we are monitoring a level two storm on our storm impact scale this morning. we've already seen reports of flooding across the bay area. drew is checking the forecast while swease is monitoring road conditions.

>> and then there were two ron desantis drops out of the presidential race, leaving only former president trump and nikki haley on the republican side. >> then to eat or not to eat the celeb causing a stir by eating snow. but is it healthy? you know, watch out because there could be surprises. >> you know what i'm saying? totally the same thing that happens on grass also happens on snow. it's monday, january 22nd. >> we're going to check our forecast with drew. hello, hello. good morning. >> we got soaked overnight. and that's on top of a really wet weekend. so we are seeing issues when it comes to standing water on roadways. we also had some gusty winds that brought some trees down. so live doppler seven over the six hour period showing you those rounds of heavy rain. currently the heaviestrillionain is falling in the south bay, but we're watching some more isolated showers developing off the coast that will move into the north bay over the next 90 minutes. here's a closer look at the south bay. those showers moving through sunnyvale. milpitas into the eastern foothills. so it is a damp morning, but we are seeing problems persist after a really wet weekend. we have

flood warnings and flood advisories posted for areas in teal and green, meaning we are seeing standing water on roadways. our smaller streams and creeks are overflowing their banks, so it's going to take some time for this water to recede. we'll keep it at a level two for the next hour. that heavy rain is exiting, but again, problems persist. that means a slower morning commute this morning. looking at the morning commute, we have those showers in the forecast in the next 90 minutes. then we'll start to dry out. but another storm is on the way. we'll talk about that coming up in six minutes. let's say hi to sue. good morning. >> and wet roads. of course, the big issue for your drive as well this morning we've got the hydroplaning standing water. we've got 47 incidents on the chp log. most of those solo spinouts, folks ending up wrong way in the center divider in the middle of lanes. so extra caution needed. yes, the metering lights have been turned on at the bay bridge. you can see the wetness on the camera and the roads, so give yourself a little extra time and we pop over to walnut creek. taillights headed towards highway 24 south, bound on 680. those headlights

headed northbound, and it's moving at the limit. you've got about an eight minute drive from concord and southbound into walnut creek, and slowing over the altamont. as you see this morning. also, you can see the bay bridge is slow and your east shore commute. >> thank you. sue. the north bay has been hit pretty hard by the rain overnight, leaving fallen trees and other problems behind. this new video shows police block a section of highway 116 in forestville overnight because of flooding. this is near tourist drive. we're told a car in the water had to be towed away, but that's not the only place that's having flooding issues. abc seven news reporter lena howland and santa rosa headed to guerneville, where neighbors say the red cross has set up lena. >> come on. see? that's right. we have learned that the red cross has set up a response team in the safeway parking lot in guerneville. that's in response to some of the flooding that guerneville was experiencing overnight, which is where we are headed to right now. take a look

at this video showing flooding happening right next to people's homes around 1:00 this morning. the sonoma county sheriff and members of the sonoma county fire department had to go door to door to alert people that five creek had breached its banks and was flooding this small community north of downtown. people were told to prepare to evacuate. we saw flooding just north of fifth street between mill street and sycamore court, as well as the north end of church street. you can see the water coming up high enough to cover up the tires on some cars, and you can also see it filling the front yards of certain homes that look, i mean, look at my pants. >> i know it's up to my knees. i just talked to the policeman that was sitting on the corner, and he said in less than 20 minutes, 30 to 20 minutes, it flooded because an hour and a half ago, i looked out my door and it wasn't even. it my yard wasn't even that flooded. now it's up to my top. my

worker housing development just south of half moon bay. one person was sent to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. we don't yet know the extent of that person's injuries. the most recent incident is a painful reminder of the violence inflicted this time last year over the weekend, community members and local leaders came together to honor those killed. the shooting exposed poor living conditions, a lack of mental health services and unfair pay for farm workers. problems that are still being dealt with today. it is our job not only to mourn with these families for this tragic loss, but it is our job to work towards trying to resolve some of these circumstances and issues that led to this horrible event that we are seeing. the beginning of a solution earlier this month, san mateo county signed off on a 50 acre lot that's going to be turned into farm worker housing and a co-op. >> developing news three major airlines are in the middle of new inspections on another

