approach the span, which is good, a good idea given that limited visibility we have our early morning commuters up and adam over the altamont pass and a sig alert on the bay bridge. we will talk about in just a few minutes. kumasi reggie. >> thank you. sue. the faa is widening its investigation into planemaker boeing after that terrifying incident when a door panel flew off during an alaska airlines flight, the federal agency says it's completed inspections of 40 of the 171 boeing 737 max nine jets in use. in a new video posted to youtube , alaska airlines ceo is now apology arising as the airline continues to cancel between 110 to 150 flights every day. >> with respect to the cancellations, i've asked our team to give guests as much advanced notice as possible and our reservations team is working around the clock to re-accommodate people on other flights. to all who have been impacted by the disruptions, i am sorry. >> alaska airlines says it started an audit of boeing's

quality control systems and this week increased its oversight of new planes at its ordering. ordered already, i should say, from boeing. we talked to an expert on air safety about how the public could interpret this. >> this is a partnership. and let's not forget that that everybody has a stake in safety. and as a result of that, things will get improved and better and air travel will be safer because of it. >> passengers have already filed two separate lawsuits over this incident. another twist in sunday's deadly plane crash off of the half moon bay coast. investigators with the ntsb says its preliminary information says that there were four people on board. now, initially, the faa reported there were only two people on the plane. a woman's body was recovered on monday near the crash site. she has been identified as 27 year old emma pearl wilmer chiles, no other bodies have been found. a

big win against organized retail theft. >> three suspects are being charged in connection to a rash of burglaries across the bay area. attorney general rob bonta says the trio hit 25 stores from september to november of last year, and that led to over $650,000 in losses. those suspects generally donned dark clothes, masks and gloves to break through security doors and security gates. >> twice, they stole 80 machines, one from an open chevron gas station and one from a closed smoke shop. >> the three are accused of driving into a walnut creek. louis vuitton and taking $250,000 worth of items. they face nearly 60 felony and misdemeanor counts, including organized retail theft, second degree burglary and grand theft. >> bay area police departments have really been struggling to bring on new officers, but one local department has found a way to fill its ranks. abc seven

news reporter anser hassan shows us what's luring in new recruits . >> i have good news, uh. ever since we rolled out the hiring incentive, we went from about a 30% deficit to about a 10% deficit in the last ten months. that incentive that alameda police chief nishant joshi is talking about is a $75,000 signing bonus. >> the highest for law enforcement currently being offered in the country. and he says it's working and helping them to attract top talent men, women, um, different backgrounds. >> uh, several different languages. i think we combined have canada who speak ten different languages. alameda has a budget for a total of 88 officers. >> last year there were 24 vacancies. since offering the signing bonus, they've received 400 applications, 20 positions have been filled at a starting pay of $113,000. >> that's 75,000 could essentially cover someone's living expenses for two years. and so that's how we came up

with that. do you remember what the starting salary was back when you started? >> i think it was $37,500. and back then it felt like a lot of money. >> so san francisco police chief william scott says sfpd salaries are almost quadrupled for new recruits from when he started as sfpd. he claims to have among the highest starting pay for new cops in the u.s. and they've streamlined the applicati . >> yes, because it's so competitive. a lot of people who are interested in this type of work, they're not going to wait. you know, they're going to go to another department. if we don't open our academies up and open our doors. so that model, we believe has helped change the game as well. >> over at bart, interim deputy chief christopher vogan says they have 31 vacancies out of 242 positions. bart increased the base pay by 20% and for the past year have been offering a $15,000 signing bonus for those with previous experience. part of the uh- hiring bonus is the fact that we're not having to pay to put somebody through a

police academy. as with other agencies, vogan says the bonus is working in alameda, anser hassan, an abc seven news. this morning. >> the warriors are dealing with a huge loss the sudden death of their beloved assistant coach. the team says dan milojevic, suffered a heart attack during a team dinner last night's game was postponed because of his death. abc seven news reporter leanna howland is here now with more on the story. lena, he was so young. >> reggie that's right, dub nation and the entire basketball community is mourning the loss of coach dickey, as he was called after he suffered a heart attack the night before. the warriors would have played the utah jazz. the warriors had a private dinner on tuesday night in salt lake city, which is pretty normal. they were at an italian restaurant when coach dickey suffered the heart attack. cpr was given immediately and he was taken to a hospital, but he passed away yesterday morning at 46 years old. milojevic was in his third year as an assistant coach to the warriors, even helping them win the nba championship back in

