interviews with witnesses, photographs, videos and tips that law enforcement failed to track down. laci peterson, then seven and a half months pregnant disappeared december 24th, 2002. the innocence project filings focus on a burglary at the home directly across the street from the peterson's house that same week. they want video of interviews conducted by modesto police with two men involved in the burglary. one of them reportedly said laci witnessed him breaking into the house. they want to find out if a van that was found torched near the modesto airport is connected to the burglary in side, investigators discovered a mattress with stains confirmed to be blood. the innocence project wants to conduct new dna tests on those samples. could it be laci peterson's blood? the filing also mentions a witness who says he saw a pregnant woman fitting lacey's description, who appear to be under duress. getting into a van on scenic road. >> i think there's enough evidence that it's probable that that someone else may have

committed the crime. enough evidence for law enforcement, law enforcement to, uh, investigate further. >> they also want more information on to help track the trail of a croton watch that may have been laci peterson's palm the week after she disappeared. and the filings claim modesto police did not fully follow up on reports that laci was spotted walking her golden retriever after the time. scott peterson says he went fishing at 930 that morning. lead innocence project attorney paula mitchell writes that she has encountered witnesses who feared coming forward because the case is too high profile. scott peterson has claimed innocence from the day laci disappeared, and he repeated that in the filings, writing i had absolutely nothing to do with the disappeared and deaths of my wife and son. i am not a violent person. i have never had a physical fight or violent incident with anyone in my life. then i'm a wow! >> so fascinating. >> a lot more to come. >> okay. yeah. thank you dan.

golden gate park has a new name. it is now blue heron lake, san francisco's rescue, recreation and park commissioners approved the name change today. the lake had been named after former state assembly member william stow, who spoke in favor of discriminatory laws against jewish people. this new name, blue heron lake, was the public's top pick. volunteers say it's a heartbreaking loss after thieves got away with a cash crop of bonsai trees. someone stole eight trees from the bonsai garden at oakland's lake merritt. here are photos of some of those stolen trees. all could sell for up to $20,000. most of the trees are donated and each has a history. it's not just a simple theft. >> it's a it's an emotional one. it involves the work of many, many dedicated people. and i mean that in the truest sense of dedication to an art form. we have a pine tree that was grown from a seed planted by a family after they were released from the internment camps. each and every tree has a story. >> the oldest tree in the garden

minutes before the group removed it. there were no arrests. >> a new poll shows the race for the senate seat once held by dianne feinstein, tightening republican candidate. former baseball star steve garvey, is now in second place. garvey visited the bay area today, and abc seven news reporter zach fuentes was there and now joins us live from our south bay bureau with a closer look at the poll and what these numbers mean. zach yeah. >> it's important to remember that in this primary race, the two candidates with the most votes go on to the november election regardless of their party and californians haven't elected a republican to the us senate since 1988. but the new poll does show garvey possibly making it into november's top two in the race to claim the us california senate seat is heating up. a poll released thursday by emerson college shows where the four frontrillionunners stand. 25% of respondents said they'd vote for adam schiff, putting him in the lead in second place is republican candidate steve garvey, with 18% democratic candidates katie porter and barbara lee came in third and
6:09 pm
fourth place with 13 and 8. garvey met with members of the bay area jewish community thursday at the chabad of the tri-valley to talk about the impacts of the israel-hamas war. he reacted to that poll following the roundtable discussion. >> well, we had a good poll come out today. yeah, not bad for a guy three and a half months into this, into this journey. >> abc seven news insider phil matier says voter uneasiness could be a factor in why garvey is polling so high. it could also be the topics garvey has brought up at his campaign stops . >> there's a lot of things that democrats were not hearing a lot about. things like gaza. we're not hearing a lot about the border and other sort of hot button issues between those three democrats. you throw a republican into the debate that could change those topics top of mind at garvey stop in pleasanton thursday. >> we basically have one voice in california. >> it's time that there's another voice. >> leaders at the chabad of the tri-valley are fast to point out that they're not endorsing anyone, but, say, a willingness from candidates of either side
6:10 pm
to listen goes a long way. so this is actually the first candidate who's reached out to us. >> uh- if any other candidate would like to reach out to us, we are here and we welcome their commitment. >> despite the high polling numbers, garvey's worked to make the final two in the general election is far from over. >> when people look at garvey's numbers and say, this is a surge, well, you have to also remember that about 27% of the voters in california are registered republicans. so he should be getting up to 25. so he needs to do some work. if he gets up to 20 to 25, there's a good chance that he is going to be in the runoff. >> while garvey is running as a republican, he did not answer yes or no. today when asked if he would welcome an endorsement from former president trump, the race for all candidates continues as the march 5th primaries draw near in san jose. zach fuentes abc seven news all right, zach, thank you so much. >> all right. you'll hear more from abc seven news insider phil matier. he joins us live next to

