well, it looks like we're having some technical. >> good morning to you. it is wednesday, january. >> it is wednesday, january 7th. >> let's talk about the forecast, shall we guys. we will take you to a live picture outside. this is san jose where we have mostly cloudy conditions out there. the roads are damp of the showers are gone. however we do have some fog to deal with. it is dense in some spots in petaluma we're down to zero miles. visibility conquered a little bit less than two miles, so areas near the delta and in the north bay. we do have some low level moisture and some cloud cover first thing, but temperatures are in the low and mid 50s currently, so it's not too chilly out there. here's how the day shapes up. we'll have partly sunny skies here. brighter conditions throughout the afternoon. those temperatures are very pleasant. we'll get into the upper 50s and lower 60s. rain is back by the end of the week. we'll show you that coming up in a few minutes. but first, let's check in with sue and see how we're doing with traffic this morning. hi, sue.

>> good morning drew, and we're taking a look outside in san jose where as you can see, it's getting a little bit lighter and some slick roads. the biggest issue this morning after overnight rain and some standing water. also thick fog that drew's been talking about and it's patchy. so you may come up on it pretty quickly. this is highway 87 with those tail lights headed up towards the san jose airport. you can see the runway lights at the top of your screen, and we'll hop over to 101 in san jose. tail lights headed south, headlights headed north, and the overcrossing is 880 and all lanes are moving at the limit with no delay. we do have a delay with bart. they are experiencing major delay, which means more than 20 minutes on the millbrae line due to an equipment problem in south san francisco. so heads up bart slowing also due to wet tracks as well. >> so sue, thank you to fight a rise in violent crime, oakland is looking to resurrect a gun violence prevention program that ended before the pandemic, and new data from an audit is

helping the cause. abc seven news reporter lena howland is here to talk about it. lena, reggie, that new audit says the program, known as operation ceasefire, saved lives. >> it was introduced ten years ago and became a national model for tackling gun violence. it focused attention on a small group of individuals and gangs, and also established programs like job training, counseling and social services. the audit, done in collaboration with several groups, suggests that the data driven operation ceasefire worked. according to the city of oakland, there was a 42% drop in homicides from 2012 to 2017. they say that means around 140 lives saved. but then came the pandemic and shift away from ceasefire. for james burch, with the anti-police terror project, says he supports the comeback of ceasefire. >> they would be looking at best practices from across the country to ensure that the programs that are invested in and implemented in the city of oakland are based on the best

available data. >> they, um, proceed to kind of really posture and kind of threaten them that if they don't change their behavior, that there's going to be that they're going to be, you know, held accountable. >> but but not everyone wants to see the return of the program. george galvez, the executive director of communities united for restored of justice, says, among other things, the program unfairly targeted black and brown men. former oakland mayor libby schaaf, who was in office when operation ceasefire ended, tweeted yesterday that while she thinks the audit failed to consider the pandemic's impact on crime in the city, she supports the efforts to revitalize the program in studio. lena howland abc seven news. >> lena, thank you so much. a water main break is to blame for a sinkhole in san francisco's financial district. take a look at this video right here. water from the pipe shot up to ten feet into the air after the break at california and montgomery streets overnight. the sinkhole is right next to a cable car line, but the line

does not appear to be affected. nearby homes and businesses may experience low water pressure or service interruptions as crews repair that break and city workers are inspecting trees in golden gate park after a massive eucalyptus tree fell onto five vehicles. you can see the tree right there. the incident happened on monday, trapping 11 people in their cars, and it's not clear how long the process will take as the city's tree crew consists of only 25 people and there are nearly 27,000 trees in golden gate park. experts say that trees of any age or species can fail, so proper maintenance is very important by taking off the weight of the branches. >> we like to say creating windows in a tree. it allows the wind to go through those branches and not put the pressure on on the branches. arbor ists say that eucalyptus trees are susceptible to falling because they are top heavy, and

their root system is shallow. >> in the south bay, drivers need to be prepared for some delays on one of the bay area's busiestrillionoadways because of lane restrictions, caltrans is going to be cleaning up highway 101 from 13th street in san jose all the way up to shoreline boulevard in mountain view. they'll be on the south bound side in the mornings and in the afternoon they'll go to the northbound side and the work will be going on each day this week, with a focus on the center divider and the shoulder. >> i know some some motorists probably see like these large weeds and the center divider or they see some, you know, debris from a crash or a blown out tire . our crews are going to go out there and they're going to clean all that up. >> the work is supposed to start at 9:00 this morning and wrap up by 4:00 this afternoon. if all goes as planned, caltrans will be done on friday. >> first lady doctor jill biden is in san francisco today as part of a west coast fundraising trip for her husband's campaign. she'll be at an event in the city today. she'll head to southern california later

