storm impacts. gale. the sweet sound of victory. the 40 niners deliver a dramatic win this morning. fans still celebrating as the team waits to see who they face next sunday. 24 to 21 niners thrilling up to the last minute. yeah, pretty tense. an incredible game. and as lisa predicted, very soggy. >> yeah it was boy the rain was coming down and this morning just some very light rain out there. but we are looking at this ramping up throughout the day today as a level two system arrives tonight. so here's a look at the scattered showers in the north bay out towards fairfield, and a closer look into the south bay around mount hamilton and. and the summit around the santa cruz mountains. we have a flood watch in effect for this evening for all the north bay there anywhere from 8:00 tonight through 10 p.m. on

monday, as we're expecting some very heavy rain tonight. the gusty winds has brought us a wind advisory all along the coast from the north coast. the peninsula, the santa cruz mountains, winds could gusts up to 40 miles an hour. so throughout much of the day today, light to no rain and then the rain will pick up in the north bay about two 3:00. it's not until after 7:00 are we going to see the rain and gather a little bit more and fill in, but it's the overnight tonight where we could see a thunderstorm form the gusty winds and taking you through 630. not a whole lot is going on. but look what happens as we get towards 830, 9:00. we'll talk about more rainfall and the potential for the excessive rainfall. how much you can expect in a few minutes. stephanie >> all right. lisa. thank you. well, the rain is making it challenging for those who are out and about this weekend. here's a live look from the golden gate bridge. this morning where you can see the rain left some slick roads. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has advice on how to be extra

careful if you're out driving the streets of san francisco, getting soaked saturday umbrellas up and hoodies on, 40 niners fans taking cover. >> we want to show support for the bar for the niners. >> i'm surprised people are actually out here. i thought it was just gonna be us. none of these fans letting the rain put a damper on the day. >> it's a different vibe, right? >> we want to watch the game with everybody else. so just watching a game by ourselves at home sounds like i'm going to come out and i'm gonna see what it's all about. and i decided to stick with it. >> the san francisco fire department asking drivers to be aware of the wet roads. >> we asked people to slow down a little bit. uh- take extra time to be able to get to where they're going. we also ask the riders and people walking to where reflective clothing some with high visibility and they say it's a good idea to be a good neighbor. well, i think we've seen a lot of flooding in and around the neighborhoods, and the sf water department has a program called adopt a drain,

where someone in their neighborhood can be aware of the storm drain and it getting clogged up with leaves or other miscellaneous items that may be in the street. and what that does is it prevents water from flooding the streets. it's a reality. >> this small business owner knows all too well. her salon was flooded during last year's storm. >> what ended up happening is all the gutters were packed with stuff inside. so within minutes the flooding just happened. >> her business has been at this mission district location for nearly 14 years, and she knows how quickly the area can flood. this is the valley here, so it everything. >> it comes down this way and over on folsom, it's always, always flooded. the public works department putting up these barricades in preparation for the downpour. >> people stacking sandbags to protect their homes and businesses hoping for the best. >> god, i hope it doesn't flood. you know. >> tara campbell, abc seven

the man's car hit several objects, including a metal pole, before landing on its roof. the cause of the crash is still under investigation, and it's unknown if the weather played a role. happening today, half moon bay will be honoring the seven lives lost one year ago in a devastating mass shooting. the anniversary is on tuesday, when exactly a year ago, shunli zhao opened fire at both mountain mushroom farm and concord farms. the victims were reportedly targeted in what's being called workplace violence. tonight, they will be remembered at a candlelight vigil. in a moment of silence. it will be held at the boys and girls club event center from 4 to 6 p.m. this evening to new developments out of the middle east. israel defense forces say they uncovered a tunnel in southern gaza where hamas held hostages. here's what it looked like from inside of those tunnels. idf troops claim they killed several hamas fighters at the entrance of this tunnel. they reportedly found drawings that appear to be

welcome back. it's drizzly out this morning. here's a live look from our exploratorium camera looking at the san francisco skyline. heavier rain expected tonight with a level two storm. lisa, we'll have those details for you coming up. also new details this morning on the deadly avalanche at palisades tahoe ski resort, the chronicle reports the resort did not fire off any explosives on the ski run that day. their reportedly wasn't one, but actually two avalanches that trapped skiers on the mountain. resort officials said they set off charges a day prior to the avalanche, but typically don't set them off after light snowfall. also, new this morning, a bay area nonprofit is offering thousands of dollars for information leading to an arrest in an armed robbery. it happened at a palo alto taco bell, according to our media partners at the mercury news, mothers against murder is offering a $20,000 reward. the robbery happened last month on december 20th at 12:45 a.m.