6:14 pm
time again is san francisco. this compassionate city makes it too easy for people to be out there on the streets using drugs and we make it too hard for people to get into treatment that the mayor says prop f will change that. >> the no. on opposition f campaign, however, says the measure will only make the problem worse, claiming evidence shows that forcing people into treatment doesn't work. well, joining us now to discuss this topic is abc seven news insider phil matier. >> yeah. so, phil, give us your thoughts. should voters pass prop f? >> well, my thoughts don't matter. it's the thoughts of the voters. and polling shows that about two out of three voters in san francisco are ready to say yes. on first blush, they say that the problem on the streets is so severe that they're just about ready to try anything. and if somebody is saying that in order to get $700 a month, you need to accept treatment. if you
6:15 pm
have a drug problem. that sounds logical to a lot of people who don't quite understand why we would be giving $700 a month to someone who had a drug problem and wasn't doing anything about it. >> well, we can debate what might work, but we know what we're doing isn't working for sure, right? >> that's right. and so what we have here is a combination. we have a policy that the mayor wants to enforce, which is basically saying, yes, we will help, but we want you to help, too. it's got to be a two way street. she's been saying that consistently. other people say no. it's up to individuals to decide when they want to go to treatment. and if you force them into treatment, it could just lead to more complications. the second part of it is she is sending a message out from san francisco saying that the idea of just coming here and doing drugs and getting on general assistance, those days are over. so she wants to send that message out because she's trying to stem the problem from increasing the third message. she wants to get out is that she's doing something about this because she's running for reelection. and what you're seeing on the screen right there, san francisco voters are tired of seeing it. and so she
6:16 pm
has to stake out her turf on this before the other candidates have. and she's beat him to the punch on this. >> she's under a lot of pressure, obviously. >> yeah. and we saw you talking about steve garvey earlier as deep blue california. really going to elect a republican. hey we elected arnold schwarzenegger governor. >> okay. but are we chances are not the but the question isn't whether or not steve garvey, the republican, is going to win come november. the question among democrats is, will he have enough votes because there are 25 or so percent of californians registered as republicans. right. and that might be enough to get him in the runoff. so it's a question isn't so much like, okay, are we going to elect a republican or are we just going to have one winner on the democratic side versus two going into november? >> it's going to make it very interesting. it is. >> keep your eyes open. a lot of tv ads, okay? >> okay. >> thanks, phil very much. >> and phil talked about the future of san francisco with the mayor, police chief and district attorney for the live event abc7 hosted take action san francisco. the entire commercial free hour is streaming on