boeing model. it comes after the faa's recommendation to look at the 737 900 er. that plane has the same door plug design as the 737 max nine. so that was the aircraft that had its door plug blown out mid-air air just a few weeks back. alaska, delta and united all say they have started those inspections. sources tell abc news this will impact 380 aircraft around the world. >> your voice, your vote. florida governor ron desantis has dropped out of the presidential race and is now supporting former president trump. desantis was once thought to have the best chance of beating trump. now the only person standing between trump and the republican nomination is former un ambassador nikki haley . she is facing a double digit deficit heading into tomorrow's primary in new hampshire. a new poll finds 50% of likely republican primary voters support trump. haley has just 39% support. haley says even if she loses tomorrow, she's not quitting. we're going home to

south carolina. >> we're going to crisscross the state that i love so much. so we're not we're not backing out any time soon. >> today, haley is expected to hold multiple rallies across new hampshire to. while the bay area is dealing with rain, bitter cold continues to impact much of the country. the cold weather is being blamed for at least 67 deaths across several southern and midwestern states. many of them caused by hypothermia. the widespread deep freeze is creating a nightmare on the roads. >> there's a lot of work. i thought that the trucks and all that was going to be shoveling all night, all night, and it was going to give me some light work this morning. but no, the snow one, the temperatures in the deep south have left several communities with inoperable water pipes. >> a boil water order remains in effect in memphis. crews there continue to work around the clock as 700,000 customers wait to have their water restored and take a look at this. >> this is from the uc berkeley central sierra snow lab.

researchers here say they've gotten almost eight inches of snow over the weekend, and there's more on the way. slowly california's snowpack is replenishing. as of saturday, snow levels are measuring at 55% of normal drive hours in the sierra have been tested in this latest round of snowfall. >> this was saturday night on i-80 near donner. the chp office in truckee posted this video showing a cruiser towing a second cruiser that got stuck in the snow. right now, chain controls are in effect for i-80 going east at applegate. >> coming up, the record setting stanford women's basketball coach opening up about becoming the all time winningest coach in history and the search for survivors after dozens are buried in a large mudslide in china. >> 609 this morning, we have numerous storm reports thanks to heavy rain, some gusty winds overnight tonight. this morning around quarter madera we have standing water across all four lanes of highway 101 northbound and take a look at sunol. we have flooding issues and some

heavier pockets in the south bay . some isolated showers about to move into the north bay. today is just one of those days where it's cloudy. we still have the chance of an isolated shower throughout the late morning and early afternoon along the coast. we'll go into the upper 50s around the bay shoreline. we will see a bit of a pause in a lot of the wet weather later on this morning, then into the afternoon. there's the chance of an isolated shower popping up once again. we'll go into the low 60s for daytime highs, and then inland is a similar story. we'll find another chance of

snow, freezing temperatures and it's expected to last for the rest of the week. now to the race for the california u.s. senate today. democratic representatives adam schiff, katie porter and barbara lee, along with republican steve garvey, are set to participate in a televised debate, politico reports. all four candidates qualified based on polling results from mid-december. today's debate comes just days before voters start to get their ballots in the mail. the top 2nd march finishers, regardless of political party, will advance to the november runoff. a monumental win over the weekend for stanford cardinal women's basketball head coach tara vanderveer. tara broke the record for most wins in in college basketball history with

