20th i'm stephanie sierra. let's get right to that storm. lisa, i know you're tracking the latest. >> how about go niners i know where's my that first that passes. >> oh it looks kind of like an orange red. >> but yeah. go niners. yeah okay. yes. we have a level two system. we have a bit of a break right now as we look at live doppler seven. you can see all the rain. so where's the break. but if we go in closer you can see the east bay and the south bay. not a whole lot going on, but some lightrillionain here in the north bay. and as we look s. so showers this morning, the rain gets heavier this afternoon. and we're going to see the rainfall accumulate right on through monday with the chance of thunderstorms so widespread rain, gusty winds in the hills and as we look at the time frame here, you'll notice that by noontime we'll begin to increase those rain chances all around the bay for that widespread moderate to heavy rain. and then by the evening hours and overnight hours, this is going to take us through early sunday. 56 right now in hayward is 51. in sonoma, temperatures are warmer than

they were yesterday. the winds not a big factor, but it will be gusty in the hills. and that's where we have winds over 29 miles an hour. here's a look at the rest of the day. then notice that we've got the break right on through the eight 9:00 hour, and then a few showers continue and look what happens by later on this evening. we are really in the thick of it. we'll talk about rain totals and the rest of the weekend. the niners forecast and the week ahead. stephanie. >> all right lisa thank you. well the wet weather is expected to have an impact on local businesses throughout the coming days to abc. seven news reporter tim johns spoke to several owners here in san francisco who have been preparing, to the disappointment of many. >> another wet weekend is in store for the bay area, preferably don't like it so much, especially when it's really flooding. >> and then you know, it's kind of scary in san francisco friday night, it was umbrellas up for many people outside on the streets. >> inside, though, preparations were taking place in a different way. >> san franciscans tend to stay

home during the rain, so it can be challenging for businesses. >> amy cleary works with the golden gate restaurant association. she says bad weather can put a massive strain on local eateries, especially on weekends. >> i think it also depends on where you are in the city. i think there are some neighborhoods downtown. town places like that tend to be busier during the week. last year, many restaurants and other businesses were hit by severe flooding after a particularly stormy winter. >> that was true at alta taqueria, where they were forced to close for several days. >> the people don't come in for a long time, so when we reopen the people don't know we are open and they don't know what how long can i take to reopen again after last winter's heavy rain, a lot of businesses say they've learned a lot of new things. >> several of them tell us they're taking extra precautions to make sure they don't have problems this time around. that includes physical precautions like extra barriers and sandbags, but also intant things like turning to the internet when foot traffic is down. since

we do have like the online services, it kind of boosted that. and while most told us they weren't fans of the rain, others say when it happens, there's no better place to be. >> i love the rain. i like personally standing in the middle of the street while it's raining, but like pouring, not drizzling. >> in san francisco. tim johns abc seven news. >> in the north bay, firstrillionesponders are also preparing as the storms could bring flooding and landslides to the area. more than three inches of rain is expected to fall on the region over the next several days. p-g-and-e's says it's staffing utility crews and stocking up on transformers and power poles in case there are outages. many local residents spent the day preparing by filling sandbags and tarping roofs. >> i am here to prevent shefs uh- water flooding the front of my house, diverting some water to get some sandbags to divert because of the heavy rains coming. >> yeah, those heavy rains and winds are expected to continue into wednesday. as lisa was

mentioning. now you can keep track of the rain anytime with the same live doppler seven that lisa and our meteorologist team uses. just search abc seven bay area in your devices app store to download it right now. well, new this morning. faculty members across all 23 california state university campuses are expected to strike starting on monday. more than 29,000 employees plan to strike all next week as students return from winter break. the union represents its multiple positions, including professors, coaches and counselors. they called for the strike after csu officials announced a 5% pay hike, which would start on monday. the unions instead want a 12% salary increase. chancellor mildred garcia says no classes will be canceled and none of the campuses will close. despite these strikes. now another union has reached a tentative agreement with the california state university system. the teamsters union has agreed to a three year contract.

