now limiting the number of items at self-checkouts to shorten those wait times. dollar general plans to ramp up its employee presence at the front of the stores, noting the convenience of self-checkout of some customers but says it does not reduce the importance of a friendly helpful employee who is there to greet customers and assist while the checkout process is happening. >> people want that interaction. >> reporter: river town iga, a small ohio grocer just outside cincinnati, they have two self-checkout stations but say they pride themselves on their personal check-ins from their cashier. >> our self-checkout is just an option. if you don't want to use it, please go see the regular cashiers because they're going

to know you, know your family, know what you usually shop for. they're gonna talk about the towns go sill. they're our friends. >> reporter: it's all about the gossip, right? the consumers we spoke with do say self-checkout is convenient for one or two things but say they really enjoy having that personal interaction with a cashier. i gotta tell you, i always choose the human line. tends to be shorter. >> i love what she said. i love a chatty cashier. >> get to know what's going on around town. personal touch. >> if it's one or two items, possibly. but just miss that human touch. >> absolutely. >> thank you, guys. >> we're going to turn to our parenting play book. we start with sleepovers. an article says parents are taking a whole new approach to them. erika souter and dr. edith bracho-sanchez. let me begin with you. what we're talking about today is sleep unders. >> we are talking about sleepunders. great option for parents who aren't comfortable with their kids staying the entire night. they pick up their kid at 1, 2

a.m. they can enjoy time with their friends. parents are taking this option more and more since the pandemic because they want their kids to stay connected to part of a group and to have friends. >> how about 11 or 12? >> 11 or 12. it works. also a great option for parents who culturally don't understand or agree with the idea of a sleepover. for lot of people it's something they never did, their parents never let them do. this is a good compromise. it works in my house. >> i have such great childhood memories of my sleepovers. i still have ptsb from arguing with my kids about going to sleepovers. i understand it. what is the right age to let kids start doing the sleepover? let's start with you, edith. >> there's really not a right age per se. you have to know your child. there are 6-year-olds who are ready, who can advocate for themselves.

we have to remember, do they want to do this? just like there are 13-year-olds who are not ready for this. they are not able to advocate for themselves. you have to know your child. >> okay. you say consistent sleep rituals are important. >> absolutely. this goes after the notion of when they're ready. lots of sleep away camps or boy scouts or girl scouts start around 8 or 9. thinking about sleepovers. this is how you stage kids being ready for these things. parents can go through sleep rituals at home. here's what it might look like if you're in a new place. try to gauge the kid's comfort level and what they might be ready for. >> let's talk about preparing kids for sleepovers. >> you want to teach your kids body boundaries. what's okay and what's not okay. it's important they know they have an out. right? they can have a safe word. i love this idea. call to say good night to your kid. if they use the safe word. maybe it's like, i didn't bring my teddy bear. then you know, i'm going to call

that mom and say alex should come home. >> we used to have a code word. one of my daughters would say, call up and say it's time for me to come home. >> yeah. i love that it's been a big trend of tik tok and instagram, right. i had a mom and daughter who had a code. the daughter would say, i'm having so much fun. the mom knew it was time to get them. >> i think that's a great, great tip. we did not have a code word. i want to read this. almost half of parents in the u.s. describe themselves as overprotective according to some new research. what are the important questions to ask before a sleepover so that you, the parent, can sleep at night? unless you're doing the sleep under and you're picking them up at 1 a.m.? >> there's so many things parents should be aware of. are there guns in the house? is the liquor locked up? who will be there all night? >> that's the number one question for me. >> are parents going to be supervising? will older siblings be there? it's about your comfort as well. you should also be honest with that sleepover host parent about

your anxiety, and your kid's anxiety. so they know what's going on. >> i see you nodding your head over that anxiety question. >> those are great points about how you be honest with the other parent about what you're going through. but then i think it's also about parents saying, now that i have taken care of those variables, how do i relax myself? for some parents maybe relaxation is an option. for others it might just be riding the wave, just waiting for the kid to come back and saying to yourself, i might not feel comfortable the whole time they're away. >> any other advice for parents? >> it's really about preparing our kids and ourselves as parents what's going to help us? what's going to set them up for success and make sure they are safe as possible? knowing there's no such thing as a situation where there is zero risk. >> thank you very much. let's go to somara. >> good morning, everyone. we did it, new york. 701 days since we have seen an inch of snow. no more. the snow drought now ends. all right. that couldn't be done without cold air. look at these numbers.

