before we see a really nice afternoon set up here. here's live doppler seven. we're in much better shape this morning. we're not dealing like any heavy rain that we had yesterday morning, but we still have moisture in our atmosphere and that is condensing into some dense fog right now. the north bay getting hit hardest by the visibility low less than a quarter of a mile. basically up and down 101. we have a little bit of fog on the coast and inland. watch those numbers around half moon bay and livermore this morning. it's also a cooler morning compared to yesterday. a lot of us are starting our day in the 40s. you'll notice that chill first thing, but we're in store for a nice afternoon. here's the morning commute. we're dry, but we have to deal with that fog through about 8 a.m. but that sunshine is really going to break out later on this morning and into the afternoon. we are looking at bright conditions, so today we have that fog giving way to sunshine shine temperatures in the upper 50s to the lower 60s, but we do have to talk about a little bit of rain over the weekend. we'll preview that in eight minutes. let's say hi to gloria and see how traffic is doing. >> good morning drew. good morning everyone. well, as drew

mentioned, we may see some fog this morning on the roads that could impact your visibility. so far though, it's not looking too bad out there. as far as the fog, this is a live look outside at our 680 camera in walnut creek and no issues for those who are heading to highway 24. and then a look at your drive times for this morning. right now, just that usual slow spot. tracy to dublin that will take you 35 minutes. >> gloria. thank you. developing news in the east bay, an alameda county sheriff's deputy is in the hospital after being shot while serving an eviction notice in union city. the search for the suspect stretched into the night, and it's still unclear if anyone is under arrest. the shooting happened in an industrial area on dow avenue right off alvarado-niles road. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in union city with what police are now saying about the investigation. lena. >> reggie, good morning to you. luckily the deputy that was hurt in this is expected to be okay and only about an hour and a half ago. union city police said that the police activity out

here in this area, off of off of dove avenue, has since been resolved. and they say there is no longer a threat to the community at this time, though police have not confirmed any arrests. this started yesterday afternoon as an alameda county sheriff's deputy was serving an eviction notice. the suspect was considered to be armed and dangerous, sparking an hours long search that went late into the night. multiple agencies were on scene, combing through the streets to find the person. the area here off of dow avenue is a commercial, is commercial and expansive. we heard from a delivery truck driver who was sitting in his truck when he heard the shots. he stepped out and saw the injured officer. >> the ems came and picked him up across the street, be between the two buildings of these until calm and then swat's all come in . just before midnight, the alameda county sheriff's office said the deputy that was shot already went through surgery for a non-life threatening injury to

his arm. >> and they say he is in recovery and in good spirits right now at the castro valley eden medical center. we are also expecting to get an update from police officials here on scene right around 8:00 this morning. for now, live in castro valley. lena howland abc seven news. >> thank you lena. now this sheriff's deputy is the second law enforcement officer to be shot in the bay area recently. of course, you'll remember oakland officer twan lee, who was shot and killed last month. the effect it's having on law enforcement here is also something police agencies say they're seeing nationwide. a recent report by the fraternal order of police shows that from 2018 to 2023, the number of officers shot in the line of duty nationwide jumped 60% from 237 to 378. it's something former san mateo police chief susan manheimer says is largely due to the increased numbers of guns and the proliferation of guns is simply means that as we

election matchup, receiving a key endorsement from the united auto workers union yesterday and focusing his attacks on trump. >> while i stood in solid to you on the picket line. president said, i want to pick a line. donald trump went to a nonunion shop and attacked you during his remarks at that uaw event, president biden was interrupted by protesters calling for a ceasefire in gaza. >> this, after several interruptions at a campaign event earlier this week by similar protests, all of it prompting serious questions of if the israel-hamas war is causing a rift between president biden and progressive voters. jay o'brien, abc news, washington. >> in developing news out of southern california, where six people were found dead in the mojave desert. >> the bodies were discovered near el mirage, which is in a remote part of san bernardino county. now, one look at the scene. it was clear to detectives that whatever

happened there was deliberate. gloria at the live desk with a look at the investigation. gloria >> good morning. kumasi. sheriff's deputies found five bodies and two abandoned cars on tuesday night. at least one of those vehicles had bullet holes. a sixth person was found yesterday morning. three of the bodies were burned as if someone tried to set them on fire to conceal the crime. the call came in to san bernardino county sheriff's dispatch, not to report a crime, but the caller asked for a welfare check off the highway in the middle of the desert. >> it's going to be heartbreaking no matter what the situation is, what they discover out there as far as the circumstances surrounding it. um, so our investigators will continue to do their best to wrap this up quickly and, um, get all the information possible to, to bring justice to those folks out there. >> detectives have not identified the bodies of the victims, and despite one of the cars having bullet holes, officials are not saying how

