cars were being swept down the road. good morning. >> welcome to tuesday, january 23rd. >> let's start the check of our forecast with drew. >> yeah, it's a lot quieter down in san diego. that was the wettest january day ever recorded. so they had a lot of rain there. we are quieter this morning compared to this time yesterday. we are seeing live doppler seven giving you the sweep across the region. and you see there's no organized showers that we're dealing with this morning. but we do have some pockets of fog developing. and we thought this would happen this morning because we have a lot of residual moisture in the atmosphere. and it's condensing this morning. half a mile in santa rosa. right now we're down to 3 or 4 miles between mountain view and san jose. so we'll start the morning off with pockets of fog. coolest cities in the 40s like santa rosa at 46, but a lot of us right now under mostly cloudy skies. we are starting out in the mid 50s for our temperatures, so taking a look at the forecast today, it's a lot of cloud cover. we'll call it a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day. the afternoon is dry. we'll get you into the upper 50s and lower

60s. but our next storm is back here tomorrow. it will be a level one. it will impact the wednesday morning commute with light to moderate rain. we'll show you that storm coming up in eight minutes. let's say hi to gloria and serena with traffic. >> good morning drew. good morning everyone at home. i know when i got on the roads this morning, it was raining. but right now it's looking like the roads are pretty dry out there. let's get a live look right now at our highway 80 camera in emeryville. this is one of our busier spots at this time. you can see it's specially busy as those folks head westbound toward the bay bridge. but right now we don't have any major delays or any slowdowns right now. >> thanks, gloria. this morning they have a deal. a massive strike by thousands of california state university workers is now over. it was supposed to last a week, but a surprise tentative agreement came just hours after the strike began. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live at cal state east bay in hayward with what this deal means, lena, reggie, good morning to you. >> after spending just one day out on strike, professors and their students are all expected to be back inside of their

classrooms today here at csu east bay and at all cal state university campuses across the board. this includes nearly 30,000 professors, librarians and other workers across the cal state system. the largest public university system in the country . the california faculty association overnight saying, in case anyone forgot, strikes work , confirming their members will return to work today instead of continuing their week long walkout, the union had demanded a 12% pay raise, but the school said that would cost more than $300 million per year across the school's 23 campuses. i have served over 7000 students who are now science educators, doctors and engineers and nurses . >> yet my salary does not keep up with the cost of living and inflation. >> the union overnight saying this deal reflects the solidarity displayed by faculty,

staff and students. terms of the tentative reach deal include a 5% pay hike for all faculty, raising the salary floor for the lowest paid workers, and increasing parental leave from 6 to 10 weeks. union members are expected to vote in the coming weeks on whether to ratify this deal, reached overnight live in hayward. lena howland abc seven news thank you, lena, the first votes have been cast in the new hampshire primary overnight. >> nikki haley sweeping donald trump six votes to zero in tiny dixville notch, which continued the tradition of casting votes at midnight. but as abc news reporter melissa adam explains, polls show dixville notch may not be a reliable indicator of how things might play out later today. midnight voting in dixville notch, new hampshire, kicking off the first in the nation primary three. >> the town following tradition and all six voters picking

former south carolina governor nikki haley as their republican presidential nominee, haley spent yesterday crisscrossing new hampshire trying to convince voters to deliver her an upset victory. >> we can't be a country in disarray and have a world on fire and go through four more years of chaos because we won't survive it, former president trump's former rivals in the republican primary have officially thrown their support behind him, repeatedly interrupted by protesters. >> i was also honored >> she's back as the former president accused nikki haley of courting democrats, calling her unelectable. >> so if you want a losing candidate who puts america last, vote for nikki haley. it's an uphill battle for haley. polls show her trailing by double digits. >> i love her, okay? she she has the new new style of what we need down in washington, d.c. >> if they don't like them, i like them. >> so, uh, i think he'll help

out the country. >> meanwhile, the new hampshire attorney general's office says it's investigating reports of an apparent robocall that used artificial intelligence to mimic president biden and advising people in the state not to vote in the primary. the white house says the call was not recorded by the president today. biden, vice president harris and their spouses are set to hold a rally together in virginia to discuss abortion access. the primary in south carolina. that's haley's home state is next month. but polls there already show trump leading by more than 30 points. melissa don abc news, manchester, new hampshire one of san francisco's largest democratic clubs, has rescinded its endorsed of president biden over his handling of the israel-gaza conflict. >> the harvey milk lgbtq democratic club voted to revoke support for the president in the march primary election. in the announcement, the group says mr. biden's actions have undermined the long terme interests of both israelis and palestinians.

