parade of storms set to start later today. not a parade. >> we're getting creative with a parade. the way we're describing rain, market street. oh my goodness, good morning. it's friday, january 19th. >> happy friday. we got to get some more clarity on this from drew. yeah. >> listen these storms are lined up. they're back to back to back to back. so we're entering a wet pattern that begins later today and will last through the middle part of next week. if you can believe that live doppler seven this morning we are quiet. we are dry. it's this afternoon and the evening hours that will find those showers and downpours. here's our next storm system coming in two waves. first, a warm front this afternoon will spread some light showers and then the cold front this evening will bring about some downpours. it's a level one today for those downpours, some gusty winds, even the chance of a thunderstorm later on this evening. here's future weather. watch the warm front move through here this afternoon. here's about 1230. some light showers, but the cold front is when things really get going. this is future weather at 5 p.m. showing you those downpours and

the brighter colors. and we do continue those downpours through friday night. and this is just one of several storms we'll talk about the weekend coming up in nine minutes. let's say hi to sue and see how traffic's doing. >> a dry morning commute. however, it will be wet for your afternoon drive. let's take a look at the golden gate bridge. very light traffic conditions heading southbound and from marin county. in fact, if your drive takes you from san rafael all the way through central marin, across the golden gate, it's about a 20 minute drive from novato to the bay bridge toll plaza. yes the metering lights are on. you can't really tell here because the traffic is friday light heading across the span. no delays, unlike yesterday. we see slow traffic and a fog advisory for the altamont pass. so there you have it. speeds under 20 miles an hour. then they ramp up to under 30 miles an hour. once you get into livermore, it's dense fog, but speeds at the limit. >> thank you. sue, a bombshell development in a decades old case. it sparked headlines around the world. los angeles, the los angeles innocence

project is looking to clear scott peterson in the killing of his pregnant wife, laci. >> laci and her unborn son disappeared just before christmas of 2002. their bodies were found in san francisco bay a few months later. scott peterson is currently serving life in prison. in new court filings, the innocence project says peterson's innocence is supported by newly discovered evidence. abc7 news i-team reporter dan noyes obtained the legal documents from san mateo county court yesterday. the 1500 pages of motions and exhibits call for a new review of all the evidence and tips that came in, and a new trial for the innocence project is a nonprofit legal organization that has been able to exonerate eight people who have been wrongly convicted, and the los angeles innocence project has seen it has seen it as it is, seeing it as a case that is worth their time and their effort. >> and usually they only take cases where they think that someone is wrongfully convicted or they have a strong belief that someone's been wrongfully convicted. >> scott peterson has claimed

his innocence from the day laci disappeared, and after his conviction in 2004, in court filings, peterson quoted stated, quote, i had absolutely nothing to do with the disappearance and deaths of my wife and son. i am not a violent person. often. i have never had a physical fight or violent incident with anyone in my life. peterson was convicted and sentenced to death in 2004. following a years of motions. in august of 2020, the california supreme court upheld peterson's conviction, but they overturned his death sentence in december of 2021. a san francisco county superior court judge recently set him to life in prison for lacey's murder without the possibility of parole. to look back at how the case unfolded, check out a timeline that we have at abc seven news.com. >> the family of murdered college student kristin smart is filing a wrongful death and negligence lawsuit against cal poly san luis obispo. the lawsuit claims university failed to properly respond to reports

of smart's convicted killer classmate paul flores exhibited harassing, stalking and violent behavior on campus. smart vanished in may of 1996. flores was convicted of first degree murder in 2023, and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. >> volunteers who run a public garden in lake merritt are asking for help after someone stole $20,000 worth of their bonsai trees. the director of bonsai gardens says someone broke through their fence and stole eight rare trees. some of them nearly 100 years old, and this is the fourth time the garden has been burglarized within four years. >> it's so sad that people can'trillionisk respect something that everybody comes and enjoys, and can just come by to a very peaceful place. volunteer. say they reached out to oakland police, but they did not receive a response. >> abc seven also reached out to opd and we didn't get a response. bonsai tree theft is becoming more common around the world. it's believed they're either being sold to nearby nurseries or for large amounts

of money somewhere else. >> all right, get ready to take the butter out and melt it. commercial dungeness crab season finally open here in the bay area. it was delayed for two months to protect migrating whales. abc seven news reporter lena howland live in half moon bay, where crab fishermen are expected to arrive this morning with their fresh catch. lena >> kumasi. that's right. after facing delay after delay, the long awaited dungeness crab season is back and fishermen we spoke with say they took advantage of getting back to work the minute they could. >> that's it. that's the money right there. california gold. commercial crabbers have faced a delayed season for the past five years. >> it usually starts in mid-november, so this is the latest fish and wildlife has ever opened up. the season. matt juanes was the first to sell off the dock yesterday at san francisco's fisherman's wharf. he says they were lined up and ready to go by 8:00 wednesday

night, waiting for the clock to strike midnight and their hard work in the middle of the night paid off. coming back to a line of people ready to buy right off of his boat, it feels a huge relief off my back. >> like i was like, stressed to the point where you get sick, you know, going out and just all everything builds up and then all of a sudden, like coming back, it was like, oh, like something just fell off. so it was it was great. >> i usually steam it. do it fresh because if you're getting fresh, you want it, you know, straight up, kind of like your tequila. you got to have it straight. not on ice. >> locals were celebrating the return of dungeness crab season yesterday by legging in their wagons, coolers, buckets and bags to be filled up with the fresh catch. and one difference between this year and last year. fishermen tell me that they are coming in much bigger last year. they say they weighed in at about a pound and a half each, but this year they are being brought in at more than 2 pounds