yeah, the abc seven news i-team is digging into the risk and the efforts made to protect it. >> here's i-team reporter stephanie sierra with the story. you'll see only on seven. >> built in 1937, in the midst of the great depression, the golden gate bridge is not only iconic, but a symbol of american ingenuity and resolve. the two towers stand nearly 750ft above water, strung with 80,000 miles of cable, a bay area beauty and necessity, carrying 37 million vehicles each year. more than 100,000 per day, including half a million freight trucks serving as a key link for supply chains. >> there is only one golden gate bridge and we are going to protect u.s. transportation secretary pete buttigieg told us this last january. >> the question is how we always say dirt to fly. speaker emerita nancy pelosi fought for years to strengthen the golden gate bridge. most recently, she and her congressional colleagues were critical in securing $400
6:31 pm
million to protect the bridge from seismic threats due in part to the historic bipartisan infrastructure law passed in 2021. >> and that was a real battle, and we were successful in getting that done, pelosi says. >> roughly 43,000 bridges across the u.s. are currently rated in poor condition, and this law will benefit 15,000 of them. yet she was able to secure the most for the golden gate. can you walk me through that long terme investment and how it will play out? >> they will retrofit some pieces is they will restore some and they will have new things that they bring in like this dozens of devices that will protect the structure of the bridge in the event of a big quake. >> they're called energy dissipation devices. what we found is that these devices work amazingly well. dennis mulligan is the general manager of the golden gate highway and transportation district. >> now, we don't yet have an estimate of the. >> while parts of the bay bridge
6:32 pm
collapsed during the 1989 loma prieta earthquake, the golden gate withstood it. mulligan expects the next one will likely be worse, but it's important to realize that that earthquake was 60 miles away. >> it was a santa cruz earthquake, and while the magnitude number sounds big, it's actually a moderate earthquake. an 8.3 magnitude earthquake would be, you know, more than 100 times more energy. >> since then, the district has been preparing. >> it was a good wake up call, and we evaluate our structure. >> the first three phases of the golden gate bridge seismic retrofit were completed in 2014. this included retrofitting the north and south ends of the bridge where the cables are secured to bedrock areas found to be the most vulnerable. it also involved wind tunnel testing and replacing the steel support. it's to put a new foundation that's ten times stronger and we put seismic isolation bearings on top. >> so when the ground starts to shake that tower doesn't have to drag the whole weight of the bridge with it. it decouples it. so there's less force on the tower, but there's still a lot
6:33 pm
of work to be done, including retrofitting the suspension bridge, which is set to begin this year. >> this is where hundreds of floor beams will be replaced with new bracing, a process that won't be complete until 2029. so what happens if we have a big earthquake before then? >> the bridge is safe. it will not collapse. no one will die in the bridge. however there will be damage. there will be significant damage that will necessitate potentially having to replace the bridge. >> the cost of replacing something like the golden gate bridge would range from. >> to replace a bridge of this scale with. this span length is probably north of $10 billion, so a reality check. >> what are the chances of the next big quake overall, the region faces this 72% chance of a really large earthquake, a magnitude 6.7 plus in the next three decades. usgs earthquake scientist austin elliott says most of that threat comes from the hayward fault, which has a 1 in 3 chance of producing an earthquake within that window.
6:34 pm
but to put that in perspective, usgs says the margin of error is decades, meaning it could happen tomorrow or it could happen 20 years from now. elliott explains. while it's difficult to predict precise numbers, the latest estimate from the national scale forecast suggests the hayward fault could see at least a magnitude 7.1 to 7.3, up to a 7.5, while the san andreas fault could produce up to a magnitude eight as far as another magnitude eight from the san andreas fault. >> that's probably farther off in our future, but it is inevitable. but recent research people have done some more specific modeling of the hayward in particular, that suggests that the magnitude could be larger, especially if it links with other faults. >> usgs recently identified a structural connection between the hayward fault south of san pablo bay and the rodgers creek fault north of san pablo bay. essentially one big continuous structure that may host a single large earthquake that doesn't necessarily mean that the ground shaking at any individual spot
6:35 pm
would be stronger, but the earthquake would last longer, and the area that's affected would be much larger. but as elliott pointed out, magnitude alone doesn't tell the whole story. modeling by usgs shows part of the threat is tied to where on the fault the quake begins. >> it depends on really where an earthquake starts and the nature of the fault slip itself that controls how ground motion and the intensity of shaking will be distributed around the region, bringing with it shockwaves threatening infrastructure across the bay area, including the golden gate. >> you know, if you're on the roadway, it's secure. the parts of the bridge that will twist and have damage are below the roadway. >> the next phase of this retrofit is expected to begin later this year. as far as impacts to commuters, we're told two lanes will be closed during the overnight hours in san francisco. stephanie sierra, abc seven news. >> new details on what authorities say coming up here at what's going to be a big year
