snowfall average and below zero wind chill temperatures are expected again this morning in the northeast. >> two weather related deaths in new jersey. that region is now bracing for even more snow on friday. >> we begin right now in the south this morning. the record setting arctic blast gripping much of the country has turned deadly in the south. at least six people have now died in tennessee as a result of the extreme conditions. 11in of snow falling in knoxville, wind chills plunging to 15 below zero. in alabama, ice covered roads made driving nearly impossible. all these cars left stranded after sliding off the road. this tractor trailer outside birmingham swerving in all directions before jackknifing into the guardrail, and this truck sliding down a driveway after it was put in park in chicago, where it felt like 30 below zero. fires were lit under these train tracks to keep them free of snow and ice. tesla vehicles were lining up at this charging station in chicago. owners say they had trouble charging their batteries in the extreme cold. at least

ten electric cars were reportedly towed from this charging station in the rockies. new avalanche warnings in colorado after a series of deadly snow slides in neighboring states. new video shows the moment bob tillotson was rescued from an avalanche in utah. rescuers digging through feet of snow, finally saving tillotson after about 15 minutes. but it appears no one can match buffalo for snowfall totals. another three feet of lake effect snow is expected by tomorrow night, on top of the 40in that forced the bills game to be postponed over the weekend. meanwhile in the nation's capital, fun and games on the national mall as people enjoyed a rare blast of winter. it's a lot of fun. >> i've been waiting a long time . >> more bitter cold extends from the midwest to the deep south this morning, and the midwest and northeast could see more snow by this weekend. we'll check your forecast in a few minutes. >> now to the race for the white house. former president trump is launching new attacks against former south carolina governor

nikki haley. just six days before the new hampshire primary. here's abc's lionel moise this morning. >> debate canceled thursday's gop primary debate in new hampshire scrapped after nikki haley pulled out, saying she'd only attend if former president trump was also on stage. >> that's who i'm running against. there is nobody else i need to debate. i have had five strong debates and have done plenty of them, he can't hide forever. >> trump fresh off his landslide win in iowa, now focusing his attacks on haley, who's been surging in the polls in new hampshire. trump last night hitting haley on taxes and social security. >> she's not tough enough. nikki haley supported a brutal 23% national sales tax, which is a disaster, by the way. why she did it. and that's why some people will call her the nikki new tax. i don't i don't think that's particularly good. >> haley's campaign slamming trump, depicting him as a bully and a liar. meanwhile ron desantis, after his second place

>> today, trump is expected back in a new york courtroom for his defamation trial involving writer e jean carroll. she is expected to take the stand. the jury is deciding whether damages should be awarded for comments. trump made about carroll's sexual assault allegations. he was already found liable for sexually abusing her. rhiannon andrew lionel. >> thank you. the biden administration is expected to relist yemen's houthi rebels as a terrorist group after the u.s. carried out a new airstrike against them, destroying more missiles. this latest strike is in response to a series of attacks on commercial ships in the red sea, impacting global trade. the houthis are supported by iran, the ceo of chevron warns oil prices could rise quickly if the attacks lead to a major disruption in shipments. new help for israeli hostages being held by hamas for more than 100 days now, the government of qatar says a deal has been reached to deliver medicine to the hostages. it comes after israel confirmed the deaths of two hostages seen in a recent hamas video. the agreement, reached by qatar also

provides more aid for gaza. >> we turn now to the migrant crisis, which is also a housing crisis in several big cities. the extreme winter weather only adding to the challenges this morning. abc news is streaming channel abc news live getting an exclusive look at a new york city migrant shelter that houses mothers and their children seeking asylum. we're at capacity for everyone. >> we really don't have any room at all, christine quinn, who's organized nation, runs the shelter, says most of those staying here do not qualify for housing benefits or food stamps, making it difficult for them to move out and provide for their families. >> and now, with the bitter winter cold settling in, many are unprepared. these families came to us and continue to come with the t shirt on their back and the flip flops on their feet. >> they're not ready for snow. they don't have winter jackets. new york's governor yesterday

requested more than $2 billion to provide housing and health care for the roughly 70,000 migrants currently in the state. >> many of them sent by bus from texas. >> it's the right thing to do for the migrants and for the city of new york to continue focusing on securing work authorization and put the migrants and asylum workers to work in illinois, the governor has announced $17 million in new funds for chicago's suburbs that agreed to house migrants who hundreds have been sleeping on city busses to keep warm. >> many arrived wearing only shorts and t shirts. migrant crossings at the u.s. southern border hit a record high last month. today, president biden is meeting with congressional leaders urging them to pass new border security funds, part of a $106 billion funding request that also includes money for the wars in ukraine and gaza. as part of that spending plan, republicans have demanded stricter asylum laws and also

expanded deportation stations. >> jetblue and spirit are deciding whether to appeal a federal judge's decision, blocking their $3.8 billion merger. the justice department opposed the deal, saying it would lead to higher airfares. jetblue and spirit insist they need help competing with bigger airlines. >> a ten year old from maryland is the latest visitor to the bahamas to be bitten by a shark. police say the boy was injured during a shark tank expedition at a resort on paradise island. he is reportedly in stable condition this morning and just last month, a massachusetts woman was killed by a shark in the bahamas. >> time now for your wednesday weather. good >> waking up below zero again today from chicago back to omaha, wake up weather will be the same in new york city as it will be in houston, texas. 19 degrees. watch out for slick spots on the roads. meantime, today will be dry and cool for most of the country. some lake effect snow and some ice. this morning in portland, oregon, our

200 years. the two cicada broods are expected to hit illinois and indiana the hardest. >> a new evidence has been revealed in the case against the suspected gilgo beach serial killer in new york, but prosecutors say the investigation isn't over yet. here's abc's andrea fujii this morning. >> the accused serial killer charged with murdering three women in new york is now charged with killing a fourth. the victim's daughter, speaking publicly for the first time. while the loss of my mom has been extremely painful for me, the indictment by the grand jury has brought hope for justice for my mom and my family. maureen brainard barnes went missing in 2007 while working as an escort. her body was found near three other women buried near gilgo beach on long island, new york. rex huberman was already charged in the deaths of megan waterman, amber costello and melissa barthelemy. they were known as the gilgo four. as their deaths went unsolved for more than a decade, there are countless times i needed her and she was not there.

>> i remember she read to me every night and now i can no longer remember the sound of her voice. >> now, prosecutors have revealed how they were able to link huberman to brain ard barnes. >> the biggest change is the dna evidence, they say. >> investigators followed huberman's daughter, who was not implicated in any of the killings, and were able to extract her dna from a discarded drink which linked human to the murder. >> the hair that was found on, uh, brainard barnes. it was found on the buckle of the belt that secured her lower body. >> but prosecutors say the investigation is far from over. they say they've scoured electronic devices from huberman's home and office, including two burner phones. they say he used to contact sex workers as recently as last year, while also searching for and for information of the deceased victims. huberman has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges. six other bodies were found near gilgo beach. authorities say it's unclear if huberman was involved in those unsolved cases. his next court date is february 6th. rhiannon