oregon last hour, but there you go. seeing cars sliding down the road on ice. >> well, here's the thing, drew people, if you live in portland, they're not used to ice and snow. so they don't have any equipment to get rid of it. >> right. it's like when we get a dusting of snow in our hills. we just love to see it, but we don't know what to do with it. right? so here's a look at today. it's all liquid precipitation. we're finding that rain along the coast first right around lunchtime and then it picks up in intensity as we head throughout the afternoon and the evening. around the bay shoreline. we have a really quiet morning. and then in the afternoon we see that action pick up. we'll get into the low 60s as thatrillionain turns heavier later on this evening, and inland we'll find those showers mainly around five six, 7 p.m. and some heavier showers after the sun goes down. now tomorrow though, we still have rain in the forecast. that does include rain at levi's stadium, but i think we escape the heaviest of the rain. some light showers around. kickoff. kickoff temperature 58 degrees and even some light showers around the fourth quarter. reggie >> thanks, drew. super bowl star power. the performers just announced to take the stage

>> yeah a little sprinkle. >> yeah. you like milk basically. >> thank you. they're mostly. >> she likes mugs. >> she okay. >> nothing wrong with that. you know what? >> it's too soon. it's too soon. no respect drew. >> no, it's still it's still resting in peace. >> it's not even been a month. >> i'll be redeemed. >> you will just. you wait. resurrected >> let's go outside. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. we're tracking our first of several storms approaching california. you can see that low pressure wrapping up out in the ocean. that front about to move on shore this evening. let's time it all out for you. it is quiet this morning. a warm front will spread some light showers early this afternoon, but it's the cold front that really has the most energy and that moves onshore this evening. this is 5:00 pm and there you can see we will track some downpours. heavy rain at times. and that front is going to linger even through the late night hours. on friday we'll have some more showers building in here for saturday and we could even see some downpours saturday night into sunday. so looking at just rainfall estimates with this initial round of rain, you can see most areas about a half of an inch to an inch of rain. look

at the santa cruz mountains, potentially close to three inches of rain. some areas in the north bay could pick up more than an inch of rain out of this first system, so we're tracking several rounds of rain lasting into the middle part of next week. sure, we'll track that rain at times. we also have some dry periods too over the next six days. throughout this period, winds will be gusty at times. that could cause some trees to come down and also some isolated power outages. and then by monday morning, the ground is going to be saturated and heavy rain is moving in. so there could be some areas of minor flooding on our roads and our creeks, and also the possibility of some shallow landslides as well. watch that closely. early next week when it comes to snowfall. unfortunately these are warm storms. that means the snow levels are pretty high above 7000ft. we'll get one round of snow coming here late tonight into saturday, and then another round of snow coming into monday. you see the totals probably a foot of new snow on our highest peaks. and fortunately, it's a lot more rain than snow with these storm systems back here at home today with thatrillionain moving in

found this pipe bomb near the home of san jose city council member devora davis. now, in a statement to abc seven, davis said, quote, my family and i are grateful for the work of the san jose police department, where we believe the suspect is in custody, end quote. police say they found a guide for improvised explosives as they searched navarro's san jose home . >> there was an investigative lead that we received earlier this month, and once that happened, sj pd got on it >> prosecutors say it's not clear who navarro was targeting. his next court date is set for february 9th. for men charged in the murder of oakland police officer tuan lay have pleaded not guilty. >> officer lay was working undercover when he was shot while responding to a marijuana business burglary on december 29th. marquis cooper is the latest of the four men to be charged. he's accused of 16 felonies. mark sanders is

accused of firing the deadly shot. allen brown is accused of driving the getaway vehicle side . brown russell is charged with burglary. now he is out on bail. attorneys for cooper and russell both want a speedy trial. yesterday, they raised concerns in court over delays in receiving discovery from the prosecution. >> i'm sure the district attorney's working on it and diligently, but yes, i have not been provided any discovery. we have about 19 pages at this point. it's pretty important, especially since we're moving relatively quickly. >> so we want to get all that information as soon as possible. do our own investigation. >> prosecutors didn't return requests for comment. >> your voice, your vote. former president donald trump and former south carolina governor nikki haley held a duel, held dueling media appearances as the nation's first primary is just four days away. and a cnn town hall, haley slammed trump for refusing to debate her in new hampshire. she also criticized his record on issues including the national debt, the national deficit and fentanyl. trump took to fox news, saying haley has,

showers, first with a warm front and then heavier showers. work in here this evening with scattered downpours all evening and all night. we'll see a brief break, probably in some of this wet weather early tomorrow morning. but then again, here we go by saturday evening, our next wave of showers is going to move on shore. looking at the next 36 hours. when it comes to rainfall , a half of an inch to an inch for a lot of us, but some areas exceeding an inch and likely in the santa cruz mountains. we're going to get slammed with some heavy rain closing in on three inches of rain through tomorrow evening. but this is just one of several storms through wednesday, so looking atrillionainfall through midweek next week, our coastal hills likely 4 to 6in the north bay, about 2 to 4in, and then the rest of the bay area will likely see 1 to 2in of rain out of the storm system. so the takeaway with this progressive pattern, it's a parade of storms into next week. yes, we're tracking rain, but there's also some dry periods too. throughout this pattern, we have gusty winds at times that could bring down some trees and also create some power outages. and monday morning we're watching closely because
