left behind, the rare treasures have hundreds of years of rich history, but now may be just a quick cash crop. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. >> we will get to that bizarre burglary in just a moment. but first, we do need to turn our attention to the weather system headed our way. oh, yeah. >> we are staring down a string of storms over the coming days. live doppler seven looks fairly clear tonight, but get ready. >> yes. let's get over to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. she is staying on top of what's coming. sandhya. yeah, it's going to be a series of storms, dan. and they're all lined up in the pacific and they'll be marching in here as early as tomorrow. so you can see here on live doppler seven, we are tracking multiple storms through the middle of next week. we're expecting that series to come through downpours at times gusty winds, possibility of downed trees and outages, minor flooding, certainly on the roadways, streams and creeks. possible shallow landslides as the ground becomes saturated. here is what we're expecting in the coastal hills 5 to 8in tomorrow through tuesday. the

north bay 3 to 5in, and the rest of the bay area anywhere between an inch and a half and three inches on live doppler seven. right now, a lot of cloud cover, a couple of sprinkles up to our north, but no real rain has arrived yet. that level one system gets in here tomorrow and i want to show you hour by hour what's going to happen. first thing in the morning. you will notice a couple of sprinkles, perhaps, but the main rain event is for the afternoon soon. going into the evening and this pretty much breaks down the rain chances. if you do want to run some errands, tomorrow morning is your best bet. afternoon evening you will see some heavy rain at times. it's a level one. we are expecting brief downpours . gusts up to 45 miles an hour. slick roads and poor visibility will be. i'll be back to time out the next storm, which is stronger for your upcoming weekend. plus the 49 ers forecast coming right up dan. >> all right thank you sandhya. >> all right now to new details. we're uncovering in a bizarre burglary of several valuable bonsai trees. yeah the bonsai garden at lake merritt in oakland is one of the city's

tranquil crown jewels for anyone who knows the area. >> but the staff are now scratching their heads after thieves got through two fences last night. it's unbelievable. >> this. that is the ultimate question tonight. who would be after bonsai trees like this? and once they've been stolen, what would someone want to do with them? abc seven news reporter j.r. stone went to find out. do you recognize this stolen bonsai tree or this one? >> or maybe this one? volunteers who run the bonsai garden at lake merritt need your help. >> somebody broke through the fence and stole eight trees and these trees are smaller trees that are. they're able to carry out through the fence. >> you can see the empty platforms where those bonsai trees once stood. eight trees may sound like a small number, but these are bonsai trees that may be older than you and i. >> there was a very rare hinoki cypress tree that had a very, very large trunk. the tree was only about 18in tall, but had a girth, had a girth on it of about eight inches. in fact,

it's estimated that that hinoki cypress tree is 100 years old now. >> it's been stolen and its whereabouts are unknown. sadly, this is the fourth time the bonsai garden at lake merritt has been hit in four years. but by far the worst volunteer years tell us that thieves went through this fence and somehow got through a separate fence surrounding the gardens of lake merritt. jonas dupuis is a bonsai expert in the bay area and creator of bonsai. tonight, he says the theft of bonsai trees is becoming a real problem around the world. recently, nurseries in southern california, seattle and even japan have all been hit. >> right now, there's definitely more theft around the world, yet it seems to be far more sophisticated people casing the joint ahead of time, cutting cameras when they get there, and then the trees just vanish very quickly. >> it's unclear how sophisticated this theft was, seeing that these thieves were unable to get this redwood out and left it by the fence, there's a belief that these

trees are either being sold cheap online to nearby nurseries, or for big bucks elsewhere. this flowering apricot was stolen and you can still see some of the petals that fell as it was taken. >> it's so sad that people can't respect something that everybody comes and enjoys and can j can t

come byrvention efforts that address crime at its root causes and new developments. >> with the homemade bomb found near a city council member's home in san jose, police shared a picture of what looks like a pipe bomb lying on the ground. this was found back in the back in june of 2022. now tonight, a suspect is finally under arrest. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez has what we know tonight about that

suspect and reaction from the council member. >> san jose police arrested a man for allegedly placing a homemade explosive near a council woman's home following a months long investigation, officers say they obtained a warrant and took andreas navarro into custody on tuesday, court documents show navarro is facing a felony count for possessing a destructive device on thursday. the 33 year old was arraigned in court. >> we argued for no bail at this time due to him being a public safety risk. >> detectives say the investigation started back in june of 2022, when officers found this in a residential neighborhood. bomb technicians determined it was a functional, homemade destructive device. neighbors in the area pointed us to one of the residents living doors away. san jose city council member deborah or debra davis, in a statement to abc seven, davis said, my family and i are grateful for the work of

the san jose police department. we are relieved the suspect is in custody. we spoke to residents in this neighborhood who remembered the incident. they didn't want to go on camera , but they said they are also relieved the suspect has been caught. >> there was an investigative lead that we received earlier this month, and once that happened, sj, pd got on it. they rushed. they did an excellent job and we are glad that that that they did. >> police say during the search warrant at navarro san jose home , a field guide for improvised explosives was found. navarro lives within the same district as council member davis, but prosecutors say who his targets were is still under investigation. his next court date is set for february 9th in san jose. lauren martinez abc seven news there is stunning security footage from washington , dc tonight showing the moment a convenience store was rocked by a sudden explosion. >> emergency crews say the

