celebration on the court. stanford tara vanderveer breaks a major record in the world of college basketball. abc seven news at five starts right now. >> building a better bay area moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc seven news. all the way. >> preparing for the worst with the heaviest rain of the storm series on the way. this system packs with it powerful winds and even some possible thunderstorms . that storm system just hours away. thanks for joining us, everybody. i'm dionne lim. we do have live team coverage for you of the approaching storm that is bringing us a third round of rain. it is expected to be the heaviest rain so far and has triggered a flood watch. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian starts us off and lets us know what to expect. spencer okay, diana, as you pointed out in this mostrillionecent round of storms, this one is expected to produce the heaviest rainfall you can see on live doppler seven. >> right now, most of the heavy activity is offshore, although some of it is pushing into the north bay right now, mainly into

sonoma county. it's expected to cover more of the bay area as we get later into the evening hours. as you can see on the satellite radar images, just round after round of wave of storms moving onshore. so on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale, this is a level two storm for late tonight and early tomorrow morning, producing moderate heavy rainfall, gusty wind. and there's a possibility of thunderstorms. here's the forecast animation starting at 6 p.m. notice as we go by every two hours or so, 6 to 8 p.m, 8 to 10 p.m. you can see the storm advancing onshore and moving beyond the north bay into the east bay, down onto the peninsula, and finally by midnight, covering all of the bay area. and it's going to be, of course, a rainy period for morning commuters tomorrow, as the storm will still be with us now, the wind advisory is in effect from 10:00 tonight to 4 a.m. tomorrow. so the heavy downpours will be accompanied by strong wind, and that'll make the morning commute even more difficult. full forecast. a little bit later dion. >> all right. watching that closely spencer. thanks. now all of this rain has people in the

north bay bracing for flooding and landslides. at least one home in sonoma county has been yellow tagged after a landslide in that area. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard. joins us live now in santa rosa. and cornell, you spoke with that homeowner there. >> i did dion and they say the landslide was scary and totally unexpected. as you can see, heavy rain now moving into sonoma county and firstrillionesponders are gearing up for what's next. >> anxious, scared, worried. you know, we've uh- we really like this house. sydney dawson is feeling all the emotions after this large landslide happened saturday. >> only feed from her hillside home in guerneville. >> i didn't think a thing about it. it sounded though like a clod and we didn't realize until a couple hours later it was like, oh my gosh, the slides right? starts at our living room and goes, i don't know how far, but pretty much down the river road firstrillionesponse ers say the slide is about 30ft wide and

six feet deep with mud. >> it prompted sonoma county inspectors to yellow tag cindy's home, which means limited entry at the property. and more rain is coming. we're just going to try to get enough out of here, enough clothes in case the house decides in case we go from. >> i like to say river view to river front. if the house decides to slide down the hill, we might end up with river front. suddenly that's a joke. >> a new storm is no joke to local firefighters. they're watching the russian river and its tributaries for possible flooding over the next few days. >> a lot of saturation going on right now. the river's maintaining russian river is maintaining. however, it will increase with more rain that we see. >> captain jones says his swiftwater rescue team is ready with watercraft and rope systems to bring victims to safety. if needed. >> our biggest concern right now are landslides, trees down, blocking roadways, potentially causing more vehicle accidents, new homeowners john and lisa

storm knocked loose a chunk of hillside that blocked part of canyon road. at el prado road. there are no reports of injury or vehicle damage, but the area has been closed off while the debris is cleared. meantime, a mudslide trouble spot in santa cruz county lived up to its messy reputation. today caltrans reported that earlier today, all lanes were blocked on highway nine at redwood gulch road in saratoga. they have since reopened. this is the same area where a mudslide shut down all lanes yesterday morning. a rain delay for bart service today. bart says they're running trains at slower speeds due to wet weather. the agency is cautioning riders about possible wet stairways and platforms, as well. you can get the latest train status updates on the bart app or at bart dot gov, and a reminder that you can track the forecast anytime with the very same live doppler seven that spencer uses. just search abc seven bay area in your devices app store to download it. now

well, moving on now. it is official ron desantis is suspending his presidential campaign. the republican governor from florida is endorsing donald trump. >> accordingly. i am today suspending my campaign. i'm so proud to have delivered on 100% of my promises, and i will not stop now, it's clear to me that a majority of republican primary voters want to give donald trump another chance. daysand says trump is, quote, superior to the current incumbent democratic president, joe biden. >> he also took a dig at republican presidential candidate nikki haley, who desantis said represented, quote, a repackaged form of warmed over corporatism. i don't take politics personally. >> i never have, and i think that's the problem with where we are now, is you now have people who want to decide who's a good republican, who's a bad republican, who's a good person, who's a bad person. that's why our country is so divided. >> and the trump campaign reacted by saying he was honored with the endorsement from desantis. california governor

gavin newsom, who has been an arch nemesis of desantis, also reacted with a tweet reading, quote, fire sale on all ron desantis merch today. oakland is losing its in-n-out burger and the restaurant is blaming crime in and outs chief operating officer tells abc seven that customers and associates of the oakport street location are regularly victimized by car break-ins property damage, theft and armed robberies. he says the store is still profitable, but safety is their top priority. employees will be transferred to nearby locations or receive a severance package. the store's last day of business will be sunday, march 24th. now not far from the in-n-out. the search is underway for an atm stolen from a bank in oakland this morning. the thieves left behind quite a bit of damage. it all happened at a bank of america branch on hegenberger road near the oakland airport. police say thieves used a van and chains to tear the machine out of the

