>> the company ordering employees to undergo retraining while the ceo meets lawmakers on capitol hill about this month's mid-flight blowout. >> and it may have kept you up, may have woke you up the entire bay area, getting another round of rain overnight. we're in for a wet wednesday morning commute. >> here we go again. good morning. welcome to wednesday, january 24th. yes >> and you know, gloria and drew, have you covered when it comes to that. >> yeah. so light rain right now. heavier rain on the way. here's live doppler seven over the last hour showing you that moisture is streaming in from the west right now. most of the rain currently is light, but we're seeing downpours that are developing off the coastline right here. we're going to watch a lot of this move onshore over the next couple of hours. it is a level one today. we'll have that light to moderate rain out here. we'll have a wet morning commute and it will be breezy along the coast. i think the heaviestrillionain probably falling around 8 a.m. this morning. and future weather is confirming that as well. by about 8 a.m. we're tracking those downpours as they work

through the region. just anticipate some standing water on our area roadways this morning. we'll have some downpours to deal with, but by 11 a.m. the heaviestrillionain is pushing out of here. but we will have some isolated showers to deal with for the rest of the afternoon. so looking at the region by region breakdown today, we'll find a lot of cloud cover on and off. showers the heaviest in the morning temperature wise, mainly in the upper 50s. hi, gloria. >> good morning drew. good morning everyone. and because of thatrillionain, we want to remind you to be extra careful out there on the roads this morning. we're already getting reports of a spin out. this is in this area, emeryville. so this is your highway 80 camera in emeryville. and we're hearing reports of a solo car spin out. this is on westbound 80 in albany by golden gate fields, and it is blocking one lane. so there is a slight delay in that area here on your emeryville camera. you can see there is a slight delay there as well. so again, be very careful out there on the roads this morning reggie. >> thank you gloria. tonight the warriors are back home for their

first game since the sudden death of their assistant coach deion milojevic. abc seven news reporter lena howland live at chase center this morning with the tributes they're planning during tonight's game. lena >> reggie, it's going to be an emotional night for dub nation here at chase center as the entire warriors community prepares to pay tribute to their assistant coach tonight and for the rest of the season, all warriors players will be wearing jerseys with a special dm patch on the upper left side in honor of assistant coach deion milojevic. that same team logo in a heart will also be unveiled on the floor of the chase center court, which will stay up for the rest of the year. keep in mind tonight's game against the atlanta hawks is the first game since coach dickey's passing, and it's been ten days since their last game. the warriors took a few days off and resumed practice on monday of this week, but it's hard to know what to expect tonight. >> very difficult times all the way around. um just you

grounding of its 737 max nine planes. and gloria, this is coming as we're learning about a new concern on a different boeing plane. >> that's right. kumasi. the faa is investigating after a boeing 757 lost its nose wheel shortly before taking off from atlanta on saturday. passengers had to get off the plane and be bused back to the terminal. that incident comes as alaska airlines ceo speaks publicly about the incident on one of his company's 737 max nine planes earlier this month, where a door plug blew off mid-flight. he says he is frustrated and angry after inspectors found loose bolts on many max nine jets at the same time, united airlines, which also flies the max nine, says it found loose bolts on its fleet of jets. ceo scott kirby, also sharing the airline will consider alternatives to the boeing 737 max due to quality concerns. kirby says that boeing needs real action to restore its previous reputation for quality.

boeing says that it will pause production at its 737 factory in seattle tomorrow, so employees can attend workshops about quality and more trainings will be held over the next few weeks. kumasi >> thank you, gloria and 86 year old east bay woman with disability has been stuck in the philippines trying to get home to her son since early december. an airline policy has kept her grounded overseas for weeks now. abc seven news anchor dion lim is working to help moses domingo sits inside his 86 year old mother josiah's bay point home, and it's clear how big a role religion plays in her life. >> yeah, she praised her heart. i think it's the best way to put it. >> she's currently relying on that faith, hoping she and her only son will be reunited again soon. after a nearly two month separation. >> when she's upset, she's she cries. sometimes when i talk to her on the phone, you know, she just wants to come home. i want her to come home. you know? we

all want her to come home. >> jobina had gone to visit family in the philippines last september and booked a flight back to the bay area for december 5th on philippine air, also known as pal, but when she disclosed her copd or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on a medical form, the airline did not allow her to fly unless she had a portable oxygen machine. >> and then suddenly, of course, now we learn it's $3,100 to get the portable oxygen oxygen concentrator. >> so jovita made doctor's appointments to prove she was healthy enough to fly. here's a note from a doctor in palawan, which clearly indicates she is fit to travel and there is no need for oxygen support. here's another letter from a doctor in pittsburgh who called it unbelievable. the airline wouldn't permit her to fly, but even then, no go believe the doctors, she said she's good to fly. >> she's good to fly. reporter. >> the airline issued jovita a travel credit instead, which still didn't solve how jovito would get back to the bay area. if pal still require her to bring an oxygen tank on board.