1203. van. der veer surpassed previous record holder duke duke's mike krzyzewski. she started her career with stops at idaho and ohio state before joining stanford in 1985. the team is now 17 and two and plays arizona state. friday vanderveer spoke with gma's robin roberts. so what was going through your mind, tara? >> you know, i mean, robin, it's just a little bit surreal to be honest with you. um, you know, you just take each game one at a time. and i've loved coaching and, um, you know, this was a really tough game. oregon state is a great team. and uh, we had some players really step up. kiki often had 36 points. it was an awesome game. and, um, i was just really happy for our fans that we could do it at home. um, um, we had, you know, it was a full house and it was a great celebration. it was really amazing. >> i've been to many congratulations. >> you can watch robin's full interview with coach vanderveer

where she talks about this historic feat coming up right here at 7 a.m. on abc seven. the 40 niners will play the lions for a chance to go to the super bowl. >> detroit won their game yesterday against tampa bay, a day after the 40 niners survived an advance against the packers. the 40 niners are still unclear on the status of deebo samuel, who suffered a shoulder injury on saturday night. sources tell espn that samuel is, quote, okay . coach kyle shanahan compared the injury to one samuel suffered earlier this season, which caused him to miss some time. the 40 niners know they'll have to play better this week if they want to move on. >> you don't take it for granted. you know how hard it is and you know how much it means to these guys here that you know, have gone through that. so like, i get emotional thinking about it like we're back here. it's time to take care of business. >> this is the one we got to get. you know, obviously i'm not getting any younger, so i definitely want to want to get to the top of the mountain. so we definitely need this game.

overnight and that was just on top of a really wet weekend. so we do have issues when it comes to standing water. we have numerous flood warnings and flood advisories. in effect, those areas shaded in teal and green because we are actively seeing standing water on our roads. even our smaller streams and creeks came over their banks. so it will take some time for this water to recede. and that's just leading to a slower morning commute. when it comes to that standing water. and also there are some shallow landslides and trees down. it's just been a pretty active morning. temperatures right now were in the mid 50s. here's a future weather after 7 a.m. the heaviestrillionain is out, but for the rest of the day into the afternoon, we still have the chance of an isolated shower popping up. if one does pop up, it will be very light in nature and very isolated. so it's a mostly cloudy day. those temperatures in the low and mid 60s. i would take the umbrella with you out the door. you may need it this afternoon. tonight we get rid of the showers. the cloud cover stays with us and we may have some areas of dense fog developing. now future weather. tomorrow's bright and beautiful. we get a dry day before our next storm system arrives here wednesday morning. this is a

level one, but after this storm wednesday morning, we enter a very dry pattern that enters into the upcoming weekend as well. speaking of the weekend, it's a much different forecast for the niners this upcoming sunday. look at this a kickoff temperature near 70 degrees under dry skies and a lot of sunshine. by the fourth quarter, we're down to about 60 degrees. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. the next seven days for you. morning rain is exiting as we speak. it's partly cloudy tomorrow. there's those morning showers on wednesday and then a dry pattern sets up here by the end of the week and into the upcoming weekend. brighter skies and warmer temperatures 47 chp incidents on the log at this hour. >> standing water, hydro planning. those are all the issues that you're facing, and most of those accidents are solo spinouts ending up in the center divide and ending up blocking lanes. wrong way, you name it. so extra time, extra distance is the mantra we wet and rainy across the golden gate bridge. four lanes in the southbound. the caution light there on the bridge says slow down, and i couldn't say it any better

tighter, showing you those pockets of downpours that are moving through this morning. here's a live look. this is san jose showing you that rain on the lens this morning. and for a lot of us that standing water is leading to a slower morning commute. we have flood warnings and advisories posted for the area shaded in green parts of the north bay, the santa cruz mountains, parts of the south bay. because we do find areas of standing water, even our smaller streams and creeks have overflowed their banks. but the good news we're only at a level two, a moderate storm for the next 30 minutes. the heavy rain is exiting, but the problems do persist over the next couple of hours. when it comes to flooded roads and some trees down. so here's how the day shapes up. it's really cloudy out there today. the heavy rain is exiting, but still into the afternoon with the isolated chance of a light shower. but another storm system is on the way. we'll talk about that in nine minutes, but let's check in with sue and see how thatrillionainy morning commute is doing. >> yeah, a lot of incident. we've got 57 on the chp board, and we're going to go back to highway 87. the circle there shows some flooding in the right lanes as you head northbound.

