intention. yes of course. >> all right. well we are looking at a soggy game for sure. we're right in the middle of a series of systems that are going to continue to bring us wet weather. this is the second one. as we look at live doper seven getting in closer. the heavier rain there from bolinas, right along the coast. olema and then just some scattered light showers across central marin, but up to the north for novato and san rafael. more light showers over into oakland and san leandro. it's a wet start to your saturday and out through blin a few scattered showers across the bay area. right now. we are a bit of a in a break, but you can see offshore there are there's more rain and down through the santa cruz mountains, saratoga and boulder creek. it is a wet start to the day. level two system as the rain continues to intensify throughout the middle of the afternoon, right now it is 57, in hayward, with temperatures in the low 50s up in the north bay south winds keeping it rather breezy and warmer. this morning. and there's also fog. so

certainly a bit treacherous out there. but right now is the lighter part of the system because as we go through the afternoon, you'll notice that the rain just gets heavier. this is 230. and then by 6:00 at night it is all over the bay area. it continues right o through the game, through the overnit hours. and then this time sunday morning, a break before a third round heads our way. so we'll time it out for you in the future and talk rain totals in a few minutes. stephanie. >> yeah, i got to get that umbrella handy. thank you. lisa well, the wet weather is expected to have an impact on local businesses throughout the coming days to abc. seven news reporter tim johns spoke to several owners here in san francisco who have already been preparing, to the disappointment of many another wet weekend is in store for the bay area. >> preferably don't like it so much, especially when it's really flooding. and then, you know, it's kind of scary. >> in san francisco friday night, it was umbrellas up for many people outside on the streets, inside the preparations were taking place in a different

way. >> san franciscans tend to stay home during the rain so it can be challenging for businesses. >> amy cleary works with the golden gate restaurant association. she says bad weather can put a massive strain on local eateries, especially on weekends. >> i think it also depends on where you are in the city. i think there are some neighborhoods downtown, places like that tend to be busier during the week. >> last year, many restaurants and other businesses were hit by severe flooding after a particularly stormy winter. that was true at el taqueria, where they were forced to close for several days. >> the people don't come in for a long time, so when we reopen the people don't know we are open and they don't know what. how long can i take to reopen again after last winter's heavy rain? >> a lot of businesses say they've learned a lot of new things. several of them tell us they're taking extra precautions to make sure they don't have problems at this time around. that includes physical precautions like extra barriers and sandbags, but also

intangible things like turning to the internet when foot traffic is down. >> since we do have like the online services, it kind of boosted that. >> and while most told us they weren't fans of the rain, others say when it happens, there's no better place to be. >> i love the rain. i like personally standing in the middle of the street while it's raining, but like pouring, not drizzling in san francisco. >> tim johns abc seven news. >> well, in the north bay, firstrillionesponders are also preparing as the storms could bring flooding and landslides to the area. more than three inches of rain is expected to fall in the region over the next several days. p-g-and-e's says it's staffing utility crews and stocking up on transformers and power poles in case there are outages. many local residents spent the day preparing by filling sandbags and tarping roofs. >> i am here to prevent uh- water flooding the front of my house. diverting some water to get some sandbags to divert because of the heavy rains coming. >> the heavy rains and winds are

expected to continue into wednesday. now you can keep track of the rain. any time with the same live doppler seven that our meteorologist team uses. just search abc seven bay area and your devices app store so you can download it right now. new. this morning, faculty members across all 23 california state university campuses are expected to strike starting on monday. more than 29,000 employees plan to strike all next week as students return from winter break. the union represents multiple positions, including professors, coaches and counselors. they called for the strike after csu officials announced a 5% pay hike, which would start on monday. now, the unions instead want a 12% salary increase. csu chancellor mildred garcia says no classes will be canceled and none of the campuses will close, despite these strikes. now another union has reached a tentative agreement with the california state university system. the teamsters union has agreed to a three year contract. it covers

