. and then there were two i can't ask our supporters to volunteer their time and donate their resources. >> if we don't have a clear path to victory. >> florida governor ron desantis, once thought to have the best chance of supplanting donald trump as leader of the gop, now suspending his presidential campaign and endorsing trump. just days before the new hampshire primary . >> well, i've had disagreements with donald trump, such as on the coronavirus pandemic and his elevation of anthony fauci. trump is superior to the current incumbent, joe biden. >> trump has spent much of his campaign on slamming desantis. >> the problem with ron desanctimonious is that he needs a personality transfer. >> reporter but after desantis suspend his campaign, a friendlier tone from trump. >> i'd like to take time to congratulate ron desantis and, of course, a really terrific person. >> now, the only person standing

between trump and the republican nomination is former ambassador nikki haley. but haley is facing a double digit deficit heading into tomorrow's primary, with 50% of likely republican primary voters supporting trump. haley at just 39, according to a cnn university of new hampshire poll. haley says even if she loses tomorrow, she's not quitting. >> we're going home to south carolina. we're going to crisscross the state that i love so much. so we're not we're not backing out any time soon. >> haley is questioning if trump is mentally fit to serve after the former president appeared to confuse her with former house speaker nancy pelosi when recently discussing the january six riot at the capitol. >> when you're dealing with the pressures of a presidency, we can't have someone else that we question whether they're mentally fit to do this today, haley is set to hold multiple rallies in new hampshire, while trump will be in new york. >> he could testify as early as

today in the defamation case brought by writer e jean carroll. if he does take the stand at the trial, his testimony will be restricted based on the judge's pretrial rulings. now trump is expected back here in new hampshire tonight and on top of. ron desantis endorsed. he was also endorsed by senator tim scott. that's actually tim scott from south carolina, who nikki haley appointed to thatrillionole. meantime, nikki haley also picking up an endorsement by former presidential candidate and former arkansas governor asa hutchinson. derek, abc's melissa. >> don. melissa. thanks governor ron desantis is facing criticism for the winston churchill quote he used when posting that video suspending his campaign. desantis quoted churchill as saying, success is not final. failure is not fatal. it is the courage to continue that counts. but experts say there's no record of churchill saying those words. >> a dangerous ice storm is impacting the morning commute for millions of americans. half

an inch of ice could coat everything this morning, from oklahoma to arkansas all the way to chicago. crews have been racing to restore electricity and water in parts of tennessee and alabama. people in memphis could be boiling their water until thursday due to pipes bursting in the frigid weather. slippery road conditions caused this truck here to lose control in pennsylvania, the winter conditions this month are now blamed for at least 72 deaths nationwide. we will check your forecast coming up in just a few minutes. >> weeks after a door plug fell off, an alaska airlines plane mid-flight, the faa is now recommending visual inspections of another boeing model. officials now want operators of the 737 900 air to make sure the door plugs are properly secured because they have the same door plug design as the max nine. on the recommendation applies to nearly 400 planes flown by alaska, delta and united airlines. the airlines say they've already begun the inspections. >> the pentagon says a number of

u.s. service members were injured after a base in iraq came under attack. a militia backed by iran has claimed responsibility for the missile attack. several americans are being evaluated now for traumatic brain injuries. 140 similar attacks have been reported in recent months. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is vowing to continue the war against hamas on all fronts. hamas says 25,000 people have now been killed in gaza. abc's matt gutman traveled with israeli forces inspecting hamas tunnels under gaza. >> see how well manufactured it is. concrete arches above concrete. on the side, you can see a pillow, mattress, bathroom. on the other end. um they say they found articles of women's clothing and dna that they've matched two hostages as the israelis say, at least 20 hostages were held in that tunnel now to football. >> and the drama in detroit and buffalo fans on the edge of

former investigator tells good morning america the case still keeps him up at night. he believes the evidence should be reassessed. >> i don't have a an agenda or an opinion on his guilt or his innocence. this is for me. it's a fire investigation. >> you may remember suspicion was raised against peterson after his girlfriend revealed their affair. you can hear more from that fire investigator coming up on good morning america. >> we turn now to a new study on kids and sports. more young kids are quitting sports and researchers are finding out why. here's abc's alison kosik this morning. >> the american academy of pediatrics has issued a new warning about youth sports, saying, too much pressure on kids performance is leading to overtraining, injuries and burnout. nice, alex. in recent years, experts have raised more concerns about parents taking the fun away when there's such an overload on winning it really

takes away the enjoyment. reporter the new study, released overnight, finds a whopping 70% of kids are dropping out of organized youth sports by age 13. factors include depression, fatigue, sleep problems and injuries as injuries in youth football took the spotlight in california this month. as lawmakers considered banning tackle football for kids under 12. super bowl champ rob gronkowski supported the proposal. >> i love that these kids want to play the game of football, but the play the game of football such a young age, i think is a little dangerous. >> but california governor gavin newsom killing the proposal, pledging not to sign it, saying i am deeply concerned about the health and safety of our young athletes. but an outright ban is not the answer, arguing whether kids play should be up to parents. in the end, the american academy of pediatrics recommends young athletes should take part in no more than one