>> and yeah, just she couldn't afford it. >> when our inquiries to philippine air did not yield results, we contacted congressman mark desaulnier's office, the philippine consulate, and the department of transportation all reached out to pal. so after months of not getting anywhere, i'm just utter like, you know, turmoil late monday night, moses got this voicemail he dispenser from philippine airlines. >> we will, uh, refund the remaining amount values of the ticket because of the time zone difference. >> moses is still waiting to connect with pal to work out the details. however, this still doesn't solve the problem of getting his mom back. if airline policy won't allow her to fly with her medical condition. for moses, at least it's a start. >> it's very encouraging. i'm hoping, uh, this will all help get my mom home sooner than later. >> in an email to moses, the dot tells me they're investigating to see if there was a violation of the air carrier access act and if jovito was discriminated against because of her disability. we're also reaching

out to several airlines to see if someone can accommodate her. so that jovita and moses can be together once again in san francisco. i'm diane lim, abc seven news. this morning a woman is safe after a really scary ordeal in the east bay. >> she spent monday night stuck in her truck upside down in rushing water. her dramatic rescue was recorded outside duval regional park in livermore . alameda county fire says she was stuck from 7 p.m. monday night until they got notified, which wasn't until 10 a.m. tuesday. the woman reportedly tried to drive over a bridge that was submerged in water and look what happened. the water was moving so fast it swept her truck off the bridge and it flipped it in a creek. rescue crews say they could only get to her by helicopter. it's very deceiving. >> a lot of people think that it may only be knee high waist high, but when it's traveling at a good clip like that, you got a good amount of pounds per square inch on every portion of your

body. if it's enough to move a vehicle, it probably take your legs out. >> wow. the woman had symptoms of hypothermia, but no other injuries. and we're not done because that same rescue chopper you just saw then had to fly to napa county to rescue a hiker who fell 20ft down a waterfall. the napa county and angwin fire departments use a rope system to pull the woman up from linda falls in. angwin, then carried her about a mile to safety. the 53 year old woman was taken to a local hospital with major injuries this morning. >> we're getting a better look at the damage left behind in san diego after heavy rain inundated that region on monday. entire blocks have been left damaged after mud and water rushed into people's homes, and many people had just minutes to get away. >> the water came in through the door and it was very super fast. it took like probably 25 minutes and the level of the water went up to two feet. wow >> some residents, like ramon de la mora, said that they are still figuring out where they're going to stay and what they're

going to eat as they wait for next steps. >> knowing that we were able to do is to grab a few documents, the important ones, and the doc and my wife and we just ran away. we couldn't even took the cars. >> a state of emergency was declared in san diego as parts of the city were left underwater . some residents are now demanding the city do more to protect their neighborhoods. they claim they have faced minor flooding during storms for years , but the city hasn't done enough to mitigate that issue. time now near 511 and we have more rain today. >> here's live doppler seven. you can see the stream of moisture here that is now arrived. we have light to moderate rain falling, but we do anticipate more downpours moving through later on this morning. let's go in a little bit tighter. here's the local view on live doppler seven. you can see some downpours developing. heading for marin county. but you look off our coastline. we have some lightning strikes developing. so it's not out of the question. we could also have a thunderstorm around here over the next couple of hours. that's something we're watching very

closely. so for the morning commute, i would add a couple extra minutes to the commute. it is wet throughout the entire morning drive. we have isolated downpours at times, and those temperatures in the low and mid 50s, and there's probably standing water on a lot of our area freeways and roads this morning. just be aware of that. here's how the sky looks as we go throughout the day. scattered showers. the best chance in the morning as we head into the afternoon, we'll keep a lot of the cloud cover. there's an isolated chance of a shower, but anything would be light. it's the winds that start to pick up. we'll see those gusts later on this afternoon near 20 to 25mph. so it's a rainy morning out there. take the umbrella with you. we'll get those temperatures into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees for those daytime highs. now morning rain today. we dry out tomorrow, but the clouds are back here to end the week. and over the weekend we do have a little bit of rain to talk about. we'll show you that. and also the niners forecast coming up in just a few minutes. thank you drew. >> la to vegas by train in half the time it takes to drive. coming up the new funding for a long talked about high speed rail project. when work is