tonight, and then return to the bay area tomorrow for another fundraiser in sonoma county. meanwhile, president biden is clearly watching the republican race after donald trump's victory in iowa. biden shared a message for the candidates. you know, it's kind of funny all these republican candidates in the primary trying to beat donald trump and i'm still the only person to ever beat donald trump. >> and i'm looking forward to it again for the good of this country. >> we republicans are now setting their sights on new hampshire with the next primary in less than a week. and speaking of new hampshire, tomorrow's plan republican primary debate isn't happening. >> that's because no one wants to go. the decision came after former president donald trump declined the offer to join former un ambassador nikki haley says she won't do it unless trump goes. so that only left florida governor ron desantis. and you can't debate yourself. trump who is fresh off his big win in iowa, is focusing his attacks on haley. she's been

surging in the polls in new hampshire after a third place showing in the hawkeye state. haley's campaign has slammed trump, calling him a bully and a liar. now, haley says she will only debate trump or president joe biden. >> that's who i'm running against. that's who i want. that's at the end of the day. he's the front runner. he's the one that i'm seven points away from. he's the one that we're fighting for. there is nobody else i need to debate. if he's on that stage, i'm there. >> both haley and ron desantis have vowed that they're going to stay in the game, despite their huge loss to trump in iowa. >> developing news out of washington, where capitol police are looking into a threat against east bay congressman eric swalwell by roger stone, who is an ally of donald trump. the fbi is also involved in the investigation that cnn says stems from a conversation that happened just before the 2020 election. in a recording, stone is reportedly heard telling an associate that swalwell or new york congressman jerry nadler has to die before the election.

both men are democrats. in a statement to mediaite stone denied making the comments. >> the race to represent california's 16th congressional district is heating up, with former san jose mayor sam liccardo winning a major endorsement. our local governments need a national partner so that we are addressing these issues from every angle and that partner is sam liccardo. liccardo is one of several candidates vying to take representative anna eschew seat. a political science expert from sdsu says liccardo, along with santa clara county supervisor joe simitian and state assembly member evan lowe, are emerging as favorites. that primary election is just around the corner. >> march 5th and still to come. some of the passengers on that now infamous alaska airlines flight are now suing the airline and boeing. what they're alleging in a new suit. >> and if you are flying out of

miles of san francisco. her body was found near the crash site the next day. the only other person on board has not been found. the san mateo county sheriff's office says the plane took off from the east bay. the ntsb is leading that investigation for passengers on board that alaska airlines flight. when the door panel blew out mid-air or you guessed it, suing the airline and boeing. the complaint accuses alaska airlines of flying the plane over land, even though the airline deemed that plane too unsafe to fly over the ocean. it also accuses boeing of delivering a faulty door plug. the passengers say they suffered from intense fear, distress and physical pain. boeing and alaska airlines are not commenting on that lawsuit. >> and a major change is in store at sfo. the airport commission voted unanimously to rename the international terminal after late california senator dianne feinstein.

afternoon. and today by 4 p.m. sunny, bright but it is pleasant out there. upper 50s to lower 60s. we get a dry day today. you don't need the umbrella. increasing sunshine and temperatures. pretty close to their daytime averages for this time of the year. overnight tonight we'll add cloud cover to the sky and we'll dip into the 40s and into the 50s. tomorrow is dry. our next front arrives here on friday evening. this is 5 p.m. it is a level one light system, but this will set the stage for several days of rain on the accuweather forecast. i'll show you the models into motion. i'll just let this thing go. there's friday, another storm saturday here comes another system on sunday lasting into monday. and then we get another one moving in here on tuesday. you get the picture. is that the rainfall totals will add up over the next 6 to 7 days. in fact, you look at some of these rainfall totals as we go throughout the friday to monday time frame. and you can see several inches in spots very likely. so we're watching northern california and especially the north bay very closely for the increased risk of heavy rainfall sunday. and

into monday. now for the niners game on saturday. i do think we will escape the heaviest rain, but we're allowing for a light shower, a kickoff temperature of 59 degrees, so certainly put that poncho in your bag. you may need it from time to time, but i think the heaviest rain is sunday and monday. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. clouds. the sun today. clouds return here tomorrow, but it's dry. showers are back friday evening and then we have that wet pattern developing sunday and monday level two's right now on the storm impact scale. sue. >> all right. >> we do have slick roads this morning to worry about for your drive. taking a look at the san mateo bridge. traffic is moving nicely. you're looking at about a 17 minute drive from 880 across the causeway on 92 and up the high rise over towards 101. no stalls or accidents to get in your way on the span itself over towards the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights turned on at about 535 this morning, and you can see the delays already building some brake lights on the span. you've got about an 11 minute delay from the back of the line all the way to the

