curry, who was in san francisco. >> but first, let's hear from abc seven news. meteorologist sandhya patel. because sandhya, this is just the first in a series of storms. >> absolutely. diane and larry, we are looking at days of rain ahead as we take a look at live doppler seven. we will talk about where it is coming in right now. it is coming down pretty hard in parts of the east bay. moderate to heavy rain falling from berkeley, piedmont, heading across cross into the pacheco area. you will notice near martinez as well. we have been seeing the rain intensifying in the north bay from calistoga, heading towards saint helena and down towards the south bay. there is some rain falling right now around san jose willow glen it is lighter in nature as we look at san francisco around chinatown, mission district seeing some showers the wider picture showing you the low is off the coast. this is a level one storm. there has been thunder reported around modesto, so the rain will pick up as the night goes on and continue to intensify along with the potential for some thunderstorms
6:02 pm
as we head towards the wee hours of tomorrow morning, it turns more showery in nature. wind are gusting right now. 38 on diablo 45, mount eminem thunderstorm risk is going up, as you can see, and it's a level one on our storm impact scale through tonightrillionain. brief downpours, gusty winds, ponding on the roadways. there are many more days of rain to deal with. i'll be back with a look at that forecast coming up. >> all right sandhya, thank you. we'll see you in a few minutes. people in the north bay preparing for what this series of storms might bring. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard joining us live now in petaluma with more. looks like it's raining right now. >> yeah, larry, the rain has arrived and we are getting soaked here in downtown petaluma . lots of umbrellas around other people running for cover. the north bay getting ready for a series of storms which could bring flooding, landslides and power outages. getrillioneady the rain moved in friday afternoon, giving umbrellas a heavy duty winter workout. doug

simon is filling as many sandbags as he can at the santa rosa municipal services center. doug knows he's going to need help keeping the rain away. >> i am here to prevent uh- water flooding the front of my house, diverting some water to get some sandbags to divert because of the heavy rains coming. >> we found this santa rosa public works crew on the job, making sure city storm drains are clear and ready for a lot of water. >> so what are you guys doing? >> cleaning up. i'm sure this doesn't go down the storm drain in novato. >> a roofing crew was covering this roof with a giant blue tarp to keep the house dry. firstrillionesponders are preparing. for 3 to 5in of rain through tuesday, maybe more for the series of storms. is bringing the threat of flooding and possible landslides. last year, this landslide on cooper drive left several homes redtagged plastic sheeting is now in place to protect the hillside. >> so some of the stuff we like
6:04 pm
to remind residents to do is obviously with bigger lots and properties. if you're on hillsides to check those hillsides, look for any movement that may be happening, p-g-and-e's says it's preparing for the storm by up staffing utility crews and stocking up on transformers and power poles. >> if outages occur, the army corps of engineers has been releasing water from lake sonoma reservoir into the russian river, like they did last winter, to make room for more rainfall. >> but right now, in preparation for these events, they're going to be minimizing the releases out of those reservoirs to, like i said, to maximize the flood control protection to downstream communities. >> yeah. in fact, two of sonoma county's largest reservoirs are mostly full. that's why those water releases are so necessary. tsay p-g-and-e's are asking customers to be prepared for possible power outages. have your cell phone charged, keep flashlights and batteries handy just in case. and if you are driving, be very careful. it's wet out there. we're live in petaluma tonight. i'm cornell