inside the taco bell, located at east charleston road in palo alto. police say the suspect drove away towards highway 101, in a dark colored sedan. happening tomorrow. thousands of staff members at california state university campuses will begin the nation's largest public university strike. as many as 400,000 students will be affected before the spring semester begins. the california faculty association, which represents 29,000 staff, is demanding a 12% salary increase and expanded parental leave. san jose state, san francisco state and cal state east bay in hayward will all be impacted. the strike is expected to last for five days in san francisco now. the wet weather was not enough to stop both people on people on both sides of the abortion issue from coming out for multiple protest. it's anti-abortion activists descended on the city for the 20th annual walk for life. the march closed down market street

for much of the day yesterday. busses filled with participants came from hundreds of miles away . >> we wanted to come and show our support and show the world that, um, abortion is it's murder makes your heart feel good to stand up and show that you are proud to be pro-life. >> meanwhile, pro-abortion rights groups held a counter demonstration near the main library. protesters there called for reproductive justice in the wake of overturning roe v wade. >> i think that after roe was turned like so many people don't have access to abortion, and even though we might feel safe in this city, we might feel safe in this state. i think it's really important that we show up, especially when there's such a big force across the street. >> the supreme court has two upcoming cases on abortion in this terme. there's now a campaign to rally support for the proposition b ballot initiative here in san francisco. prop b is called be safer. the bill would fund full

police staffing and recruitment for 5 to 10 years, set a minimum officer staffing level and allow sfpd to request its own budget changes. those who backed prop b say it could improve public safety and financial transparency. prop b creates a recruitment fund. >> it creates the mandate and it creates the pathway to bring back the minimum number of officers we need to have in san francisco. >> those who oppose the proposition, including supervisor matt dorsey and mayor london breed, say it's a cop tax. they argue the city should staff the police department with existing funds, not new funds. pompey will be on the ballot on march fifth in the east bay. now, the effort to recall oakland mayor shang tao is moving towards a second phase organized. others say they'll now begin the process of publishing a notice of intent and generating a petition. the group hopes to collect 25,000 signatures, or about 10% of oakland's registered voters. leaders of the recall effort say

tao is responsible for high crime rates in the city. tao has not responded to the recall effort. the deadline for her to do so was on friday and the south bay. now the mayor of san jose, is calling for a new city policy to prevent encampment from returning to downtown. public spaces. last fall, the city used $2 million to move unhoused residents from the guadalupe river trail into interim housing. since then, some camps have returned. mayor matt mehan wants to create no return zones and limit where those encampments can be. he says the move would protect public areas. >> you were here prior to that cleanup effort. you can see why people stopped using the trail. this is a public trail here along the river that should be accessible to everyone, even some homeless advocates are pushing back on the proposal, calling it cruel. >> the city council's rules committee will take it up on wednesday. we are

niners fans to levi's stadium now, where it was a loud and proud saturday night. what a thrilling game. the 40 niners came out with a win against the packers. with a minute left in the game. now they advance to the nfc title game. it rained on and off during that game, but that did not dampen the spirit of the faithful all over the bay area. abc seven news reporter anser hassan caught up with fans . >> playoff football is where nfl legends are made. saturday night may have been a classic, but it was close. >> it was close. they played a good game, but you know, when the niners bang bang, we'll be back next week. >> it's probably the most stressed out i've been in a while to be honest. yeah but they made up for at the end in the end christian mccaffrey scored with a minute seven on the clock. >> the 40 niners trailed much of the second half, but as the saying goes, a win is a win. i thought it was wonderful. >> i mean it kept this at the edge of our seats. we were stressed you know.