1100 skilled trades employees across all but one of the csu's 23 campuses. the agreement must be ratified by union members before it goes to the csu board of trustees for approval. in march, the teamsters intend to call off a five day strike planned for next week. more details are expected from both sides in the coming days. san francisco mayor london breed won't be signing the ceasefire resolution for the israel-hamas war. mayor breed says she's grappled with the request from the board of supervisors for ten days now. she also mentioned she spoke with friends and faith leaders on both sides, and prayed for clarity in a statement, she said in part, quote, when we advocate for people thousands of miles away, we should still care for people who are right here in san francisco, the people who are in pain and afraid. we are all san franciscans. we don't close people off. we open our arms and our minds. we must get through this together. well, happening today, tens of thousands of people will rally against

abortion in san francisco. so if you are in the area, be prepared for delays because of these street closures. the 20th annual walk for life is supposed to start around 130 in the afternoon on market street and end at civic center plaza. a counter protest is planned for embarcadero plaza. a vigil was held last night at saint dominic's catholic church here in san francisco, ahead of today's walk in the east bay. two people were shot friday afternoon on the platform of the pittsburgh center bart station. the shooting happened just before 4:00 and forced the entire station to be shut down for over four hours, so police could gather evidence, bart says one victim is in critical condition and the other has a leg injury. no arrests have been made yet. new developments now on the peninsula. one of the four victims on board the plane that crashed near half moon bay has now been identified. a bay area family confirmed to the chronicle their 27 year old son, isaac zimmerman of san francisco, has died. his

playoff tickets with field access, fans will be able to enjoy several watch parties throughout the bay area on saturday, and if you plan on going to the game, i'll see you there in san jose. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> so much excitement. looks like a blast. well now to this. do you think bart should be scaled down? former san jose mayor sam liccardo thinks so. liccardo, who's one of bart's main advocates, believes the more than $12 billion expansion into san jose's downtown area is too expensive. according to our media partners at the mercury news. he said he's thought about dialing back the project since 2022 while he was still in office. now, liccardo suggests removing the connection from san jose's diridon station and santa clara from the proposal. the university of california says this year will be the largest undergraduate class ever for the uc system. nearly 300,000 students enrolled this year. that number also includes 195,000 californians, which is an all time high. there's a

growing gender gap, though, with 27,000 more women enrolling than men. uc berkeley enrolled more than 25,000 students this year, compared to fewer than 20,000 just a decade ago. we have new developments with the controversial delta tunnel project. a new lawsuit challenges the development after reports and experts said it would be destructive to the eco system. the tunnel intends to divert the sacramento river, but it could potentially hurt endangered fish and the communities near it. more than a dozen environmental groups joined in this suit. they're calling for the state to explore other options, like water conservation and groundwater storage. now for the third straight time, a judge is delaying a ruling in a case involving both california's racial justice act and the antioch police texting scandal. abc seven news reporter anser hassan explains it's expected to be a landmark ruling with implications across california. >> this case will in large part determine whether or not law

enforcement believes that the racial justice act has teeth or whether it doesn't, whether they're going to get away with business as usual, or whether they're going to have to really make changes. i think that's the impact that this case is going to have on policing in california. >> carmela carmona represents terri-ann pugh. he's currently on trial with three others facing a range of charges, including murder and attempted murder related to a gang shooting. he's also one of the individuals singled out in the antioch police texting scandal in april, carmona filed a motion under california's racial justice act, which allows a person charged or convicted of a crime to challenge racial bias. in their case, carmona says the texting scandal exposed that bias, and the prosecution doesn't dispute it. there were three officers who testified at multiple preliminary hearings in this case and never let on to the facts that we've learned through their texting in their private phones. in a ruling on possible remedies, was expected on friday. but for a third time, the judge delayed his decision

with no indication when he will rule possible outcomes includes reduced charges or dropping of special enhancements. carmona says the judge's delays suggests he's being meticulous about the ruling, knowing the ramifications is a lot of it is novel. >> there hasn't been a case of this nature with this magnitude of reach within the state. >> cheryl cobbs is the mother of trent allen, another defendant in the case. she's been to every hearing in hopes a ruling comes soon. >> it's just a long road right now and just being patient right now. but it's hard in martinez, anser hassan abc7 news. >> a new house in east oakland is opening its doors to local mothers and their children struggling with homelessness. anna's house intends to create a safe community for mothers working to overcome trauma and a nurturing home for their kids. it's funded mostly from community donations. $550,000 was raised in honor of a woman

named anna flynn. she was a teen mother who lost her life after struggling with trauma and housing insecurity. think about how many families and how many people will come in and live in this home and have that restorative process really accessing their strength and their beauty and that saves the government, the system, the taxpayers. >> it saves the lives of the people we're serving. you can donate to the cause online through the bay area community services website. >> well, now to an amazing rescue story out of michigan. a man fell through the ice and was rescued by his own dog. >> send your pup here. we'll see you come to me. >> you just heard a michigan state police officer trying to call the dog of a man who had just fallen through a lake that was partially frozen after his rescue line came up short. the officer quickly came up with an idea to help the man get to safety. but first he'd need the