explosion was caused by a gas leak. look at this. after a car hit a nearby gas meter. now, firefighters knew there was a leak and were able to evacuate the adjoining buildings before the blast happened. that included a daycare with 16 children inside. just in time, the daycare staff was clothing the children, putting their coats on, getting them into their strollers so that they can be brought out of the building. >> uh, when i made initial contact with the staff, one in person was injured by some flying debris, but is expected to recover. >> new developments in the ongoing lawsuit against the city of san francisco over the clearing of homeless camps. >> our media partner, the san francisco standard, is reporting the city is petitioning the courts to pause proceedings in the lawsuit. it's because the u.s. supreme court is set to review a similar case later this year, called johnson versus grants pass. it affirms the right of unhoused people to camp outside when no other shelter is available. our abc7 news insider phil matier, was on earlier today to break down what this all means. >> this is working its way

through the courts and what it is, is a lot of officials all the way from the governor on saying, can we take this to the supreme court and just work this out? it's a west coast phenomenon. we're not seeing these kind of laws in the on the eastern seaboard. we have a terrible crisis here. we are getting nowhere fast. so some kind of definition would really be helpful. >> an estimated 4000 people sleep on san francisco streets every night. >> well, building a better bay area is something we work on every day, and finding those breakthroughs is what we try to do here at abc seven news at 11. so tonight we want to highlight one small business that seems to be a success story in its neighborhood. it's a k-pop store called sarong. hello in san francisco's inner sunset, the shop serves up all things korean music and pop culture. and as abc seven news reporter tim johns found out, it's helping spark the local economy. night to go kick that from my ego in this show, from the music to the singing to the dancing step

inside san francisco sarong. >> hello. and it's like being transported all the way to south korea. the store, located in the sunset district, is the first and only k-pop store in the city. >> the great thing about k-pop is not just this music, but also like the idols themselves. like just how people are able to connect with the idols. >> kevin tang co-owns sarang cholo along with his two best friends. he tells me much of their merchandise is imported directly from korea and can't be found in other k-pop stores around the country. >> so if you're a huge collector of like, k-pop photo cards, um, we're definitely the store to go to. >> everything from the latest albums to photo cards of the hottest k-pop stars. they even have this photo booth, so you have an opportunity to take a photo with your favorite k-pop idol, or even kevin. since launching four years ago, sarang holo has grown from being just online to now in its second brick and mortar location. it's been so successful that it's even gotten the attention of san francisco mayor london breed, who tweeted. the store has

played a major role in revitalizing the nearby neighborhood after covid by driving increased sales tax revenue. tang says it's the personal touch that makes all the difference. we're huge fans, we're genuine fans, and i think that genuinity and love for like and passion for like k culture in particular, really resonates with a lot of people. for many, this is more than just a store, though. that includes for otto, who's been a customer for over two years. >> i made a lot of friends here at first, like i met a lot of staff and they become my friends and i feel comfortable to come here. and then it feels like a safe space for me. >> with business booming, tang says sarang has no plans to slow down in the future. he and his friends say they hope to open even more stores. our main focus this year is to build a much bigger community, make k-pop a lot more accessible here in the bay area and just continue to service the club in san francisco. ceo tim johns, abc

scott peterson. laci peterson was reported missing just before christmas 2002. she was eight months pregnant. a few months later, lacey's body and that of her unborn son were found in san francisco bay. abc7 news i-team reporter dan noyes spent the day reviewing the old case files and calling those involved in this 21 year old case. >> in this filing, scott peterson says he contacted the los angeles innocence project in july of last year. they took his case and yesterday filed a massive motion with exhibits. the innocence project's filings on behalf of scott peterson told a 1524 pages, including a motion for post-conviction discovery with the claim of actual innocence that is supported by newly discovered evidence. i asked scott peterson's sister in

law, janey peterson, whether she sees this as a real shot at a new trial. absolutely, she texted, or solving the crime and scott being released, the peterson family credits mike gudgell, a journalist who used to work for abc news with tracking down new evidence. >> the verdict was unsatisfactory. it was really conflicted about the case because there were any explanation of really what happened to laci was really a mystery. >> the innocence project motion asks for evidence not previously provided to the defense. police interviews with witnesses. photographs videos and tips that law enforcement failed to track down. laci peterson, then seven and a half months pregnant, disappeared december 24th, 2002. the innocence project filings focus on a burglary at the home directly across the street from the peterson's house. that same week. they want video of interviews conducted by modesto police with two men involved in the burglary. one of them reportedly said laci witnessed him breaking into the house.

they want to find out if a van that was found torched near the modesto airport is connected to the burglary inside. investigators discovered a mattress with stains confirmed to be blood. the innocence project wants to conduct new dna tests on those samples. could it be laci peterson's blood? the filing also mentions a witness who says he saw a pregnant woman fitting lacey's description, who appeared to be under duress getting into a van on scenic road. i think there's enough evidence that it's probable that that someone else may have committed the crime. >> enough evidence for law enforcement, law enforcement to, uh, investigate further. >> they also want more information to help track the trail of a croton watch that may have been laci peterson's palm the week after she disappeared. the filings claim modesto police did not fully follow up on reports that laci was spotted walking her golden retriever after the time, scott peterson says he went fishing at 930 that morning. lead innocence project attorney paula mitchell writes

about every type of vehicle, which seems true. yeah yeah. >> all right. well, not nearly that cold here, but we're about to get really wet. >> yeah. hammered with rain for days in a row. meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking that for us. sandra? >> yes? six out of seven days. but dan and i want to quickly show you just the national picture. millions of people are dealing with either ice chill or snow. look at the warnings across the entire country. we'll have our share of stormy weather . the first system is already sending us some moisture in the form of a few sprinkles. when these storms arrive every single day for the next six days, we are expect rain. these are our rain chances and we will of course have to deal with the problems this weekend. a stronger storm coming in, flooding is a high likelihood on the roadways, on your smaller streams and creeks, downed trees also high probability power outages in that medium category and shallow landslides are going to be in that high category. so be aware there is a little bit