west high speed rail project has already been in the works for a long time. construction is set to begin this summer, which is expected to bring thousands of jobs. it set out to be a fully electric zero emission system. it should get you there in about two hours to drive. right now is about four hours without traffic, and they think this will be done by 2028, in time for the olympics to come to la. >> the l.a. times is laying off 20% of its staff, and one of the most severe workforce reductions in its history. this announcement came just days after union members held a day

long walkout to protest rumored cuts. the l.a. times guild released a statement saying in part, quote, we still believe in the los angeles times and the important role it plays in a vibrant democracy. but a newspaper can't play that role when its staff has been cut to the bone. end quote. these layoffs impact about 115 people, or a quarter of the newsroom staff. they come after the times laid off 70 people in june. >> and that's that's huge. it's going to be a, you know, something that will echo throughout not just l.a. times, but also other smaller organizations, too, where they're already struggling. >> the owner of the l.a. times said the cuts are necessary because the newspaper is. losing 30 to $40 million every year. is today. ebay is expected to lay off nearly 1000 of its employees . ebay says layoff notifications will be happening over zoom. all employees have been told to work

from today to, quote, provide some space work from home today, i should say, to provide some space and privacy for these conversations. it's affecting full time employees at the san jose based company. this is the second round of layoffs in less than a year. last february, ebay announced it was laying off 500 employees after more than a decade in san francisco, one of the city's annual conferences says it's not coming back. >> lesbians who tech has been held in the castro district, drawing the likes of kamala harris and megan rapinoe and other big names. but now it's going to new york city. and as abc seven news reporter tim johns explains, a lot of people aren't sad that it's leaving. it's another exit out of san francisco after ten years of being hosted in the city's famous castro neighborhood, the lesbians who tech conference says they're done with the city by the bay, boasting 15,000 attendees in 2023, this year, their departure is welcome news to many local businesses.

>> a lot of businesses didn't know what was going on. i mean, something as simple as taking your trash out. nobody knew where to put it. traditionally held inside the castro theater since 2022, the conference has also shut down two blocks of the street outside, putting up massive barriers and makeshift structures in the middle of the road, something several businesses we spoke to told us was detrimental. no business was allowed to happen. deliveries also, the event was closed in so they were only allowed to stay in their area for weighty. >> duckman works at rossi's deli, he says after several difficult years during and after the pandemic, another week with little to no business was the last thing they needed. >> a lot of people have been staying from home, leaving san francisco, so i think them having an event was nice, but it would have been a lot better if it was inclusive of the whole community. >> reporter the concerns were heard all the way to city hall. supervisor raphael mandelman, who represents the castro district, says although he thinks the castro theater, closing for renovations, played a role in the conference moving this year, he knows lesbians who tech were aware of some of the

complaints from the neighborhood . >> lesbians who tech made representations about their desire to try to address some of those they were uh- relatively inflexible about some of the requested changes. >> mandelman says he's open to having the conference come back into town in the future. however, he tells me if it does come back, it'll have to be with some changes. >> if they come back in the future. i think we need to take a hard look at the footprint and figure out how to minimize impact on on businesses in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news inspiring the next generation of storytellers right here at abc seven with a focus on diversity and inclusion. >> last night, the group bay area, bay area story tellers of color came to our station for a panel discussion and a tour of our newsroom and studio. this is a group that's dedicated to helping each other grow, collaborate, and connect in tech journalism and public relations. members are involved in many big news organizations and top pr agencies in the bay area. last

watching very closely, but we'll keep those downpours moving through marin county over the next 30 minutes. and then this line moves through the city. and about the next 90 minutes or so, it's a level one today, but it's the timing of this system that's the biggest impact. it's coming during the morning rush. i know wednesday is a day where a lot of us do go into the office. we're not working from home. just add a couple of extra minutes to the commute. we'll have some standing water here. the heaviest rain moves out of here really quickly. by 10 a.m. it's just isolated showers throughout the afternoon. then thursday is looking beautiful. we get a lot of sunshine here tomorrow. thursday is a dry day, but then the clouds roll back in here and on friday throughout the day in the north bay, we could have some light showers to deal with, but most of us are dry. on friday, rain fall today you could see anywhere from about a third to three quarters of an inch of rain. as this front moves through. so take the umbrella this morning. you do need it. temperatures only in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. here is the accuweather seven day forecast showing you at that level one this morning.