help of a furry friend named ruby. >> not knowing if she would listen to me or not, knowing if she would hear my verbal commands, i asked him. and she perked up so i knew at least. she could hear me. at first i tried to see, you know, if she would just bite onto the rope, but she didn't want anything to do with that. she kind of just wanted to play and wow, ruby was able to get the rope to her owner. >> the man was pulled to safety. miraculously, though, he only suffered minor injuries after spending 16 minutes in the frigid water. so kudos to ruby. there certainly ice fishing is very common in the midwest. we were talking about this earlier, lisa. i certainly saw it a lot in the u.p, the upper peninsula, where people would bring their heaters out and they'd often have their pets there. it was an unusual all right, but, you know, and it would be solid. >> you wouldn't have to worry about those areas that would break or crack. but now with the swings in temperatures that we're seeing, in fact, as you heard about much of the east coast buried in snow and sub freezing temperatures, that's all going to be gone where

temperatures will climb through the 40s next week. so we're going to see a break as well. after this system and the sunday monday system for a pretty good end of the workweek, right now, a light to moderate rain showers continue to fill in across the bay area. so yesterday system behind us, anywhere from a half inch to three quarters of an inch. but right now we've got more rain east of olema on highway one, lagunitas and up to the north it's scattered about through sonoma and napa, and you can see 101, though certainly slick out there into the east bay. we're looking at the wet weather around six 8-80 in danville and san ramon. some showers headed your way and on the peninsula san francisco. it's been very light and scattered, but there is more offshore and down to the south there around montara, getting set for more rain into the east bay. further south from mill in the hills. there very light and scattered. and then through the santa cruz mountains. boulder creek. this is where we could pick up another inch and a half through tomorrow. so the coastal

hills, the north bay looking like the big winners with this second system, 57 in san rafael, 52 in danville. the look outside and cloudy skies, wet and breezy. this morning. and we're looking at that system tonight into sunday. and then the stronger system into sunday and monday with a chance of thunderstorm. and then with that accumulation precip we could see some flooding from the smaller creeks and streams, and also the possibility of some trees down with all that saturate and soil some shallow landslides are possible as well. so this model picking up on the rain increasing throughout the afternoon. look at it's just a solid area of rain from about. 1:00 through 4 or 5:00. and it just doesn't end as we get through the niners game. the beginning, the middle, the end, halftime. it's all rainy. it is light to moderate. so we're not going to see the very heavy downpours. and as a result through early this tomorrow morning we'll see another half inch to three quarters of an inch. but then we've got another

round on top of that. this only takes us through sunday night. and you can see we're over an inch and a half to almost two inches. and then by monday, we will see the possibility of two and three inches possible of the north bay and coastal hills. so until 2:00, this is the winter storm warning in the sierra nevada, 8 to 16in. so the snow levels quite high. it's 38 degrees right now in truckee, a foot in donner through tuesday night and then 11in perhaps kirkwood. very rainy, upper 50s. right on through the afternoon in santa clara. and that's about our temperatures as well, with the breezy south winds and the accuweather seven day forecast level two system today. and then another one, probably the strongest one sunday into monday . chance of thunderstorms. and then things get quieter with lighter showers late tuesday into wednesday

raced some of the guys and i obviously beat them, um, despite addison's energy and enthusiasm, she's been dealing with a devastating disorder. >> addison suffers from a rare skin disorder called epp. basically, like a few minutes outside on the wrong day can equal pain. that's equal to a second degree. like burn addison's disorder also led to stage five liver failure. >> the nonprofit shadow jumpers helps families who are faced with rare sun disorders. they connected with the kypreos family as addison was going through liver treatments and what we found was she, uh, her bedroom when she was relaxing in got hit with sun all day. >> so what we did is we renovated her basement to also act as a makeshift bedroom for her. but while we were doing that, we learned she was maybe the biggest sharks fan we've ever met. >> so shadow jumpers got in touch with the sharks foundation. who planned a fun filled two day event for addison starting friday. >> and we hear that there are young adults or youth out there dealing with chronic or critical illnesses, but they're, you know , big sharks fans and hockey brings them joy. so we always