it's just now clearing out. we saw quite a bit of traffic within the last five minutes. so that's the story this morning. standing water, hydroplaning, puddling and pooling. flooding where you would least expect it so and where you would expect it. as a matter of fact, san mateo bridge moving sluggishly with brake lights across the causeway with about a 17 minute drive from 8-80 over towards 101. and we've got had a few minor problems on the altamont pass. those have been cleared out of lanes. you can see the commute is over an hour from tracy, up and over the altamont. things pick up in livermore. otherwise the green is good. metering lights are on at the bay bridge. you can see the red there. that happened at about 535 this morning and very slow with flooding on 84, as well as southbound 680 leaving pleasanton for sunol. >> thank you. sue. the heavy rain is leaving some in the north bay partially underwater. people living along the russian river in guerneville are dealing

with flooding this morning. the water coming up to their knees and now the red cross is responding. we're going to check in with abc seven news reporter lena howland. she is in the santa rosa area. lena >> hey, richie. that's right. we are in the santa rosa area driving northbound on 101, where we are really only seeing a few light sprinkles at this hour, not causing too many issues on the roadway, but but that rain was a much different story. a little bit further up the road in guerneville. here's a look at some of the flooding up in guerneville, which for reference is about 20 miles northwest of santa rosa. this video was taken right around 230. this morning. you can see the water rushing by right in front of people's homes, and you can also see it filling the front yards of certain homes as well. that's why around 1:00 this morning, the sonoma sheriff and members of the sonoma county fire department had to go door to door to alert people that fife creek had breached its banks and was flooding the small community north of downtown. residents

morning. for now, reporting live in santa rosa, lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you lena, people in guerneville have been dealing with issues all weekend, including a landslide. abc news spoke with cindy dawson and she says she's feeling anxious, scared and worried after that ground gave way just feet from her hillside home on saturday. the landslide prompted sonoma county inspectors to yellow tag her home. that means limited entry at the property. firstrillionesponders say the slide is about 30ft wide, six feet deep with mud doors. anne says she and her husband are leaving their house until it's safe to go back. >> got our rv out of storage and we'll be staying in an rv park until we figure out what to do in case we go from. i like to say river view to river front. if the house decides to slide down the hill, we might end up with river front. suddenly that's a joke. >> she says she's working with the county and keeping her fingers crossed that the hillside around her home stays

stable. during this next round of rain on the peninsula, the rain was coming down earlier in san mateo county. >> you can see this rain in downtown san carlos around two this morning. no word of any flooding in that area, but we do know there's at least one tree down in the city of san mateo. and look at this parking lots flooded and sidewalks covered. this morning, just northwest of the boardwalk in santa cruz, people there say there's at least 2 to 3ft of standing water in the nearby lagoon neighborhood. it's unclear right now if any homes are impacted by that water, but it certainly is a lot of it. >> you can track the forecast anytime with the same live doppler seven that drew uses just search abc seven bay area in your device's app store to download it. now >> in-n-out burger says it is finished with its oakland restaurant, and the company says crime in the bay area is to blame. the oak port street restaurant is located in a strip mall off interstate 80 at the hegenberger drive exit. it's the only in-n-out in oakland, and this location opened 18 years ago. the company said business

was good and profitable, but the safety of its customers and employees was in jeopardy. in-n-out sent us a letter explaining the decision, saying there are regular car break ins, property damage, theft, even armed robberies. the last day of business will be sunday, march 24th. abc seven news anchor dion lim spoke with a longtime customer of the in-n-out, who says in recent years he's had to take precautions. >> yeah, i would do like i think a lot of other people are starting to do. just leave your windows down, you know, like the at least you won't walk away with a broken window. >> last march, raising cane's, which has a restaurant in that same strip mall, switched to drive thru only because of the car break ins in the parking lot. in that letter from in-n-out's chief operating officer, he writes our top priority must be the safety and well-being of our customers and associates. we cannot ask them to visit or work in an unsafe environment. >> less than a mile down the road from that in-n-out, an atm was stolen from the bank of