they're calling for leaders to reevaluate their policies in order to address the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in gaza. the race to fill the u.s. senate seat of dianne feinstein is heating up. >> last night, it was a showdown on the debate stage. the top four candidates, democrats adam schiff, katie porter and barbara lee all sparring along with republican and former la dodgers steve garvey. the primary is now only six weeks away. remember, california has what's called a blanket primary. that means when voters go to the polls, march fifth, the top two candidates regardless of their party, will advance to the general election in november. here's abc seven news reporter tim johns. i just like to repeat this together. >> let's keep it together. >> heated moments monday night during the first debate for the race to be the nets california senator. >> so while others can talk about taking on corporations or taking on industries, some of us actually have done things. >> three democrats and one republican sparred over issues from the war in the middle east to abortion to statewide problems like homelessness.

katie porter highlighting affordable housing as the main priority for her campaign. what we need is housing policy that works for us. >> housing policy that is centered on our needs, crime and public safety were also key discussion points. >> bay area rep barbara lee even coming under fire for crime in her hometown of oakland with debate moderators highlighting the upcoming closure of the city's in-n-out. we have to have more resources coming into our communities to make sure that there's more interaction between the police and the community. >> all three democratic candidates took turns attacking republican steve garvey, especially over his past support of former president donald trump. >> garvey maintaining that he's a moderate republican and trying to paint his opponents as career politicians. >> i owe no one. i'm a fresh face. i'll have fresh ideas. i will listen to needs of californians. the two candidates who received the most votes during the primary will ultimately move on to the general election in the fall, regardless of their party. >> but given the state's liberal

tilt, political science professor melissa michaelson says it's often the democratic candidate who wins the primary that comes out on top in a lot of cases, including this one, it can turn out to be that the primary is where things are decided. tim johnson, abc seven news. >> the east bay the effort to recall oakland mayor xiang tao is moving forward. >> recall organizers are telling abc seven news merit did not respond to the certified letter that they sent by friday's deadline. the group's next step will be to publish a recall campaign ad in a major newspaper. they're hoping to collect 25,000 signatures to present to the city, which is about 10% of oakland's registered voters. the city manager of daly city will become one of the highest paid in the state. the city council voted to raise the salary of thomas piccolotti to more. than $440,000 by 2026, according to the state comptroller's office. as of 2022, only the city managers of sacramento, santa

clara, ventura and beverly hills make more in total wages. the group accountable all daly city does not approve of the raise. we have a deficit in the city and it would not be prudent for any of us to approve, as the mayor of daly city, i can say, without any hesitation that mr. piccolotti is worth his salary and much more. after discussion in public comment, the city council ultimately approved this increase with three out of four members in agreement with the sudden death of warriors assistant coach dan milojevic, impacting, of course, not just double asian, but his friends and family and his home country of serbia. >> an emotional tribute yesterday during a pregame ceremony in belgrade, where he used to play and coach. >> you can see it here a giant mural. everyone in the arena had on black shirts with his picture . now, back here in san

francisco, though, the warriors practice for the first time since his death in salt lake city, players were wearing shirts featuring the word bronte, which means brother. and that's how coach dickey referred to his warriors brothers. many players say they are still in shock, trying to cope with the devastating loss. >> he was always a positive person. he came in, he never even he had a down day. he wouldn't show it. he came in uh- he was super positive, always full of energy and it's a blessing to be able to come to work and, you know, do something that you love and know someone trying to honor him that way. >> the warriors haven't played a game since last monday in memphis. tomorrow so the warriors will return home for a game against the atlanta hawks, and the team is planning to honor coach dickey in a special ceremony. we will will be there to play a basketball game. >> um, we will find a way to mourn and grieve and play all in the same evening.