those six people might have died. kumasi. >> thank you, gloria. this morning we are learning about another issue with the commercial plane. this time it was an airbus plane with missing parts noticed by a passenger. it happened on a virgin atlantic flight. is about to take off from england to new york city on january 15th. phil hardy noticed something missing on one of the wings and alerted flight attendants. >> one of these people that notice things and someone just didn't look odd because you could see the white screws in the line and then just fall black holes. so i took a picture, zoomed in closer, and you could actually see that there were holes. >> okay. hardy says flight attendants assured him there was not a safety issue, but they did end up canceling the flight, so the engineers could look at the plane. >> airbus told usa today the missing fasteners had no impact on the plane's safe operation. unite airlines says it's been given final approval to return its fleet of 737 max, nine

planes to service. unite inspected 26 of its 79 max nines under federal aviation administration supervision after the incident, where a door plug blew off an alaska airlines max nine plane mid-flight earlier this month. officials say airline officials say for the remaining inspections, they will look at access to each door plug, verify the proper installation of the door and frame hardware, and make any necessary repairs. it's coming. as legislators on capitol hill grilled the head of boeing yesterday over safety issues. >> you do not want to be legislating on aviation safety after some big design booster or crash. >> united says it could start to return max nine aircraft to service on sunday. alaska is also working with alaska airlines with the faa and told cnn that their max nines could start to return to service as soon as tomorrow. >> 5-10, we'll take you to san

jose, where we have mostly cloudy conditions right now, but we're dry. we're going to get a pretty nice afternoon on the way today with sunnier skies. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. it's a lot quieter this morning compared to this time yesterday. we were dealing with heavy rain yesterday for the morning commute. no issues outside of some patchy fog right now in the north bay. let's break it down. region by region along the coast we have a little bit of cloud cover, but you can see later on this morning and into the afternoon we will get brighter skies developing. we'll get those numbers into the mid and upper 50s along the coast around the bay shoreline. first thing this morning in the north bay, we are dealing with areas of dense fog, but into the afternoon it's looking very nice. mostly sunny skies and temperatures near 60 degrees. and as we head inland, we'll see that sunshine a little bit faster. today and it will be a nice afternoon. you can leave the umbrella at home inland. we'll get those numbers into the low 60s under mostly sunny skies . but looking at the three day forecast, we do have changes coming our way tomorrow and into saturday. so enjoy the sunshine today. after that morning, fog

with bally's to include plans for a resort around the stadium. fisher says the a's met tuesday with the contractor designer and an architect to go over the plans, and he's looking for help paying for the $1.5 billion stadium that will be funded mostly with equity from my family. >> we would actually like to you know, consider raising capital, especially from local investors, because we think that that creates a, a, a connection to the community. >> fisher maintains the stadium will be ready for the 2028 season. san francisco city leaders say the apex summit cost the city $25 million, and now they're debating over how to cover the tab. >> supervisors are considering taking millions out of the general fund to cover some of the costs. abc seven news insider phil matier broke down the city's predicament of paying up. >> now the tab is coming due for all that police presence we see, or at least part of it. i have

to tell you, it's a $6.5 million for police overtime time. and as you point out, that money is initially coming out of the general fund. now the hope and the plan is that it's going to be replenished by that 20 part of that $20 million that the mayor collected from business leaders and such in order to host the event. >> the city is also considering covering some of the costs with surplus money from san francisco , apec reserves. that plan is facing some pushback from businesses who say they lost money during the summit, and they want to be reimbursed from that reserve fund. >> a nonprofit organization that helps people who are experiencing homelessness and poverty in the north bay is breaking ground on a new facility today. so here's a preview of what it will look like when it opens at the end of the year. ritter center in san rafael has been operating out of a victorian home for more than 40 years. it is moving to this new spot just a few blocks away, that will have a lot more. that includes medical exam rooms, food pantry, storage, parking

and workspace for staff and volunteers. >> today is a big day in san mateo and alameda counties. volunteers are conducting the point in time count for the unhoused population. yesterday, 200 volunteers just conducted the count in contra costa county. according to data from the department of housing and urban development, or hud. over the past 15 years, contra costa county has seen an overall decline in the number of people who are homeless. there were more than 4000 in 2008. more than 3000 in 2022. that number dropped to 2300in 2023. however, the county's director of health, housing and homeless services says this one day figure is often an undercount. count of the total number they serve during the year. >> last year, we touched over 10,000 people. um, and so that's a far cry larger than the about 3000 that you count on. you know, one day a year was the final count is due to hud in april.