america branch on hegenberger road. police say thieves used a van and chains to tear the machine out of the ground yesterday morning. the atm was later recovered in oakland and a person was arrested. >> today, thousands of staff members at california state university campuses will start a week long strike. this could impact as many as 400,000 students statewide. the union, representing 28,000 workers, is demanding a 12% salary increase and extended parental leave. san jose state, san francisco state and cal state east bay will be impacted. chancellor mildred garcia is urging students to still show up to class despite the strike. >> it's been just over a year since san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins assumed office. >> abc seven news anchor stephanie sierra spoke with her about the city's recidivism rate and what's been done, and also the work ahead. i would say when i took over, it was at its height. >> people did not believe there was any accountability. they were being released immediately after their arrest. and so the

courthouse was a revolving door. and in many ways, despite my office fighting against that, it still is for certain types of crime. that's why i've been so vocal about the judge's impact when it comes to us asking to detain certain drug dealers while their cases are open. we are still seeing that it's taking 3 or 4 arrests for that to happen, and that shouldn't be the case. >> jenkins did add that the da's offices continue doing to make progress. she also adds that they're working with other agencies, but that there is a long way to go. >> new details on a story we first told you about in september. a pod housing complex built above san francisco's mint plaza is still housing residents , despite being cited by the city last year, according to our media partners at the san francisco standard. the development is managed by brownstone shared housing, which has not responded to the standard's request for comment. the city hit the company with permit violations because of an illegal change from office to residential housing. a hearing

over that issue is scheduled february 6th in the south bay. >> the mayor of san jose is calling for a new city policy to prevent encampments from returning to downtown. >> public spaces. last fall, the city used $2 million to move unhoused people from the guadalupe river trail into interim housing. since then, some camps have returned. mayor matt mehan wants to create no return zones and limit where those encampments can be. >> if you were here prior to that cleanup effort, you can see why people stopped using the trail. this is a public trail here along the river that should be accessible to everyone. >> some advocates for the unhoused are pushing back, calling the proposal cruel. the city council rules committee will take up this issue on wednesday. >> still to come, mortgage rates are set to dip again. what this means for those of you trying to buy a house and you're looking live at the big board at the new york stock exchange up right now

quinn. huskins was kidnaped from quinn's home on mare island, and he was tied up. she turned up two days later in southern california after being held captive and sexually assaulted. vallejo police accused the couple of staging the whole thing. months later, evidence found during a different case proved that their story was true. huskins and quinn eventually sued vallejo police for excuse me defamation and settled out of court. the couple is now married with two kids in a new warning about youth sports, too much pressure on performance is leading to overtraining, injuries and burnout. >> this is all according to a new study by the american academy of pediatrics. researchers say 70% of kids are dropping out of sports by age 13. this is coming as youth tackle football was in the spotlight this month as california lawmakers considered a ban on the sport for kids under the age of 12. experts say the focus in youth sports should

not be on wins and losses. >> parents can do a lot to support young people. it doesn't matter if they win or lose, it's that they're building their character and they're taking care of their bodies. >> the study recommends young athletes should not participate in more than two sports a day, and have 2 to 3 months off from each sport every year. >> the wet weather recently was not enough to stop people on both sides of the abortion issue from gathering on the streets of san francisco, anti abortion rights activists descended on the city for the 20th annual walk for life on saturday. the march closed down market street for much of the day. busses filled with participants came from hundreds of miles away. we wanted to come and show our support and show the world that, um, abortion is it's murder makes your heart feel good to stand up and show that you are proud to be pro-life, pro-abortion rights groups held a counter demonstration near the

main library. protests there called for reproductive justice in the wake of the overturning of roe v wade. >> i think that after roe was turned like so many people don't have access to abortion. and even though we might feel safe in this city, we might feel safe in this state. i think it's really important that we show up, especially when there's such a big force across the street. >> the supreme court has two upcoming cases on abortion. >> sarah ferguson, the duchess of york, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of skin cancer, a spokesperson for the duchess says it's a malignant melanoma and that is a form of skin cancer that can spread through the body quickly and become potentially deadly. ferguson was previously diagnosed with breast cancer last year, the duchess posted on instagram overnight, saying she's thankful to her medical teams that have supported her throughout her journey. she's now home and resting and recuperating with family. now it's your morning money report, mortgage rates are expected to
