her home. it's just one of many examples of the damage caused by the rain. and we're not done with the storms just yet. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. >> the heaviest of the rain has already moved through for the day, but more is on the way. >> for the specifics on this, let's go to abc seven news meteorologist sandip. sandhya. >> yeah dan and amna, let's take a look at live doppler seven and you will see where it is raining right now we're going to get you into street level radar around gilroy heading across highway 101 santa teresa boulevard seeing some heavy rain right now as we widen the picture here, i do want to show you what happened just a short time ago, thunderstorm developed and it was moving southeastward, and it did cross parts of morgan hill. as we look right now from the brentwood area, you will notice some light to moderate rain. vasco road. and in the north bay it is steady rain across napa, although not quite as intense as what southern part of our viewing area is dealing with. the wider picture showing you a mix of rain and snow continuing in the sierra, and we've been certainly seeing the rain here in the bay area with those

downpours last night and this morning. so we'll keep those showers in the forecast. the next couple of hours. you will notice, and then it starts to wind down tomorrow morning. the concern is going to be the fog on our storm impact scale. this is a level one through tonight scattered showers flooding concerns remain a slight chance of thunder. so we have a flood watch for the entire north bay until 10 p.m. tonight. and that's because those creeks and streams have already seen flooding roadways. they've already seen the flooding. now it's going to take a while for the creeks and streams to subside. and so the flooding concern is still there. a flood warning for the russian river at guerneville extended until 10 p.m. tonight. this is an area of concern as well. i'll be back with live doppler seven plus a look at the timeline, how long our break will last tomorrow before the next system comes in. coming right up, ama. >> all right, sandhya, thank you. residents in guerneville are doing a lot of cleaning up today after five creek breached the city's banks overnight. firstrillionesponders say heavy rain caused water to rise as high as four feet. rescue crews went door to door last night to

warn more than 100 residents and help assist anyone who needed to evacuate the storm caused schools in guerneville to close for the day. >> in santa cruz county, a cabin was destroyed after a large tree crashed on it. we show you that that tree also blocked parts of highway nine in both directions. abc7 news south bay reporter zach quintus is live in santa cruz county tonight, with more zach. >> yeah. dan caltrans, who maintains highway nine, says that they've done a lot to prepare for any storms this winter. but the ground in the santa cruz mountains is so saturated, and that's what led to that tree coming down into the cabin. that cabin belonging to the woman's family for more than 70 years. and we were with her today as she literally began picking up the pieces a devastating morning for jeanette bemis after a huge tree crashed into her cabin. it's not her primary residence, but it's a treasured one she comes to often . >> my parents bought this place when i was a year old, so this is really the most home i have lately. >> bemis has been using the spot for her local girl scout troop

meetings, and i was planning to come out here this morning and get a fire started in the fireplace and dry it all out and get it set up for the girl scout meeting. >> when i got a text from my neighbor across the street with a photo saying, your house with a couple exclamation marks. >> the back of the cabin faces highway nine. monday morning, a massive tree on the side of the highway furthest from her home slid down the mountainside and fell over. the crown of the tree, crashed right into the cabin. it had an explosive type effect that sent many sentimental items out into the yard, but just the air coming out opened the windows and pushed out this little stuffed polar bear. the downed tree didn't just impact bemis. the road was closed in both directions at highway nine, between keystone way and glengary road for hours as crews worked to clear the tree. falling trees have only been made worse by the repeated storms santa cruz county has seen for more than a year now. these big trees that have substantial root systems, their entire root ball has come up due

to the saturated ground. caltrans spokesperson kevin drabinski said that they've prepared as much as they can for winter storms and are still doing that even as they work to clear existing issues. >> we're just responding, doing our cleaning up, and we'll continue that cycle of preparing, responding and cleaning up and waiting for the next system. >> despite the devastation done to her cabin, bemis is grateful. >> if i had been there sleeping, of course i would not be standing here. i'd be dead though, she says. >> the cabin is a total loss. bemis says she plans to rebuild and keep the beloved land in her family. >> this place is heaven on earth, so that's just a building . >> of course, caltrans had spent hours working to clear that portion of highway nine. they estimated it to be reopened at five. just a few minutes ago. right now, live in santa cruz county. zach fuentes abc seven news. >> all right, zach, thank you for that. and a 100 year old oak tree fell onto three cars this morning in downtown san mateo, totaling two of those cars. officials say they received a

call around 330 this morning of the tree blocking the street at fourth avenue between dartmouth and south el camino real. the street was closed until 1 p.m. while workers cleaned up the debris and removed the tree from the street. one nearby resident says his car was parked right in front of the cars that were hit. i loved this tree because parking under it gave me shelter from the rough californian sun, but honestly, this type of situation makes me a bit more wary. >> now to park under these trees. >> yeah certainly does. officials advise people to park in a garage or carport as trees, branches and debris do fall during storms and rainy season. >> more weather coming up in the forecast in just a moment, but let's move on all across the state, thousands of cal state professors and lecturers are on strike. abc seven news reporter luz pena went to csu east bay today, where professors are joining forces and canceling classes. >> the largest ever us strike of university professors is happening right now across the state. we have 29,000 faculty