much of your sunday is not a washout. take a look at the last several hours from live doppler seven, and you'll notice that the wave of lightrillionain continues to move on through. this is a 8-80 right now by fairfield and cordelia looking at some wet weather highway 12 and further south into the mountains. so upper elevations picked up over an inch and a third from mount diablo, mount tam, ben loman. so the upper elevations certainly did well. lower elevations anywhere from a quarter to perhaps three quarters of an inch of rain. but we still have more to come. and this is the strongest system headed our way tonight. 56, in hayward, right now it is 50 in fremont with 53 downtown and some low 50s to the north. so we talked about our wind advisory earlier. upper elevations right now still pretty gusty. anywhere from 25 to over 30 miles an hour. so the winds will certainly crank up from 10:00 tonight through early tomorrow. so the scattered showers today with cloudy skies and then tonight a much stronger storm.

the possibility of thunderstorms, gusty south winds. and then because of that tomorrow we are looking at the possibility of some flooding and those shallow roots with those soils very saturated, could see some tree limbs coming down. here's the timing. our high resolution model brings us a few showers throughout the early morning hours, and by the afternoon in the north bay, you'll be getting wet once again . so by two 3:00 we've got light showers, maybe some heavier rain to the north in santa rosa, but it's really not until after the dinner hour when we see that heavy rain really line up along the coast. here it is, 9:00, and these reds and oranges indicate that we could see some very heavy rain at times. so as we look at midnight tonight, notice that we've already picked up about an inch of rain from probably about 5:00 tonight to midnight, and the rest of us not doing too badly with just a quarter of an inch. maybe a half inch. oakland and san francisco.

but we add in what we get overnight, and there's where we could see anywhere from three quarters of an inch from today and tomorrow in hayward to over 2.5in down around ben loman, the santa cruz mountains. so still looking at the winter storm warning and the area around lake tahoe looking at some wet snow right now, temperatures are right below freezing, so expecting another 6 to 9in around kirkwood. highs today with those scattered lightrillionain showers. pretty mild around. 60 for you in half moon bay, 62 palo alto. and then we're waking up to more rain tomorrow. so the commute, most of the heavy rain will be behind us. but that level two coming into play tonight and then possibly some flooding into monday, we'll look at scattered light showers late tuesday into wednesday and then dry and warmer at but we need an atm from our bank unless you want to spend a small fortune in fees. uh, no, thank you. banking with us means more fee-free atms than the two largest us banks combined.

blasted their way through some large boulders which spilled onto the roadway right near auburn. both lanes were closed as they clean up those smaller pieces and assess the damage. road repairs are expected to continue through next week before they can reopen those lanes safely. this morning, we want to tell you how a section of the southern border is raising concerns among wildlife researchers, as abc seven news anchor dan ashley has this story. with the help of our partners at the local media association covering climate collaborative five miles of wall stretch going into the horizon, dividing the united states from mexico. >> but now there is growing evidence that newly constructed sections are also dividing a critical habitat, disrupting natural migrations. both of animals that eventually manage to work their way through the fence, and those too large to cross at all the border wall is creating a massive continental scale in environmental experiment that we're all along

for the ride with, and it's going to affect the evolutionary history of these species. emily burns is a researcher with the nonprofit sky island alliance. over the last several years, the group has been placing wildlife cameras along sections of the border wall in arizona to document its impact on any given night. smaller animals like these javelinas can slip through small openings at the base, perhaps followed by a lucky porcupine. but now watch as this black bear a species endangered in mexico, paces along the length of the wall, searching for an opening, while even an agile mountain lion is blocked as well. >> and they are a species that need a lot of space. mountain lions, especially the males. once they get old enough and leave their mother, they need to establish their own territory and they're just looking for simple things that that everybody looks for shelter, for food, mates and water. you know, that's what it's all about. >> and that extended range can be critical for long time survival. it's a lesson we've

certainly learned here in the bay area, where urban areas intersect with open space migration pathways that can often extend hundreds of miles. zara mcdonald is with the bay area puma project. her group tracks mountain lions and other animals with wildlife cameras. similar to those being used at the border. she worries about obstacles like freeways that can make it difficult for the animals to roam freely and mate, meaning that subpopulations themselves, you know, are more susceptible to disease, to inbreeding, and so genetic disorders. her group lobbies for land bridges or storm drain type tubes that can make crossing dangerous areas safer. finding those solutions, there are sections of freeways that lions are being killed on back in arizona, the sky island alliance is working on solutions for the border wall as well. >> it can be a no cost solution of just opening floodgates in the wall to allow storm water to drain. um, either way, across the border, those can be used by