barnard, abc seven news. >> all right, cornell, get dry, get inside watching you get soaked out there. all right. thank you, sir. >> flood barricades are already up around san francisco in preparation for the rain through the weekend. we'll continue our live team coverage now with abc seven news reporter ryan curry near the mission. from when? the last time we saw you also very wet out there, ryan. >> yeah. dion good evening. now it's not raining nearly as much as where cornell is experiencing up in the north bay. we're getting a little bit of off and on rain showers here in the city, but right now we're at 18th and folsom, where this street unfortunately has a history of flooding. so what is the city going to do about that to prevent it from happening again? well, you can see behind me they've got these barricades now up along the streets in front of these buildings to prevent any more water from getting inside these buildings. san francisco has learned a lot from last year. sandbag stations are stocked and ready to go in. folsom street is taking advantage at the edge of the
6:06 pm
road. big barriers public works hopes will stop rising water from getting into these buildings. this street got hit hard by last winter storms, but flooding isn't the only concern. rain soaked trees can be dangerous as these trees seem to take on a lot more water and once they get top heavy and that soil is loose, they're going to come down. >> frank vasquez and his team will be ready to go this weekend . >> it's hard to predict when a tree might come down, but when they do look out. just this week, a giant eucalyptus tree fell in golden gate park and it wasn't even raining. >> when you're under pressure, things start to happen. you can make wrong decisions. so just going over some of the safety issues and when to leave a situation, when it's safe to work in a situation others aren't letting the rain stop them at luxford and hayes valley, you can't get ripped without getting a little wet. >> there might be some waterfalls happening to our left and to our right, but for the most part, we can still stay absolutely dry and get our workouts in the outdoor gym has tents up all over their
6:07 pm
equipment, but co-owner brandon vu says they'll stay open, but they'll have to make some adjustments for group classes. and we have a lot of folks in the house which you know, beginning of the year it's been hot at the gym. and so, you know, maybe we're we're getting a little tighter, we're getting a little more close to their neighbors. but otherwise i mean, it's business as usual. >> they stayed open during the strong downpours last year and are ready to do it again. we can make it happen. >> just come, come bundled, come prepared. >> preparation is key for storms like the ones we're going to be seeing tonight. and throughout this weekend. i was talking to some of the business owners on the street about how they feel about these barricades. they're happy to see them. they just hope mother nature is kinder. this year than she was last year. we're live in san francisco. ryan curry, abc seven news. all right, many thanks to you standing out there during that moment of reprieve. >> ryan, thanks. now, don't forget, you can track the rain anytime with the very same live doppler seven that sandhya uses. just search abc seven bay area in your device's app store to download it. now for a third straight time, a judge is

delaying a ruling in a case involving both california's racial justice act and the antioch police texting scandal, as abc seven news reporter anser hassan explains, this could mean reduced charges for four defendants at the center of a murder trial. >> it's expected to be a landmark ruling with implications across california. >> this case will in large part determine whether or not law enforcement believes that the racial justice act has teeth or whether it doesn't, whether they're going to get away with business as usual, or whether they're going to have to really make changes. i think that's the impact that this case is going to have on policing in california. kamala carmona represents terri-ann pugh. >> he's currently on trial with three others facing a range of charges, including murder and attempted murder related to a gang shooting. he's also one of the individuals singled out in the antioch police texting scandal in april, carmona filed a motion under california's racial justice act, which allows a person charged or convicted of a crime to challenge racial bias