it covers 1100 skilled trades employees across all but one of the csu's 23 campuses. the agreement must be ratified by union members before it goes to the csu board of trustees for approval. in march, the teamsters intend to call off a five day strike plan for next week. more details are expected from both sides in the coming days. as san francisco mayor london breed won't be signing the ceasefire resolution for the israel-hamas war, mayor breed says she grappled with the request from the board of supervisors for ten days. she also mentioned she spoke with friends and faith leaders on both sides and prayed for clarity. in a statement, she said in part, quote, when we advocate for people, thousands of miles away, we should still care for people who are right here in san francisco, the people who are in pain and afraid, and we are all san franciscans. we don't close people off. we open our arms and our minds, and we must get through this together. now happening today, tens of thousands of people will rally against abortion here in san francisco. so if you are in the

area, be prepared for delays because of street closures. the 20th annual walk for life is supposed to start around 130 in the afternoon on market street and end at civic center plaza. a counter protest is planned for embarcadero plaza, now. a vigil was held last night at saint dominic's catholic church in san francisco ahead of today's walk in the east bay. two people were shot friday afternoon on the platform of the pittsburgh center bart station. the shooting happened just before 4:00 and forced the entire station to be shut down for over four hours, so police could gather evidence, bart says one victim is in critical condition and the other has a leg injury. no arrests have been made yet. we also have new developments on the peninsula. one of the four victims on board that plane that crashed near half moon bay has now been identified. a bay area family confirmed to the chronicle. their 27 year old son, isaac zimmerman of san francisco, has died. his partner, emma pearl wilmer shields, and two other people

>> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> yeah, so much excitement. well pickleball fans in san francisco rallied against plans to limit the game at the presidio wall court. oh, no, we won't go. >> oh, no, we won't go. oh, no, we won't go. >> yeah, you hear him right there. the rec and parks department plans to remove the pickleball boundary lines and return them to tennis courts. this follows months of battles between pickleball fans and presidio heights neighbors who have been fighting against the courts in their neighborhood for months now. >> we have neighbors that are that are close and they don't like the noise they've complained about about parking in their neighborhood, presidio pickleball courts have been, you know, a nice staple in the community. >> and we've been really enjoying it. >> i really hope that it continues and we can, you know, solve whatever discrepancy exists in a way that allows the most fun for the most amount of residents, the city told abc seven news. >> the neighborhood park doesn't have the infrastructure to accommodate the large amount of

people coming to the courts. new courts are coming to mosconi park playground this spring, and they are looking for additional spaces. and the south bay former san jose mayor sam liccardo says bart should be scaled down. liccardo, who is one of bart's main advocates, believes the more than $12 billion expansion into san jose's downtown area is too expensive, according to our media partners at the mercury news. he said he's thought about dialing back the project since 2022 while he was still in office. liccardo suggests removing the connection from san jose's darren station and santa clara from the proposal, while the university of california says this year will be the largest undergraduate class ever for the uc system, nearly 300,000 students enrolled this year. that number also includes 195,000 californians, which is an all time high. there's a growing gender gap, with 27,000 more women enrolling than men. uc berkeley enrolled more than 25,000 students this year,

compared to fewer than 20,000 just a decade ago. so we have new developments with the controversial delta tunnel project. a new lawsuit challenges the development after reports and experts said it would be destructive to the ecosystem. the tunnel intends to divert the sacramento river, but it could potentially hurt endangered fish and the communities near it more than a dozen environmental groups joined in this suit, and they're calling for the state to explore other options like water conservation and groundwater storage for a third straight time. a judge is delaying a ruling in a case involving both california's racial justice act and the antioch police texting scandal. abc seven news reporter anser hassan explains. as it's expected to be a landmark ruling with implications across california, this case will in large part determine whether or not law enforcement believes that the racial justice act has teeth, or whether it doesn't, or whether they're going to get away with business as usual, or

whether they're going to have to really make changes. >> i think that's the impact that this case is going to have on policing in california. >> carmela caamano represents teriann pew. he's currently on trial with three others facing a range of charges, including murder and attempted murder related to a gang shooting. he's also one of the individuals singled out in the antioch police texting scandal in april, caamano filed a motion under california's racial justice act, which allows a person charged or convicted of a crime to challenge racial bias. in their case, caamano says the texting scandal exposed that bias, and the prosecution doesn't dispute it. >> there were three officers who testified at multiple preliminary hearings in this case, and never let to on the facts that we've learned through their texting in their private phones. >> a ruling on possible remedies was expected on friday, but for a third time, the judge delayed his decision with no indication when he will rule. possible outcome includes reduced charges or dropping of special enhancements. caamano says the