2022. and before last night's lakers and mavericks game here on abc seven, the recently turned former gm of the warriors, bob myers, was fighting back tears talking about coach dickey. >> it hurts. he's um, it's just hard because, um, when you when you work with these people, um, especially for coaches. malika it you people say it, but you see them more than your family. you do you develop a closeness. um and it's just hard because he was this bigger than life person, and he he would light up a room, and i just. it's such a loss because he's gone. >> but for coming to the golden state, coach dickey was already a legend in his home country of serbia. he played internationally for 14 years and was a three time mvp, measuring six foot six. and then he turned to coaching around the world.

the repairs came a day after abc seven news did a report on the air. we first brought you the story tuesday. crews were out yesterday to patch up the four inch water pipe at indiana and marin streets. as we found out the delay in service was due to a shortage of public works staff and a large number of reported leaks. the city says some of the work orders are more urgent, since they involve 36 inch pipes. >> those are prioritized over smaller ones like this that, yes, they are a nuisance leak, but they are not creating any damage to any any residents. no residents are out of water. >> our newsroom got another call from a viewer about a different leak at a different location. the water department says they'll get to that one today. >> the effort to clean up a fuel spill in san rafael is expected to last until tomorrow. 1300 gallons of gas spilled when a tanker overturned early wednesday morning. police say the eastbound left lane of frieda's parkway, near northgate drive, is going to be shut down starting at ten this morning until two in the afternoon, and

then it will shut down again the same time tomorrow, though, so that crews can continue to mop up the spill. now, this morning, crews in san mateo county will be proactively cutting down eucalyptus trees lining highway 92. caltrans crews are working to cut down 12 trees, causing slowdowns and lane closures near the crystal springs reservoir. now, the work on this started yesterday. you eucalyptus trees are not native to california and they create maintenance challenges. caltrans says that some trees pose a significant risk to the roads. >> the tree is very heavy. top heavy, and their root system is shallow. so it doesn't come to a surprise. uh- to many arborists, when you hear of a eucalyptus failure, drivers are asked to plan for delays with lane closures in effect starting at 630 this morning, lasting until three in the afternoon. >> the works come, work comes only days after a scary incident in san francisco's golden gate park. you can see this large eucalyptus tree uprooted, toppled on the traffic and

was a three time mvp, measuring six foot six. and then he turned to coaching around the world. his impact around the league went beyond the warriors. here's the head coach of the toronto raptors, another serbian emotional talking about coach deki after their game last night . >> all my guys loved him. and opening play in a game was ato that that deki my friend. i learned that play from him and that's what he brought to nba. that's what he brought to golden state. i stole that play from him and that was our opening play tonight, and we were able to score on that one. so you know, i dedicated this this team win to our team and to deck nba commissioner adam silver also responded to the death of coach deki, writing the nba mourns the sudden passing of dejan milojevic, a beloved colleague and dear friend to so many in the global basketball community.

abc news, new york 548. >> we're looking at the accuweather headlines this morning. we are dealing with dense fog out there, dense fog advisory in effect until 11 a.m. once we get rid of the fog, we have a lot of cloud cover. so today is an overnight last day limited sunshine. and that's ahead of our next storm here tomorrow afternoon and evening. it's a level one. on the storm impact scale for downpours and gusty winds over the weekend. we've upped it to a level two, a moderate system on saturday and sunday because we will find heavy rain at times today. enjoy the dry weather. it is a little humid out there this morning. you may find some pockets of drizzle along the coast, but for the most part we're just dealing with a lot of cloud cover and temperatures in the upper 50s to the mid 60s. we'll get you into friday. those clouds are in place in the morning, maybe some pockets of drizzle. first thing, but the main event holds off until the afternoon. here's 230 when the front is moving onshore, and then we'll be in and out of those showers through friday evening and friday night. and as those showers move through, the winds will pick up

as well. here's future tracker windspeed showing you out of the south friday evening. there likely gusting anywhere from 20 to 35mph. we could even see higher gusts along the coastline. looking at friday's rainfall will likely see some higher totals in the santa cruz mountains, where we could see areas over an inch. but for the most part, around the bay shoreline, a 2:45 quarters of an inch of rain where we find those downpours slowly moving through, we could inch closer to about an inch of moisture. the biggest impact is going to be some slick travel friday night, but this sets the stage for a really active pattern over the weekend and into early next week. we are tracking several storms out there, so as we take a look at our rainfall estimates, this is friday through tuesday, a five day window, our highest peaks could pick up anywhere from 5 to 7in of rain. the north bay will likely see 3 to 5in of rain, and then the rest of the bay area, a healthy inch and a half to three inches of rain. we're going to watch our smaller streams and creeks potential for minor flooding is there, and also some nuisance flooding on our