members in this csu. >> there are are hundreds to thousands of given at a given campus depending how big it is that will be out on the picket lines or simply just not showing up to work. >> the week long strike is a consequence of what professors are calling failed negotiations with the california state university system. two weeks ago, the system offered a 5% pay raise. the union is asking for at least a 12% pay increase. >> the 5% is just not enough for the high cost of living in the bay area. >> the union is asking the university to use money they have under the reserve accounts. >> we're hoping for the csu administration to put the money it has in the investment funds and in the reserve back into the classroom, because this is a public university and money should be spent in teaching and instruction and research and student services, not in making profits in the corporations, in a statement, the california state university system said the cfa's demand for a 12% raise would cost $312 million.

seven news, san. mateo county's board of supervisors will vote on a proposal that could make it illegal to live in encampments in unincorporated parts of the county. >> the ordinance would allow officials to charge unhoused people with a misdemeanor if they are living in tents in unauthorized public spaces, and refuse shelter. bed offers twice , city and county leaders say the goal is to decrease homelessness and improve the public safety and health concerns of encampments in the east bay. >> the in and out burger near the oakland airport is closing, but business isn't the problem. it's safety. here's abc seven news reporter ryan curry. too much crime. that is why in-n-out burger is closing its location by the oakland airport, they claim while the store makes money, it's no longer safe for customers or employees. our customers and associates are regularly victimized by car break-ins property damage, theft and armed robberies, the company said in a statement. >> i think it's just very sad that we've essentially forced a

been moved to a nearby library. all right, to on the weather. >> it is nice and needed to get a little break from the rain. >> certainly. let's get to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel for when more is coming. sandhya. yeah, we're going to see more as early as late tomorrow night in the north bay and for the rest of the bay area on wednesday. dan and i want to show you live doppler seven right now, because we are still tracking the wet weather. so let's get you into street level radar where we are seeing some rain right now. marsh creek road in the inland east bay, clayton area, also out towards discovery bay.yron highway for vasco roads, so don't be surprised if you do run into some rain right now from napa into american canyon. and i know as people are thinng aut the sierra with allhe sw that fell, avalanche warning until 7 a.m. tahoe area and certainly thet back country of the central sierra. as the avalanche danger is running high. so something to keep in mind if you are thinking

about traveling up there. statewide. snowpack is 55% of average, and in the last 48 hours they received anywhere from a half a foot to almost three feet of snow. here is a look at the statewide picture. and certainly getting soaked in southern california as well. they are seeing some thunderstorm down there. we had our thunderstorm in the south bay earlier today. here's a look at the rainfall totals since friday. ben lomond over seven inches of rain. it was 7.5in for mount tam, believe it or not, in the last 72 hours, if you were with us last week, coastal hills , i mentioned. 6 to 8in and it was certainly nearing that over three inches san rafael, santa rosa, over an inch and three quarters, almost an inch and three quarters there. san francisco, oakland a little bit more than that 1.85 in san jose, these are running totals, 9/10 in livermore and los gatos, close to five inches of rain. temperatures right now in the 50s and the 60s. we do have a coastal flood advisory for

tomorrow morning at 8:00. it runs until noon, and that's because peak high tide, you know, those tides that come up around this time of year. the king tides will be coming up shortly after 9 a.m. dense fog advisory for solano county, 1 to 9 a.m. quarter mile visibility or less. so be prepared for that. here's a look at the headlines tonight. scattered showers tomorrow morning. fog. it's a dry day for the afternoon especially. and then as we look at wednesday, our next round of rain for the entire bay area on our storm impact scale through tonight, we're going to keep it as a level one scattered showers. flooding concerns remain, especially in the north bay, and there is that slight chance of thunder until the sun sets, so the rain will continue to be scattered in nature through tonight. and then as we head towards tomorrow morning, the biggest concern will be areas of fog. your morning temperatures will be in the 40s and the 50s tomorrow afternoon. you're looking at highs in the 50s and 60 uh- first thing in the morning. it's fog, then partly cloudy, and then late in the day we're going to notice the clouds increase. tomorrow night, rain begins to develop in

the north bay first, and then by wednesday morning's commute, you start to see light to moderate rain across the region. that continues at 8 a.m. and then scattered showers for the afternoon. going into the late night hours. now, rainfall projections with this system will range anywhere from about a 10th of an inch to 6/10 of an inch. i do not expect this to be a problematic storm. yes, the ground is saturated, but we do have a dry day ahead tomorrow, so the morning fog and the accuweather seven day forecast and then a chance of showers in the north bay late certainly will be a wet and breezy one level one system for wednesday. we do get a break and then another chance of rain coming into the picture. as we head towards saturday. here's the big news as the niners take on the lions sunday afternoon. it's going to be dry and warmer. upper 60s. can you believe this? so temperatures will be above average as we head towards next week. ama and dan okay, awesome. >> thanks, sandy.