11 glorious seasons, 28 emmy wins. one of the great shows in television history. and, of course, we lost one of its stars kirstie alley earlier this year. >> it was a great idea. >> it was a well done show. what about the fashion, you ask? can't talk about an awards show without mentioning the red carpet fashion. changing gears seeming to inspire some of the choices by stars like hannah wattingham. in marchesa. >> wow. >> she looked stunning. selena gomez looked just gorgeous posing alongside her only murders in the building steve martin and martin short. my vote for best dressed ariana debose. i love this look. effortlessly chic. the long jacket. the long skirt.

>> so basically we've got broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, squash one of my favorites all time. >> hard to find? >> not really hard to find. the beauty is you don't have to peel it. just wash it and cut it. you can put it in the oven just like that. it's so good. it's got a natural flavor. >> that sweet potato. >> sweet potatoes, of course. i always do chicken breast. i do ground beef or ground bison. you can do ground turkey. this is sort of my go to every sunday. i spend about 1.5 hour, 2 hour max and i make food for monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday. >> then you play on friday. >> right. >> you're going to show us two recipes. the first is using your chicken. talk about this chicken stir fry. >> this is a chicken stir fry. because everything is cooked already in your fridge ready to rock. you do it sunday. for dinners, this is the easiest thing to do. right? >> when you say cooked, do you mean baked? roast? >> i roast everything at 425

degrees with a little olive oil and salt. >> i'm totally doing this. i'm excited. >> it's so easy. >> okay. all right. >> okay. so, dinnertime, you don't have a lot of time. you're running around. you come home. you got the family. you take your cooked chicken in a pan, right? >> yep. >> hear that sizzle. >> put me to work. >> dump these in there. we got sweet potato, some squash. all right. cauliflower in there. >> it's whatever you want. >> literally, whatever you want. >> little asparagus. gorgeous. >> you got cooked rice. >> would you put that in there? >> add rice to it, if you want. or put the rice as a base then put the ingredients on top. >> i'm a fan of that. you're just warming it up. olive oil. >> that's all you're doing. you're literally warming it up. add a little teriyaki sauce. you can add hoisen sauce. i typically think of stir fry with asian influence so i kind of like a teriyaki sauce. >> yep. look at that. that finished plate is gorgeous. it couldn't be easier because we did it on sunday.

>> that was it. >> all right. now we've got the ground beef we made sunday. put in the fridge. let's take it out for tuesday. go. >> one thing i want to mention with ground beef i like to use a 93% lean ground beef so it's not filled with a ton of fat. you have a nice lean ground beef. this is a quesadilla. my wife loves these. my kids love these. sweet potatoes in there. ground beef. >> ground beef is always a winner. >> then zucchini. >> you have a different take on the quesadilla. >> you put it on there. you have a tortilla. you can use small tortillas, a larger one. you kind of just spread it out with cheese. got melted cheese. >> you start with cheese, in case you didn't see that. >> i start with cheese. put more cheese on the top. >> oh. >> you like that? fine. there you go. check out the finished product. right there. >> that's the finished product. it is insanely delicious and incredibly healthy.

we are back with an extreme avalanche danger after a series of deadly snow slides across multiple states. we're getting a look at video showing just how dangerous conditions are right now. our senior meteorologist rob marciano is in colorado with that very important story for us.

