the last person standing between the trump/biden rematch. >> with donald trump, you have one bout of chaos after another. this court case, that controversy, this tweet, that senior moment. you can't fix joe biden's chaos with republican chaos. >> reporter: after two disappointing losses in iowa, new hampshire, haley's path to the nomination is only growing more difficult. she's up against history. no republican candidate has ever won the first two states and went on to lose the nomination. >> when you win iowa and you win new hampshire, they've never had a loss. there's never been. so we're not gonna be the first, i can tell you. >> reporter: hours earlier when i asked trump about haley staying in the race, he insisted he wasn't that concerned. mr. president, is she a threat to you? >> no. i don't care if she stays in. let her do whatever she wants. it doesn't matter. >> reporter: but once she refused to drop out after the win, he lashed out, calling her delusional. >> when i watched her in a fancy

dress that probably wasn't so fancy. i said, what's she doing? we won. i don't get too angry, i get even. >> reporter: trump's speech was light on policy, heavy on personal attacks and grievances. the former president making false claims about everything, from the 2020 election to democratic policy, to who was allowed to vote in the new hampshire republican primary. the nikki haley primary campaign responding to trump's speech overnight calling it an angry rant that offered the american people nothing about his vision for the future of the country, robin. >> all right, rachel. thank you. we'll bring in our political director, rick klein, to break down the results. good morning, rick. >> good morning, robin. it was striking to see the record turnout in new hampshire. unlike iowa, you had new records. you saw a bunch of places with nikki haley did quite well. it was also really interesting to see how different the electorate was. different kind of voters. 46% of people voting in the republican primary were independents. that is a big difference from iowa. you see it reflected in some of the big issues in the exit poll. 47% of republicans say biden was
7:06 am
legitimately elected in 2020. the other side is wrong on the facts. but again, for republican, that's actually a pretty striking number when you compare it to other places. get this, 42% of republicans voting yesterday said they don't think joe biden is qualified, fit to be president. that's a warning sign if you're donald trump. also this split on abortion. fascinating. these are republicans. two-thirds say they oppose a national ban on abortion. that's a big difference than we have seen in other places. if you look at what's coming up ahead, you start to see the enormity of the challenge for nikki haley. she's right. there's lots of states that haven't voted. most of the nation has not voted. but if you hone in on what's coming up in the next couple of weeks, you start to see the stark challenge. she's not even on the ballot in nevada. she can't get any of those delegates. next up her home state of south carolina. that really is must win. the reason is, you have about a month until then, then super tuesday is hot on its heels. that's when you have big state likes texas, north carolina.
7:07 am
virginia. some of them allow democrats and independents to vote, like new hampshire. much more lax rules on those things. bottom line, she's got to win in south carolina to have any chance of even lasting that long. >> all right, rick. appreciate it. george? >> let's get more from jon karl and mary bruce. i watched rick go through the map right there, jon. nikki haley, hard to see a path toward any kind of nomination for her at this point. >> look, new hampshire was the state where she was best positioned to win of all states. she came in second. she wanted to come in second in iowa and she wanted to win in new hampshire to propel her to what still would have been an uphill battle against trump. instead, third in iowa, she loses a two-person race in new hampshire. but, george, it's not over. we should keep in mind what rick said in the beginning. only two small states have voted. she goes to her home state, where true, trump is even more popular there than he was in new hampshire or iowa. >> but her home state, tim scott is endorsing donald trump.
7:08 am
>> both home state senators and everybody in the congressional delegation except for one member of congress, the governor. they're all with trump. let's not forget, she got elected governor twice there. she was a popular governor. got re-elected overwhelmingly. this is not over. >> are you actually convinced she's going to stay in through south carolina? >> look, she's the only one left. she has the money. she has the resources. she has a candidate that she's running against in donald trump who is volatile, under investigation, all that. look at his speech last night. it was vindictive, angry, threatening. it continued after he was done speaking. it went on social media, complaining about fox news, attacking his former press secretary. he is a volatile candidate. i think there will be pressure on her to drop out, but there will also be donors who want to stay in just because you don't know what's going to happen to him. >> is this truly the candidate joe biden wants? >> the message from the white house and the president's campaign is joe biden beat donald trump before. he can beat him again.
7:09 am
this morning the message coming out of the biden campaign is game on. they are very clearly gearing up for a general election. the president, in a statement last night said flatly, donald trump is going to be the gop nominee. he said our very democracy is at stake. he made a direct appeal to those key independents and republican voters who don't support trump to join his fight. george, he's also changing up his campaign structure. he is dispatching two of his top white house aides who helped run the 2020 campaign sending him over to help manage his re-election. perhaps the clearest sign that he's changing gears, biden himself is ramping up direct attacks on trump. he called him out 14 times yesterday. >> no question. if you look at the results, you basically have two incumbents. on the republican side, donald trump, democratic side joe biden. relatively joe biden did better with democrats than donald trump did with republicans. >> a lot better and without really campaigning, without having his name on the ballot. look, a lot of those voted in new hampshire. we saw this in iowa as well, who
7:10 am
voted for the nontrump alternative, which was nikki haley. didn't vote. they told people they did not vote because they liked nikki haley. they voted because they wanted to oppose donald trump. this is a phenomenon that could really hurt him in a general election which you have significant number of republicans and republican leaning independents who simply will not vote for donald trump. in a close race, that could be decisive. >> jon karl, mary bruce, thank you very much. michael? >> all right, george. we're gonna turn to the middle east now and new u.s. air strikes targeted iran backed militia groups. this time in iraq. our chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz is here. martha, you spoke to iran's foreign minister. >> i certainly did, michael. iran is at the center of all of this. the u.s. air strikes have been ramping up every day, growing in scope and frequency, with militants targeting american assets throughout the region. overnight, u.s. central command announcing another strike in yemen targeting two houthi anti-ship missiles posing an imminent threat. this is the tenth military air

strike in the region. a separate operation tuesday targeted three sites in iraq, including a weapons storage facility housing armed drones and missiles. the strikes in direct retaliation for attacks on american troops over the weekend, including the al asaid air bass where military personnel suffered traumatic brain injuries. and in the red sea, the u.s. also trading fire with the iran backed houthis. iran's foreign minister praising the yemeni rebel attacks on commercial vessels and targeting of u.s. navy ships. he called them brave, but denying evidence his country is supplying the weapons. >> the pentagon sent out pictures of those weapons showing they were from iran. >> it's a show they put on tv, he claims. american officials have sent multiple private messages to iran, warning against escalation.
7:12 am
is there a red line for iran where you would enter a war with the u.s.? the minister saying the danger of a wider war has increased, and that the threat will persist as long as the u.s. stands behind israel. foreign minister blamed the war in gaza for all of these militant attacks, but expect these retaliations to continue. since deterence has clearly not worked. guys? >> always appreciate your reporting. now to the dangerous winter weather. an icy mix in the northeast. 17 states under flood watch for combination of heavy rain and melting snow. you know ginger's tracking it all, including a dangerous fog alert as people get ready to drive the work. ginger? >> so many people. 49% of our country is covered in some level of snow. we've been so cold. now you're going to take warm air and rain, put it on top of that, and that makes fog.
