tonight, a sheriff's deputy shot and the suspect still on the loose. the gunshots coming from a seemingly quiet row of warehouses in union city. people nearby telling us tonight what they heard as the deputy still sits in the hospital. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley, and i'm ama daetz. >> luckily, that deputy is expected to be okay, but authorities say the suspect is still out there armed and dangerous. >> now, this shooting came while the alameda county deputy was serving an eviction notice on dow avenue, right off alvarado niles road. >> multiple agencies have been on scene in that area, combing through streets to find this suspect. that's where we find lauren martinez live for us with the latest on the search. lauren ama and dan officers are still

out here. >> we continue to hear a helicopter circling above us around eight tonight. we heard at least three flash bangs go off and authorities tell me they know the suspect is in this area . the search for an armed and deadly suspect in union city stretches hours long. on wednesday afternoon, one of two alameda county deputies serving an eviction notice was shot 33373 roselle avenue, shots.i. >> were you hit? i got hit in the arm. >> the officer was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. authorities say details of the eviction are unclear at this time. >> we're not sure if they were using that space for a residence or if they were using it for a business. those details are still being worked out. >> the area off dow avenue is commercial and expansive. we heard from a delivery truck driver who was sitting in his truck when he heard the shots. he stepped out and saw the injured officer.

>> the ems came and picked him up across the street between the two buildings of these, until calm and then swat saw come in. >> by the evening, taylor was still waiting to go back to his truck. some of the workers in the area said nothing of the scale happens here. maybe once you get like a break in or like kind of like further or something like that, but it's not nothing crazy. >> and the sheriff's office says they're just grateful this deputy will be able to go home to his family, live in union city. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> all right, lauren, thank you for that update. this sheriff's deputy is now the second law enforcement officer to be shot in the bay area recently, after oakland officer tuan lei was shot and killed last month. the effect it's having on law enforcement here is also something police agencies say they are seeing more of nationwide. abc seven news reporter tim johns has been talking with local agencies tonight. he's live now at eden medical center with more on that and the latest on this deputy's

condition. tim yeah, ama, the alameda county sheriff's office telling me that a somber tone has taken over their department since all of this went down. >> of course, they're very worried that one of their own could have lost his life this afternoon. they tell me this is part of a growing trend nationwide. the impact of a shooting of an alameda county sheriff's deputy being felt deeply wednesday. >> when we experience you know, critical incidents like this, it resonates throughout the agency from the sheriff down. >> captain tim adams is a spokesperson with the sheriff's office. she says being a law enforcement officer in alameda county has been difficult the past few weeks. at the end of december, oakland police officer tuan lei was shot and killed while attempting to stop a robbery at a cannabis facility in town. now, on wednesday, a deputy from modesto department also shot and injured in the line of duty. we're just looking at this gun violence happening in our county and happening

against law enforcement as well. >> the lawlessness is it's out of control. >> reporter the uptick in violence against law enforcement isn't just happening in the bay area, though. it's a trend also seen around the country. a recent report by the fraternal order of police shows that from 2018 to 2023, the number of officers shot in the line of duty nationwide jumped from 237 to 378, a 60% rise, something that former police chief susan manheimer says is largely due to the increased number of guns in our communities. >> and the proliferation of guns is simply means that as we enter these situations, the level of violence and the level of use of force increases the number of officers shot and killed while on duty nationwide, however, dropped from 62 in 20 22 to 46 last year, something captain modeste says she hopes continues not just for the people she serves with, but also for their loved ones and the community. >> you never know what what a day is going to look like. >> you know what time you start

driver testing their tesla through deep standing water. not a great idea. look at this. the national weather service marked monday as the city's wettest day on record. tesla's website warns that water damage is not covered by its warranty and should not be tried under those circum stances. that is remarkable. what that person got away with there. here at home, this car took on serious damage after plunging into the water by the dumbarton bridge. the chp believes the teen driver was speeding down the long straightaway next to the highway 84 and just lost control. he wasn't hurt, that's the good news. but it is certainly a reminder for all of us to take it slow on these wet roads. it really is. >> all right, let's turn it over to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. after all, thatrillionain, we've had. >> yeah, she's looking ahead now for us at our 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandy >> yeah. and dan and ama, you'll want to take it slow on the roads tomorrow morning because we do have some fog out there. take a look at a live picture from our exploratorium camera.

we do have lingering clouds and even an isolated shower in san jose on live doppler seven. you can see it's a quieter picture than what we had earlier this morning. uh- visibility is dropping quarter mile in santa rosa and indication of thick fog . that's what you're going to start out with. here's a look at your day planner. dense fog in the morning. temperatures in the 40s. mainly sunny by noontime. highs will be in the 50s and 60s for the afternoon, and it is going to be a cooler evening with low to mid 50s. now, while you'll get a chance to put the umbrellas away tomorrow, the question is how long will you be able to leave them aside? i'll be back with the answer coming right up. ama >> all right. thanks, sandhya. we'll check back. demolition has started on a los altos shopping center. gutted by a fire on christmas day. the roof collapsed, so crews are going to be working from the top down this will also help investigators wrap up their work. traffic has been blocked on el camino real ever since the fire, creating some dangerous situations for drivers. >> i almost have ran into people