good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning, robin. from 9,200 feet on the other side of the continental divide where there is a lot of snow, new york city finally got a few inches of snowfall. here in parts of colorado, over 6 feet of snow has fallen just in the last 15 days. that comes after a very dry and sunny december that has really baked down some pack. it has yielded a series of avalanches across the west in the past week. >> there goes! oh yeah. >> these are the types of avalanches that catch, carry and kill people. >> reporter: this morning avalanche forecasters sounding the alarm. conditions are ripe for more dangerous snow slides across the west. >> this is to show you how hair trigger and dangerous the back country right now is. >> reporter: this urgent warning as avalanche season is well under way, with three people killed so far this 2024.

in colorado, a highway was shut down after ten cars were buried sunday. one man was killed and three injured during an avalanche in lake tahoe, california, last week. people stopping to help dig out their fellow skiers. >> snow actually has layers. if you end up with a layering scenario where you have the weak underlying strong, you have kind of recipe for an instability. >> reporter: it's these conditions that put skiers at risk for avalanches. >> avalanche wall to wall. two to four feet deep. what it's failing on is this fast snow from 25 days of sunny skies, clear cold nights. >> reporter: another factor could be climate change. >> climate change is impacting avalanche cycles. exactly how it's impacting them or what we're going to see in the future, that's much less clear. >> reporter: jenna was buried in

the tahoe avalanche. she stumbled roughly 150 feet down the mountain with only her foot visible above the snow. >> i heard somebody say, don't worry, i got you. those were the best words i heard in my life. >> reporter: that is absolutely terrifying. one of my worst fears, to be buried in an avalanche. danger once again. they are saying don't go in the back country at all until this snow stablizes. certainly bring a buddy in. bring an avalanche beacon so you can find your friends if an avalanche occurs. pack up one of these probes. you can probe, quite frankly, for your friends. once you find them, dig them out with one of these. these are life saving tools you hope you never have to have. now that it's been snowing in

the east, put one of these in the trunk of your car not a bad idea either. >> that's great advice all the way around. probably saved some lives with what you just reported on and shared. thank you very much, rob. appreciate it. let's go to somara who is in for ginger. >> good morning, robin. all right. in parts of colorado, they've seen 5.5 feet of snow in the last ten days. they're taking advantage of that in colorado. also getting nice time on the snow in loveland ski area. as rob mentioned, the threat for avalanches still loom. that's going to be around through thursday. a level four out of five. extremely precarious situation if you're trekking through back country from steamboat springs, vail, into aspen. they could pick up 6 to 12 inches, maybe a foot or more of snow. that's a look at your forecast. now a check closer to home.

>> i'm here with the author who wrote "the silent patient." now he is back with "the fury." welcome. number one new york times best selling author. tell us about the new one. >> the new one is about a movie star who invites her best friends to spend easter with her on a private greek island. they get trapped there because of bad weather. then there's a murder. that's just the beginning. what i really wanted to do was take that classic terror of people being trapped. and then tip it on its head. i had so much fun coming up with twists and turns. i probably had more fun writing this than anything i have done. >> why is that? >> i think i changed the way that i wrote, really. i wanted to try and surprise myself so i didn't plan it the way i did with my first two books. i just told myself a story. i wrote the whole thing with a smile on my face. it was great. >> it's also quite personal. you were born in cyprus. you have greek roots. you draw on that in this. >> absolutely. that part of the world is magical and mystical. the best part of being there is

to go around the greek islands. the idea for the book came to me about 20. i'm sure you know, george, the winds can be quite crazy in the greek islands. i was on the islands and i was trapped there once for three days because the wind was so bad they couldn't get a boat to cross. that's when my first thought, that's a great way to trap people on an island. i thought, if you throw in movie stars and a murder, it will be a fun book to write. >> you dedicate this to uma thurman. you say she was inspirational to your writing career? >> she was a big part of my writing, yes. we met several years ago on a film i was working on, screen writer. i was writing a book at the time. uma taught me so much about visual story telling. she's just incredible. i went back to london and i rewrote the book from page 1. that book was "the silent patient." i owe uma a great deal. back then i thought, i want to try and write something for her one day. >> she may be in it. >> fingers crossed. i hope so. >> okay.