judge's delays suggests he's being meticulous about the ruling, knowing the ramifications means a lot of it is novel. >> there hasn't been a case of this nature with this magnitude of reach within the state. >> cheryl cobbs is the mother of trent allen, another defendant in the case. she's been to every hearing and hopes a ruling comes soon. it's just a long road right now and just being patient right now. >> but it's hard in martinez, anser hassan abc7 news. >> a new house in the east oakland is opening its doors to local mothers and their children struggling with homelessness and this house intends to create a safe community for mothers working to overcome trauma and a nurturing home for their kids. it's funded mostly from community donations, $550,000 was raised in honor of a woman named anna flynn. she was a teen mother who lost her life after struggling with trauma and housing insecurity. think about how many families and how many people will come in and live in

this home, and have that restorative process really accessing their strengths and their beauty and that saves the government, the system, the taxpayers. >> it saves the lives of the people we're serving you can donate to the cause online through the bay area community services website. >> right. now to an amazing rescue story out of michigan. a man fell through the ice and was rescued by his own dog. >> send your pup here. we'll see. come to me. >> you just heard a michigan state police officer trying to call the dog of a man who had just fallen through a frozen lake after his rescue line came up short. the officer quickly came up with an idea to help the man get to safety. but first he needed the help of a furry friend named ruby. >> not knowing if she would listen to me or not knowing if she would hear my verbal commands, i asked him and she perked up so i knew at least she could hear me. at first i tried

to see, you know, if she would just bite onto the rope, but she didn't want anything to do with that. she kind of just wanted to play and wow, incredible. >> ruby was able to get the rope to her owner. the man, thankfully was pulled to safely safety rather and miraculously only suffered minor injuries after spending 16 minutes in the frigid water. that's just incredible. kudos to ruby there, lisa. you know that area, of course, in michigan, this ice fishing is very common, right? and you know, we've talked about this. i have family up in that area and i would often see their dogs come kind of sit with them. they'll put the heaters there, you know. so it's a good reminder just to be extra careful. but right. >> we're seeing these big swings with temperatures below freezing and then up to 40 degrees. so it's not always certain that it's frozen solid. right. we are looking at some rainfall that has turned a pretty light through the overnight hours. it will pick up again throughout the afternoon. and that's when we get into our level two system. that will last through the evening and the overnight hours. so a phase one is over with, which was yesterday,

today. now we're in between systems. you can see the lightrillionain. live doppler seven right now into the north bay. and the rain is all widespread from guerneville to healdsburg, santa rosa 1 to 1. and as you go down through san francisco a few light sprinkles on the peninsula. you can see more offshore. and the santa cruz mountains looking at some very wet weather through the summit here and down through los gatos. so we'll begin to pick up in thatrillionainfall through about the afternoon hours. and then it is really going to stay solid right through the day. right now it is 56, in san rafael, 52 in danville. there are also areas of fog and those breezy winds in the upper elevations. so look outside here. and this morning will be wet and breezy with those gusty winds. upper elevations out of the south, our stronger storm comes in to later on today. and then this will last through sunday. and then we have the sunday night into monday. so there's really two more systems. and then looking at the possibility of some flooding with the trees down, the good

news is, is that when this shuts off on monday afternoon, soon we'll see those creeks and streams quickly recede into the evening. and overnight hours monday into tuesday. here's a look at 630 this morning. and you'll notice that most of the rain is still offshore. but as we get until about one 2:00, the north bay looks to be overspread with the moderate rain, and then we'll see the rest of the bay area area, followed by three, 4:00 and then throughout the overnight hours 10:00. notice this just solid rain right through this time tomorrow when things begin to lighten up. so we're talking about a good deal of rain. and then by late sunday into monday, we're going to do it all again with more unstable air and the possibility of a thunderstorm. so here's a look at what you can expect through 11:00 tonight. near an inch in the north bay, you can see 0.83 san francisco, quarter of an inch mountain view, a third of an inch san san ramon. and then as we get into sunday night, a little more rain and over an

inch and a half to an inch and three quarters in the wettest locations of the north bay. so winter storm warning above 6 to 7000ft. you can expect up to 19in of snow. there's a look at the resorts about five inches tahoe, so we'll go back and forth between rain and snow. 38 right now at the tahoe valley airport, and it's going to be soggy. kickoff at five, 1559 degrees today. upper 50s to near 60. and we'll be looking at several rainy days. the accuweather seven day forecast with the more downpours tonight, sunday night into monday, and then just spotty rain showers after that. we'll be

