>> abc's jay o'brien has the latest on this race from washington. jay good morning. >> lionel. good morning. as nikki haley vows to stay in the race through her home state of south carolina's primary next month, she's issuing a challenge this morning to former president trump and the next president of the united states, nikki haley. this morning, nikki haley defied it on her home turf in south carolina as she faces increasing pressure to drop out of the race . >> bring it donald, show me what you got. >> at a rally last night, haley saying her campaign has raised $1 million since tuesday night when she lost to donald trump in new hampshire. >> we have had 200,000 donors from all 50 states, 95% of those donations are $200 or less. this is about real americans. >> but haley losing at least one big donor for now. read hoffman, the billionaire co-founder of linkedin, saying he's holding off making any new investments

rushing water yesterday. dozens of others had to be pulled from flooded vehicles. we'll get a check of your forecast in just a few moments. >> we turn now to boeing, under scrutiny for its quality and safety. but this morning there's a plan to get a troubled plane back in the sky. three weeks after a door blew off this alaska airlines flight in. mid-air, grounding all boeing 737 max nines and canceling hundreds of flights per day, there's a new plan to return those planes to the sky. the faa is now detailing a 12 hour inspection process for the jets to get them back into service. alaska airlines, with 65 max nines in its fleet, says it plans to fly them again as soon as tomorrow. united airlines expects to fly them this weekend, but it's not blue skies just yet. for boeing, the faa says it will not allow an expansion in production or approve additional production lines for the 737 max until quality control issues uncovered during this process are resolved. boeing ceo facing tough questions on capitol hill

wi-fi safe planes. >> we don't put airplanes in the air that we don't have 100% confidence in. i'm here today in the spirit of transparency, but a new report from the seattle times claims the door plug that failed on that flight, this month had been removed for repair, then reinstalled improperly by boeing mechanics. >> boeing ceo ducking that question what is your comment today on the news that it was boeing not referring reporters to investigators ntsb. >> thank you. >> boeing ceo is expected to return to capitol hill and will face a public hearing. >> the supreme court has now cleared the way for an alabama man to be executed today by nitrogen gas. the first execution using this untested method. the state tried a lethal injection on convicted killer kenneth smith, but could not get the needle in his veins. other states also plan to use nitrogen gas because of a shortage of lethal injection drugs. the un claims the gas could be considered torture. >> we turn now to the backlash

against so-called dei programs diversity, equity and inclusion programs in schools and other organizations. another state is looking to cut funding from them, but not without protest. here's abc's derrick dennis money for schools and education, not for racist legislation. >> students at florida state university speaking out after the state's board of governors, which oversees the public university system, approved banning the use of public funds for diversity, equity and inclusion programs, or dei. >> so we're here to protest that, show that that's not popular, like students don't want this. >> the board defining dei as any program, campus activity or policy that classifies individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, gender identity, or sexual orientation. florida is at least the fifth state to take such action, while nearly two dozen other states consider the issue, governor ron desantis has long criticized dei programs. >> i think the way it's actually

practiced, it stands for discrimination, exclusion and indoctrination. and it's wrong. >> opponents say this new law will have an immediate impact. >> it intimidates, threatens, and in some cases eliminates multicolor student centers, jewish student unions, black student unions, hispanic student unions, and of course, lgbt student unions. >> this regulation is silencing people from being themselves, silencing our freedoms. the backlash against dei programs comes after the supreme court last year struck down race based admissions bans in colleges and universities, as lionel andrea. >> all right derek. thank you. turning now to the middle east, israel has denied responsibility for a deadly explosion at a united nations facility in gaza. the un says 800 refugees were inside the shelter when the building was hit by a tank fire, killing at least nine people. the white house says there are serious discussions underway aimed at reaching a cease fire. >> a new report on religion in america reveals a new first when it comes to a religious affiliation. 28% of americans

new action, but they could run into legal challenges as lawmakers in florida have approved what could become the most strict crackdown on social media in the country. a bill passed by the house would ban any one under age 16 from signing up for most social media platforms, regardless of whether they have their parents approval . >> it's like a digital fentanyl, and even the most plugged in parent or attuned teen has a hard time shutting the door. >> the bill, which passed with bipartisan support, does not specify which platforms would be affected, but it targets any company that tracks user activity, allows children to upload content, or uses design features like endless scrolling, which critics say encourages compulsive use. >> they're just taking advantage of kids growing up. >> opponents say the bill infringes on parental rights and will face first amendment challenges in court. the aclu saying the internet, including social media platforms, contains

vast amounts of constitutionally protected speech for both adults and minors. meanwhile, in new york city, we are the first major city in america to take this step. the mayor has now designated social media as an environmental toxin and public health hazard. the city's health department issuing an advisory that cites declining mental health among young people. but social media companies like meta, which owns instagram and facebook, have long touted their improved security features and parental controls to protect children. and supporters say social media has real benefits, allowing teens to connect and find people with like interests. the new york advisory urges parents to delay giving kids access to a smartphone until 14. meanwhile, in florida, the bill passed by the house still needs approval from the state senate and the governor. >> more states are banning plastic bags, but a new study claims it might be having the opposite effect. researchers