good morning. one more rain, high winds, all in store for us today. busy busy weekend. >> yes, that's right, we are just in the middle of it right now as that first system passed on through overnight, and now we still have the lightrillionain behind that system and it will fill in for heavier rain later on today. so as we get in closer right now to the east bay, let's check out san ramon and walnut creek. 680 a wet start to your saturday and right along the bay shore. it's dry now, but more rain from the peninsula there. sanco down through south city, up towards the north bay andhen nnyvale. not too bad, but you go back westward. and that's where the santa cruz mountains are really getting some wet weather that continues through the next several hours and into your sunday and monday

level two system later on today into the overnight hours. this will take us into early sunday 53 in fremont. right now, temperatures are just all in the 50s, so the breezy southerly winds keeps us milder. but we are looking at fog, low visibility, the slick roadways and really this morning is supposed to be our little bit of a break. that lighter rain. because as you look at this, this timeline, as we get through the later part of the morning, you can see the spotty showers. but by the afternoon it fills in and it really doesn't let up right on through the game, through the overnight hours and we will be talking about 1 to 2 inch totals in the north bay, the coastal hills. we'll detail all that, the specifics in a few minutes. stephanie. >> all right lisa, thank you. we'll staying on the storm in parts of san francisco. flood barricades are already up in preparation for more rain. abc seven news reporter ryan curry has the latest. >> san francisco has learned a lot from last year. san bag stations are stocked and ready to go in. folsom street is taking advantage at the edge of

the road. big barriers public works hopes will stop rising water from getting into these buildings. this street got hit hard by last winter storms, but flooding isn't the only concern. rain soaked trees can be dangerous since these trees seem to take on a lot more water, and once they get top heavy and that soil is loose, they're going to come down. frank vasquez and his team will be ready to go this weekend. it's hard to predict when a tree might come down, but when they do look out. just this week, a giant eucalyptus tree fell in golden gate park and it wasn't even raining. >> when you're under pressure, things start to happen. you can make wrong decisions. so just going over some of the safety issues and when to leave a situation, when it's safe to work in a situation others aren't letting the rain stop them. >> at luxford and hayes valley, you can't get ripped without getting a little wet. >> there might be some waterfalls happening to our left and to our right, but for the most part, we can still stay absolutely dry and get our workouts in. >> the outdoor gym has tents up

since december, the number of flu illnesses has caused more visits to the hospital than covid 19 hospitalizations. rates are highest among seniors in the east bay. now, some community groups in oakland want city leaders to resurrect a program they say saved lives. a rally on friday called for mayor shengtao to bring back operation cease fire. speakers cited a recent audit that found a rise in violence came after the city moved away from the program in 2020. proponents say the efforts, funded through operation cease fire, reduced homicides. 42% between 2012 and 2017. we're asking the administration to help us bring the community back to the table, bring us back to the table so we can make oakland safe again. >> let's stop playing. >> opponents of the effort to recall mayor sheng tao blame the rise in crime on former mayor libby schaaf and ousted police chief leronne armstrong. they say schaaf and armstrong moved away from operation cease fire,

55 in vallejo, 54 santa rosa. look outside. it's gray, wet and breezy and gusty upper elevation winds. this morning we'll look for the moderate to heavy rain throughout the entire afternoon and evening hours today. then the stronger system. sunday. monday a chance of a thunderstorm. so maybe a half inch san francisco today. three quarters of an inch. added on to that for sunday, monday and that could bring us to the possibility of some light flooding. maybe those creeks and streams in the north bay, perhaps some trees down. you know, the soil is very saturated, but then as we get into our break on monday and tuesday, things will quickly receive. we're not expecting a lot of problems with this mostly benefit rain, but we will get into some higher totals. certainly mount tam in the coastal hills, this is 7:00. that line of rain sliding to the east, and then as we get through the midday hour for some lighter showers. but look what happens. two 3:00 we're seeing the widespread rain and this is

right on through the evening hours and the overnight hours. so that's why we're looking at the rainfall first through 11:00 for about a half inch to a third of an inch from the east bay, san francisco, three quarters an inch the north bay. you can see an inch ben lomond. and then we'll add on just the day on sunday. and that takes us to the higher totals here. perhaps near two inches. this is sunday 11:00. and remember, we get the heavier rain sunday night into to monday with a chance of a thunderstorm. so that's why we could see two three inches in the higher elevations and the north bay. looking at 1 a.m. through tuesday, the wet snow going back and forth from rain to snow, 6 to 7000ft, 1 to 3ft. but the local resorts not as much because of that back and forth, that cement, that we're going to be getting 11in at kirkwood, 12in don, are some of the higher totals upper 50s to near 60. and then overnight, remember another wave of rain.