ground. in the drive through area, the san mateo county authorities are investigating a shooting at an apartment complex just south of half moon bay. that shooting happened at about seven last night at the moon ridge apartments, a farm worker housing development in an unincorporated area of the county. investigators say the victim was shot multiple times, but was conscious and alert as he was taken to the hospital. well, that incident as half moon bay remembers the victims of a deadly mass shooting last year. a public memorial is underway as we speak. tuesday will mark one year since the attack at two locations in the city. investigators say a farm laborer shot five people at a mushroom farm where he worked, killing four. he then fatally shot three more people at a farm about two miles away before this incident, many of the farm workers kept quiet for a lot of things, but why not? >> right now? we are very interested in working with the with the sheriff's department and to uh- to have them do

outreach, to reach out to the farms and have the community to feel safe, to report any crimes that happens, you know, towards them. farm workers have been victims of crimes. you know, for many decades that have not been reported. >> tonight's memorial is taking place at the boys and girls club in half moon bay. it will be followed by a candlelit procession to mark dutra plaza. then a moment of silence for the victims. the family of alexis, gabe is inviting people to spread kindness on the second anniversary of her disappearance . gabe was the only woman who vanished on january 26th of 2022. police say she was killed by her ex-boyfriend. gabe's family is honoring her memory by declaring january 26th kindness day. they're asking people to do something kind for another person, such as open a door for a stranger or donate to a charity, and then share that experience with them. coming up next on abc seven news system-wide strike, thousands of csu faculty members are expected to walk off the job this week.

time line just ahead. new details now on a story we first told you about in september. a pod housing complex built above san francisco's mint plaza is still housing residents despite it being cited by the department of building inspection in october. that's according to our media partners at the san francisco standard. the development is managed by brownstone shared housing, which has not responded to requests for comment. dbi hit the company with permit violations because of an illegal change from office to residential housing, along with violations when a shower was installed in a bathroom. a hearing over the matter is scheduled for february 6th. happening tomorrow. thousands of staff members at california state university campuses will begin a week long strike. this could impact as many as 400,000 students statewide. the union representing 28,000 workers, is demanding a 12% salary increase and extended parental leave. san jose state, san francisco state and cal state, east bay will all

snowpack is creeping upwards. now roads in tahoe are wet as you can see, these caltrans cameras show that the recent snow isn't causing any major issues or chain reaction. that is the good news for now. the winter driving conditions, though in the sierra can change rapidly, similar to what we're experiencing with the precipitate. spencer. that's true, that's true. >> you know, this is a relatively warm storm. so this is heavy, wet snow. it's not that cold snow that kind of closes the roadways. not yet here in the bay area. diana, we have rain right now and it's becoming fairly widespread across the north bay. and you can see in those darker colors there of orange and yellow, we've got some heavy downpours developing up in sonoma county, moving down toward marin county right now. and the heaviest rain is right around santa rosa and then down southward down towards sonoma and cirrus point. but there's going to be heavy rain in other locations later in the evening as well. so as we look at the satellite and radar looping image, you can see band after band of showers and steady rain moving onshore and by later tonight we'll have rainfall

reaching all points of the bay area. it's a bit breezy in some spots and not very gusty yet, although down in half moon bay we've got gusts up to about 22mph. they will get stronger in some locations later tonight and i mentioned this as a relatively warm storm. looking at the 24 hour temperature change, you can see that it's about 3 to 6 degrees warmer across most of the bay area than at this time last night, looking out over san francisco from sutro tower, we see at 60 degrees right now in the city. oakland 59 low 60s at hayward, san jose and san mateo, 57 at half moon bay. other temperature readings. now, as we look at dark skies over the bay and over the golden gate, mid 50s at santa rosa, petaluma and napa, 60 at fairfield and 63 at concord. and these are our forecast headlines. late night storm is developing right now. rain will be heavy at times, especially during the overnight hours. expect a messy morning commute with rain, gusty conditions, even a slight chance of a thunderstorm, and through midweek we expect dry conditions on tuesday, but more rain moving in on wednesday. now this storm on the exclusive abc seven storm

impact scale is a level two storm for late tonight and tomorrow morning. moderate to heavy rainfall, gusty wind and again a slight chance of thunder . looking at the forecast animation, you can see between now between 6 p.m. actually and about 730. we'll see more areas getting these heavy downpours reaching down south of the golden gate, over to the east bay onto the peninsula and down to the south bay. by late tonight, midnight. we still have wide coverage across the bay area on this from this storm by 5:00 tomorrow morning as morning commute gets underway. looks like the rain will be easing up in the north bay, but it will be pretty heavy in other parts of the bay area. rainfall totals by 4:00 tomorrow afternoon will range from about a third of an inch down to the south bay to nearly an inch in san francisco and oakland, and well over an inch in most locations across the north bay. along with the rain, we have a wind advisory in effect from 10:00 tonight to 4 a.m. tomorrow, mainly along the coastline and certainly over the mountain ranges. winds will be out of the south, gusting to about 45mph, and a coastal flood advisory in effect until 11 a.m.