6:09 pm
in their case. carmona says the texting scandal exposed that bias, and the prosecution doesn't dispute it. >> there were three officers who testified died at multiple preliminary hearings in this case, and never let on to the facts that we've learned through their texting in their private phones as a ruling on possible remedies was expected on friday. >> but for a third time, the judge delayed his decision with no indication when he will rule possible outcomes includes reduced charges or dropping of special enhancements. carmona says the judge's delays suggests he's being meticulous about the ruling, knowing the ramifications means a lot of it is novel. >> there hasn't been a case of this nature with this magnitude of reach within the state. >> cheryl cobbs is the mother of trent allen, another defendant in the case. she's been to every hearing and hopes a ruling comes soon. >> it's just a long road, right now and just being patient right now, but it's hard in martinez, anser hassan, abc7 news. >> a controversial statue of
6:10 pm
gaspar de portola, which sat along highway one in pacifica, has been removed. the association of ramaytush ohlone says the statue was hauled away yesterday morning. members say portola was a spanish colonizer whose actions led to the destruction of native peoples in california. three years ago, they asked caltrans to remove the statue and now it is gone. >> well, less than 24 hours away now. and right now, 40 niners fans are getting pumped for tomorrow's divisional playoff game against the green bay packers at levi's stadium. kickoff at 515. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez is at the gathering in san jose, joining us live. i saw the fans waving their rally towels earlier. i mean, it sounds like a great atmosphere there this rally is underway now. >> just take a look behind me. we're inside block urban off of san pedro square, where this venue is three floors.
6:11 pm
>> so though the faithful have different options of where to go on the third floor, there's the legendary running back frank gore, signing autographs. >> there's a dj on the second floor. lots to do. every fan here received a free food and drink voucher with a 40 niners rally towel. so a lot of smiles. great energy. it's just been awesome to be here. fans started lining up for this rally at three this afternoon, noon uh. we spoke to two fans who were actually first in line. one of them was wearing a custom vest made by kyle hughes, shefs wife, kristen. she's the nfl wife making the merch for some big name celebrities. i'm sure you've heard of her. she's gone viral. um, take a listen to what they told us. >> i'm so excited. and i know that she's gone viral with some of her other creations, but she did this for the fans. she wanted to give back, and this was her way of doing. raffling off one of the vests that she
6:12 pm
made and i was just fortunate. how does that feel to be wearing one of her pieces? i feel like a celebrity. i feel like taylor swift because we're huge 40 niner fans and it's local event, and i've never gone downtown to one of these events and i'm like , i'm getting off work early now. >> this rally will be going on until eight tonight. >> if you're not able to make it here, there are so many other places in downtown san jose. lots of 40 niners fans just out enjoying the weekend. so come on down here and if you're going to the game tomorrow, i'll see you there. >> live in san jose lauren martinez, abc seven news lauren, i'm having major fomo. >> i know you can't hear a word. i'm saying because it's so loud in there with the music thumping and off she goes. anyway uh, yeah, they're having fun. they're having fun. >> all right. still to come tonight. learning job skills. not locked up. meet the former judge who created a new place for young people to get on a