yeah it is. we're looking at some light rain much of the day today will feature dry skies for many of you. and then heavier rain tonight with our level two system. the rain right now fairfield highway 80 and scattered showers for the rest of us. very light, but the pavement is wet and the national weather service has issued a flood watch for the north bay. 8:00 tonight until 10:00 tomorrow night. looking at the rain being quite heavy overnight. so that's why we have a level two system and the wind advisory from the north coast, san francisco peninsula, all the way down to big sur. and this takes us through early monday. so we'll get those scattered showers back in the north bay to 3:00. they'll be light. and then things are really going to turn around 7 to 8:00 for the entire bay area to get into some heavy rain. so 5060s and the scattered

county has filed a ballot initiative to take the issue to voters. this is the first time the public is getting to see a detailed plan on how this would all work. i've been following this story since the beginning. new renderings from california forever give a glimpse of what this new city, spanning 18,000 acres in eastern solano county, would look like. aerials of neighborhoods, safe, slow streets, a downtown plaza with transit, family friendly parks and open space, and walkable main streets. >> it will be smaller than vacaville, smaller than vallejo, and about two thirds the size of fairfield. ceo jan sramek explains. >> if passed by the voters, the new city expected to accommodate tens of thousands of people, promises 15,000 new jobs that pay at least 125% of the county average weekly wage. he says some of these jobs would be in advanced manufacturing, bring renewable energy and construction. the plan also commits to investing in green spaces, clean energy and protecting travis air force

blood waffle fries i say she'll be there. >> i think she'll be there. yeah that'll be fun. all right good morning everybody. here's a look at the rain. the wave of rain moving through. very light rain. it's been persistent but light nonetheless. we're going to switch that up tonight and get into some very heavy rain. gusty winds. the possibility of a thunderstorm. so here's a look at live doppler seven. and we go in closer to cordelia highway 80 where things are still a little soggy elsewhere. just some scattered light showers off the coast. here, the peninsula also around 580 livermore, and we get a break for a part of the morning hours before more rain moves back into the north bay. early this afternoon, 56 in hayward. it's 54 in oakland. good morning to you. um, the heaviest rainfall amounts were not only in the north bay, higher elevations, but the santa cruz mountains and mount diablo picked up an inch and a third of rain elsewhere, about a quarter to a half inch of rain totals. the winds are still breezy in the upper elevations. mount diablo 30 miles an hour and you

can see the rest of the bay area kind of breezy, but things are going to get quite gusty along the coastline later on today, so scattered showers, they'll be coming back into play first in the north bay by the middle of the afternoon, then the heavy rain for everyone tonight after about 8:00. chance of a thunderstorm, gusty winds. this is when we could get into some flooding throughout the overnight hours into early monday. some of the creeks and streams, but then the rain will be gone and we'll be looking at a couple of dry days before a weak system comes back on wednesday. here's a look at this morning. a few scattered light showers and then the rest of the morning. not really too bad, but by the afternoon, the rain coming back in the north bay, you can see it here by 3:00. some moderate rain up towards santa rosa, but it isn't until later in the evening hours that we see this heavy rain. and then this is all going to push onshore more throughout the overnight hours, so may even wake you up with the gusty winds. the heavy downpours. so through about midnight tonight we could pick up another two

inches around santa rosa, but the rest of us just about a 10th of an inch. so you're thinking not a big deal, right? well, it's that five six hour time period after midnight through about. 6:00 in the morning where we could pick up about a half inch to three quarters of an inch. the rest of the bay. so in the mountains right now, 29 degrees. so we are going back and forth from the warmer air to the colder air. still, looking at that winter weather advisory and the winter storm warning bringing anywhere from 2in to 10in of snow, and then as we look at your highs today, scattered showers out there, 62 in oakland. and then overnight tonight, the heavy rain tomorrow morning. still pockets of rainfall. but the heavy rain will be behind us for that morning commute. and the accuweather seven day forecast a level two system tonight, possibly some flooding tomorrow. with that wind and heavy rain and maybe a thunderstorm, and then late tuesday into wednesday, maybe a 10th to 2/10, a much lighter system. then we are sunny and warmer as we get
