7:11 am
basically, george, one big factor. he never took the fight to donald trump until he was already mortally wounded. >> nikki haley has been edging towards taking the fight to donald trump. two-person race right now. she's behind in new hampshire. even if she wins, tough path going forward. >> new hampshire voters will go to the polls tomorrow knowing it is a one on one race. knowing that if nikki haley loses, donald trump is all but certain to be the republican nominee and that all that would stand between donald trump getting back into the white house is an 81-year-old joe biden. new hampshire voters will know that. polls suggest, even despite that, trump has a lead. but we will see. >> you mention joe biden but also a series of court cases. he will be in the courtroom today. out on the campaign trail we played that clip on friday night he's been showing more and more confusion in his stump speeches. >> george, that moment which, by the way, the biden campaign has already cut into an ad, is really something. donald trump is truly confused about who nikki haley is.
7:12 am
this somehow she was in charge of security at the capitol on january 6th. clearly confusing her with nancy pelosi. but we've seen him confuse joe biden with barack obama. he thinks he beat obama. we saw at one point he talked about how biden was going to get us into world war ii. there have been moments and there have been several moments on the campaign trail where he has seemed quite frankly out of it. >> we should underscore he's confusing nikki haley for nancy pelosi as he's telling a lie about nancy pelosi. >> of course, nancy pelosi was speaker of the house. she was not in charge of security though at the capitol. he says he offered her troops which again is not true. but regardless, not just the lie, he's confused about who nikki haley is. the person he's running against. you can see it in that clip that we played just part of. he says nikki haley, nikki haley. like he's looking to find it in his brain somewhere. >> jon karl, thank you very much.
7:13 am
>> let me ask you something. i was taken by your instagram post. this is very familiar territory to you. >> i first worked the new hampshire primary back in 1988 and covered every single primary since the 2000 campaign. this is a very different new hampshire primary this time around. usually you have a gaggle full of candidates on both sides. competitive primaries on both sides. you really don't this time around. by wednesday morning we very well could see the general election face-off, donald trump versus joe biden. >> exactly. that's something. thank you both, gentlemen. we're going to turn to the latest attack on u.s. forces in the middle east by iran backed militants. according to the pentagon, several american personnel are being evaluated for possible traumatic brain injuries after a missile barrage against a base in iraq. our chief white house correspondent mary bruce is tracking that for us. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, robin.
7:14 am
well, this is exactly the kind of escalation strikes by iran backed militants that the white house has been trying to avoid. a barrage of rockets targeting u.s. forces in iraq. the pentagon says this attack was largely intercepted by air defense systems but this morning we know several u.s. service members are now being evaluated for possible traumatic brain injuries. at least one iraqi service member was wounded. this is perhaps the largest of the roughly 140 attacks on u.s. service members in iraq and syria since mid october. these relentless attacks that iran backed claim are in protest for u.s. support of israel and their war with hamas. all of this is increasing a volatile situation. we have seen this tit for tat of attacks and counter attacks that risk spiralling into a wider war. the biden administration is trying to contain this while also fighting back to protect u.s. forces in the region and to protect the vital shipping routes that continue to come under attack by houthi rebels in yemen.

a flock of powerful women he surrounded himself with. [ laughter ] we enjoyed talking to you during the break about this. this series is brilliant. it has a little bit of everything. of course it has glamour, drama, betrayal and the cast. how much fun was it? >> the cast was incredible. it just got better every day. ryan would call and say, we've got this person, that person. we just couldn't believe it. lot of iconic women playing iconic women. of course, the incredible tom hollander, who just crushes this part. i know he's uncomfortable every time i say that. [ laughter ] sorry, tom. >> you're very kind. >> i want to ask you, tom, just to make you more uncomfortable. ask you about playing truman. so many of us just fall in love with your character in white lotus. truman surrounded himself with
8:32 am
these glamorous women, swans. quinton also liked to surround himself with women, glamorous and over the top. >> yes. >> do you think quinton and truman would have gotten along? >> probably, yeah. i think they would have gotten along. i think quinton would have liked to have truman in his house as a house guest and show him off. and then be slightly embarrassed when truman, yeah, overdid it or disgraced himself. [ laughter ] they're very -- quinton is all privilege and truman was all struggle. truman came from a tough tough horrible childhood and quinton is just a rich kid inheriting a whole lot of stuff, doing exactly what he wants in a different period when it was much easier. >> two great guys, right, to take >> great parts, yeah. wonderful parts. >> you play meg bailey.