development wants to convert the 19 story tower into 120 apartments with retail space on the ground floor. if approved, forge wants to start construction this year and open a residence in 2025. last year, city planning officials passed an office to residential conversion plan. 34% of downtown office space is now empty, with many employees are continuing to work from home post-pandemic. parking next to a crosswalk is now illegal, and drivers who don't follow the rule will begin getting warnings by transportation officials. the bill, signed into law earlier this month, says that you cannot park within 20ft of a crosswalk, whether it is marked or not, and residents tell abc seven that the new law makes parking even harder to find for drivers. but ricardo alejo's, with the sfmta says it's simply prioritizes pedestrian safety over parking by keeping away from the

crosswalk, you're allowing vehicles that are driving to get a better view of pedestrians that might be starting to cross the crosswalk. busses that start or end their route near a crosswalk will also be moved back 20ft, starting next year. the warnings will stop and then citations will be given out. the fine has not been determined yet. might be time to start rethinking that daily cup of oj. maybe eat a whole orange instead . drinking a glass or more than 100% fruit juice. it was linked to small weight gain in both children and adults, and that's according to a new analysis by medical journal jama pediatrics. doctors say it's likely because you can drink too much at once. whole fruits have natural sugar that slowly releases into the body, and over time, too much sugar in the blood has been shown to have negative health effects. next, at 630, a look at new renderings of what the housing complex at people's park is supposed to look like, and the neighbors in one vallejo

oakland cannabis business. cooper's attorney told abc seven his client did not have anything to do with the shooting, but may have been acting as a lookout during the burglary. cooper and the other three suspects are expected back in court tomorrow. >> there is a small rally over the future of people's park. yesterday's event was billed as an art build and took place on uc berkeley's campus. the rain might have played a role in the turnout, and meanwhile we're getting a better look at the proposal for the historic site, rendering show. two buildings on the site, most of the space dedicated to housing for students. currently, uc berkeley supplies housing for only about a quarter of its students, and spaces are also going to be used for about 100 people who were formerly unhoused. >> a new rule in san jose will ensure construction workers don't get cheated out of their hard earned wages, according to the mercury news. the new ordinance would stop developers with unpaid wage violations from building anything in san jose. that new law comes after the 2018 silver tower scandal, where

immigrant workers were forced to build luxury condos downtown. the new rule will go before the city council next week. new details this morning on an alarming explosion at an apartment complex in fremont. >> police say the blast came from a possible drug lab inside one of the units. some people are staying in hotels because of the chemical danger. a man checked himself into kaiser san leandro yesterday afternoon. the hospital says that when the patient arrived, a dozen staff members reported feeling nauseous. alameda county fire department hazmat team responded, prompting the emergency department to close. for about 4.5 hours. the substance is still under investigation. >> ian neighbors in vallejo are raising concerns over a water main break that's been leaking for weeks. the leak stretches for blocks on indiana street between sacramento and marin streets. sorry, i think we have the wrong video here. one neighbor says he reported about six weeks ago. sam kirshen says the water department told him

they don't have enough staffing to fix it. he says he has tried multiple times to get the city to make repairs. korshin says this resembles a long history of a lack of leadership from the city. >> there's a lot of procrastinate ation, uh- this city hires consultant to give them a solution. owens instead of using in-house people, they do everything they can to dance around an issue. >> neighbors are worried the entire street will flood if the leak doesn't get fixed soon. abc seven reached out to the mayor and other leaders, but we have not heard back. >> san francisco police chief william scott says he is not going to replace outgoing los angeles police chief michael moore. this comes after chief moore announced his retirement earlier this week. according to our media partners at the sf standard, chief scott says he is not interested in any other job. scott adds that he has important work to complete in the city he previously served for 27 years with the lapd. scott has tried

to return to southern california before. in 2017, he was a finalist for the los angeles police chief position, but lost to moore. >> the department in southern california is relying on drone technology to combat crime. murrieta police say they've deployed drones at least 50 times, and they've been successful at catching or tracking suspects. officers say the devices are especially effective in the dark. that's because they can pick up heat signatures from people and vehicles, which can help the drone operator easily identify a potential target. but the department has five officers who are pilots assigned to their individual drones 24 over seven. >> does this program help with recruitment? >> i believe it does. a lot of our newer officers come equipped with with an awareness of technology, and some of them even own drones themselves. >> this is especially helpful because this department doesn't have its own helicopteras