>> there's a new option to get to canada, canadian airline porter airlines is kicking off daily flights from sfo to toronto today. porter airlines will have a ticket counter in aisle 12 of the international terminal. now, some of the airline's perks free beer, wine, snacks and wi-fi included with all ticket types. it's also a two by two layout, so no middle seats. also today, a new statue honoring a silicon valley legend will be unveiled at mineta, san jose international airport. this is a six foot tall bronze sculpture of norman mineta, the man the airport is named after. mineta became the first asian american mayor of a major u.s. city when he served as san jose's mayor in the 70s. he later went on to become america's longest serving transportation secretary. he died in 2022 at the age of 90, an unveiling ceremony is set for ten this morning in terminal b's baggage claim area >> tickets for the first weekend of coachella are still available. six days after they went on sale, and this is the

first time in a decade that tickets are still up for grabs and not sold out, according to sfgate. one possible reason for the slowdown is the lineup this year. it features headliners doja cat, tyler, the creator, lana del rey and no doubt. ticket sales were also slow last year. weekend one took several days to sell out, so now we're on day six and we're trying to say the festival has died and that is not right. >> yeah, but some of y'all, i think, might have thought i was being shady when i said, where are the headliners? >> and that was where's the lie? the sales, they're not there. >> many agree with you. they did use to sell out right away. so that is shocking that they're not sold out yet, but maybe they'll still get there. >> and a lot of people are saying, i did a deep dive into this last night because i was up late for no reason. uh- they're saying now that it's just there's so many festivals, like when this started 20 years ago, this was one of the biggest out

roll back in. so tomorrow is a lot cloudier. enjoy the sunshine today we'll get you into the upper 50s and lower 60s for daytime highs. now tonight we turn to mainly overcast skies. temperatures on either side of about 50 degrees. what we're watching on live doppler seven, along with satellite. here's a storm system out in the pacific. most of this energy is going to stay well north of us, but the north bay is going to get scraped by the outer fringes of this storm starting tomorrow. so future weather showing you early tomorrow morning. there may be a light sprinkle. santa rosa points to the north, and then saturday morning there's a better chance of finding some moisture. but behind this storm system, things are going to warm up in a big way. on sunday. look at these temperatures upper 60s to the mid 70s with bright skies. if you're headed to the south bay on sunday, the niners a kickoff temperature 72 degrees. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so fog to sun today. clouds return tomorrow. there's that morning chance of a shower in the north bay. and then we have a nice

last name on the back. others wore black shirts that said brate, which means brother in serbian. deion was from belgrade, serbia, and was in his third season as an assistant coach with the warriors. >> it's very emotional just to walk into the building for the first time on a game night without dickey, and obviously we're all wearing our shirts and you know, there's some images of him with his ever present smile and it's very emotional because it's all still very, um, very raw and, and, um, surreal. milojevic his family was in the crowd during the ceremony as warriors general manager mike dunleavy gave his wife flowers. >> she cried an empty seat with a flower and a shirt was left for deion. instead of a moment of silence, i'd like for all of us to give dickey an ovation that he can hear up in heaven. >> thank you god. jr

police are still on scene at this hour. now, around 3.30 this morning, union city police told us that the situation had been resolved and that there was no longer a threat to the public. but it's still not clear if any arrests have been made. this comes after an alameda county sheriff's deputy was shot at a business park while serving an eviction notice. multiple agencies were on scene after that, combing through the area. this sparked an hours long search for the suspect, considered to be armed and dangerous. the area here off of dow avenue is commercial and expansive, some of the workers in the area said nothing of this scale happens here. maybe once you get like a break in or like kind of like further or something like that, but it's not nothing crazy. luckily, that deputy involved in this shooting is expected to be okay just before midnight, the alameda county sheriff's office said the deputy that was shot already went through surgery for a