a couple times. rear ended them because it's not. it's not a u-turn lane. it's just an open section in the road. they're making illegal u-turns there, so it's kind of a traffic uh- problem. >> nearby businesses say they have seen fewer customers because the parking lot is closed. the cause of the fire is still not known and it's unclear when the road will be open. warriors family. >> the tragic loss of our beloved deion milojevic has devastated all of us. coach dickey brought joy and life to every single day. >> the golden state warriors returning to the court with heavy hearts tonight. the initials of a single heart dm deion milojevic sewn onto their jerseys to honor their beloved coach dickey. the players and coaches still clearly visibly affected by this. you can feel the emotion just coursing through chase center the entire night. >> in fact, yeah, you could tell this game was for coach deion. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone is here in studio with

more on tonight's tribute jr ama dan it was certainly an emotional night at chase center this evening. >> players, coaches and fans remembering deion. his wife and kids were even there making it all the more special. his name deion milojevic. many called him dickie. he was a warriors assistant coach that you and i might not have ever heard of, but he was someone who meant the world to a lot of people. it's a fun job. >> i really i really love my job. >> wednesday night, the golden state warriors held a ceremony before their game against the hawks to remember 46 year old dickey, who died after suffering a heart attack. the world lost a beautiful soul last week. players wore jerseys with their number on it and the milojevic last name on the back. others wore black shirts that said brate, which means brother in serbian. deion was from belgrade, serbia, and was in his third season as an assistant coach with the warriors. it's very emotional just to walk into the building for the first time

on a game night without dickey, and obviously we're all wearing our shirts and you know, there's some images of him with his ever present smile and it's very emotional because it's all still very, um, very raw and, um, surreal. milojevic's family was in the crowd during the ceremony as warriors general manager mike dunleavy gave his wife flowers. she cried an empty seat with a flower and a shirt was left for dayon instead of a moment of silence. i'd like for all of us to give dickey an ovation that he can hear up in heaven. >> thank you. your. >> what a night out there at chase center. and on top of it, the warriors won, making it an even more special night. dan ama, now back to you. >> oh, it's a beautiful tribute. all right. thank you j.r. and we

to try to help this poor toddler. police then spring into action. a san leandro police officer just happened to be listening to the oakland police radio. >> so i heard that oakland was investigating a stolen vehicle that may have involved a child being taken with it. so once our officers were made able to make that connection, we notified opd that we had a infant found. >> a short time later, the child was reunited with his mother. she was then able to help the investigation since her phone was still in the car, she was able to track it to a mcdonald's in marin county through the find my phone app, the mother was able to give us continuous updates, at one point showing that the devices appear to be uh- on tiburon boulevard. >> our sheriff's deputies responded and located the vehicle unoccupied in the mcdonald's parking lot. >> the police then searched the area and found two suspects at a bus stop and arrested them. >> developing news, senate majority leader chuck schumer is not pleased with the use of zyn

true merger there as well. commonwealth club world affairs. well we spotted a cool sight in santa cruz earlier today. >> one artist decided to carve out a massive design along the beach's shoreline. take a look at a time lapse of the artist showing off his talents. whoa that looks incredible. this was seen from our santa cruz live camera earlier this afternoon. he uses a rake to scrape ends of the sand to meet directly with the pacific ocean. that appears to be the work of local artists by the name of brighton donovan. here's some of his other work. you can see many of the designs are also along shorelines in the santa cruz area. that is remarkable. it's a shame when high tide comes up and wipes that bummer. >> that's pretty cool. all right, let's talk a little bit about the weather. got a nice break for that today. that's right. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel has more. sandy. yeah. and dan and anna, let's take a look at our outlook, the extended precipitation outlook. >> this is from the climate prediction center february first through seventh. it starts next week on thursday and continues the following week. so the call

is for above average precipitation out west, which includes the bay area 50 to 70% chance here locally even higher for southern california. and you can see the storms keep on lining up in the pacific. but in between the storms, you're going to get a little break tomorrow. so we are expecting dry skies tomorrow afternoon. right now, we still have some isolated showers showing up on live doppler seven. as we take a look back in time this morning as you know, we did get a nice drenching, but it was brief. heavy rain that passed through thunderstorms just off the coast of the monterey bay that eventually crossed the monterey bay. all is quiet now. here's what was left behind last 24 hours. we are talking about at 5000/300 in santa rosa, just overncis, half an inch in oakland, san jose, 4000/800 of an inch. concord, 2800 of an inch. not the storm of the century, but beneficial rain. and now, as we look back at january, we're getting

towards the end of january. now we are in the surplus for san francisco, oakland, san jose and santa rosa all over an inch above what they typically average. in the case of santa rosa, almost two inches. but of course, you know, things can change very quickly. so we have to take the storms when we can. numbers right now in the 40s and the 50s, a live view from emeryville camera. and you can certainly see the fog out there overnight into the morning. areas of dense fog tomorrow, mostly sunny day get a chance to dry off. and this weekend we do have spring like warmth coming your way with temperatures going up into the 70s tomorrow morning . watch out, there will be some areas of fog. we're already seeing the visibility dropping along the coast and in santa rosa at 11 a.m, that fog lingers out towards the delta, but most of the rest of you looking at sun and then eventually that fog burns off there as well. for the afternoon. there's sunshine for the evening, clouds on the increase. once again, your morning temperatures will be in the 40s and the 50s to start the day tomorrow afternoon. you are