8:33 am
another great part. she was the epitome of elegance. she is married to the cbs chairman william bailey. what intrigued you about her character? >> that she was this incredibly, like, almost like a piece of performance art. she has presentation, her grace, her dignity. never a hair out of place, a wrong word said. everything was just, she was so well groomed. but there are cracks, right? that's what you're looking for as an actor. is to, yes, take on this level of perfection, but clearly that took a lot. >> at what cost, right? >> at what cost, yeah. and when you get to play a character in long form like that, you can really examine all of those vulnerabilities and cracks, yeah. >> you both have whetted our appetites. let's take a look. >> i found out bill was still having his grotesque little
8:34 am
affair with happy rockefeller. >> he was still? >> in our home. >> go back. we're talking the governor's wildebeest wife? i thought that was a one time. >> so did i. but he just wanted to keep the governor's wife. he gets a kick out of it. this is what is so humiliating. >> oh my gosh. [ laughter ] >> love it. capote's voice. the way you were able to channel this and master it. what was that process like? >> that process was guided by a very brilliant man called jerome butler, who is an amazing voice coach. whose name we know well. he is a dear dear man and a brilliant man. the short answer is, listen to
8:35 am
it and copy it and, like a parrot, and then eventually it becomes in the muscles of your mouth a bit and then you stop being like a parrot and start being like a human being. just listening. >> you would listen right before takes? >> i would, yeah, yeah. jerome breaks down the vowel sounds and goes no, no, no. that was over many weeks. >> wow. >> you would walk around with a tape recorder on your phone. you get to the point you're just improvising. >> yeah. yeah. weirdly. yeah, yeah. hasn't happened before. i loved the character. so i wanted to -- i felt like i could get it. some voices i just can't get. i could get that one. so, yeah. >> we all want to see it.
8:36 am
before we go, treat williams passed away while you were filming. what a talent he was. >> yes. what a sweet man. and very very -- it seemed impossibly cruel and unfair that he should just die in a random accident like that. we just all got to know him very well. naomi much closer to him than me. >> other than tom, most of my scenes are with him. >> he plays your husband. >> yes. he plays bill bailey. he just crushed that part. the two of us would often have these moments of, we cannot believe how great this material is, this writing, this cast, this experience. he spoke of such gratitude the whole way through of having a part like this at this point in his life. he was a family man. he spoke about his children and his wife and his dogs all the time.
8:37 am
it's deeply upsetting that he is not going to get to see his wonderful work. heartbreaking. >> such loving remarks. lets us know the man he was. >> yeah. >> he was very very special. as both of you are. thank you so much. >> thanks, robin. >> helping us start the week off like this. >> thank you. >> you've got to see this. capote versus swans. premiere next wednesday, january 31st on fx then streams the next day on hulu. coming up, robert downey jr. on his new passion project, come on back. coming up, robert downey jr.

8:41 am
affect longevity of our planet. >> reporter: the actor teaming up with come tass kostigen with cool food to help readers reduce their carbon footprint bite by bite. >> i felt overwhelmed by, for lack of a better word, climate crisis. being a fan of tom's a long time, the idea of doing something as simple as a book can be just flip open and go, hey, this is great. almonds, pretty good. cashews better, mangoes are great. then when i'm at the supermarket or making choices on set or just grabbing a snack for the kid, i'm just inserting this kind of data into our meal plans. >> i think a lot of americans share the sentiment that the climate crisis is daunting and you sometimes can feel a little bit helpless. you have taken a way to do something every time you eat.
8:42 am
>> three things you need to survive. water, air and food. only one of those things has a variety that you can make a choice on, and that's food. so why not make it better for the planet? for the average person, just being able to go to the grocery store and pick something up that's good for themselves, good for the planet. it's empowering. >> this is not a cookbook, but there are recipes in here that are fantastic. for me, as a busy mom, it is so nice to open up a book and go, wow, not only is my family going to love this, but it will also be good for the environment, too. >> some of this came out of our experience. my wife susan is a vegan. so before that time, we used to love calamari. so we came up with parts of cali. my kids don't really know the difference. they are eating a climate friendly food that also works for mom. you can sneak things in that are your preference and your kids and partners and whatever. it's just fun. >> you talk little ways of this instead of that.