from the team tomorrow though. the future of sports illustrated magazine is in question after nearly all of the staff received layoff notices, the arena group, the company that operates the magazine, had its license revoked by swease parent company , authentic brands group. authentic brands says it intends to keep sports illustrated going. however, it's unclear what that could look like. the magazine was launched in 1954. by time, it became the most important sports publication in the country through iconic photos and long form stories. and the south bay, a very sweet story, a wish is coming true for a 12 year old girl living with a rare disorder that's had a big impacts on her life. now the young girl is a huge san jose sharks fan, and tonight the team will help her live out her dream. abc seven news south bay reporter zac fuentes has this story. >> take a look at what's sure to be one of the most memorable days of 12 year old addison

kypreos life. how much fun have you had today? >> lots of fun. i love, i've loved this day. this is probably one of the best days ever, though. >> addison and her family now live in wisconsin, their roots are in northern california. addison is not just a sharks fan, but possibly one of their biggest. she got the surreal opportunity to join them on the ice at their practice rink. >> i raced some of the guys and i obviously beat them, um, despite addison's energy and enthusiasm, she's been dealing with a devastating disorder. >> addison suffers from a rare skin disorder called epp. basically, like a few minutes outside on the wrong day can equal pain. that's equal to a second degree. like burn addison's disorder also led to stage five liver failure. >> the nonprofit shadow jumpers helps families who are faced with rare sun disorders. they connected with the kypreos family as addison was going through liver treatments. and what we found was she uh- her bedroom where she was relaxing in, got hit with sun all day. >> so what we did is we renovated her basement to also act as a makeshift bedroom for her. but while we were doing

now, but as we go through the rest of the day, the rain will gather and be more widespread throughout the entire. afternoon. the overnight. hours. right now it is 50, in palo alto, 49 in concord, upper elevation, south winds are keeping the temperatures mild, but it is breezy and this is going to keep for a kind of a raw, wet day throughout the afternoon. it is eight degrees warmer in santa rosa and that of course, due to those 25 to 30 mile an hour winds. here's a look at what you can expect today. and as we go through the next few hours notice it's not until late in the morning and the early afternoon when you see that heavier rain. this is 6:00. between 2 and 6:00 and through the overnight hours we will not s a break. so that is whe we're going to talk about accumulate rainfall and then the final system to plot out for you sunday night. stephanie. yeah. busy weekend ahead lisa. >> thank you. in parts of san francisco flood barricades are already up in preparation for more rain. abc seven news

reporter ryan curry has the latest. >> san francisco has learned a lot from last year. sandbag stations are stocked and ready to go in folsom street is taking advantage at the edge of the road. big barriers, public works hopes will stop rising water from getting into these buildings. this street got hit hard by last winter storms, but flooding isn't the only concern. rain soaked trees can be dangerous. >> these trees seem to take on a lot more water, and once they get top heavy and that soil is loose, they're going to come down. frank vasquez and his team will be ready to go this weekend. >> it's hard to predict when a tree might come down, but when they do look out, just this week, a giant eucalyptus tree fell in golden gate park and it wasn't even raining. >> when you're under pressure, things start to happen. you can make wrong decisions. so just going over some of the safety issues. and when to leave a situation, when it's safe to work in a situation, others aren't letting the rain stop them. >> at luxford and hayes valley,

calm down for a dry day on tuesday. here's a look in the next several hours. notice this forecast model continues to gather the rain as we get through the afternoon, so two 3:00 some moderate downpours and it just continues through the evening hours. you can see the heavier rain here right along the coast. and then as we get through the overnight hours, no break until about this time tomorrow. so here's a look at saturday 11:00, three quarters of an inch in richmond. at least that up in the north bay. about the same along the coast, and anywhere from a third to a half inch along the bay shore, adding in sunday night and you'll notice we're up to over an inch and a half an inch and three quarters here in santa rosa, an inch on the coast, and the santa cruz mountains over two inches, maybe 2.5in. this is sunday night. and remember, we have another round into monday winter storm warning, and this will take us through early tuesday, 8 to 16in between 6 and 7000ft. right now it's 38 degrees. so we
