but if you want a president who puts america first every single time, you're gonna vote for donald j. trump. you have to get out! [ cheers ] >> reporter: all right, george. so this is the line inside this polling location. i want to show you just how far it stretches here. look, it wraps all the way around here inside of this high school. now, of course, voters here tell me they know their vote is consequential. this is really down to a two-person place. as for nikki haley, she tells me win or lose, she's staying in this race all the way to her home state of south carolina. the problem though, she does not have a strong showing here, she's gonna have to keep up that momentum. the south carolina primary still weeks away, george. >> sure is. thank you very much, rachel. let's bring in rick klein. mary bruce said it at the top. the polls show donald trump really comes in with a head of steam. >> george, it's been a wild couple of weeks in this primary. our 538 polling average shows just since december how this gap has narrowed between trump and haley as there's been more attention. just in the last couple weeks
7:07 am
you start to see haley tick up a little bit. even since iowa ticking up. the problem for her, donald trump ticked up even more. of all of the tumult in this race, donald trump still in commanding position just like he was in iowa. >> independents can vote here in new hampshire. >> precisely. this is a different electorate. because independents can vote, it has highlighted what i think is the fining split inside the republican party. donald trump, among republicans in the last poll, he gets about two thirds of core republicans. that's a blowout. but nikki haley keeps it close by driving independents to the polls. she gets almost 60% of those voters. here's why it matters. usually republicans dominate in primaries. in new hampshire undeclared voters are only about one-third of the electorate. this is interesting. back in 2012, last time there was a democrat running for re-election, independents made up 45% of the republicans. those are the kind of numbers nikki haley is looking for tonight.
7:08 am
but here's one catch, george. unlike in 2012, you do have a write in effort for joe biden. he's not technically on the ballot but his aides are trying to get people to the polls for him. it could be that draws some voters away from nikki haley. >> thank you very much, rick. >> george, what do you think of that? >> the big question tonight is what happens with donald trump? does he put this nomination away by getting more than 50% of the vote? two things i'm looking at though. how do those independents break, and do they come out in big numbers? that could give some clues for the general election. finally, as rick mentioned, this write-in campaign for joe biden. he's got to avoid embarrassment tonight by having a strong showing. even though he's not officially on the ballot in this campaign. >> we're all going to be looking for that. you can see full coverage of the new hampshire primary starting at 7:00 p.m. eastern on abc news live and right here on abc when the results are in. we're going to turn to the new strike on iran backed militants in yemen. the latest response, repeated attacks on ships in the red sea.