8:43 am
you reference the blueberries. right? then how you look at that now. >> right. >> yeah. some avengers film. >> in a few hours i will know every secret this shield has tried to eat. blueberry anybody? >> tony eats a lot. looking back i thought, strawberries would have been a better message. could have just sent you a list. >> this book of cool food not the only thing on downey's plate. fresh off his golden globe and critics choice win for oppenheimer. he's now generating oscar buzz for best supporting actor. might i say congratulations. >> thank you. >> yeah, this oppenheimer experience has been amazing. but it has brought me back to first principles which is, a, just for me being able to spend part of the day where i'm not in a tuxedo congratulating myself is very welcome. good for my humility. >> i think he's being really
8:44 am
humble. his creativity. first time for everything. this is the first time it's being shown. so well deserved. now being celebrated. same thing with the book. >> i have been doing this a long time. i think that there's something about this year where i'm just feeling a lot of kind of joy. it's not a welcome distraction. it's actually something that i'm happy all this kind of energy is around us right now because it's synergistic. you know? >> i'm not complaining. >> thank you. >> now the book is full of these fast facts and things you can do today to make a change. it really offers actionable advice. it comes out tomorrow. you guys, of course, also tomorrow we'll be watching to see if robert gets that much anticipated oscar nomination. he's got good energy and cool food. he's on a role. >> some synergy there, as

8:49 am
>> it's a revolutionary act. 'cause we were never told about self care. growing up i never heard the word self love or self care. when you choose that for your life, you know, mind, body and soul, and you choose to actually be healthy and take care of yourself and say, hey, i want therapy, i want to take care of myself and eat healthier. it's really a movement not only for you, but it also changes your family, your community. it's basically going against what the system has told us in many ways where we should, like, follow what they believe health is, where it's actually other options towards health. i just believe it's a way to rise above all the negative energy and things that's going on in the world. just make a true step towards loving yourself and make that a practice. >> you talk about your own self care whether it's the food you eat, working out, prayer, mindfulness. how does all that help to center
8:50 am
you? >> we deal with a lot. i deal with a lot. we deal with a lot. for me, getting up in the morning, just thanking god for the day and being in gratitude automatically sets an intention of what i want for the day. prayer, and taking that time to myself, working out, getting those endorphins going. it can be a walk. it can be a workout, eating the right foods. for me it gives me a clarity. it gives me like a statement that, hey, i love myself. i have had time to myself. i have given this to myself. so when i go out in the world and deal with whatever i'm dealing with and work, i have a happier energy, more joyous energy. a more centered energy. so even when difficulties come, i still am in a more sensitive place because i have already tended to myself and loved myself. it's so important. in my music, in everything, in acting. before i do anything. before i came here this morning
8:51 am
i had my time to read and pray and meditate and just be mindful of the day. >> you also talk about the mental diet. explain what that is. >> the mental diet is super important. for me it's like taking in the things that add on to my life, that support my joy, support my quest to be a better person. and that that may contrast like when i wake up, i don't go first to social media 'cause my mental diet has to be something that i know most important for my spirit and my mind. i can't just take in what's going on in the world first. also, just conversations with certain people. you've been on the phone at times where people are talking negative. talking negative. i have boundaries with that. also just the music that i listen to, i make sure is reaffirming. doesn't mean it's all holy, but it's just -- >> not bringing you down. >> not bringing me down. also the things i watch, all of
8:52 am
it, all of it is really important. the mental diet is just as important as food diet. >> you talked about how you had success in your life but still were feeling unfulfilled. i went digging into the crate, back to your memoir. the more we attain, the more we wish for as if we're scratching off tasks from a to-do list. for me, becoming a husband, one half of an intimate relationship remains unfinished, though i have gotten close a few times. how much of finding fulfillment personally would you find do you think from getting married? do you think that's in the cards? >> i think that would be a beautiful thing. it's a time in my life where i feel like it's the right time. i'm understanding that that love and partnership is one of those things that advances you. you can grow as a human being. you find purpose in yourself
8:53 am
when you are in partnership. you learn more about yourself and life and relationship. it's great to enjoy life with someone if you're able to. marriage is something that i could envision myself doing it for sure. just has the happiness, the right time for me and that person. >> really, before we let you go, quickly. you have an emmy, grammy, oscar. you going for the egot? you going for that tony? >> yes. i would love to achieve that. that would be amazing. i'm actually producing on a new play that will be hitting broadway. i was able to also act in a play on broadway between riverside and crazy. the egot would be a blessing, especially coming from hip hop. i know nobody has achieve that. it would be a big step. as biggie said, never thought hip hop would take off. my goal is to be great and spread love and do great work. if those awards come, i will be