and hanging onto anything that they could reach. and moments later, a second wave rushes in and knocks out windows. the good thing is, only minor injuries were reported, but the army says that at least one third of the base was flooded and this is going to go down in quadra's history books as one of its most challenging times ever. >> in its 80 year history. we will get through this and we are settling in for a marathon of recovery head non mission personnel were evacuated from the island, which is located in the marshall islands in the pacific. >> the flooding has closed two nearby airports, possibly for weeks. reggie, that is incredible. >> video gloria thank you. we're keeping an eye on the severe weather. winter weather still impacting several states across the midwest. an ice storm from oklahoma to illinois caused havoc on the roads and dire situations for households. here's abc news reporter reena roy. oh, dramatic video south of saint louis shows a fire truck

spinning out of control on an icy residential road, hitting a car and almost crashing into a home before sliding to a stop and appearing to be perfectly parked in someone's driveway in arkansas. >> drone video capturing this pickup. struggling to stay on the road, driving was also battling icy conditions in oklahoma city. deadly winter storms sweeping the nation. at least 75 people killed around the us this month alone, many involving hypothermia or accidents. on the road. these residents in milwaukee without heat in frigid temperatures for several days now, some leaving their ovens on to try and warm up their homes. so many families are out of heat. >> these poor children, these poor babies are going to get pneumonia. major water lines bursting in memphis. >> nearly 400,000 people told to boil water or drink bottled water. >> they're talking about boiling water. and i'm like, we don't have any water to boil. >> businesses forced to shut down. we missed six days of

work. >> no water. we haven't had garbage pickup in ten days. >> thousands of people in alabama in a similar situation. the water there being handed out . reena roy abc news, new york. >> in the north bay, guerneville residents are using a break in the rain to dry out and to clean up after fife creek overflowed its banks. we first told you about this yesterday morning. people had to be. people were woken up in the middle of the night as sonoma county officials went door to door, alerting people to leave their homes. they were banging on the trailers to see if everybody was okay. >> there was about three inches of water on our floor. our whole trailer is covered in water right now. um it's just been a rough night. just was a rough night. >> we know that was tough. the red cross is now offering assistance flooding has happened in that area before. neighbors tell abc seven news they'd like the county to develop some type of flood protection plan so that

they can be safe from future storms. >> now we're going to take you south to some unbelievable video from san diego, where a state of emergency has been issued. people there experiencing extreme flooding. emergency crews were called to help people escape as water rushed into their homes. as you can see, pets had to be rescued in the highest part of our house was our kitchen island, and that's where we were sitting on top of until we were able to get out safely fast moving floodwaters drag cars along the street and several other cars were left stranded in the water. many portions of interstate 15 had to be shut down after floodwaters turned parts of the highway into lakes. wow, look how fast it's moving. that is incredible. >> and in san diego, we have nearly 200 years of records. they go back well into the 1800s, and this was the single wettest january day on record. wow. so you can see they just got inundated with nearly three inches of rain in just a short amount of time. kind of like new year's eve in san francisco when

we got all that rain and just a really short window. that's what happened there. and looks like we have a pretty active pattern over the next couple of weeks. our next chance of rain is coming here tomorrow. but take a look at this. we're looking at our water here and we just got the latest numbers in and now we have a couple of cities that are actually above their average rainfall for this date 100% in this column would be your exactly where you need to be at this point in the water year. san jose, santa rosa we are now above average for this time of the year. we're closing in in san francisco. we're pretty close to average, a little bit lower in oakland and sfo, but we have several chances of rain in the extended forecast today, though it's a mix of sun and clouds. we have temperatures in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. tonight we'll bring those clouds right on back and then after midnight we'll find those showers. returning to the forecast. it's a level one tomorrow morning for light to moderate rain. it will impact the morning commute. we'll have a bit of a breeze along the coastline. the good news is that the rain doesn't last all that long. but here's future weather

agencies, so the maps will have one unified look across bart, caltrain, muni and the ferries. transit stops will also be upgraded with qr codes that you can scan for real time info. bart says the maps are still in the design phase, but they do plan to test them out and let the public weigh in. >> in the south bay, there are plans to honor a silicon valley legend this week, a statue honoring norm mineta will be unveiled thursday at san jose international airport, which of course, also bears his name. mineta started in the san jose mayor's office and went on to become america's longest serving transportation secretary. he died in 2022. he was 90 years old. minetta statue will stand in the baggage claim area of terminal b, which sees 70% of the airport's passenger traffic coming up at 530. the 2024 oscar nominations live from la. >> a break in the winter weather. here is a live look outside.

first degree murder over the past year, farm workers on the half moon bay community have come together to heal some. i'm turning to music and gloria talked to some of those people. >> good morning reggie. farm workers impacted by the mass shooting in half moon bay exactly one year ago today. they are taking a class that is helping them heal. i had a chance to talk to those farm workers and see them play, and it was so touching. they are learning how to play the accordion, including the one person who survived the mass shooting and was injured. you could see him right there in december. the group performed for the community music in san