atlanta hawks at chase center. tipoff is at 7 p.m. >> number six, the ceo of boeing will meet with lawmakers on capitol hill today. senators are vowing to eventually hold a public hearing on safety concerns after the alaska airlines mid-air door blowout earlier this month. number seven, netflix is phasing out its $12 a month ad free plan. >> the least expensive ad free plan will now cost more than $15 a month. setter health park in sacramento could be the next possible home for the oakland athletics, according to the chronicle. sutter health park is home to the san francisco giants triple-a affiliate, the river cats. sacramento mayor darrell steinberg said tuesday. he is, quote, over the moon about that possibility. the a's have one year left on their lease at the coliseum. the proposed stadium in las vegas will not be done for several more years. >> negotiations for who will purchase the former raiders training facility in alameda are

now underway, according to the chronicle. the alameda county board of supervisors is considering selling the site to the oakland roots and soul sports clubs or to a company called steam factory. oakland the 17 acre site includes two buildings which are made of offices, conference rooms and fitness spaces. one of san jose's popular dining destinations will now be permanently closed to cars. yesterday, the city council voted to keep san pedro street between santa clara street and saint john street shut down for pedestrian only. the street first closed during the pandemic to try a car free way of life. supporters say it's helped local businesses thrive. >> i've been working on san pedro street for the last 20 years uh- thanks to the temporary closure of san pedro square during the pandemic. uh- many of our businesses, my friends, were able to survive and it's exciting to know this will soon be a permanent closure . >> originally, san jose fire opposed the plan because they said it didn't account for a fire code. however now they say

morning, so taking a look at how the day is shaping up, the best chance for those downpours early on this morning into the afternoon we will get a break from the heaviestrillionain. we'll have mostly cloudy skies, perhaps an isolated shower, but the main event is really this morning. temperatures only getting into the upper 50s for daytime highs. let's see how that wet commute is doing with gloria. good morning. >> good morning. yeah, because of that rain, expect a messy, wet commute. today we're going to get a live look outside. right now. this is our 101 camera in san jose at the 8-80 overcrossing. and even though we do have wetrillionoads this morning, it's not causing any major delays there right now. but of course it is still early, so we're going to keep tracking this for you and then as far as your drive times for this morning, right now it is slow getting from tracy to dublin. that will take you about 46 minutes. and then from antioch to concord that will take you 19 minutes in the east bay this morning, a two year old boy is back with his mother after being taken during a suspected carjacking. >> police say the child was in

the back seat of a honda accord. they believe that car was on 85th avenue near g street in oakland, and that's not too far from the coliseum. the mother says the carjacker left the boy at a warehouse complex in san leandro. >> he found the child and employee said a vehicle had pulled over and dropped the child off, and then fled to a black male juvenile about two years old. >> and there's the video officers reuniting the boy and his mom yesterday. police have not said if they found the car or if there are any suspects who have been arrested in connection to the carjacking. >> for the second year in a row, governor newsom is highlighting another drop in highway shootings throughout the state. 16 people died in highway shootings in 2021. that number dropped to 10 in 2022, and just four last year. here in the bay area, caltrans confirms 200 highway cameras are up to help stop these crimes from happening. but not all of them will be fully operating until the spring. hercules mayor dan romero is in favor of the

lunar new year celebrations underway at disney california adventure. >> we get a look inside the festivities at that park. but first, a check on the weather with drew. >> yeah. good morning, 540 and we are tracking rain. our next storm system has arrived. you can see that stream of moisture headed into the bay area. we have some downpours that are developing. i do want to press in a little tighter into marin county, parts of the east bay. there you can see some heavy rain falling as it moves into mill valley. and as we head towards berkeley and even emeryville, we do have some heavier showers to deal with. so let's break this down region by region. the best chance of finding some of those heavier showers this morning, but along the coast will keep those chances for isolated showers throughout the afternoon. we'll get those temperatures mainly into the upper 50s for daytime highs. now, looking at the bay shoreline, we'll have those showers early on, creating a wet morning commute. but even into the afternoon and evening, there are still the chance that 1 or 2 light showers could still be with us to finish out the day and it's a similar story inland, too, as we look at the forecast,

gorgeous. we have a lot of sunshine and dry weather on thursday, but the clouds are back here on friday. rainfall estimates this morning will pick up anywhere from a 2:45 quarters of an inch of rain. just be aware there's a lot of standing water on our roadways this morning around us. so saturated. all this water is just running off and kind of standing in spots. as you take a look at future weather heading into friday and into the weekend, the storm track is really aimed at eureka, but you can see we're getting brushed by a few showers saturday in the north bay. i think the rest of the region is dry, but then that storm track lifts well to the north on sunday. sunday is looking beautiful with warmer weather and a lot of sunshine. perfect for the niners at levi's stadium. still a kickoff temperature of 70 degrees with a lot of sunshine. and then by the fourth quarter down to 60 with clear skies. accuweather seven day forecast. wet morning today. drying out tomorrow. clouds back here on friday with the north facing the best chance of a shower friday into saturday. sunday we brighten up, we warm up and then that warmer weather continues. monday. our next chance of rain on tuesday.