non-life threatening injury to his arm, and they say he is in recovery and in good spirits in the hospital right now. union city police said they are expecting to give their next update right around 8:00 this morning. live in union city. lena howland abc seven news. >> thank you lena, a dramatic scene caught on camera in san francisco where a maserati collided with a muni bus. this happened near third and bryant streets yesterday afternoon. you can see the car got pretty messed up. there was reportedly a second crash that happened not far away at third and stillman. we haven't heard whether anyone was hurt or what caused this collision. we have reached out to both san francisco police and the sfmta to get more info. we are still waiting for a response . now to a story we first told you about yesterday morning. abc seven news has obtained surveillance video. it shows the moment a car thief left a kidnaped two year old child in san leandro. you see the car suddenly stopping near a warehouse complex. the suspect gets out carrying the two year

old, drops him off, and then gets back in the car and just drives away. less than a minute later, a bus driver stopped and called for help. as people started coming out of their businesses to help this toddler. police then sprang into action. a san leandro police officer just happened to be listening to the oakland police radio. >> actually heard that oakland was investigating a stolen vehicle that may have involved a child being taken with it. so once our officers were made able to make that connection, we notified opd that we had a infant found a short time later, the child was reunited with his mother. >> she was then able to help the investigation since her phone was still in the car, so she was able to track that phone to a mcdonald's in marin county through the find my phone app. >> the mother was able to give us continuous updates, at one point showing that the devices appear to be uh- on tiburon boulevard. our sheriff's deputies responded and located

the vehicle unoccupied in the mcdonald's parking lot. police then searched the area. >> they found two suspects. they were at a bus stop and that's when they made the arrest. >> that demolition has started on a los altos shopping center gutted by fire on christmas day. the roof collapsed, so crews are going to be working from the top down. the process will also help investigators wrap up their work . traffic has been blocked on el camino real ever since that fire, and it's created some dangerous situations for drivers. >> i almost have ran into people a couple times. rear ended them because it's not it's not a u-turn lane. it's just a an open section in the road. and they're making illegal u-turns there. so it's kind of a traffic problem nearby businesses say they have seen fewer customers because the parking lot is closed. >> the cause of the fire is still not known. it's not clear when the road will reopen. a long planned housing development in the ultra wealthy community

of belvedere is finally moving forward, despite public outcry. it's a story we first reported two years ago. according to the chronicle this week, the city council rejected an effort to delay the 40 unit project at mallard point. the development would be the first low income housing built in belvedere in 30 years. the report says construction could begin next year. a second walgreens will be closing its doors in san francisco's downtown district. the store, on 275 sacramento shuts down on february 27th. our media partners at the standard spoke with the store representative, who says it's due to low foot traffic. customers will now have to go to the montgomery street location four blocks away. this will be the fourth walgreens to close in downtown san francisco since last fall. >> florida's board of governors has approved banning the use of public funds for diversity, equity and inclusion, otherwise known as dei. the board defines dei as any program, campus activity, or policy that

it's just a really nice day today. 58 in the city, 60 in oakland, 62 in san jose, 59. the high in napa. overnight tonight, though, the clouds are going to roll back in skies turn overcast. and first thing tomorrow morning around ukiah, lakeport, there could be a light sprinkle. but for most of us, we're just dealing with cloudy skies and temperatures on either side of about 50 degrees. here's the reason why. for those light shower chances tomorrow and saturday in parts of the north bay, live doppler seven along with satellite. this is our next storm system that will impact the west coast. most of this energy going well to the north of us, but the north bay may get scraped by 1 or 2 of these showers. in fact, future weather showing you early tomorrow morning, there's that chance clear lake ukiah, even santa rosa yountville. not out of the question. you may have some mist early tomorrow morning, but saturday morning is a better chance for areas in the north bay to see a light shower you notice outside of the north bay we are dry, but saturday is a pretty cloudy day behind this system though. sunday it is gorgeous. the sunshine is back out, temperatures surge thanks

season. certainly there are weather seasons and it's creating lasting problems for people across california, reporter alex cheney from our sister station la spoke to some homeowners having issues in rancho palos verdes. the hills of rancho palos verdes are now starting to slide even faster than before. >> sherry hastings lives in the bluffs above abalone canyon, and within the last few weeks, cracks have started to form all over her property. >> i saw a small crack, and over the week it expanded to about two inches. and that was early january. and now it's what it is here in late january, the land movement broke. >> her water main cracked concrete walls and created a fissure in the ground underneath one of her horse stables. geologists think heavy rain since last winter have saturated the ground and accelerated the slide. >> the rate of movement ranged from hundredths of an inch per year to now it's over two feet in places in the neighborhood and 15 to 20ft down at the seashore, gordon says. >> there is a way to slow the