6:16 pm
what's sure to be one of the most memorable days of 12 year old addison kypreos life. >> how much fun have you had today? >> lots of fun. i love, i've loved this day. this is probably one of the best days ever, though. >> addison and her family now live in wisconsin, their roots are in northern california. addison is not just a sharks fan, but possibly one of their biggest. she got the surreal opportunity to join them on the ice at their practice rink. i raced some of the guys and i obviously beat them, um, despite addison's energy and enthusiasm, she's been dealing with a devastating disorder. >> addison suffers from a rare skin disorder called epp. basically, like a few minutes outside on the wrong day can equal pain. that's equal to a second degree, like burn. >> addison's disorder also led to stage five liver failure. the nonprofit shadow jumpers helps families who are faced with rare sun disorders. they connected with the kypreos family as addison was going through liver treatments. >> and what we found was she uh- her bedroom when she was relaxing in, got hit with sun
6:17 pm
all day. so what we did is we renovated her basement to also act as a makeshift bedroom for her. but while we were doing that, we learned she was maybe the biggest sharks fan we've ever met. >> so shadow jumpers got in touch with the sharks foundation, who planned a fun filled two day event for addison starting friday. >> and we hear that there are young adults or youth out there dealing with chronic or critical illnesses, but they're, you know, big sharks fans and hockey brings them joy. we always want to step in and bridge that gap, not only does addison get to skate with the sharks, she got a custom hockey stick cut for her locker room tour and gets to see her first nhl game just some of the excitement on her packed itinerary. >> one of the biggest things she's taking away from the thrilling two day experience is gratitude. >> thank you and i appreciate everything in san jose. >> zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> and you can see addison is a really good skater and has a nice wrist shot and i am so happy that all those groups and the sharks came together to make her dream come true. >> yeah, her moves are really
6:18 pm
impressive. so this is just the beginning? >> yes, absolutely. uh, unfortunately, it's just the beginning of the reign to get ready, get those umbrellas, get those galoshes. >> whatever you got, sandhya. absolutely >> and larry and dion, you know, it is going to be a stretch of at least five days where you're going to have to deawithhe rainy weather. you're gng t have to deal with not only that, the gusty conditions at times. so we're going to take a look at what is happening with live doppler seven. excuse me. steady. widespread rain tonight across the region as we get you into the north bay street level radar, you will start to notice some moderate rain falling across sonoma napa road and moving across highway 12. and also across calistoga tonight. so definitely have the rain gear handy if you have friday night plans from san francisco to daly city across highway 35, the sunset district, you're seeing some steady rain right now, and in the east bay it has lightened up around some parts of the emeryville area. also around walnut creek, concord, clayton,
6:19 pm
pleasant hill, and around the south bay. san jose seeing light showers. some moderate rain right around the santa cruz mountains. we're going to widen the picture here. this area of low pressure is still spinning off the coast. that's the second part of this system. the front is pushing in and we have seen some lightning strikes in the central valley. now we want to show you those temperatures. and they're pretty much in the 40s and 50s. these are warmer storms. so it's not terribly chilly outside. here are some live views from our tower cameras. and you can see not only wet roadways but wet runway at sfo as well. take it easy out there. raindrops on the exploratorium lens. here's a look at the big game as the niners host the packers at kickoff 515. there will be rain around. it's going to be breezy 59 degrees at fourth quarter. soggy night, 57 degrees. i'm going to show you that timeline in just a moment. looking at the headlines. and tonight wet and breezy to gusty stronger storm for sunday monday with those downpours, a possibility of thunder and then we have the
6:20 pm
potential for some storm related damage. what's going to happen is the ground becomes saturated, trees are weak and so they will be easier to topple along with flooding on roadways, minor flooding on streams and creeks as we start to notice some excessive rain potential moving into the picture first tomorrow, it's a marginal risk. a slight to marginal risk for the north bay. and then you will notice that expands across all of the bay area virtually sunday into monday. as that stronger storm comes in. that is when that sunday, monday time period, a flood watch will go up for solano county 4 p.m. sunday until 1 a.m. monday. it starts tomorrow for lake and mendocino counties. definitely expect rapid rises on streams and creeks, shallow landslides are possible as well. today through wednesday. that stormy pattern multiple storms coming through heavy rain at times with gusty winds at times. possibility of the power outages downed trees and the flooding potential with landslides there. it's a level one through tonightrillionain brief downpours, thunderstorm chance. it is gusty out there
6:21 pm
and with the rain coming in, if those thunderstorms do develop, you're going to see ponding on the roadways as well. timing this out for you. 9 p.m. you see the light to moderate rain across the region. the rain turns over to scattered showers. so tomorrow morning, if you're thinking i want to get outside and run some errands or do something, you have an opportunity. it's not widespread rain. it's just very scattered showers in nature. and then the rain becomes more widespread in the afternoon along the coastline and then spreading at 5:00, 530, you will notice that levi stadium is right in the middle of that widespread rain. it's going to continue through the night. and then sunday morning we go back to shower mode until late sunday into monday, when rain becomes steadier and heavier again through sunday morning. most of you are going to be in that three quarters of an inch to an inch plus category three santa cruz mountains over two inches san jose. just under a half an inch. you add on the additional storms and we'll be talking about rain in inches almost a half a foot in the santa cruz mountains. some parts up around the north bay coast, and the
6:22 pm
hills could see as much as eight inches of rain and a winter storm warning. 10 p.m. tonight until 1 a.m. tuesday. heavy wet snow in the sierra. snow levels 6000 to 7000ft, 1 to 3ft above 7000ft. so hazardous travel morning temperatures 40s 50s. afternoon will be a wet one. uh- temperatures in the 50s and 60s and the accuweather seven day forecast. it's a two for tomorrow through monday day level one tuesday going into wednesday. but that's not going to be an all day thing. and that's a weaker system, larry. ponchos and layers for the 40 niners. absolutely. and go have a great time. you know the niners can get it done. they've played in other parts of the country. >> absolutely. >> with worse rock. >> good point. yeah. all right. thank you. well coming up next a story that might make you glad to live in the bay area. or maybe

6:32 pm
we stop that? the answer might be in the salinas valley. >> yeah. abc seven news reporter lyanne melendez is here. this is a really innovative program. yeah. >> this is a great example of a man who found a solution to a big problem that he had, right? a judge in salinas got tired of sending young offenders to prison for murder, assault, gang violence. the list goes on. now. instead, he reached out to the community to do what few imagined would work. and so giving hope to teens facing incarceration or experiencing hardship has been his mission for the past 23 years. these wide open fields make salinas one of the world's most famous farming communities. but several years ago, salinas also gained an unwanted reputation. >> salinas was the murder capital for juveniles here in the state of california. my job was to send kids to prison, and you thought there must be a better way we can do something. all right. and all this we put in, we put in a whole new water

wildlife researchers because of its impact on migrating animals. >> abc7 news anchor dan ashley has our story, which was produced with the help of our partners at the local media associations covering climate collaborative reporter miles of wall stretching into the horizon , dividing the united states from mexico. >> but now there is growing evidence that newly constructed sections are also dividing a critical habitat, disrupting natural. migrations both of animals that eventually manage to work their way through the fence, and those too large to cross at all. >> the border wall is creating a massive continental scale environmental experiment that we're all along for the ride with, and it's going to affect the evolutionary history of these species. >> emily burns is a researcher with the nonprofit sky island alliance. over the last several years, the group has been placing wildlife cameras along sections of the border wall in arizona to document its impact on any given night. smaller animals like these javelinas can slip through small openings at

the base, perhaps followed by a lucky porcupine. but now watch as this black bear, a species endangered in mexico, paces along the length of the wall, searching for an opening, while even an agile mountain lion is blocked as well and they are a species that need a lot of space. >> mountain lions, especially the males. once they get old enough and leave their mother, they need to establish their own territory and they're just looking for simple things that that everybody looks for shelter, food and mates and water. you know, that's what it's all about. and that extended range can be critical for long terme survival. >> it's a lesson we've certainly learned here in the bay area where urban areas intersect with open space migration pathways that can often extend hundreds of miles. zara mcdonald is with the bay area puma project. her group tracks mountain lions and other animals with wildlife cameras similar to those being used at the border. she worries about obstacles like freeways that can make it difficult for

the animals to roam freely and mate, meaning that sub-pop nations themselves, you know, are more susceptible to disease is to inbreeding. >> and so genetic disorders. >> her group lobbies for land bridges or storm drain type tubes that can make crossing dangerous areas safer. >> finding those solutions means there are sections of freeways that lions are being killed on. >> back in arizona, the sky island alliance is working on solutions for the border wall as well. >> it can be a no cost solution of just opening floodgates in the wall to allow storm water to drain. um, either way, across the border, those can be used by many animals to cross back and forth. as much as i don't want to live with the wall in our backyard, we are. and so our priority has to be finding creative ways that don't jeopardize national security. but make it better for wildlife. >> protecting a critical animal habitat in a landscape, being changed by humans. dan ashley

front in the area of low pressure is still off the coastline. it's right there. so we have two parts to this system . the front will continue to march in and that means we will see some pockets of moderate to heavy rain tonight. once the front passes behind it, we'll see scattered showers for tomorrow morning. you'll get a little bit of a breather at times and then tomorrow afternoon evening the rain picks up again. so through tonight it's a level one. brief downpours, gusty chance of thunder ponding on the roadways. if we do see any thunderstorms as we look at the hourly forecast, you can pretty much see when we are expecting the rain. it tapers a little and picks back up again going into tomorrow. here's a look at your high temperatures 50s and 60 for your saturday. and as we look ahead to other systems stronger, one is coming in sunday, but not until late at night. in morning it will just be showery. so sunday night into early monday is when the heaviest part of the rain is expected, and this is a more significant rainfall with this one. and then a weaker system late tuesday going into wednesday after that.

45 years, 38 at stanford. abc seven sports brought to you by your northern california honda dealers. everybody's asking. about the niners. they're favored by almost ten points. the rain, though, introduces an element of unknown. well you say it's actually harder to play in the rain than it is to play in the snow. yeah yeah, it is, because the football can get slippery. you get guys in the mud slipping and sliding all over the place. so it kind of gives a little bit of an edge to the underdog in this game. but i still think the niners will win by 10 or 2 touchdowns. they they should anyway. >> we should definitely have hope larry. but you know what it's going to be widespread rain at kickoff. >> yeah. well you know dress warmly and you know take your ponchos from your ponchos. yes yes. >> all right. well that's it for this edition of abc seven news at six. everybody i'm dionne lim, i'm larry beil for sandyha patel >> all of us here at abc seven news. have a good night, and we'll see you back here at 11.
